Allen 13th September 2012 SAMI • 13 hexabundles • Each bundle has 61 fibres • Fibres have 1.6” diameter • Hexabundles have 14.9” FoV • Feeds the AAOmega spectrograph • Blue 370-570nm R~1700; Red 640-750nm R~4700 • Will be upgraded at end of 2012 James T. Allen 13th September 2012 The SAMI survey(s) • Pilot survey: 10 nights in September/October, >100 galaxies • Full survey: proposal to observe ~500 galaxies next semester, with 3000+ to follow • Broad range of science goals including kinematics, spatially-resolved stellar populations, star formation, AGN feedback, abundance gradients, effects of environment... James T. Allen 13th September 2012 ESO 185-G031 •z = 0.016 •Distance 68 Mpc •Fibre 540 pc •FoV 5070 pc •SFR ~ 1.7 M /yr •SFR surface density ~ 0.24 M /yr/kpc o o James T. Allen 2 13th September 2012 SAMI observations • 4.5hr dithered + 1.5hr pointed observations from July 2011 commissioning data James T. Allen 13th September 2012 Kinematics James T. Allen 13th September 2012 Emission line maps • Strong increase in [NII]/Ha seen when moving away from the plane of the disc • Similar pattern seen in [SII]/Ha, [OI]/Ha and [OIII]/Hb James T. Allen 13th September 2012 Ionisation diagnostics • Outer regions are not consistent with photoionisation by stars • Single aperture of any size would not see this signal James T. Allen 13th September 2012 Acceleration mechanism • Ionisation diagnostic diagrams are somewhat ambiguous, but are a closer match to a wind driven by star formation than AGN • Star formation rate density is sufficient to launch a wind • Doesn’t appear in SUMSS or AT20G radio catalogues, suggesting not AGN • Most likely explanation: wind driven by star formation James T. Allen 13th September 2012 Summary • Outflowing material and extended emission discovered in two objects in SAMI commissioning data • Could not have been observed in single-fibre spectrum of any aperture • SAMI survey will provide many more serendipitous discoveries, as part of large statistically-robust sample James T.
