DAVID SOFFA 2013–15 Board President I n 2013, at my first annual meeting as board president, I stood up and talked about the fact that we were in the middle of difficult times at Beth Sholom. We were dealing with the effects of several years of displacement during construction, the difficulties of getting settled into a new building, and a wonderful rabbi facing daunting personal family challenges. We were experiencing, or about to experience, a change in our senior rabbi, executive director, financial personnel, and director of congregational learning. Our office staff was demoralized, and accounting and finance were not up to the task. Activities were down. Our Board and committees were overwhelmed. A significant building debt with a short remaining time frame was hanging over all of our heads. At that time, two years ago, we had found ourselves in a rather unlucky place. However, if I’ve learned anything in my life, it’s to be optimistic. At that annual meeting, I remember talking about the opportunity before all of us. We were serving Beth Sholom during a time in which we could really make a difference. The congregation rallied, and people stepped up to the challenge. Members stepped up to lead a robust rabbi search. You stepped up to fill our committees. You stepped up to encourage new programming. You stepped up 02 / C O N G R E G AT I O N B E T H S H O L O M with your feedback; your financial contributions; with your very presence at services and community gatherings. In all of these ways, and countless more, you continued supporting Beth Sholom when it needed your support most. Today, we are on solid footing for the first time in years. Our Board and committees are restructured and re-energized. We have many new wonderful board members. Our Finance, Education, and Community Engagement Committees are robust and fully functional. Our educational and b’nai mitzvah programming continues to expand. We have a beautiful building, and an executive director who has the professionalism and programming ideas to fill it with activity and community. We have an incredible new rabbi with a powerful vision for this congregation, and for our significance in San Francisco. Reflecting on where we’ve been and where we are now, I feel blessed to have served during such interesting times. This congregation was tested—and we proved ourselves. We learned how strong we are, and we turned things around. This annual report proves it. Now, we’re ready to take off. Scott Horwitz, our new board president, is the perfect person to lead us. He understands the spiritual heart of this congregation, and he has the vision to take us further. I can’t wait to see where we’ll go from here. FROM T HE Executive Director ANGEL ALVAREZ-MAPP I keep a photo album on my desk, filled with pictures from Rabbi Glazer’s installation. That event was such an important one to all of us at Congregation Beth Sholom, and one of my favorites from the past year. We all banded together to celebrate. People showed up who hadn’t been to synagogue in a very long time. People were dancing in the sanctuary. It was joyous. That energy is a sign of the times, I think. Beth Sholom went through some challenging years, but those years are now behind us. And across the many facets of this congregation, from its ritual to its programming to its staff and volunteers, I’m noticing a renewed sense of vitality. Over the past year, we have been especially focused on financial stewardship. It is paying off: our records are in order, and we are finally in a position to investigate restructuring our building mortgage, alleviating a sizable financial burden. We are creating revenue in new areas, such as increased building rentals, and will continue to do so. At the same time, our charitable contributions are up. Our membership numbers are stabilizing for the first time in recent years. We’ve learned a lot about programming, by trying out a number of new events and approaches over the past year and keeping track of what works best for this community. This year’s calendar of activities will reflect everything we learned. We’ll continue to improve and expand our music offerings. We’ll look for ways to gather religious school and preschool families into holiday events, capturing a larger multigenerational group. We secured a grant from the Tauber Foundation, increasing our Kevah offerings from F R O M S T R E N G T H T O S T R E N G T H three to five groups, and we’ll continue adding educational seminars, visiting scholars, and retreats. These are just the broad strokes; the rest of this annual report provides a closer look at the many ways that we are moving forward and creating a more inspiring and vibrant community. I want to thank our staff for working hard every day to realize these goals. And I want to thank every one of you for your patience and commitment through the transitions of past years. We came through stronger than ever. We now know our direction and we have some momentum. We just need to carry it forward. When I look at my photo album from Rabbi Glazer’s installation, I am reminded of how special this community is. As this annual report shows, we did great work this past year. We’ll do even more in the year ahead. 