Spring - Feist-Weiller Cancer Center
SPRING 2015 Feist-Weiller Cancer Center THE CURE LIES IN RESEARCH Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is the only academic cancer center in north Louisiana. The difference between a traditional cancer center and an academic cancer center is an emphasis on research. The faculty of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center has a commitment to research that is bringing us one step closer to curing cancer with each new discovery. The Idea Grants give the scientists $20,000 to $80,000 to pursue their new idea and develop preliminary findings. Using these new findings they can then go after much larger funding ($200,000– $500,000) from the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Department of Defense and other national sources. Our investigators have been able to leverage $1.4 million in Idea grants into $11.4 in national funding. New funding is needed to highlight some new findings. Some of the research happening now at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is helping to make life-saving discoveries in the following areas: Feist-Weiller Cancer Center Director Glenn Mills, MD, along with researchers in New York, Boston, Seattle, and Minneapolis, have worked together to create a set of screening criteria for colon cancer through guidelines for colonoscopy screenings. This is the first set of guidelines for colon cancer screening, and the system will help doctors catch potential colon cancers earlier for better treatment and prognoses for patients. This research was funded by a National Cancer Institute grant and another Basic Scientist Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research grant. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 A M ESSAG E F ROM TH E D I R ECTOR GLENN MILLS, MD FACP Cancer IN LOUISIANA I hope all of you had the opportunity to watch the “Emperor of All Maladies” on LPB. This is a wonderful Ken Burns documentary on the story of cancer research and treatment in our country from the 1940’s to the present. It is amazing the progress we have made and what the future holds for cancer treatment. As part of the cancer week celebration I had an opportunity to participate in a special LPB broadcast - Cancer in Louisiana - before the premier of the documentary. I was one of 4 “cancer experts” who formed a panel to field questions from the studio audience of people with cancer, cancer survivors and volunteers from cancer support organizations. The breadth and depth of the questions by the audience was impressive. Prior to the show LPB had done a survey to assess the knowledge and opinions of citizens in our state. The answer to one of the questions was quite surprising to me. When asked what is the most common cause of “Cancer in Louisiana”, over 40% of the respondents said environmental pollution and toxins, 30% said diet and only 10% said smoking. While it is true that 30% of the cancer in our state is related to diet, 40% is due to smoking. Environmental toxins cause less than 5% of the cancers in Louisiana. Variation: Landscape with Butterflies by Salvador Dali Painted In Grids By Cancer Patients And Their Supportive Friends & Family ARTS IN MEDICINE has received grants from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) with funds from the Louisiana Division of the Arts and a second grant from SRAC with funds from the City of Shreveport. We all need to be reminded that smoking is the number one cause of cancer in our state. We have one of the highest smoking rates in the country for both adults and children. It is estimated that the health care costs related to smoking in our state are almost $1.5 billion dollars and that over $660 million dollars are spent annually by our state in Medicaid dollars to take care of patients with cancer, lung and heart disease all induced by smoking. That means that every household in Louisiana spends $663 tax dollars to care for these smokers. Smokers miss more days of work and their children have more health issues. Clearly we need to do a better job of tackling this problem and reducing smoking in our state. I encourage all of you to get involved. Help us reduce smoking! If you are interested in learning more about this problem and possible solutions I encourage you to go to The Tobacco Free Kids Organizations web site — www.tobaccofreekids.org — to learn more. Visit the FWCC home page and follow the link on smoking for more information on this topic. I would be happy to talk to anyone who would like to have more information and learn how to get involved at (318) 813-1423. THE CURE LIES IN RESEARCH CONTINUED FROM FRONT COVER The Innovative North Louisiana Experimental Therapeutics Program (INLET) in Shreveport is focused on the discovery and development of a wide range of drugs that affect multiple diseases in humans, including cancer, diabetes, fungal infection, and neurological disorders. Lead by Jim Cardelli PhD, INLET has developed partnerships with many of the Louisiana Universities, start up companies and venture capitalists to generate a revenue stream to fund movement of drugs from the discovery phase through commercialization of medicines. MN, FNP-CP, found through their research who is most likely to contract Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and why the virus stays with certain people while the virus is cleared by others’ immune system. HPV is a leading cause of cervical cancer in women, and head and neck cancers in both men and women. The team found that 41.9% of women ages 18-59 tested positive for HPV, and factors like education, socioeconomic status, marriage status, and having health insurance coverage are all inversely related to women’s HPV risk. Feist-Weiller Medical Oncologist and faculty member Prakash Peddi, MD, and Head and Neck Surgery Director and Otolaryngologist Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD, FACS, discovered that patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck had better outcomes on the chemotherapy drug cisplatin than patients who received cetuximab. Even at lower than recommended doses, cisplatin was found to be more effective at weaker doses than cetuximab. The research also found that patients who took cisplatin had fewer disease relapses and lived longer than those who took cetuximab. Finally, LSU Health Shreveport microbiologist Lindsey HuttFletcher, PhD, has been studying Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), which is one of the eight herpes viruses, and most commonly known as the virus that causes infectious mononucleosis in adolescents. The virus is responsible for causing cancers like Hodgkin’s and Burkitt’s lymphoma, along with head and neck cancers. Dr. Fletcher has discovered how EBV invades healthy cells, which will help her to develop a vaccine for EBV. Feist-Weiller Biostatistician Runhua Shi, MD, MPH, PhD, along with Medical Oncologists Srinivas Devarakonda, MD, and Glenn Mills, MD, FACP, and Nurse Practitioner Lihong Liu, All of these exciting research projects, and many others, have been made possible through Feist-Weiller Cancer Center’s dedication to discovery through research. For more information about the research happening at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, please visit our website at www.feistweiller.org. Established over 20 years ago, this fund has helped thousands of cancer patients at Feist-Weiller. The rising cost of medicine has more than doubled in recent years along with the number of patients who need help. Over the last 12 months, over 1,251 prescriptions have been covered by this fund — costing over $36,000. This money comes from generous donations for community. In order to continue to help our cancer patients Feist-Weiller needs to raise $3,000 each month.
