Summer 2011
Donor
Appreciation
I s s u e 2 010 - 11
From the President
To all our SBA families and friends –
Greetings from SBA! I hope all is well with you and your loved ones – and the
ones who drive you crazy.
As happens on occasion, part of my summer was devoted to hiring a few new
teachers for our staff. We’re blessed to have so many devoted faculty; but change is
inevitable for some. Before I ever begin reviewing resumes, my wife Nancy always
reminds me not to make the same mistake I made one summer many years ago.
I had interviewed quite a few applicants for a particular position, but could never
get perfectly satisfied. None seemed just right for our students. And then that
perfect guy walked in - at least he was to me. But it was a group interview and I like
to gather all input so I walked him to the door, thanked him for his time, and said
what I always say “We’ll be in touch.” Then I went back to my office to hear what
each had to offer.
We agreed he was the teacher we needed, so it was decided I’d call him in a little while and make the offer.
And we moved on to the craziness of the day. As a result, I didn’t get to it until after lunch. When he didn’t
answer, I left a message. And you can sense where this is going.
He hadn’t answered because he had been in another interview at that exact moment and while sitting there,
that principal had seen what we had seen. Only they hired him on the spot. I was exactly 15 minutes late. I had
missed my window of opportunity.
In a roundabout way, we’re preaching the same message to our students that Nancy preaches to me. “Just
don’t miss it.”
Because SBA is all about providing our students as many windows of opportunity as we can. And then
hoping, encouraging, pushing, pulling - and praying - they won’t let one pass them by.
True, some windows really are just for looking. But even that can be enlightening and a little bit of fun. Not
all kids are athletes and certainly not all of them can sing or dance - as I proved during my own student years.
And of course, there are the obvious opportunities to prepare for the academics of college as well as the daily
chance to grow so much closer to their Maker.
A few kids have done what I did, letting one window or another close before … well, before they knew it. But
most leave here having seen and done so much.
And there’s my reason for writing … they have all of you to thank. Included in this issue is our Annual Report
in which we list the donors to our Annual Fund as well as our many various programs. We cannot thank you
enough for helping us open window after window for these students. Some require resources we would not
have gotten any other way. You have made us so much better.
Nor can we send out a thank you without mentioning all of our supporters who have added us – our kids
and our staff – to your prayer lists. We may not know your names but we thank you just as much.
May God bless you in the same way He has blessed others through you!
George Valadie
President
From the Editor
My message this issue is short and sweet –
PLEASE READ THIS ISSUE!
The point being, there is so much in this issue of On Eagles’ Wings that I really don’t
have any more to add. So take advantage of the wonderful news herein and enjoy. It’s
been a great year! Enough said!

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
The Honor Roll of Donors/
Annual Report acknowledges
the many donors and volunteers
who have contributed and
helped St. Benedict at
Auburndale High School. Their
generosity helps to sustain the
school’s mission of academic
excellence in a challenging
and Christian environment
permeated with the aims, values
and teachings of the Roman
Catholic faith, providing students
with the tools to master this
challenge, to continue their
education and to make the
world a better a place. The
Annual Fund Drive is one of
the most important avenues of
giving at SBA. These annual gifts
received from so many alumni,
parents, grandparents, friends,
faculty and staff and corporations
are the lifeblood of the school
and vital to meeting current
needs while enhancing student
programs. Matching Gifts from
donors’ places of employment
can also increase the overall

Remember, the Community
Sponsorship Program (Eagle
Bucks) is an easy way to contribute
to the school while doing your
shopping for holidays, birthdays,
graduations, etc. A variety of gift
cards may be ordered through the
business office and SBA receives
a percentage of the purchase.
Then a percentage of that rebate
is attributed to you for use toward
tuition or an SBA organization of your
choice.

