Far from the city, where artificial light is dim or absent, the
nighttime sky is a perfect wonder.
On a clear night it’s an amazing cluster of lights suspended in
the most naturally haphazard way.
Amazingly, each individual twinkle
holds the exact same position, the
same wonderment, as when our
planet’s first inhabitants gazed
skyward.
Since then, our understanding of space has grown exponentially. Still, because of the immensity of the Universe, this everincreasing knowledge barely fills
a teacup. Nevertheless, its infinite
sprawl continues to inspire in the
same way the unknown inspired
early day explorers who looked
out and could only wonder what
existed beyond the horizon.
In mid-July, the National
Aeronautics
and
Space
Administration, NASA, added a
bit more to our understanding of
space when it flew a probe past
the last known planet in our solar
system. The New Horizons mission, launched nearly a decade
ago, glided past Pluto taking the
first finely detailed photographs
of its surface. As it did so, it also

Faith in Pope Francis and the Church
Julie Martinez of Washington,
D.C. remembers 2008 when Pope
Benedict visited our capitol city.
There wasn’t much excitement outside her heavily Catholic neighborhood nicknamed, ‘Little Rome’, near
Catholic University and the headquarters of the U.S. Conference of
Bishops in the northeast section
of the city. Those were the days of
pedophile cover-ups and dogmatic

rulings from the Vatican that created skepticism amongst a weary faithful.
Fast forward to present day, and the scenario is drastically different as Pope Francis prepares to visit Washington,
D.C. When he arrives next week, Martinez’ parents, Julian
and Isabel of Texas, along with thousands of others from
across the country, will be there to greet him. “This Pope
in particular is making people see the good parts about the
Church. His visit is all people are talking about. My mother
is drawn to the message that the Church is opening back up,
that there is a place for you if you believe in social justice,
the environment, and working against poverty and inequality,” according to Martinez.
The message may come as second nature to the first
Pope elected from the Jesuit order, a group known for focusing on education and working for social justice. As a native
Argentine and first Pope from the Americas, Francis seems
to be translating an Old World perspective to the New World
in the form of global leadership on sensitive political issues.
Francis has voiced major concern over climate change saying the environment has been pushed to a ‘breaking point’
and that treatment of our surroundings and reliance on fossil fuels has been ‘reckless’. Changes have also been made
inside Church doctrine; he has altered the Church stance
toward women who have had abortions and Catholics that
have divorced to be more lenient and compassionate.
The Pope is recognized as Head of State of the Vatican
City State, as has been customary in the U.S. since the mid
1980’s, and as such will be formally welcomed to the country by President Obama. He will also participate in a Pope
Mobile parade, will meet with U.S. Bishops and will address
a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress. Among all the issues
expected to be raised with U.S. policymakers, the Pope is
expected to convey his perspective on the world’s migration
issues – namely the Syrian exodus and the U.S.’ role in dealing with its southern border.
Pope Francis’ message is expected to juxtapose against
the Donald Trump hate-laden vitriol recently grabbing headlines. It is on the issue of immigration that Latinos from all
over the country hold an extraordinary amount of hope and
on this issue, groups are beseeching the Pope to extend
morally grounded leadership.
One of the immigration groups urging the Pope’s
actions on the issue of immigration reform is known as,
‘100 Mujeres, 100 Millas’ or ‘100 Women, 100 Miles’. The
consortium of activists and their allies are meeting in
Philadelphia and marching 100 miles to Washington, D.C.
For Celesté Martinez, who works at El Centro Humanitario
with the Colorado immigrant community, this is an issue
of maintaining dignity, challenging views, and building
partnerships, “Pope Francis has taken a position on global
migration. We are appealing to him to help us put a human
face on immigration and promote the intersection between
social justice and spirituality.”
Celesté will be joined by Coloradans, Martha Freyre and
Ezzie Dominguez. At their Denver press conference prior to
their east coast pilgrimage, the women declared they want
to, “…echo the Pope’s message for migrant dignity and lift
up the hardships immigrant women face in the U.S.” The

