There may be areas in healthcare that have shown more dramatic advances in modern history, but
few can match that of organ transplants. In just the last twenty years
more than 500,000 Americans have
gotten new organs. Unfortunately,
the lack of people willing to register as organ donors, particularly
minorities, has left untold numbers struggling with a compromised quality of life, or worse.
In 1905, Czech ophthalmologist
Eduard Konrad Zirm conducted the
first successful transplant procedure
when he successfully implanted corneas into the eyes of a man blinded
in a mining incident. Since then,
kidneys, pancreas, liver, heart and
lung transplants have become commonplace. In the last decade, hand
and face transplants have also been
performed. In 2008, the first baby
from a transplanted ovary was born.

A Q&A with Congresswoman Diana DeGette
Congresswoman DeGette addresses community
concerns, re-election

La Voz sat down with Colorado’s 1st Congressional
District U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette at her offices in Denver
recently. We asked her about her work in Washington D.C.
and how Latinos are impacted by policy decisions. DeGette
has served in the U.S. Congress since 1997 and faces reelection this year against Republican Danny Stroud.
You’ve discussed your support for immigration
reform and the Dream Act. What do you think it will
take to actually see the passage of comprehensive
immigration reform?
I’ve been a co-sponsor of the Dream Act for many years
and supportive of comprehensive immigration reform. In
the last sessions of Congress I was really happy because we
were able to pass the Dream Act through the House. One of
my jobs is Chief Deputy Whip for the Democrats. So I was
actually one of the people in charge of counting the votes
and making sure we had the votes to pass the bill and it
was just a wonderful moment when it passed, but it didn’t
pass in the Senate. So we’ve reintroduced the bill this session of Congress. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that [John]
Boehner, the new Speaker of the House, intends to bring
the bill up. I’ve actually been talking with the leaders of the
Congressional Hispanic Caucus and also with Congressman
Luis Gutierrez from the Chicago area about how we can pass
not just the Dream Act, but also immigration reform.
In serving the Latino Community, what would you
consider has been your greatest effort/ accomplishment
as a member of Congress? What is the benefit to the
Latino community?
One of the issues that I’ve been really working on this
current congressional session this year has been the issue
of jobs because obviously we’ve had a high unemployment

rate. Unemployment has hit the Latino community harder
than the rest of the community.
DeGette pointed to figures showing that Latinos represent
an 11.6 percent unemployment rate compared to an 8.3 percent unemployment rate for the general public. She said that
through her active involvement in community meetings, she
hopes to help small Latino-owned business obtain the financial assistance they need.
Heated debates surround women’s health particularly as it relates to birth control. Why do you think the
debate has become so intensified?
I think that women take for granted that they should be
given the ability to plan their families. This whole debate
came around because the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) determined on a scientific basis that birth control
is core women’s health not just for planning pregnancies,
but also for treating diseases like ovarian cancer and other
diseases. So they said it’s part of core women’s health so it
should be covered by all insurance plans.
I think it became such a hot button issue because most
American women assumed that things like birth control
would be part of their health care package and they were
shocked when they heard people didn’t want to include it.
Why should you be re-elected?
Over the last 16 years I’ve worked hard to represent the
voters of the 1st Congressional District. It’s a great district
to represent because it’s very diverse both racially and economically. What I try to take is a strong sense of my Western
values [to Washington]. I believe in fiscal responsibility, but
I also believe we need to educate our children. We need to
take care of our seniors and affirm the commitment we’ve
made to our seniors. We need to have an economy that
grows by innovation so we need to have strong research
programs at the NIH and at the research labs in Colorado
and other places. And we just need to have fiscal sanity. At
the same time we need to have a strong safety net.

