Reaching New Heights
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Reaching New Heights
A message from
Our President and Chairman
F
amily Centers encourages the children,
families and adults who utilize its
services to dream big and set their
sights high by providing them with the tools
and encouragement they need to overcome
life’s obstacles. Together, we play an active
role in helping our communities “Reach
New Heights.”
By way of example, Family Centers has six
health clinics that serve local youth. This past
September, we opened our newest School
Based Health Center in partnership with
Stamford Public Schools at Cloonan Middle
School. This clinic allows an additional 575
students – many of whom are uninsured –
to receive quality medical, mental health,
dental and health education services. These
clinics ensure that nearly 10,000 students
in Stamford have the services they need to
remain healthy each year.
2 FAMILY CENTERS 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Family Centers is a true community provider.
It operates 14 licensed facilities, and provides
programs out of 51 sites throughout Darien,
Greenwich, New Canaan and Stamford. Its
expanding network of service locations reach
into the community to find the people who
need assistance. Last year, we helped more
than 22,500 people through the remarkable
work of 200+ professionals and 2,800
volunteers. Collaboration with partners such
as Charter Oak Communities, the Stamford
Board of Education, the City of Stamford,
Greenwich Housing Authority, Greenwich
Department of Social Services and many
others offered gateways to populations most
in need of assistance.
Resources need to be gathered and managed
to dispense this high volume of services.
Client fees and philanthropic dollars subsidize
these services, with private foundation grants,
annual giving and special events contributing
over $3 million to Family Centers in 2014. We
are grateful to all who chaired and worked
on our fund drives and events, and to the
sponsors and participants who supported
them. We also extend our appreciation to
Jane Fonda and Arianna Huffington for
generously donating their time to benefit
our cause.
Family Centers must have a clear road map
in place if it is to maintain these achievement
levels. In the spring, the board and leadership
staff completed its Strategic Directions
for 2014-2016, reaffirming our mission and
objectives and setting forth the path for the
next two years.
We encourage you to read the client stories
included in this report and to visit our

Bright
Beginnings
F
ive years ago, Katherine
Olivera’s life was at a
crossroad. She had recently
learned that she was pregnant
with her first child, and was
facing the reality of becoming a
single parent. It was during this
time that Katherine began to
take a hard look at her life and
decided that changes needed to
be made.
Overwhelmed, scared and
somewhat depressed, Katherine
decided that therapy was the
only way to “fix the ghosts” in
her past. Within her first few
sessions with the Counseling &
Mental Health Services program,
she found that having a forum
where she could freely express
her fears and concerns began to
put her mind at ease. The advice
she received from her therapist
also reassured her that things
would soon improve.
It wasn’t long before Katherine
realized that Family Centers
could also help jump start her job
search. Unsure of the career path
she wanted to pursue, Katherine
8 FAMILY CENTERS 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
enrolled in the Reaching
Independence Through
Employment (RITE)
program. In addition
to learning how to
write a resume,
Katherine underwent
aptitude testing and
discovered hidden
professional skills
that could open
doors she never
knew existed.
Shortly after her daughter,
Gabriella, was born, Katherine
was introduced to the Nurturing
Families Network. Raising a baby
on her own proved to be more
demanding than anticipated,
and Katherine was beginning
to question her abilities and
strategies as a first time mother.
With the help of her Nurturing
Families home visitor, Katherine
learned valuable parenting tips
and how to encourage Gabriella’s
development. Her home visitor
also reassured Katherine that
she didn’t have to give up on her
career goals now that she was
a mother.
Katherine continued to lean on
Nurturing Families for the next
four years as Gabriella grew
through the toddler years. Having
a support system that she could
always turn to was so important
to Katherine – especially during
the trying times that many single
parents face. With the help of
her home visitor and the lessons
she learned in therapy, Katherine
became more confident in her
role as a parent and learned how
to handle adversity in stride.
Today, Katherine is a medical
billing and coding specialist
and is working toward a college
degree. Meanwhile, Gabriella is
a happy, talkative and creative
little girl who just entered
kindergarten. “I’m a better
me because of Family Centers,”
Katherine said. “They were there
when I needed help the most
and stayed with me as I became
a more independent person.
The change I see in myself
is amazing!”
Our Volunteers…
The School Readiness Program
has been such a help to my
family. Knowing that Bernardo
is gaining the skills he needs
to succeed in school while I’m
working gives me peace of
mind. The teachers are also very
supportive and go the extra
mile. It’s like being a part of a
big family.
—GISLAINY PREIRA
School Readiness Program Parent
Helen and Edward have been with the Early Care
and Education program since they were infants.
The program’s curriculum, along with the staff’s
caring nature, has significantly helped develop the
cognitive and social skills necessary to succeed in
elementary school.
— LUCY VON BRACHEL AND MICHAEL PUSCAR
Early Care and Education Program Parents
When my mom got sick, I took on the role of my
family’s primary caregiver. The School Based Health
Center helped me manage the stress and find a balance
so that I can be the best I can be for my family.
— WENDY MARROQUIN
School Based Health Center Client
I was scared, alone and unsure I’d be
a good mother. But the Young Parents
Program showed me that I can be there
for my boys and follow my dreams of
being a therapist one day.
— LESLY SANDOVAL
Young Parents Program Participant
Thanks to the Head Start program, Sophia
has grown so much. When she started,
she couldn’t speak English at all. Now,
she speaks beautifully. She has come so
far, and I feel she is absolutely ready for
kindergarten.

