– Karen Chiappone
“Having been raised on a farm in upstate New York, I
realized at a young age how incredible the taste of a vineripened tomato could be. I remember driving our tractor to
the orchard so I could reach apples high in the trees, and
picking and eating an entire basket of raspberries. Food
has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
I watched my grandmother make pasta with her broom
handle and hang it from the ceiling on coat hangers. I was
so inspired by the delicious meals she would create from
just a few simple ingredients that I would spend hours in
the kitchen trying to decipher her Italian family recipes
that had been passed down for generations. Sometimes the
results were disastrous, but with my family’s encouragement
I persevered.”
“Years later I decided to turn my passion for cooking into a business. I studied at cooking
schools such as Tante Marie’s, Judith Ets-Hokins, and Giuliano Gugialli’s in Florence,
Italy, where I was also chosen to be his assistant. I then started a personal chef and catering
business, which I ran for many years. Eventually, I decided to realize my dream of owning my
own cooking school, so I moved to Florida and opened Cucina Mia cooking school and retail
store.”
“Since returning to the Bay Area last year, I have assisted celebrity chefs and taught classes at
Draeger’s Cooking Schools. Recently I have taken a position as Chef at Cellar360. It is truly
an honor and a pleasure to work with such talented people who also share my vision, and I am
very excited about all the new things we will be introducing this fall.”