Board Of Advisors Closes Another Year
By Mike Waddell, President 2010-11
The SBA Board of Advisors recently completed its activities for
the 2010/2011 year. Since my last update, the Board’s agenda has
continued to center around a series of presentations on significant
strategic and operating areas of the school. Recent areas of focus have
included Spiritual Affairs, Athletic Affairs, Financial Affairs and Discipline.
The respective staff members responsible for these areas delivered
excellent and enlightening presentations to the Board.
The Board has elected new officers as follows: Don Williams Chairman, Mindy Costabile - Vice Chairwoman and Phil Sisneros Secretary. I know that each of these individuals will provide outstanding
leadership in guiding the Board’s activities over the coming year.
It has been my honor to be part of the Board for the past several
years. One of the most memorable aspects has been the opportunity to
work with and get to know the St. Benedict staff. We are very fortunate to
have such a dedicated team of professionals who make our school the
outstanding, well-rounded educational institution that it is.
SBA Alum joins Development Team
We are pleased to announce that SBA ’91 graduate, Lori Trew
Regis, will be serving as our new Alumni & Development Director
focusing on Alumni Affairs and the Annual Drive campaign. She
comes to us from Tipton-Rosemark Academy where she has been a
faculty member since 2003 and their Advancement Director for the
last six years. Lori lives in Atoka, TN and is married to Eric Regis. They
have two children, Maddye, 15 and Steven, 13. She is very excited
to reconnect with Auburndale and SBA classmates. Please feel free
to contact her at [email protected].

About Our Faith
Freshman Receives Bobby Russell Award
St. Benedict rising sophomore Morgan Patrick
was recently selected to receive the Annual Bobby
Russell Memorial Scholarship. The award was
established by Mr. Russell’s family and friends
following his untimely death and is given annually
to an SBA student based on an essay. Mr. Russell
was struck and killed by an automobile driven by an
occupant under the influence. The accident occurred
while Mr. Russell was working in the front yard of
his home in 1995. His two sons, Trey (2000), Wes
(’98) are graduates of SBA and his widow, Dell, is a
long-time spokesperson for MADD (Mothers against
Drunk Driving). A fund was established to afford a
worthy SBA student tuition assistance based on the
essay submitted and titled, “What a Catholic School
Education Means to Me Now and in the Future.”
Morgan wrote her essay as a freshman, and was
the one, of many, anonymously selected by the
scholarship fund committee. Morgan’s essay follows -
Bobby Russell Scholarship Application
Morgan Patrick, 9th grade
with his funny faces, simple nicknames like Mo
for Morgan and Uh for Andrea, and his comforting
one-armed hugs. Everyone he meets remembers
him for life, and no one could never be excited to
see him. This boy is one that may not have lived
without the efforts of the Pro-Life movement. My
personal way of supporting this movement and
kids like Huntley is through school. My Catholic
education provides me with clubs such as Teens for
Life and gives me scriptural basis to make my ProLife argument. Catholics schools additionally give
me a foundation and place to practice promoting
the sanctity of life and importance of simple things.
In this Catholic environment, I have the freedom
to voice my opinions and talk out any issues with
leaders who have my same beliefs. Before I came to
SBA, I was at a public school, where kids made fun
of special needs children and we were not allowed
to talk about God, but in a new Catholic school, I
feel comfortable about talking about my beliefs and
praying about the future. In the near future, I hope
I can use my promotion skills I learn in this Catholic
education to be a proud and active supporter of ProLife ministries.
Dipping sauce is all it takes to make him happy.
Not brand, nor color, nor taste matters to him. He
does not even care what he is dipping. It is a very
simple thing, yet one that will brighten his face any
time, any day; every time, every day. Simple things
for a wonderful, extraordinary, simply perfect mind.
My close first cousin was born with a diseased
brain. Many people think that this little boy is not
worth saving and that he could never contribute
to society, but my opinion differs tremendously. A
Catholic education is important to me because I
have the opportunity to openly support the Pro-Life
movement. The Pro- Life movement is important
to me because many Pro-Choice supporters think
that special children, like Huntley, should not be
allowed life because of their disabilities. Huntley, a
rare case, has half of a brain because of a disease in
the other half. The doctors had to surgically remove
half of his dysfunctional brain so that he could live. I
give my most grateful thanks to these surgeons for
giving me this person so that he may remind me of
God’s miracles. Huntley will liven anyone he meets
Morgan receives her award at Honor’s Day in May;