Yo he sido copatrocinadora del Dream Act por muchos
años y apoyo la reforma inmigratoria comprensiva. En las
últimas sesiones del Congreso yo estaba muy contenta
porque pudimos pasar el Dream Act en la Casa. Uno de mis
trabajos es Jefe del Grupo Parlamentario de los demócratas. Y entonces yo era una de las personas que estaban a
cargo de contar los votos, y asegurar que teníamos los votos
necesarios para pasar el decreto y fue un momento brillante
cuando pasó, pero no pasó en el senado. Por eso nosotros
hemos presentado la propuesta en esta sesión del Congreso.
Desafortunadamente, yo no creo que [John] Boehner, el
nuevo vocero de la Casa, trate de traer adelante el decreto.
Yo he estado hablando con los líderes del Grupo Congresista
Hispano y también con el congresista Luis Gutiérrez del área
de Chicago sobre cómo podríamos pasar no solamente el
Dream Act, sino también la reforma inmigratoria.
Al servir a la comunidad latina, ¿qué consideraría
que ha sido su mejor esfuerzo/su logro como miembro
del Congreso? ¿Cuál es el beneficio de la comunidad
latina?
Uno de los problemas en los cuales yo he estado trabajando en la sesión actual del congreso ha sido el problema del
trabajo porque obviamente nosotros tenemos un índice de
desempleo muy alto. El desempleo ha atacado a la comunidad
latina con mucha más fuerza que al resto de la comunidad.
DeGette indicó cifras que muestran que los latinos tienen
una tasa de desempleo del 11,6 por ciento que se compara mal
con el 8,3 por ciento de desempleo para el público en general.
Ella dijo que por medio de su activa participación en mítines
de la comunidad, ella espera ayudar a negocios latinos pequeños para que obtengan la ayuda financiera que necesitan.
Debate muy acalorado se encuentran en los problemas de salud de la mujer especialmente en lo que se
refiere al control de la natalidad. ¿Por qué cree usted
que el debate se ha intensificado ahora?
Yo creo que las mujeres aceptan a ciegas que ellas
deben tener la habilidad de planear sus familias. Este debate
completo salió debido a que el National Institutes of Health
(NIH por sus siglas en inglés) determine con bases científicas que el control de la natalidad es fundamental para la
salud de la mujer, no solamente en la planeación de quedar
en cinta, sino también para tratar enfermedades como el
cáncer ovárico y otras enfermedades. Por eso dijeron que es
parte del núcleo de la salud femenina y deben ser cubiertas
por los planes de seguro.
Yo creo que se convirtió en un problema acalorado por
que la mayoría de las mujeres Americanas asumían que
cosas como el control de la natalidad deben ser parte de su
paquete de salud y se abismaron cuando oyeron que la gente
no quería incluirlo.
¿Por qué debe ser reelegida?
En los últimos 16 años, yo he trabajado duro para representar a los votantes del Primer Distrito del Congreso. Es un
gran distrito para representar porque es muy diverso racial
y económicamente. Lo que trato de conseguir es un fuerte
sentido de mis valores del oeste [en Washington]. Yo creo
en la responsabilidad fiscal, pero también creo que tenemos
que educar a nuestros hijos. Nosotros tenemos que cuidar
a nuestros ancianos y afirmar el compromiso que tenemos
con nuestros ancianos. Nosotros necesitamos tener una
economía que crece con la innovación y por eso necesitamos grandes programas investigativos en el NIH y en los
laboratorios de investigación en Colorado y otros lugares. Y
solamente necesitamos una cordura fiscal. Al mismo tiempo
tenemos que tener un fuerte sentido la de seguridad.

summer camp program, “Animales.” Students will have the
opportunity to discover the wild world of animals through
this multidisciplinary summer arts camp.
For three consecutive weeks, participants will immerse
themselves in visual arts, dance, music and theater classes
to better understand the bond between animals, humans
and the environment. Each class is conducted by a trained
teacher who is committed to advancing the students’ understanding of animals through arts integration techniques and

DSF to award $5 million next year
As the April 1 deadline approaches for Denver
Scholarship Foundation (DSF) scholarships, high school
seniors are working with counselors and advisors to complete and submit their application as well as the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Since its launch in 2007, DSF has awarded more than
$13.3 million in scholarships to 2,638 DPS graduates, and
it plans to award another $5 million to graduates next
year alone. As of fall 2011, 80 percent of all DSF Scholars
are either still enrolled in college or have completed their
program. Thousands of students receive support for college
enrollment, FAFSA and college scholarship applications via
Future Centers, which are located in DPS high schools and
operated by the Denver Scholarship Foundation. Future
Centers have served 25,000 DPS students since 2007, inspiring and assisting them on their journey toward college.
About 78 percent of DSF scholars will be among the first
generation in their family to graduate from college. The
need-based DSF Scholarships are available to qualifying
students who have attended a DPS high school for four years.
Community Advisory Council
Denver Parks and Recreation’s Central Park Recreation
Center is now accepting applications for their Community
Advisory Council through April 30.
Advisory Council members act as advocates within the
community and work with staff to support programs and
operations at the recreation center. A member will live in a
neighborhood close to the recreation center including but
not limited to Montbello, Northeast Park Hill, North Park Hill,
South Park Hill, East Colfax or Stapleton or attend the recreation center. They will commit to attending monthly meetings
at the recreation center as well as occasional special events
and meetings as needed. Memberships terms expire annually
and can be renewed at the discretion of the center supervisor.

