A Word from our President
Dear Friends,
Nathaniel Mota, a senior at Verbum Dei, was killed by a hit and run car on a Friday
in September. Needless to say, this is a devastating loss for the Mota family, our senior
class, and the Verbum Dei community.
We had a prayer service on the Sunday after Nathaniel’s death. Intended for our faculty, staff, our seniors and other students who could come, our multipurpose room was
filled also with many friends of the Mota family. Nathaniel’s mother and father and
his brother Andrew, a Verb sophomore, and many in the extended Mota family were
present with us.
Nathaniel Mota
9/18/96 - 9/13/13
When the prayer service was over each senior spent a moment with Nathaniel’s mom
and dad and his brother. It was a grace to see our young men so careful and
compassionate with Nathaniel’s family. Afterwards the seniors went to Nathaniel’s locker and cried for a while, said
the Lord’s Prayer, and invoked St. Ignatius to pray for them. In the quiet, bunched together, hugging and holding
on to each other, they shouted one wonderfully loud “Nathaniel.” It was a sacred moment – we adults stood back,
watched and listened, and learned from our seniors about love and grief and brotherhood.
The next day, we held another prayer service this time for the whole student body, faculty and staff. Again, Mr. and
Mrs. Mota and Andrew were with us – and they stayed after with the senior class as the seniors spoke about Nathaniel.
Personal counselors from Loyola High School joined our own wonderful counselors to provide ears and advice for
those among the student body and the faculty/staff who needed someone to talk with. Many students, not just the
seniors, took advantage of the chance to talk with a counselor or sit quietly in the chapel.
Everyone on campus was attentive to one another in the days that followed. The leadership shown by Dr. Dan
O’Connell, Mrs. Cristina Cuellar-Villanueva and our other administrators was crucial in creating a healthy environment for our students to grieve, talk, and wonder about life and death issues. As difficult as Nathaniel’s death is, the
Verb community showed its best self.
We carry Nathaniel with us each day. And we rely on your continued prayers for the Verbum Dei community, most
especially our seniors.
Gratefully,
William Muller, S.J.
President
A Word from our Board Chair
My Dear Friends of the Verb,
As Chairman of the Verbum Dei Advisory Board, it is my sincere pleasure to report the wonderful year we had in 2012/2013
school year with our education programs, admissions, jobs for our students, and in capital improvements.
It is also with some sadness that I tell you this is Fr. William Muller’s final year as president at Verbum Dei High School. I have
worked with Fr. Muller for nearly six years, and it is through his tireless hard work and dedication to the Verb that we owe much
of our success! Thank you Bill and much success in your next mission!
The Jesuit Provincial has appointed, and Archbishop Gomez has approved, Fr. Michael Mandala, S.J., as the next president of
Verbum Dei. Fr. Mandala will work with Fr. Muller this year and take over the president’s position in June 2014. Fr. Mandala has
been the Director of Community Relations at Verbum Dei the past year and a half, so he knows the school and the community
well. Some years ago he was the pastor of Christ the King Church in San Diego and most recently before coming to the Verb; he
was the pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood. He is fluent in Spanish and has an MBA from the Kellogg School –
two qualifications he brings that will serve the school community well.
Fr. Muller looks forward to this year’s many activities and will continue to rely on your prayers and your help.
As always, the challenges we face as a Board and as a Community is sustainable growth and excellence of education in these difficult economic times. It is through your continued friendship, generosity and hard work that we will continue to succeed.
Therefore, I am pleased to share with you a few of the highpoints from the past year:
1. The incoming class of new students is the largest we have had in the past 11 years. With 116 freshman and 10 transfer students,
our enrollment is now up to 330 students. We are still short of our 400 student goal, but with our rate of growth, we expect to be
there by 2015.
2. CEDAR Foundation International continues to be a great supporter and partner with Verbum Dei! They have agreed to extend
their support of $250,000 per year for financial aid and scholarships.
3. Growth in internships for our students from our Corporate Partners went from 70, in 2011/2012, to 76, in 2012/2013. New
partners who came aboard were Houlihan & Lokey, Clune Construction, Fox Rothschild, Grant Thornton, KPMG, and Wedgewood Realty.
4. The Adopt-A-Student Program is doing quite well. Through the program, lucky participants adopt a student and bridge the
funding gap between the actual cost of education and actual funding; $4,000 to $5,750 per student. Giving levels begin at
$1,000.00 up to $10,000.00. The adopted students and their sponsors get to know each other and sponsors see their aid actually
reap benefits. Last year we raised $101,325.
5. With the support of the John and Dorothy Shea Foundation, we launched into and completed phase two of our 2008 renovation campaign which has renovated the 100 and 200 wing classrooms and parts of the 400 wing. Next year, we will enter into
phase three of the project renovating the weight room, locker rooms, and showers in the Athletic Facility.
These are only a few bright moments for the year, and with your ongoing support, the Verb will remain the place where dreams
come true. I thank you all again and look forward to seeing you on campus this year.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Omer Simeon

The Verb is growing! Over the past four years, student enrollment has grown by 25%. This year we set a record with 111
freshmen becoming Verbum Dei Eagles. This growth puts us on target to reach our capacity of 400 students by the 2015-2016
school year. What a blessing to be able to provide a rigorous college prep Catholic and Jesuit education to 400 deserving young
men from Watts and the surrounding community—young men who are just looking for the opportunity of attaining a brighter
future and are willing to work for it.
I applaud the extraordinary efforts of our Outreach and Marketing team, but I think the real reason for our growth is our proven
track record of success. We provide a loving, nurturing environment with dedicated and passionate teachers who push their
students to achieve their God-given potential. And for the past six years, 100% of our graduating seniors have been accepted to
college.

Students are learning that the set of 10 characteristics they are evaluated on at their respective Corporate Work Study Program
(CWSP) placements translates beyond the office setting. CWSP offers students hands-on experience and prepares them to carry
out basic entry level skills in an office setting. More importantly, students are excelling at the soft skills that are important for
success at work, the classroom and in life. Students are making connections between work and the classroom via their ability to
demonstrate reliability in the work they complete, willingness to learn new material and tasks, and the judgment to make a
decision that will reflect positively on them and the choices they make. Verbum Dei students are exceeding expectations in 7 of
the 10 characteristics above, and as a school, the average overall student performance rating we received at year-end 2012-2013
is 4.14 out of 5. Our accomplishments are attainable due to the Corporate Work Study team’s dedication to student success and
our Corporate Partners’ commitment to the development of our young men.

OUR MISSION:
Verbum Dei is a Catholic, Jesuit, college and career preparatory, complemented by our corporate internship program,