swallowed her pride and applied
for Section 8 housing.
Fostering
Independence
F
or as long as she can
remember, Nikki Gwinn
dreamed about becoming a
fashion designer. As a young girl,
she always had her own sense of
style, and would routinely sketch
out design ideas. Once Nikki
earned her degree in Fashion
Design and Business Marketing,
she felt it was only a matter of
time before she made her mark
on the fashion world.
10 FAMILY CENTERS 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Unfortunately, things didn’t work
out as planned. Shortly after
graduating college, Nikki found
out she was pregnant with her
first son, Quasean. Despite her
best efforts to raise a child on
her own and launch the clothing
line she had always dreamed of,
Nikki soon found that her savings
were dwindling and her debt was
mounting. Desperate to keep a
roof over her family’s head, Nikki
For years, Nikki worked a number
of odd jobs just to make ends
meet. Things became even more
complicated when her second
son, Tyrone, was born in 2004.
Emotionally stressed and burned
out, Nikki decided it was time to
follow her dream of working in
the fashion industry. So, she and
her boys left their native Windsor
to start a new life in Stamford.
While Nikki was excited to live
within close proximity of a
fashion epicenter like New York,
she didn’t count on the cost of
living to be so high. She was
able to secure another Section 8
apartment, but the rising costs
of other living expenses left her
finances in a tailspin. To make
matters worse, Nikki was having
a difficult time finding a job in
her new city. With no family
nearby to lean on, she turned to
the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS)
Program for help.
Nikki’s FSS counselor immediately
outlined a plan to help get her
finances in order. Through
careful financial planning
and credit rebuilding tactics,
Nikki was able to pay off debt
and stand on stable ground
for the first time in years. Nikki
also developed a budget to
ensure that her kids would
have the opportunity to attend
college. Through the help of the
Reaching Independence Through
Employment (RITE) program,
Nikki began putting together the
pieces needed to form a nonprofit
organization that merged her
interest in helping underprivileged
kids and her passion for fashion.
Last year, Nikki formally started
the Beyond Kids Foundation –
an afterschool program for kids
interested in exploring a career in
fashion. Under Nikki’s guidance,
the program provides kids with
design instruction and culminates
with a fashion show. The program
was so well received by the
community that she was awarded
a contract from the local YMCA to
offer the program this upcoming
school year.
“It’s amazing how far I’ve come
in such a short time,” Nikki said.
“Family Centers gave me the
confidence I needed to follow
my dreams. I’m still a work in
progress, but I feel like I’m finally
heading in the right direction.”