2 0 1 5 A N N U A L R E P O R T / 03 F ROM THE Rabbi AUBREY L. GLAZER, Ph.D. “Jewish law is a cry for creativity; a call for nobility concealed in the form of commandments. … All observance is training in the art of love. … to evoke the devotion of the heart.” —Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, God in Search of Man W hat an inspiring year it has been. Within and beyond the exquisite walls of this synagogue, Congregation Beth Sholom continues to train us all in the art of loving and living meaningful lives, offering spiritual nourishment as well as intellectual stimulation. Here are just a few gems from the past year. Tefillah: The integrity of our core Shabbat prayer services and learning is growing stronger and attracting new seekers. Lifecycle events are being celebrated joyously and poignantly, drawing from the wellspring of tradition as well as innovating new expressions to mark meaningful life passages. I am honored to support our communal family in times of joy and sorrow, happiness and healing. Together we are stronger. We were blessed to have our next generation of United Synagogue Youth leaders and Madrichim lead a Shabbat service in the 04 / C O N G R E G AT I O N B E T H S H O L O M main sanctuary this year, which was truly moving—kindling renewed hope for the future, culminating in a joyous blessing, and binding parents and young adults to this community for the future. Torah: Lifelong learning experienced a robust renewal this year at Beth Sholom: from parashah study to weekday morning Nuggets of Wisdom; from early Torah commentaries of the Eretz Yisrael Yishuv to the Jewish philosophy and theology of medieval masters. Our stellar scholar-in-residence program welcomed Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Philip Schultz, explored American Post-Judaism with Drs. Shaul Magid and Marc Dollinger, and presented musical guests Basya Schacter and Jaffa Road. Next year, I intend to offer even more diverse learning opportunities in modern Jewish philosophy, mysticism, and halacha, both in class at Beth Sholom and online. I will also have the privilege of teaching a Zohar class at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco (JCCSF), leading our Bay Area community in the study of Danny Matts’ historic translation. I hope you’ll be inspired and enriched by all of these programs. Taking hold of Torah can be a practice we all engage in, no matter where we are or for how long. “The main function of [religious] observance is not in imposing discipline but in keeping us spiritually perceptive.” Avodah: The core of our spiritual work—the Avodah bequeathed to us by Rabbi Lew, (z”l)—is Jewish meditation. This remains a unique pillar of Congregation Beth Sholom. I have been dedicating more time to Makor Or retreats within our own Makom Sholom as well as at the JCCSF. I invite more of you to partake—there is nothing like it in the world! In allowing our devotional work and volunteer service to return to its core in meditation, we are able to see more clearly Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s truth: “The main function of [religious] observance is not in imposing discipline but in keeping us spiritually perceptive.” When we are mindful and perceptive, we are blessed to live and practice a Judaism that lights the edifices of our lives and allows them to grow stronger and clearer. I remain inspired by and deeply grateful for the opportunity to engage our communal family at Congregation Beth Sholom. I continue striving to find each of you where you are; to nourish, guide, meditate, teach, and learn together to deepen our individual journeys in sacred community. Together we are building remarkable meeting points in our souls. Join us on the journey already underway! Mia is a theater actress and playwright. Many of her solo performances, commissioned by such institutions as SFMOMA and The Marsh Theater, deal with identity and language—so she gravitates to facts like these. “Joy ties into what I saw the first time I came to Beth Sholom,” she says. “Kids running up and down the stairway; people talking to their friends. Life doesn’t stop when you come in the door.” Mia grew up in a secular household. She remembers feeling drawn to Judaism as a child; then again, five years ago, when she stumbled upon several meditation books for Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. It set her on the path to learn more, and eventually to Beth Sholom. She was seeking a synagogue that was inclusive and open, she says, “where dialogue and questioning and diversity were welcomed.” She converted here three years ago. Mia volunteers on the Community Engagement Committee, and delights in the sense of family and friendship she feels at services. Beth Sholom taps into a different side of her, she says. “Being part of this community of people, who all want to be part of something greater – that has made me feel more connected to everyone,” she says. “More connected to San Francisco. More connected to myself. Having a spiritual home has had more of an impact on me than I would’ve imagined. It’s a kind of quiet comfort. A solid foundation.” F R O M S T R E N G T H T O S T R E N G T H 2 0 1 5 A N N U A L R E P O R T / 09 10 / C O N G R E G AT I O N B E T H S H O L O M TH E RAMOS FAMILY “R abbi Lew always told us: ‘Don’t forget