Mirando adelante al dia de hoy, el escenario es drásticamente diferente ahora que el Papa Francisco se prepara
para visitar a Washington, D.C. Cuando él llegue la semana
entrante, los padres de Martínez, Julian e Isabel de Texas,
junto con miles de otros de todo el país, estarán allí para
recibirlo. “Este Papa en especial está haciendo que la gente
vea las partes buenas de la iglesia. Su visita es eso de lo
que todos están hablando. Mi madre está siendo atraída al
mensaje de que la Iglesia se está abriendo de nuevo, que hay
un lugar en ella para uno si uno cree en la justicia social,
el ambiente y trabajar contra la pobreza y la desigualdad”,
según Martínez.
El mensaje puede venir como algo muy natural del
primer Papa elegido de la orden Jesuita, un grupo conocido por enfocarse en la educación y trabajar por la justicia
social. Como originario de Argentina y el primer Papa de
las Américas, Francisco parece estar traduciendo una vieja
perspectiva del mundo a un nuevo mundo en la forma de
liderazgo global en problemas políticamente sensitivos.
Francisco ha expuesto una mayor preocupación acerca del
cambio de clima diciendo que el ambiente ha sido empujado
a un ‘punto crítico’ y que el tratamiento de nuestros alrededores y la dependencia en los combustibles fósiles han sido
‘imprudentes’. Se han hecho cambios también en la doctrina
de la iglesia; él ha alterado la posición de la iglesia hacia
las mujeres que han tenido abortos y católicos que se han
divorciado para ser más benévolo y compasivo.
El Papa es reconocido como el Jefe de Estado del
Estado Ciudad del Vaticano, como ha sido la costumbre en
los EE.UU. desde mediados de los años de 1980, y como

state’s agricultural heritage.
Entries must be submitted to the Colorado Department

year and must relate to Colorado agriculture in some way.
Prizes will be awarded in five subject areas: agritourism,

2016 budget proposal for consideration by Denver City
Council on Monday, Sept. 14. Hancock’s proposal boasts $7.1
million to expand mobility options, $8 million for affordable
housing, $24 million for Denver Sheriff Department reforms,
$1.4 million to purchase more body cameras for police officers,

Pope Francis is coming to the
United States during the Latino
Heritage Month celebrations. He
arrives from Cuba on the afternoon
of the 22nd and departs for Rome
on Sunday evening, September 27th.
In his wake he will leave
the effects of a meeting with the
President at the White House, an
address before a joint session of
Congress,
a keynote speech before

the United Nations and his appearances at the “World Meeting of Families 2015” event in
Philadelphia. The Pope will draw audiences that ranges from
the faithful to non-Catholics who disagree not only with
some of the traditional positions of the Church, but more
importantly his stance on the forgiveness of women who
abort and the emerging Gay institutions.
When the early Christian Church chose to leave women
out of the cannon, this choice left a great vacuum in the pantheon of Christian history that the Church has yet to fill. When
Mary Magdalene was denied her rightful place at the side of
Christ and even treated as a prostitute and bad person after
all of her contribution of money, effort, devotion and pain, the
table was set for a centuries-long journey to justice.
The Nicene Creed ordered by Emperor Constantine
in 325 C.E. established the “Father, Son and Holy Spirit”
concept as the basis for worship. In doing so however, it
separated the Church in Europe from key areas of the Middle
East and also left women out of the picture even though
there is ample evidence that the Holy Spirit resides in the
realm of the Feminine principle.
The diminished female presence has created growing
repercussions that need to be addressed. This is part of the
issues that Pope Francis appears to be attempting to engage
as he takes tentative steps of reconciliation with the modern
woman and even the modern gay couple and their families.
In Latino history, the Virgin Mary in her various forms
became the suffering mother of a bleeding Christ whose
power is derived from what she can get her Son to do rather
than from her power as part of the Trinity. Desperate people
dramatize in Mexican novelas, for example, pray to the
Virgin of Guadalupe to intercede with the more remote figure of the masculine Christ to find solace, hope and blessing.
Pope Francis as a Spanish-speaking Argentinean resonates with the Latino community. His ministry however is even
more relevant to the social and cultural issues that are reflected
in church attendance and membership in the wider community.
His visit to America is also timely in the sense that our
current presidential campaigns are pushing the hot-button
notions related to marriage and gender equality as they affect
the concept of family. He will probably speak about this with
measured words, but there is no doubt that they will include
expressions of love, forgiveness and reconciliation.
Philadelphia is the place to be on Saturday, September
22 where the day begins with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the
Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and ends with
a visit to the Festival of Families at the Benjamin Franklin
Parkway beginning at 7:30 p.m. Pope Francis will again visit
the World Meeting of Families the next day to offer Mass at
4 p.m. for the conclusion of the festivities and a visit with
volunteers and benefactors at 7 p.m.
Papal visits have always been grand events with very
special meaning. This visit and celebration promises to
be even more meaningful as it comes at a pivotal time in
America and in the Catholic Church history.