Colorado’s Governor
Gov. John Hickenlooper announced that the Colorado
Division of Motor Vehicles has a new computerized checkin system designed to cut wait times for Coloradans at
driver license offices. Wait Less lets residents schedule
appointments on the Internet. Once they arrive at the
DMV office, there will be a check-in kiosk station that
reduces lines and allows multiple customers to check-in.
The DMV has introduced Wait Less at its Lakewood office
at 1881 Pierce St. By the end of 2012, DMV plans to roll out
the service to 11 other offices in Aurora, Boulder, Colorado
Springs, Denver North East, Fort Collins, Golden, Greeley,
Littleton, Longmont, Northglenn and Parker.

first look at new Asian bull elephants Groucho and Bodhi.
Guests also got the chance to learn about the exhibit’s sustainability methods, including gasification technology.
Opening to the public June 1, Toyota Elephant Passage’s
expansive complex will allow visitors to explore and discover
the rich history of animals in Asian culture, their complicated relationship with humans and the efforts Denver Zoo
and its colleagues undertake to protect their future. Guests
will be immersed in Asian wildlife and culture through
multi-sensory experiences providing greater awareness
and understanding of the role we all must play in protecting

Earthquake strikes Japan: A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan last
Tuesday. No structural damages or injuries
were reported. Japan commemorated the
one-year anniversary of the 2011 earthquake
that devastated the island nation on March 11.
In Europe
Children die on trip: Twenty-eight
people died during a ski trip to Switzerland
last week. The accident occurred when passengers were returning from the ski trip in
Western Switzerland to Belgium when the
bus struck a wall in a tunnel. Of those dead,
22 were children and six were adults. The
remaining 24 passengers, who were children, were also injured.
Hunt for a killer: French police are
on high alert after several murders by an
unidentified gunman ridding a scooter. A
gunman targeted the Jewish school Ozar
Hatorah in Toulouse where he killed a teacher and three children in front of the school.
A teenager also resulted injured because of
the incident. Authorities are investigating if
the gunman is associated with the murder of
three soldiers last week.
In Latin America
Pope visits Mexico: Pope Benedict XVI
will visit Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico over the
weekend and then travel to Cuba marking
the first Spanish-speaking Latin American
tour for the pope. The Knights Templar cartel
announced in several banners hung across
Guanajuato that it would not engage in violence during the papal visit. Authorities in
Cuba reported that several activist supporting
the Ladies in White, wives and relatives of
imprisoned dissidents, were detained prior to
a march, held recurrently on Sundays.
Honduran first lady seeks high
office: Former Honduran first lady Xiomara
Castro will run for president in next year’s
presidential elections. Former president and
husband of Xiomara Castor, Manuel Zelaya
was ousted from the country in 2009 when
he tried to extend his presidential term.

Language politics in Florida and Puerto Rico

also won Florida
that was thought to
be his ticket to an
undisputed victory
in Tampa later this
year.

