An unwritten rule for freshmen legislators, no matter the
party, is to keep your eyes and
ears open, your mouth closed. In
other words, defer to leadership
until you learn your way. It’s a
time-honored tradition observed
by both parties. Apparently, though,
no one told then freshman Sen.
Chris Romer as the 2007 session
opened.
At one of his party’s first news
conferences, instead of dutifully
remaining in the chorus, Romer
maneuvered to the microphone
and, touting his own background
in finance, explained what he
thought leadership had not
explained. He made his point. He
also got his leadership’s attention.
Because of the Democrats’ majority in the Senate and, perhaps
in its own way of tweaking him,
his party’s bosses sat him on the
Republican side of the aisle for
the session.
“He can be a bull in a china shop
sometimes,” said friend and former legislative colleague Brandon
Shaffer, now Senate Democratic

Finding the right balance in providing
information to readers in both a printed
publication and website is not always an
easy feat.
A news source’s readership may be
inclined to the traditional printed version,
common at the breakfast table next to the
freshly brewed coffee. Others, more new
media oriented, might find greater appreciation for an online edition, accessible through
a click of a mouse.
For La Voz Bilingüe finding that right
balance with its readers in mind has always
been key. In late April La Voz Bilingüe
launched its revamped website (www.lavozcolorado.com) providing the same news content available in the printed edition while
also carrying extras available only online.
Visitors can easily see at first glance the
pleasing layout of the homepage with its traditional La Voz
Bilingüe red hue in the background and its easy to navigate
sections. The panels on the left hand side presents visitors
with accessibility to different areas of the website. No matter
what you would prefer to read (La Vida Latina, Sports and
even Classifieds) there is something here for everyone.
Among the extras that visitor’s can take advantage
of is the poll, not available in the printed edition. Tell us

District 8 ice cream social
The City Park Alliance announced the annual County
Fair at City Park & the District 8 Old Fashioned Ice Cream
Social honoring Carla Madison, this district’s former City
Council Member who passed away in April. This turn-ofthe-century fair celebrating the city’s most beautiful park
in its historic glory was one of Councilwoman Madison’s
favorite events and she spearheaded it a few years ago.
City Park Alliance combined its annual open house with
Councilwoman Madison last year and plans to carry on the
tradition now that she has passed.
Participants will see the Denver Municipal Big Band
play to the fountain show, entertainment and craft stations
will provide fun for entire families, food vendors will be on
hand, and there will be free ice cream available for all who
attend. Neighbors and guests are encouraged to wear period

Be bear aware
The Colorado Division of Wildlife reminds campers to
be “bear aware” when enjoying the outdoors.
Here are a few tips for campers in bear country: Keep a
clean site and clean up thoroughly after every meal; after grilling, allow the fire to completely burn food scraps and grease
off the grill. Do not eat in your tent or keep food or items that
smell of food in your tent; store unused food and garbage in
secure containers out of the reach of bears and away from
your sleeping area; secure pet food as you would human food.
Don’t leave food that would attract birds or any wildlife in
campgrounds. If you see others in the campground feeding
wildlife, contact the campground host. If you see a bear in a
campground, report it to the local DOW office as soon as possible. If you come in close contact with a bear, talk to it firmly
and make yourself look as large as possible. Back away slowly,
but do not run. Teach children and others who might be unfamiliar with bears about bear safety. For more information visit

Race to the Top
Gov. John Hickenlooper and Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia applauded the U.S. Department of Education’s announcement that
Colorado is among nine states able to apply for the third
round of Race to the Top funds.
As one of nine states, Colorado can apply for $10 to
$50 million by updating the state’s last application submitted in June 2010. Grants will be awarded for programs in
early childhood education and the K-12 public education
system. All updated grant applications will be due to the U.S.
Department of Education in the fall.
The U.S. Secretary of Education also announced a new and
separate $500 million state-level grant competition, the Race to
the Top-Early Learning Challenge. This grant will reward states
that create comprehensive plans to transform early learning
systems and is on is open to all states, including Colorado.
Do at the Zoo
Denver Zoo’s largest fundraiser, Do At The Zoo is
back. This year, guests can learn and support its efforts
to build the 10-acre, Asian Tropics exhibit. Do At The
Zoo kicks off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 16. Visit

Leaders unite on Gadhafi: At the
G8 summit held in France, world leaders
expressed their belief that Col. Moammar
Gadhafi should step down from power.
Among the world leaders who have joined
in the call is Russia who has been critical
of NATO’s presence in the African country.