Families
in Crisis
I
n many regards, the Aslam
family had a life most people
dream of. A native of Pakistan,
Feroze worked hard to make
a life for himself in the United
States. After a long career at
Pitney Bowes, Feroze and his
wife, Pattie, struck out on their
own and opened a liquor store
in Stamford. While they didn’t
consider themselves to be
“wealthy” people, Feroze and
Pattie did their best to provide
for their two daughters, Sarah
and Lauren.
Almost five years ago, Pattie
began to notice some changes
in her normally-upbeat and
energetic husband. He tired
easily and began to forget things.
In fact, the day of Sarah’s first
Holy Communion, Feroze was so
fatigued that he could not get
out of bed. The next day, he was
told he had brain cancer. Feroze’s
diagnosis was difficult, especially
since Sarah and Lauren were
so young. Feroze tried to stay
positive, though, and maintained
an active work schedule up until
his death in 2012.
12 FAMILY CENTERS 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
While Feroze’s passing was
a blow to everyone, Sarah
struggled the most. Over the
years, she and Feroze enjoyed
a very close knit fatherdaughter bond. As Sarah
entered her teenage years,
she leaned on Feroze for
advice and guidance. The two
were also rabid New York
Jets fans and made sure they
always watched the games
together. Sensing that Sarah
would benefit from being
around other kids who
have dealt with the loss of
a loved one, a counselor
at her school suggested to
Pattie that the family turn
to The Den for Grieving
Kids for support.
Pattie was initially skeptical, but
after meeting with the program’s
coordinator, she realized The
Den could be just what her
family needed. Rather than being
forced to talk about their feelings
with a counselor, Pattie liked
that Sarah and Lauren could
work through their grief through
planned activities amongst other
kids facing similar circumstances.
Pattie also found the parents’
discussion group to be helpful as
she began to adjust to life as a
single parent.
It’s been almost two years since
Feroze’s death. While Pattie,
Sarah and Lauren say they
miss him incredibly and think
about him every day, the cloud
associated with his passing is
beginning to lift. “We weren’t
looking for a place like The
Den, but we’re so thankful the
program fell into our laps,” said
Pattie. “It’s so amazing that a
group of total strangers can be
so welcoming and understand
where we’re coming from. Losing
Feroze was very hard, but The
Den showed us that we’re never
really alone.”
Our Volunteers (Continued)
“Our lives really fell apart when my wife was
diagnosed with cancer. The Center for HOPE gave
my kids a place where they can share their feelings
about their mother’s illness. When she died nine
months later, the program helped them each grieve
in their own way. For me, coming to the Center for
HOPE helped validate that the many feelings and
emotions I was experiencing were okay.”
— DAVID KNESTRICK, Center for HOPE Client
“Losing my baby after 19 days was devastating. For a long time, I just felt out
of sorts. While my friends and family tried everything they could to snap me
out of this sadness, I knew I was depressed and needed help. Counseling at
Family Centers gave me a place where I could freely share every aspect of
my life in a non-judgmental atmosphere. It was through this support that I
found the strength to try and become a mother again.”
— ARTESHA NEWTON, Counseling & Mental Health Program Client
“We’re very fortunate to have an experienced
and well-trained school crisis team able to
meet the needs of our students, parents and
faculty in the event of a crisis. But even the
best teams could use some help from time
to time – especially given the trauma that
our community has experienced over the last
several years. It’s crucial to have a community
resource like Family Centers’ Trauma
Response Team to provide our staff with the
outside perspective and expertise to review
and reflect on our procedures to help us to
prepare for future events.”
— RALPH MAYO
Principal, Eastern Middle School
“In addition to giving me the resources I
needed to get my health under control
and find stable housing, Stamford CARES
showed me that I can follow my dreams.
I’m now pursuing a degree in medical
administration, and I’ve become a local and
national advocate to make the road easier
to travel for others living with HIV.”
— A. GORDON BATISTE, Stamford CARES Client
“Having my children taken away from me was
heartbreaking. But Reconnecting Families was with
me every step of the way to help bring Kyle and
Yismel home and put our family back together.”
— SERGELINE LHERISSON