out to not be the case as Rick Santorum
went on a winning streak that dampened
the Romney spirit of inevitability. Newt
Gingrich also did his part by winning in
South Carolina and Georgia.
However, it was Florida and now Puerto
Rico that raises the issue of language in a
rather peculiar way. It reminds me of the
time some four years that we visited Miami
and found that Spanish is the rule in the city
rather than the exception.
From the time we checked out of the
Miami airport to the time we returned to fly
back to North Carolina we spoke no English.
Spanish was spoken even in places like
Señor Frogs along Miami Beach.
Cubans make no bones about being
the language police in Miami. The fact that
their political tradition is mostly Republican
has a lot to do with the lack of criticism others may have about their commitment to the
Spanish language.
This may have also caused Republican
candidates to shy away from the language
issue in Florida in favor of jumping on
Latino immigration, which has little relevance in Florida since Cubans, just like Ellis
Island immigrants, only have to show up to
be legal in the United States. The exclusive
use of Spanish in Miami appears to have
been largely overlooked by the candidates
that want to make English the only language
of importance in America.
On the other hand while in North
Carolina I met Dr. Diane Rodríguez a professor at East Carolina University and an accomplished scholar who has become a Latino
leader in the region. She is Puerto Rican and
is highly respected by the Latino immigrant
community that is mostly Mexican.
Rodríguez tells the story of the time
after making a presentation to a university audience she was asked by one of the
attendees where in Mexico she was from
and if she had papers. It seems that this
is typical of southern states that have antiimmigrant reputations.
Yet when you talk about Puerto Ricans
you cannot really put an immigration tag on
the conversation since they are American
citizens. So you have to find other things
to criticize.
When Santorum chose to make English
a condition for Puerto Rico to join the union,
he went at the basis for the cultural existence of a people who have been Americans
since 1898 and do not need to be reminded
that English is key to success. That is why
English as a second language is a requirement in all of its schools.
Santorum carried the common disease
of ignorance of all things Latino, pitching
a homerun to Romney who only had to
stay away from the language issue to win.
New Mexico, which qualified to be a state
right after the Mexican American War, was
delayed in its admission as a state until
1912 because it was not English speaking
enough.
Don’t you find it curious that Cubans
in Miami who love to flaunt and dominate
with their Spanish do not hear a peep from
those who do not like the Latino language
while it was the first thing that was brought
up when the candidates got to Puerto Rico?
This selective preference of Spanish speakers is a phenomenon that hides a great truth.

ellos son ciudadanos americanos. Y entonces hay que buscar otras cosas para criticar.
Cuando Santorum escogió hacer que el
inglés fuese una condición para que Puerto
Rico se juntara a la unión, él se fue con la
base de la existencia de la cultura de un
pueblo que ha sido Americano desde el año
de 1898 y no tiene necesidad que se les diga
que el inglés es la clave del éxito. Es por esto

Denver remembers Cesar Chavez’s legacy

This month labor leader and civil rights activist Cesar
Chavez would have been 85. He would probably be surprised
at how things have changed even from 1993 the year that he
passed away. But he would be impressed with the energy of
today’s activists who fight for livable wages, health care and
dignity for all workers.
Coloradans remember Chavez on his March 31 birthday
thanks to the efforts of former Colorado State Reps. Frana
Mace and Rob Hernandez who sponsored a bill later signed
by Gov. Bill Owens to create Colorado’s Cesar Chavez state
holiday. It was overdue, but not too late to honor a Hispanic
hero who strived for better labor conditions and human
rights.
In the height of a restless decade Chavez arrived at the
right place and time. In 1962 he and Dolores Huerta founded
what would become the United Farm Workers or UFW. Like
his contemporary activist Martin Luther King. Jr., Chavez
practiced non-violent civil disobedience. Through boycotts,
marches, fasts, picketing and strikes, the UFW eventually
was able to improve working conditions for farm laborers
from California to Florida.
Some fifty years after its founding, the UFW logo –– a
black Aztec Eagle against a deep red background –– still
remains instantly recognizable today. The UFW slogan was
“Viva La Causa” and crowds assembled shouting the now
familiar: ¡Si Se Puede! and ¡Viva la Huelga!
The 1960s and 1970s civil unrest may have faded but
the political protest movement continues for social and eco-
nomic justice from various segments of the political spectrum. As we celebrate his legacy, it’s important to remember
that Chavez also fought for basic health care for workers and
reduction of cancer-causing pesticides, issues that benefit
all Americans.
Huerta, long recognized as a brilliant UFW field organizer, fundraiser and feminist advocate, keeps busy in the
21st century. Although 82 years old this year she remains

degrees from Princeton and Mills College and awards from
women’s groups and the White House.
Guided by his religious beliefs, Chavez arrived during
a turbulent civil rights movement that included a crosssection of religious leaders, ethnic minorities, college students and the working poor. We honor his achievements and
remember his struggle through various events in Denver
including an annual mass and march and various city and
state programs.
The Chicano Humanities and Arts Council (CHAC) will
present a children’s program on Tuesday, March 27, from
2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Byers Branch Library, 675 Santa Fe

