WHAT TO DO
CHÂTEAU D’AUVERS
The show 'Voyage au temps des Impressionnistes' (A journey
through the Impressionist era) plunges visitors to the château
into the atmosphere of Haussmannian Paris and its cabarets.
It offers an introduction to absinthe, the fashions of the late
1880s, train travel and the famous Saint-Lazare station,
journeys to the coast, painters and their floating studios.

FONDATION LOUIS VUITTON
A new artistic and cultural venue in the west of Paris, the
Louis Vuitton Fondation presents a collection of contemporary
art, organises temporary exhibitions and also other artistic
events. Among its priorities is a mission to provide education,
particularly for young visitors, through informative activities.
The romantic city of Paris is a cultural melting pot of fashion, food, art,
architecture and French joie de vivre. With a capacity to surprise at every
turn, it’s a place you simply must visit at least once. As Ernest Hemingway

MUSÉE PICASSO PARIS
In the heart of the Marais district, the Hotel Salé has housed the
Musée national Picasso since 1985. The museum has recently
been totally redesigned and restored, with two extra floors
offering a total of 17 exhibition rooms. Its unique collection
boasts 5,000 of the painter’s pieces and much of his private
collection, covering his entire career, from 1895 to 1972.
It's time to discover the real Paris...
Paris is known as The City of Light ('La Ville Lumière') both because of its leading role
during the Age of Enlightenment, and more literally because Paris was one of the first
European cities to adopt gas street lighting.
The city of Paris is renowned among foreign tourists due to
its unrivalled heritage in terms of culture, architecture and
leisure activities. But relatively few visitors venture into
the wider realms of the Paris Region, which has wonderful
offerings for tourists. New events and sites to visit are
also being added each year – for example in 2014 exciting
exhibitions at the Musée Picasso, special events at the Parc
Zoologique and lets not forget the Louis Vuitton Foundation,
which is becoming an increasingly popular attraction for
overseas visitors. In 2015 the Philharmonie de Paris will
also be making several performances locally.
Many sites across the capital’s wider region contribute to
the destination's global reputation, including three UNESCO
World Heritage sites. To the south, there is Château de
Fontainebleau and its 130-hectare park and gardens, the
only royal and imperial palace to have been lived in over
seven centuries. A few kilometres away, the Château de
Vaux le Vicomte – the largest private palace in France – is
a treasure that inspired the creation of another. Whereas, to
the west of Paris, the estate of Versailles, beloved by Louis
XIV is as spectacular as royal residences come.

We’d all love to know
more about buying wine,
but most of us, if we're
honest, buy by price or
by what the label looks
like. There's nothing
wrong with that but we
have a few tips and an
interesting quiz that will
help you improve your
knowledge and impress
your friends.
BE A PRO WITH WHAT YOU KNOW...
Find two or three types of wine you like and stick with them.
Read up on their characteristics: for example, a Cabernet’s going to be
fruity, with big berry flavours, whereas a decent Chenin will be soft and
buttery. That way you’ll have something relevant to say about them.
NEVER PLAY WINE LIST ROULETTE...
Are you a 'second cheapest on the list' buyer? Restaurants bank on
the fact that no one wants to be seen as a tightwad by ordering the
cheapest. But the second cheapest? That says, “I’m on a budget but
I’m not a skinflint,” right? Trouble is, it’s where the restaurant hides
its biggest margin.
BE NOSEY...
When someone serves you a glass of wine, don’t just knock it back.
Part of the beauty of a good wine is the aromas, which also tell you
a lot about what you’re about to taste. Tilt the glass slightly and give
it a swirl (holding by the stem of the glass). This gets air in and helps
release the scents. Then take a good deep sniff, then think about what
you can smell. What comes to mind? Fruit? Spice? Chocolate? All good.
Trust your nose.
CORKING MYTHS...
If you don’t like a particular wine, it doesn’t mean it’s corked. The term
“corked” actually means that the wine has come into contact with a
cork that’s contaminated with TCA: that’s 2,4,6-Trichloroanisole to you.
Insisting that a wine’s corked to a sommelier just because you don’t
like the taste of it will not make you popular.
MIND YOUR LANGUAGE...
The world of wine is full of prosaic terms, and if you’re not sure
when to use them, don’t. Don’t go saying things like, “ooh, wonderfully
complex” if all you can taste is a big dollop of blackberries or a smash
of citrus. A wine doesn’t have to be complicated to be enjoyable.
KEEP IT FRESH...
You’ve had a glass of white with your starter, and the table’s moving
on to red to go with the main course. Don’t say, “stick it in here,” and
offer up the same glass. Always, always get a clean fresh glass for each
wine you drink. And know your white wine glass (smaller) from your
red glass (larger), too. The red needs more room to be swirled, letting
all that air in as mentioned above.
Above all, drink what you like. If you like it, it's good.