your roots,’” says Nestor Ramos. “‘Don’t forget where you came from and where you’re going to end up. Whenever you have kids, don’t forgot what you have to teach them.’” Nestor and his wife, Lorena, both grew up in Guatemala in Jewish families, connected to their heritage especially through their grandparents. But neither was part of a larger Jewish community. They met, married, and moved to San Francisco. There, Nestor’s dad introduced them to Rabbi Lew, and Congregation Beth Sholom. It woke them up, as Nestor puts it. “It was like an alarm in the morning: This is the time for us, for our kids,” he says. “We have this community we always wished for. We better start coming to it.” The Ramos family—Nestor, Lorena, daughter Dorkhas, and son Jerry—are familiar faces around Beth Sholom these days. They fit in as many congregation activities as they can. Often on Shabbat, Jerry is called forward to help say the Shema during the Torah service. It’s special F R O M S T R E N G T H T O S T R E N G T H for the whole family, Lorena says. She is touched by how kind and accepting everyone is. “That’s what Rabbi Lew was telling us: We need to all come together and be friends right now,” says Nestor. “That’s something that I’ve been feeling in this congregation. No matter your background, no matter your race, your education, or position, the congregation is always open and welcoming. It’s a blessing.” “I feel it in my heart,” Lorena says. “I feel at home.” “We have this community we always wished for. We better start coming to it.” 2 0 1 5 A N N U A L R E P O R T / 11 M ost Friday nights, Betty Newman’s home is filled with the smells of cooking and the sounds of family and friends. These weekly Shabbat dinners are a tradition that she and her late husband, Harry, began early in their marriage. BETTY NEWMAN “As soon as one dinner was over, Harry would ask, ‘Who will we have over next week?’” Betty says. Many of the guests around their table have been Beth Sholom congregants. She and Harry joined the synagogue in 1973 and became active in the social chavurah group. “The congregation was very warm and inviting. We just felt comfortable there,” Betty says. “I have fond memories of all the friends we’ve made.” Betty is known around Beth Sholom for her cooking. In the 1980s and 1990s, she wrote a food column for the Northern California Jewish Bulletin; last year, she compiled those recipes into a cookbook, The Joy of Jewish Cooking. For many years, she was also a volunteer in the Beth Sholom kitchen. She remembers cooking for Friday dinners at the synagogue, and making pound upon pound of hamantaschen for the annual Purim carnival. But her most powerful memory at Beth Sholom was 11 years ago, when she and her dear friend Carol Weitz stood before the congregation at their B’not Mitzvah. Many months prior, the two friends had decided to study Hebrew together. It was Harry who encouraged them to take it further. “Harry urged us to set a goal,” Betty says. “He suggested that we work toward a Bat Mitzvah. It was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.” 12 / C O N G R E G AT I O N B E T H S H O L O M “The congregation was very warm and inviting. His search ended on a Friday, with his first visit to Beth Sholom. When he brought Stacy—then his girlfriend—she felt it, too: The people engaged and energized them. The mission of social justice resonated with them. They felt they could connect to a core part of themselves here, individually and as a couple. “That sense of community grounded us,” says Stacy. “At the end of a long week we could go to Kabbalat Shabbat services and recenter ourselves.” They were married at Beth Sholom in 2011. Today Hubert serves on Beth Sholom’s Finance Committee, and Stacy serves on the Board of Directors. For the past five years, they have vol- BANS unteered together at Chicken Soupers. They both admire the energy of the congregation right now, during a period that Hubert describes as a “regeneration.” New members are joining and long-time members are getting involved in new ways. The Kabbalat Shabbat, such an important part of their experience, is evolving with new musical services and more families in attendance. “I think Beth Sholom can really engage all generations. There’s something for everyone,” says Stacy. She and Hubert believe that Beth Sholom can extend that spirit of connection further in San Francisco’s Jewish community, creating as much meaning for others as it has for them. “The shul is a big part of our lives,” says Hubert. “It’s a big part of who we are.” “I think Beth Sholom can really engage all generations. There’s something for everyone” F R O M S T R E N G T H T O S T R E N G T H 2 0 1 5 A N N U A L R E P O R T / 17 I f I had to pick one word to describe our educational mission at Beth Sholom, it would be inclusive. From the preschool to our adult programs, we want to be accessible and welcoming, and to provide learning not only to the student but to the family. This kind of education creates connection, and through it, community. Each week I help lead the Friday preschool Shabbat program for our youngest learners, 2 to 5 years old. It’s one of my favorite parts of the week. And I am reminded of it all week long, because whenever I pass the preschool children in the hallways, they exclaim with delight in anticipation of the fun we’ll have. That’s the kind of feeling that will keep them involved in Beth Sholom as they grow. This gets to the heart of my teaching philosophy: Jewish education has to be fun and enjoyable to be successful. I think we’re achieving it at Beth Sholom. “Jewish education has to be fun and enjoyable to be successful. I think we’re achieving it at Beth Sholom.” 