8 a.m. at St. Cajetan Catholic Church, 299 S. Raleigh

Pacheco. After that, she gave it little thought. But, in 2004, on
a routine doctor visit, tests results showed an abnormality. A
biopsy later confirmed kidney failure. She needed a transplant.
But, because of her age, doctors told her it might be a long wait
or that she may never get one.
“Every month I went to the doctors my kidneys would
be worse,” said the retired hospital worker. Finally, in 2010,
with no donor organ available, Pacheco went on dialysis,
a thrice-weekly, three to four hour treatment in which a
patient is attached to a machine that performs the duties
their kidneys no longer can.
Despite inconvenience Pacheco made the best of it. She
visited friends, took short trips to New Mexico and tried to keep
a normal routine. “I worked around it,” she says. Then, late
in 2011, the hospital called. A match was found. Within hours,
Pacheco was in surgery at Presbyterian St. Luke Hospital.
She knows little of her donor. Protocol requires confidentiality. “All I know is it’s a 49-year-old male,” Pacheco says. But
despite the mystery, she never forgets his unselfish act of kindness. “I thank him every day and I say a prayer for him — and
for his family.” Two others also benefited from her donor’s
largess. His heart and kidneys also got new owners.
Former Denver resident Donna Suazo is also an organ
recipient. A genetic condition caused deterioration in her
original liver. In January, after four years of waiting, she
received a new one. But while her new organ is working
fine, the toll on her body created a new challenge, which
may soon require a new kidney. For now, it’s dialysis. “It’s
extremely difficult,” says the ebullient Suazo. “But I’m alive!”
“Right now I have fifteen different medications that I’m
on,” she says. She sets her phone alarm to remind her when
it’s time to medicate. “Staying well is my job,” she says —
that and, of course, waiting. “I’m on call all the time,” in case
doctors call telling her they’ve found a match.
Suazo’s condition forced her into retirement from a
career she loved, taking care of and being around animals.
But while that part of her life is gone, perhaps for good,
she takes joy in the family support she has come to lean

on. A number of family members, including her mother and
brother, now live close by in San Diego.
Post-operative life need not always mean being tethered to
a phone. If a patient follows the prescribed medical guidelines
and leads a healthy lifestyle, things can be easy — or, at least,
easily manageable. “Quality of life of an organ transplant can
be pretty close to normal,” says University of Colorado Hospital
Assistant Professor of Medicine Dr. Scott Biggins. “They can be
managed by their primary care physician.”
But while hundreds of transplants are performed each
week, there are still significant bioethical issues being
debated. ‘Organ tourism,’ people traveling abroad to receive
an organ, remains a delicate issue. Also, ‘organ harvesting,’
taking organs from executed inmates continues to be a
charge often leveled against China.
Singapore has banned organ donation altogether to prevent exploiting the “poor and socially disadvantaged” who
are desperate for money but who may also be unable to make
an informed decision. But illegal organ trafficking continues
to thrive despite these issues.
Other questions abound. Should an alcoholic receive
a new liver? Should need be based on wealth or celebrity?
Should people be able to sell their own body parts? A person
only needs a single kidney and only part of the liver need
be taken from a donor. In fiscally challenging times, is the
benefit actually worth the expense? Should a person whose
body rejected one organ get a second?
There is also no uniform agreement on when an organ
can be taken? Is it when the heart and lungs cease to function
or when the brain goes “dark?” State prisoners are another
issue. Should an inmate serving life get a new heart? Should
the state pay? Who is too old to qualify for transplant?
In the not too distant future, a person may also be able to
create their own replacement organs using their own DNA. If
and when that time comes, a new round of debates begins on the
morality of using stem cells. And what about the cloning issue?
“It’s a very contentious and actively debated topic,” says
UCH’s Dr. Biggins. And moral arguments need not ascend to
major organs. Just debating ‘pay vs. volunteer’ blood donors
has, so far, not been resolved. “This line between doing it
out of altruism and doing it out of desire to get compensation is very important.”
With an estimated 5,000 people a year dying while on
waiting lists for organ transplants, it would appear that
there is a genuine need for the majority of these issues to
be solved. But, no matter who may be waiting for resolution