In 2011, Brad Barber, Executive
Director and Complex Manager
of Morgan Stanley Wealth
Management in Greenwich,
wanted his office to be more
involved in the education of
the town’s youth – particularly
those from low-income families.
Knowing that Family Centers
offered Head Start, School
Readiness and preschool
programs to many families in
need, Brad and Morgan Stanley
Financial Advisor Christian
Templeman asked how they
could help.

Engagemen
Our Volunteers
A
t many companies, it’s
standard practice to
encourage employees to
give back to their communities
through volunteerism and
philanthropy. Efforts like these
are instrumental in boosting
workplace morale and help
position a company as a good
community partner. What’s rare
is when an organization puts
community service and its bottom
line on a level playing field.
14 FAMILY CENTERS 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Morgan Stanley has a
longstanding commitment to
making a positive social impact,
both globally and in the many
towns and cities it serves across
the U.S. In addition to the firm’s
many sanctioned community
engagement projects held
throughout the year, each
Morgan Stanley branch is given
the freedom to plan community
enrichment events on a more
local scale.
That spring, Brad, Chris and
a team of 25 Morgan Stanley
employees pitched in to
help ensure the Head Start
Preschool’s graduation ceremony
went smoothly. The kids’
smiling faces left an undeniable
impression on the group,
and left them wanting more.
Later that fall, Morgan Stanley
hosted a Halloween event for
the children of the Arch Street
Preschool. Almost 45 Morgan
Stanley employees dressed
in costume for the event, and
handed out goodies as nearly 60
preschoolers paraded through
the office.
Since that first year,
Morgan Stanley’s
investment in Family
Centers has grown
exponentially. Its
Halloween celebration
gets bigger and bigger
each year, while the
firm has provided a catered
lunch, gifts and an ice cream
truck for Head Start graduates
and their families to enjoy. The
group has also assembled full
Thanksgiving baskets for some
of Family Centers’ neediest
families.
While Family Centers
has become its charity of
choice, Morgan Stanley’s
Greenwich office has lent a
hand to numerous other local
organizations over the years.
Whether they’re clearing more
than 65 tons of debris from Mill
River Park in Stamford, stocking
food pantries or mentoring kids
at local schools, Morgan Stanley’s
employees have truly adopted a
culture of giving.
“Our team gets so much out
of our relationship with Family
Centers,” Brad said. “Being able
to make a difference in the lives
of local kids is so satisfying.”
“Our staff has become a group
that’s hard wired to help,” adds
Chris. “With each event we do
with Family Centers, more and
more employees participate. It’s
becoming part of our culture.”

Family Champion Award
Our Volunteers (Continued)
Arlene Tahmin
“Thanks to Arlene’s passion for community service, Family Centers has enjoyed a
longstanding relationship with UBS that has impacted the lives of so many clients.
Whether they’re serving food at a Friendly Connections luncheon, collecting
holiday gifts for families in need or overhauling the grounds at one of our locations,
Arlene and her team of UBS volunteers are always willing to help.”

Outstanding Volunteerism Award
David Van Dyke
“Upon joining the Board of Directors, some members like to ease into the
role. David jumped in with both feet. Shortly after helping to facilitate
the merger with HealthCare Connection in 2008, David fully immersed
himself in the Family Centers Board by becoming Chairman of the
Bright Beginnings Committee. David’s strategic contributions and
advocacy work in the community has helped make Family Centers the
trusted resource it is today.”