18 / C O N G R E G AT I O N B E T H S H O L O M This was a tremendous year for our education programs. The preschool led memorable, hands-on learning experiences tailored for young learners, from Model Seder to a boisterous Israel Independence Day celebration. Although it was a year of transition at the director level, our amazing teachers Education MICHAEL LEDERMAN Director of Congregational Learning remained focused on creating special, engaging lessons for each child. Our Religious School, or Shabbat School, grew by nearly 20 percent—a remarkable increase. We’ve got a dynamic youth group advisor in place. Our USY youth group was recognized as the most improved chapter in the New Frontier Region. Our b’nai mitzvah program expanded dramatically—from five children last year to 22 this year—and along with it, we created a b’nai mitzvah concierge position and launched a family chavurah program. We welcomed new faculty at both the preschool and Religious School, including new song leaders and a rabbinic intern to provide education to our teens. For our many adult learners, we offered a busy and varied schedule of lectures, discussions, and classes, led by an inspiring roster of scholars, authors, congregants, and our own Rabbi Glazer. We partnered with the organization Kevah, which matches small groups of adults with trained Jewish educators in their area of interest. This year, Beth Sholom congregants came together in three of these Kevah groups. By the time of our next annual report, we will have five groups, engaging even more of you in community building and lifelong learning. F R O M S T R E N G T H T O S T R E N G T H The exciting takeaway here is that our education programs are popular, and due to their popularity they’re attracting additional participants and new members to the congregation. They’re only going to continue growing and improving. We should be very proud of these programs, our wonderful faculty, and most of all, our learners. At every age, Beth Sholom learners are enthusiastic and curious. It’s an honor to help spark their desire for knowledge, and deepen their connection to this incredible community. 2 0 1 5 A N N U A L R E P O R T / 19 F R O M TH E N E W President SCOTT HORWITZ 2015–17 Board President “Come to Congregation Beth Sholom, and engage yourself in this community.” I start this message, and this year, with this broad invitation. For the 17 years that Missy and I have been members, it is the ritual of the place that has especially resonated with me. I am moved, and inspired, by the idea that our lay community adroitly reads Torah and leads daily morning and evening minyan, Shabbat, and holiday services. Attending services, davening, deepening my connection to people and rich history through the Ritual Committee—these are some of my most cherished moments at Beth Sholom. But ritual is just one of our congregation’s many strengths. We are known for our unique blend of tradition and progress. We are known for our inspiring spiritual leaders, and for our legacy as a voice for social justice. We are known for our community’s warmth and openness. We are a place for Conservative Judaism, but we are also a home for meditation. We gather together for celebration and fun, but we also gather to worship, study, and support each other, and all of San Francisco, through difficult times. Over the last few years it took a great deal of leadership and community support to keep everything running smoothly here at Beth Sholom. Thanks to the efforts of many, we are poised to start a new chapter. We’ve 20 / C O N G R E G AT I O N B E T H S H O L O M restored the fields, we’ve planted the seeds, and now it’s time to grow. As I step into the role of board president, I am honored to be part of this growth phase. Our mission now is to maximize our strengths, and apply them to our future. What will it mean to be a synagogue in the next 50 years? What do we want our legacy to be—among our own congregants? Among the larger Bay Area Jewish community? As a modern yet traditional synagogue, we have a unique and important voice. Let’s establish ourselves as a source of innovation and discussion. Let’s give the Bay Area community even more reasons to call Beth Sholom its home for Conservative Judaism and for Jews in search of meaning and practice. In the year ahead, I’m excited to be an ambassador for Beth Sholom to the surrounding Jewish community. I’m also excited to broaden my own involvement right here at home, finding new ways to connect with the synagogue and my fellow congregants. I’m excited to reflect on our many strengths as a congregation, and help them grow. I am writing today so that you will join me. Engage in this unique community. Let us know what’s working, and what you need more of. Get to know its strengths. Lend your own. We have solid ground beneath us, and the road ahead is bright.