Akaysha Joiner is one remarkable student. She is
ranked first in Rangeview High School’s 2012 graduating class and maintains a remarkable 4.6 GPA. She
has been named to the Academic Honor Roll and is
an AP Scholar. She is a member of the National Honor
Society, DECA, Link Crew and Fellowship of Christian
Athletes. She was a member of the varsity softball team
her freshman and sophomore years and is currently a
member of the varsity tennis team (Lettered). She also

Latin Fest IV: A call to CU/DU alumni

DU and CU Boulder Latino alumni associations hold joint scholarship fundraising event.
The University of Denver Latino Alumni
Association (DULAA) and the CU Boulder
Latino Alumni Association (CUBLAA) come
together again to host Latin Fest IV.
The money raised at the event will go
toward DULAA’s Mentoring Program and
CUBLAA’s Scholarship Fund.
Ellen Alires-Trujillo (CUBLAA representative and undergraduate from CU and JD
from DU) and Andrea Smith (member of
DULAA) became involved after the first
Latin Fest was held. “It was groups of both
boards that talked about how we might get
together and do something for the Latino
community and not compete,” Alires-Trujillo
said about the establishment of the partnership. Lynne Valencia, KUSA-TV and DULAA,
and Armando Payan were some of those
important figures mentioned related to the
creation of this partnership. “The goal was
to support higher education,” Smith shared.
Both Alires-Trujillo and Smith expressed
that their ultimate goal of having this event
and having both school alumni associations
come in concert is to benefit Latino students.
“Creating this community is really about the
students. We really want them to have a successful experience,” Smith said.
“We hope to generate money to help them,”
Alires-Trujillo says, “To help them meet their
goals.” Alires-Trujillo commented that CUBLAA
has awarded over a million dollars in scholarship to Latino students. A feat she said proudly.
So what can people expect? “Good
music. Good food. Network and a good time!”
Smith added.
Now in its fourth year, the Latin Fest
event seeks to not only bring awareness
about its scholarship effort, but hopes to
attract Latino alumni from CU Boulder, DU
and from other institutions.
Alires-Trujillo said, “I hope that it’s not limited to the alumni of CU and DU.” Eventually
she’d “like to include the committee members
of other boards (from other institutions).”
Alires-Trujillo and Smith invite fellow
alumni to reach out to their respective
alma matter for more information about
their alumni associations. “It’s critical [for
alumni to get involved] because we can’t do
it with out them,” Smith said. “There are
a lot of things we could do if we had more
people involved.”
Last September, DULAA and University
of Colorado Hispanic Alumni Association
(CUHAA) hosted the Latino Policy
Symposium where issues of importance to
the Latino community were discussed. The
event is also planned for this year along with
a variety of other upcoming events.
Latin Fest IV is open to the public. It will
be held on Friday, March 30 at Su Teatro, 721
Santa Fe Drive. Networking, raffel, light appetizers and cash bar from 6-8 p.m. and music
and dancing from 8-11 p.m. Entertainment
provided by Kruzin. $15 per person.
“People should just come out and have a
good time,” Smith said. “Support the organization and support our cause,” Alires-Trujillo
shared.

“Yo siempre he puesto en mi licencia de conducir que
yo quiero ser una donante”, dice la residente de Denver
Margaret Pacheco. Después de eso, ella no ha vuelto a
pensar en eso. Pero, en el 2004, en una visita de rutina
al médico, las pruebas mostraron una anormalidad. Una
biopsia confirmó más tarde un problema con los riñones.
Ella necesitaba un trasplante. Pero, debido a su edad, los
médicos le dijeron que podría ser una espera muy grande o
que quizás nunca la conseguiría.
“Cada mes cuando veía a mis médicos mis riñones
estaban peor”, dijo la trabajadora retirada del hospital.
Finalmente en el 2010, sin tener un donador disponible,
Pacheco entró en diálisis, un tratamiento de tres veces por
semana, de tres a cuatro horas en el cual el paciente está
conectado a una máquina que hace las funciones que el
riñón ya no puede hacer.
A pesar de la inconveniencia Pacheco hizo lo que mejor