After studying about Social Justice in their
Theology IV class, St. Benedict seniors were given
the assignment to address a social injustice in
their community through a service project. This
group of seniors, (from left) Kellie Hicks, Katie
Hicks, Rachel Nevle, Rebecca Butcher and
Sarah Jones chose Birthright of Memphis as the
beneficiary of their bake sale fund raisers. Through
their efforts, they made over $200 that they used
to purchase supplies for newborn babies, to help
restock the shelves at Birthright. They also raised
awareness of the mission of Birthright and how
others can get involved and volunteer. In addition to
serving Birthright, St. Benedict seniors helped over
25 charitable organizations in the Memphis area.
In Memoriam
The faculty, staff and students of St. Benedict at Auburndale offer our most sincere condolences to

SBA - BOP® Winners,
Again, This Year!
Downbeat Selects Jazz Soul Band As The
Nation’s Best
For the third consecutive
year, SBA athletics won the
Division II Large School Team
award at the 42nd Annual
Commercial Appeal Pepsi
Best of the Preps Award
ceremony on June 10. SBA also had
the largest number of finalists in the private school
division for the senior special awards with four, the
most a school can nominate, and a selection – Julie
Eckel as Female Athlete of the Year.
The Pepsi BOP program is the culmination of the
Commercial Appeal’s recognition of prep sports in
the Metro area over the school year. SBA also had
55 All-Metro and other BOP awardees and was 2nd
overall in the female division team award.
DownBeat Magazine, host of the annual
DownBeat Awards, considered one of the most
prestigious music honors nationally in the field
of jazz education, recognized the SBA Jazz Soul
Band as the nation’s best for Blues/Pop/Rock
for 2011. The SBA program has won this award
before in 2008 and was recognized for Outstanding
Performance in 2009. “The DownBeat Student
Music Awards (SMA) program is among the
highest honors student musicians can receive,” said
DownBeat Magazine publisher Frank Alkyer. “The
awards have come to be known as the ‘Grammy
Awards’ for student music.” The awards were
announced in DownBeat’s June edition. There are
15 categories and five separate divisions (junior
high, high school, performing high school, college
and graduate college). This year’s DownBeat
competition drew a total of 856 ensemble and
individual entries for all categories in all five divisions.
SBA’s Instrumental music teacher and director of
the band commented, “Winning a DownBeat SMA
Award is another milestone achievement for our
program. It is one of the highest possible awards
a school music program can receive and we are
extremely proud of our talented students.”
Mr. Valadie was proud to share the glory with
BOP awardees on hand for the event, (from

volunteerism and public service in communities,

freshman Gabbie Johnson. As the leadership team,
their efforts included collaborating with all the service
clubs and the Communications Office to develop a
PowerPoint program that was presented to the judges
this past spring. Jackson Butler represented SBA in
the development and presentation. Spotlighted in the
presentation were the annual efforts on behalf of the
Mid-South Food Bank, LifeBlood, Club St. Jude “Pull
Tab” collections and the pro-life efforts on behalf of Life
Choices, Birthright and the annual March for Life.
Mr. Valadie is always open to students’ ideas for
serving others. He said, “Just as we teach students to
learn math, the sciences, etc., we wish for our students
to also learn the importance of helping others less
fortunate.” While SBA’s service is not an effort to gain an
award, it is worthy of recognition. Only 25 schools out
of 500 are selected for the award and SBA is certainly
worthy of being one of the 25.

especially having three All-Americans from one team
in a season. About 250 wrestlers from across the
country at all grade levels participated. Seven SBA
wrestling team members participated in the
tournament sponsored by Brute-Adidas and Dick’s
Sporting Goods.
