President’s Message
by Melyni Worth
Hi Everyone,
As I write this letter, sitting in my
camper in the 60 degree weather in
Florida, I see all the Facebook posts
about the blizzard and snow! I hope
everyone is well and staying warm and
as comfortable as possible. Better
weather is on its way! Hang on in
there folks!
One piece of sad news that has just
broken is the loss of Leslie Sebers of
ShenVADA, Leslie operated Light Horse
Stables in Edinburg VA and was
instrumental in starting a lot of local
riders in their path to dressage. She
was a founding member of ShenVADA
and contributed so much to the club,
she will be sorely missed!
Things are always quiet during the
winter months, if you have time to
stop and think please reflect on what
you would like the club to be doing
and what kind of activities you would
like us to have next year, then send out
an email to one (or all) of the Board
members, better still come to our next
meeting in March and tell us about
your idea and let’s see if we can’t
make it happen.
Wishing you all well, stay safe and
warm.

VADA-CH Board & Membership Meeting
Monday @ 7PM Shadwells, Route 250 Bypass
May Board Meeting
Left: Nancy Lowey, Melyni Worth,
Tina Longaker. Right: Jan
Templeton, Lee Scott, Sherri Booye.
Taking picture: Laura Berne
Newsletter: Tina talked to VADA State
President Alison Head concerning the
submission of our well-produced, monthly
VADA-CH newsletter- editor Laura Berne- to
the USDF ( United States Dressage
Federation) GMO (Group member
Organization) ‘ Best GMO Newsletter’
category. We will await word concerning its
submission
.
Dressage at Lexington: VADA State is in the
process of purchasing the ‘Dressage at
Lexington’ Dressage Show-. If the deal is
solidified we would take over the operation
of that show in July 2017.
Clinic Survey: The survey that was produced
and sent out by Laura Berne appears to be
successful with about a 33% return. For the
most part it indicated that the members that
sent in responses are not interested in riding
in clinics. It was suggested by Melyni Worth
that the reason may be because of the
number of qualified trainers in the area. Our
membership may be taking advantage of
that.
Musical Freestyle Clinic: Since we are an
educational organization- as stated in our
mission statement- we should look at
different educational opportunities. Carla
Scarmazzi suggested a Musical Freestyle
Clinic. Melyni indicated that whatever we do,
we should expand our advertising for such
events to include the North Carolina area and
the CDCTA (Commonwealth Dressage and
Combine Training Association).It was
mentioned that if we did a Musical Freestyle
Clinic – the Chapter Grant Clinic stipend provided by VADA State - should be used
with a possible date of April.
DC & DTO: Two online educational entities –
Dressage Training Online and Dressage Clinic
are possibly looking to partner with us. Laura
introduced detailed information/comparison
on each group. No decision was made to go
with either group at this time.
Rules & Forms: Discussion centered on
possible changes in our Scholarship rules. It
was decided not to change the
guidelines/rules for 2016.The drawing will
still be in September 2016.Volunteer
requirements will remain the same for
eligibility. High Score Awards- requirements
will remain the same for licensed and
schooling shows. There will be a clarification

on the Volunteer Form and Scholarship
Form. Apparently some members found it
difficult to locate and use the Scholarship
application and High Score Award. There is a
change in the name for the VADA-CH
Registered Arabian/Half Arabian/Anglo
Arabian 2016 Year End Award. The name will
now reflect the name of Sherri Booye’s
beloved Arabian/Half Arabian horse MC
Endless Echo.
The name will now be- ’The Registered
Arabian/Half Arabian/Anglo Arabian Year
End Award and MC Endless Echo Perpetual
Memorial Overall High Score Trophy’.
(blessing the memory of such a beloved
horse!)
PayPal: Laura presented information on
using Paypal for online entry for our licensed
dressage show in August 13 and 14 at
Commonwealth Park, Culpeper. We may be
able to use this for membership dues as well.
There will be further information presented
by Laura in the future.
th
Future Dates: January 9 is our Awards
luncheon- at Lee Scot’s Charlottesville home.
More information will follow. Spring
Schooling show at Melyni Worth’s Cedar
Creek Stables– tentatively set for April 23.
Tina Longaker will judge.
Next Meetings: There will be no meeting in
January. A Conference call is scheduled for
February 8- 7:00pm. Tina will provide the
th
phone number at a later time. March 14 is
next physical meeting of VADA-CH at
Shadwell’s Restaurant. Meyni will be in sunny
FL – Vice President Carla Scarmazzi will
conduct. Meeting adjourned at 8:30.