La vida pos operacional no significa que tiene que
estar pegada a un teléfono. Si un paciente sigue las pautas
médicas y lleva un estilo de vida saludable, las cosas pueden
ser sencillas — o, por lo menos manejables. “La calidad de
vida de un trasplante de órganos puede estar muy cerca a
lo normal”, dice el Profesor Asistente de Medicina de la
Universitdad de Colorado, el Dr. Scott Biggins. “Ellos pueden
ser manejados por el médico primario”.
Pero aun cuando cientos de trasplantes se hacen cada
semana, todavía existen problemas bioéticos que tienen que
ser debatidos. ‘El turismo de órganos’, gente que viaja fuera del
país para recibir un órgano, sigue siendo un problema delicado.
También, ‘el cultivo de órganos’, sacar órganos de prisioneros
ejecutados continua siendo un cargo en contra de la China.
Singapur ha prohibido del todo la donación de órganos
para evitar la explotación de los “pobres y desaventajados
socialmente” que están desesperados por el dinero pero que
tampoco pueden tomar una decisión informada. Pero el tráfico
ilegal de órganos continúa creciendo a pesar de estos problemas.
Otras preguntas aparecen. ¿Debe recibir un hígado nuevo
un alcohólico? ¿Debería ser basado en la riqueza o la celebridad? ¿Debería poder la gente vender sus propias partes? Una
persona solamente necesita un riñón y solamente una parte
del hígado puede ser aceptada de un donante. En tiempos fiscalmente difíciles, ¿vale la pena tener el beneficio? ¿Debe tener
una persona que ha rechazado un órgano buscar el segundo?
Tampoco hay un convenio uniforme sobre cuándo se
debe sacar un órgano. Es cuando el corazón y los pulmones
dejan de funcionar o ¿cuándo el cerebro se “oscurece”? Los
prisioneros estatales son otro problema. ¿Debe tener un prisionero condenado a muerte conseguir un corazón nuevo?
¿Debería pagar el estado? ¿Quién es demasiado viejo para
calificar a un trasplante?
En un futuro no muy distante, una persona puede
también crear sus propios órganos de reemplazo usando su
propio DNA. Si, y cuando llegue ese momento, comenzará
un nueva serie de debates sobre la moralidad de usar células
madres. Y ¿qué decimos acerca de la clonación?
“Es un tópico muy controvertido y muy debatido”, dice el
Dr. Biggins. Y los argumentos morales no deben llegar a los
órganos mayores. Solamente debatir los donantes ‘pagos vs.
voluntarios’ no ha sido resuelto hasta ahora. “La línea entre
hacerlo por puro altruismo y el deseo de ser compensado es
muy importante.”
Con cerca de 5 mil personas que mueren mientras
esperan en la lista de trasplante de órganos, parecería que
hay una necesidad genuina para que la mayoría de esos
problemas sean resueltos. Pero, no importa quien pueda
estar esperando que se resuelvan estos problemas, cuando
se llega a un final bioético, las respuestas raramente son
rápidas y satisfactorias.

Rewind to the early ‘80s and the
Baltimore Colts might have felt like the
jilted or rejected lover, or the bride or groom
left at the altar? Elway, a Hall of Famer and
former Denver Broncos quarterback, then
a bright-eyed and competitive rookie, said
“no” to the Colts twenty some years ago. With
that move Elway became one of the NFL’s
most memorable if not the most exciting
quarterback of all time.
He left the Colts and preferred to start off
his career with the Denver Broncos and we
all know the “rest is NFL history.” The Colts
and the city of Baltimore never quite forgave
him for that bold move. Fast forward 20 years
to another famed quarterback, Manning left
the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent and
has made his way to the 5280 city to lead the
Broncos to perhaps one or two Super Bowls
under the overall operational direction of none
other than a legend — Elway.
On Monday, the 35-year-old Manning
chose to lead the Denver Broncos beginning in their 2012-2013 season. Manning
brings experience to the home team and
the possible fulfillment of another Super
Bowl championship. To the dismay of many
Tim Tebow fans, Manning has changed the
course of Tebow’s future. A possible Tebow
trade is inevitable and evident. Undoubtedly,
Tebow will find his place in the sun beyond
the Mile High City.
In the final analysis, Manning’s choice
was the best one for him and Denver football.
A competitor much like Elway, Manning’s
desire to lead the Denver Broncos underscores his final NFL goal, to end his football
career with the biggest of bangs. Clearly,
Elway is still a competitor who can still win
games — Manning is no slacker who can
still deliver.