People keep telling me that it’s important to be legal when
driving in France. But what exactly does that mean in 2015?
To find out more, I set off across the Channel with the kids in
tow… and our latest DFDS European Motoring kit.

Before leaving there are a few things to prepare. Our
UK headlights cause dazzle on the continent and this
apparently makes the French Gendarmes very unhappy!
So, the first job is for the kids to fit the surprisingly simple
Headlamp Adaptors onto the front of Vanessa VW – yes,
my car has a name. There is also a handy Universal Bulb
Kit included as you’ll be in for a spot fine if your lights
don’t work.
A Magnetic GB plate is then quickly applied, so that
everyone knows we’re not local and makes allowances for
my driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. As if
I would?
To make sure we’re all safe in the event of a breakdown
– and I don’t mean the sort of breakdown that being with
two children in a confined space can set off – the kit also
contains a Hi-Vis Vest and a Warning Triangle. If you set it
at least 50 metres behind the car, it helps to give plenty of
advance warning to approaching motorists.
The main surprise however is that legally I need to carry at
least one new Breathalyser in France. I’m told that you can
be fined just for not having one of these in your car so there
are two in the kit just to make sure you still have one in the
event of you checking your lunchtime consumption – not
that I managed any on this trip. And this is probably a good
idea if you’re enjoying that famous French hospitality as the
drink and drive limit is 40% lower than the UK.
Apart from the usual back-seat squabbles, you’ll be pleased
to know that our trip went off without incident; exactly the
way I like it. Confident that we weren’t going to be in trouble
if stopped, we returned home with Vanessa VW jam-packed
with enough cheese and wine to last the summer.

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF
OPERATION DYNAMO
As we merrily travel across the English Channel, from Dover to
Dunkerque and back again, it’s worth taking some time out to
remember the sacrifice and bravery that took place in Dunkerque
some 75 years ago.
EVENTS LEADING UP
TO THE EVACUATION
On the 10th May 1940, German army group ‘B’
invaded Holland, Luxembourg and Belgium. In
response, three allied armies were committed
to the river Dyle to counter-attack. At the same
time, German army group ‘A’ burst through the
Ardennes and advanced very quickly towards
the French coast and the English Channel.
By taking Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais,
the Germans succeeded in surrounding the
allied troops in the so-called ‘sickle cut’
movement of forces. Holland capitulated on
the 15th May, and Belgium on the 28th.
Facing an enemy which was better equipped and
which outnumbered the allied troops, retreat
was the only option for the French armies and
the British Expeditionary Force, which had been
stationed on the continent since the beginning
of the ‘Phoney War’ in September 1939.
15,000 French and British troops
defended a narrow perimeter to prevent
the Germans from taking Dunkerque.
Thanks to the sacrifices of these soldiers, a
rag-tag fleet of around 1,400 mainly British,
but also French, Belgian and Dutch ships,
succeeded in rescuing more than 338,000 soldiers
from the beaches and the eastern mole.
On the 4th June, at dawn, the last ship left Dunkerque
and the Germans entered the city that was in ruins.
The success of the biggest evacuation in military
history, a ‘Disaster turned into a triumph’, giving
these soldiers the opportunity to fight again later in
the war, gave a great boost to British morale, and is
now seen as a major turning point of World War II.