Release: North Korea will release
Eddie Jun Young-su an American citizen.
It was reported that Jun was being held for
missionary work, an illegal activity in the
atheist country.
In Europe
G8 gathers: World leaders gathered
in Deauville, France for the G8 summit
where they discussed turmoil in the Middle
East such as NATO’s involvement in Libya
and the G8’s promise to provide aid to the
Egyptian and Tunisian governments.
Obama tours Europe: President
Barack Obama made a six-day European
tour visiting the UK, attending the G8 summit in France and meeting with Polish
President Bronislaw Komorowski.
Active volcano: The Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland erupted over a week ago and
interrupted flights in Europe due to the ash.
Latin America
Peruvian elections: Keiko Fujimori,
daughter of Peru’s former President Alberto
Fujimori is in a tight race against former
military officer Ollanta Humala to become
Peru’s next president. The election will take
place on June 5.
Brotherly rift: Fabricio Correa, brother of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa
said that he is considering running for
president in the 2013 election. He would be
running against his brother.

Path of destruction: One hundred
and forty two people have been killed by the
tornado that touched Joplin, MO. Several tornadoes have also sprung along the Midwest
leaving a path of destruction along the way.
TV Goodbye, finale: TV host and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey aired her final
show last Wednesday, May 25. It was reported that a total of more than 13 million viewers watched the episode. The American audience has crowned Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide
receiver Hines Ward the new “Dancing with
the Stars” champion and Scotty McCreery
the season 10 “American Idol” winner.
In the Middle East
Convoy targeted: A United Nations
convoy was targeted with a bomb last Friday
in Lebanon. Six Italian peacemakers were
injured in the attack.
Clinton in Pakistan: Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton made a trip to Pakistan
last week. The visit was made in order
to help ease diplomatic ties between the
United States and Pakistan since Osama
Bin Laden’s death.

Denver youth seek summer work
When summer begins, students
walk off of their school grounds feeling fresh and ready to face anything.
Many are happy their book time is over
for a few months, but many know they
will still need something to keep them
occupied and on track in the summer.
Many know they will need to make
money to either support their family or
plan for their future. With several programs in Denver designed to develop

youth holistically and find meaningful employment, Colorado youth can
thrive during their summer months.
SERVICIOS DE LA RAZA is one organization that has
been providing youth services for over 30 years now. They
have implemented a program called YES, Youth Experiencing
Success. The program currently targets young adults ages
16-21 looking for direction in their careers. To qualify one
must meet one of the criteria: offender, pregnant/ parenting,
homeless or foster, disabled, high school drop-out, basic
skills deficient and you must fall under WIA income guidelines. YES participants can expect intensive job training, college admissions guidance and support receiving necessities
like transportation, GED classes and professional clothing. If
you are a youth that would be a good fit for the YES program

The counties of Colorado are another good source when
looking for youth employment opportunities. Simply check
the website from the county you live in and see what kind of
services they can offer to you.

with youth and personalize a plan based off of their individual
needs. Whether it is career planning, immediate job search or
education, Adworks is there. The Youth Resource Center is a
drop in facility with computer access, fax and copy machines,
phones and tons of reference materials and postings for
young job seekers. A youth counselor is specifically present
to help with resumes or interview preparation. The job board
offers companies hiring anywhere from customer service to
the hotel restaurant industry to being a youth instructor at

It is still early into the MLB season to crown, count teams out or even
predict playoff contenders. However,
the Rockies who were in the MLB
spotlight early in the season for their
superb road record have fallen down
the rankings, and fallen fast.
The Colorado Rockies are just
one game away from falling into the
number three spot of the NL West
after sitting above all early in the

season. The Rockies have lost nine
of their last eleven and have only chalked up eight wins for
the month of May. Eight wins may seem okay but the Rockies
had 29 games played for the month of May. With that said,
the Rockslide is apparent and hard to understand for many
of the purple and black trustworthy.
Colorado faces the Dodgers for game three of their
three-game series on Wednesday in L.A. Colorado is up
against the NL West in the weeks to come facing the Giants,
Padres and Dodgers again. The Rockies have gone from first
in the division to second, losing number one to the Giants,
then lost the number two spot to Arizona and are one game
from dropping to number three to L.A.
Colorado will face two divisional opponents on the road
in San Francisco and San Diego before returning home to
host the L.A. Dodgers at Coors Field. Colorado’s record was
once the best in MLB but it is becoming a faint memory
quickly.
Game time for game three with the Dodgers is 8:10 p.m.

In other sports: NFL owners are not any closer to coming to
an agreement with the players and the idea of an NFL lockout is
becoming more and more likely as August approaches. The NFL
may feel the sting of their stalemate with players as faithful
fans become less tolerant of the disagreement.