Thank you Lee for hosting the awards luncheon at your home and
providing the super delicious easy peasy soup! (recipe below)
Easy Peasy Soup
1 16 oz. bag red lentils (brown are fine, if you can’t find red, but red are prettier and cook faster)
1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes
1 16 oz. jar chunky salsa (medium)
1 32 oz. box of vegetable or chicken broth
1 12-oz. bag chopped frozen spinach
Dump all ingredients in a large pot and stir together. Add water as needed; rinsing the tomato can and salsa
jar is almost enough. Cook on high until it bubbles, then simmer until lentils are soft.
Can be served as is or with some grated cheese or a dollop of sour cream.

VADA Jan 27, 2016 (8PM Conference Call)
Board Meeting Minutes
Submitted by Alison Douglas
The meeting was called to order at
8:00 pm and was held via conference
call.
Attendance: Present were Alison
Head (NOVA), Jessie Ginsburg
(NOVA), Alison Douglas (Central),
Angela Stanaway (NE), Sherri Booye
(C’ville), Robyn Nunnally (SVDA),
Beth Rippel (SVDA), Susan Ellis
(NEVADA), Sheli King (NOVA),
Dianne Boyd (NOVA), Kathy Rowse
(SVDA), Debbie Howard (Central),
Anne Draine (NE), Tracey SmithOliver (SWVADA), Amanda Harper
(Central), Judith Harroun-Lord
(ShenVADA), Sandy Johnson
(SVDA), Jane Palmer (ShenVADA),
Nancy Lowey (C’ville) Alison
Thompson (Fredericksburg),
Meredith McGrath (SWAVDA), Barb
Pickering (NOVA), Dianne Carpenter
(NOVA)
Motion: Sheli King made a motion
that we approve the minutes from
the December board meeting. The
motion was seconded by Anne
Draine and was passed unanimously.
Treasurer: Combined balances are
123K per Jessie - but this includes
some expenses for the banquet and
the down payment on DAL.
Membership: Barb Pickering
reported that chapters can now send
membership reports and checks
directly to USDF. Directions on that
will come from Alison Head.
Membership chairs are able to check
directly with USDF to ensure
members have been added properly
for 2016. VADA membership lists
and checks would always go to Beth
Rippel. USDF has requested that if
chapters send directly to them that
all chapters use the same format- an
excel template will be included in the
email from Alison Head. Any
questions from membership chairs
from the chapters should be directed
to Alison Head who will disseminate
information accordingly.
Report from 2017 Licensed Show
Committee: Committee
recommends that VADA seeks to
host two shows in 2017- the DAL and
a fall show. These would have
separate management teams,
awards and volunteer coordinators,
though there could be overlap.
Because the GAIGs are more
challenging to host and have more
rules, the Committee recommends
that we bid on the BLM show and
not GAIG in 2017. This would not
mean giving up GAIG, but stepping
out of rotation for 2017. Decision to
make this change will be voted on at
the February board meeting.
Awards Banquet/Silent Auction:
Everything is on point. An e-blast
will go out reminding members of
the banquet. Chapters should make
further efforts to get silent auction
items.
VADA Spring Clinic: We have
received USDF approval for the
freestyle clinic to count as the
freestyle session of the L program
and licensed officials programs.
Clinicians for the weekend will be
Kathy Rowse and Marlene Whitaker.
The 23rd of April will be the standard
USDF classroom freestyle session
and will be held at the Best Western
in Leesburg. April 24th will feature
live freestyles and will be held at
Morven Park in Leesburg. We are
applying for the Dressage
Foundation grant and also the
regional grant for judge training
from USDF. Decisions to come on
fees.
Next Meeting: The next meeting will
be held at the awards banquet on
February 7th at 10:45 am.
Meeting Adjourned: The meeting
was adjourned at 9:10 pm.