Stories from one of Colorado’s most talented families
of musicians
Hispanic Heritage Series
Part II of VI

Editor’s Note: La Voz celebrates Hispanic Heritage with a
six-part series on notable individuals and families with roots
and traditions in the Centennial state. In this second chapter
of the series we focus on a trailblazing singer and violinist
and a member of the premier musical organization of the
United States Army.
The Trujillo name is one known throughout Colorado.
Lorenzo Trujillo, a lawyer and educator as well as a successful violinist, has seen his exploits published and revered
across multiple publications and media.
The Trailblazer
There would be no Lorenzo Trujillo, however, had it not
been for his aunt Eva Nuánez who was a trailblazer not only
for the Trujillo family, but for professional female musicians.
“Eva is a trailblazer,” Trujillo said. “She broke through
the stereotype glass ceiling that only allowed men to play
professionally.”
Nuánez, who was born in 1921 in Berwin, Colorado,
began playing violin at age 13 as part of her school orchestra
at then-Horace Mann Junior High School in Denver.
Her star quickly rose and by 1949 she was playing professionally as one of the nation’s few Latina songstresses
and female violinists. She played a variety of venues in
Denver including the 28th Street Café, The Larimer Grill,
Pioneer Bar, CIO Club and The Fern.
“She broke the rules by performing throughout the Denver
area in popular ballrooms,” Trujillo said. “Most notable is that
she was one of the first Latinas in the country to cross over
to incorporate popular English music into her standard repertoire – ballads, westerns and top tunes of the day.”
A coal miner’s daughter who grew up without the
traditional lessons and training that many noted violinists
receive, Nuánez was excited to receive $5 for weeknights
and $10 for weekend dance music, Trujillo recalled.
“That was especially significant because, as a general
rule, only men were paid musicians,” he said.
Now 94, Nuánez can still recollect her musical career
with precise detail.
The Trumpeter

however, whose musical upbringing coincided with his desire
to serve in the United
States Army.
“Since he was 6
years old he has been
engaged in music,”
Lorenzo Trujillo said of
his son. “He started
the trumpet during
his middle and high
school years while still
playing violin.”
And it quickly Lorenzo Trujillo, Jr.
became his focus.
Trujillo Jr. now holds one of the most notable positions
within the U.S. Army Concert Band: appointed Commercial/
Lead Trumpet Chair. He is referred to as a ‘musical chameleon’ due to his ability to perform concert-style as well as
jazz, Latin and several other sub-genres.
Trujillo Jr. has performed in numerous, high-visibility
missions, but it was his first in-uniform performance with
his mother in the audience that stands out to him.
“What really stuck with me during “The Armed Forces
Salute” was when I saw her standing during “The Army
Song” and realized she stood for me,” he said.
To reach such an esteemed level in the U.S. Army
Concert Band, Trujillo Jr. had to compete against musicians
from around the world, Trujillo said.
He won the audition. Then again, according to Trujillo,
performing if front of a large audience is not anything his
son wasn’t accustomed to.
“His background comes from his lifetime of training as
a musician with an innate talent for music plus a lifetime
of performance with our family and later with greats such
as Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Frankie Valle, Alejandro
Fernandez and many others throughout the United States
and abroad,” Trujillo said. “I am so very proud of him and
his successes, as I am of all our children. He started playing in the mariachi at St. Cajetan’s and with the Southwest
Musicians and translated those humble beginnings into a
career of national acclaim.”

éxito, que ha visto sus éxitos publicados y reverenciado en

“It was kind of a Christmas morning feeling,” said NASA
spokesperson Laurie Cantillo, from her Washington, D.C.,
office. It was also, she said, “the realization of a dream.”
In fact, it was a dream hatched and nurtured, in part, by a
Coloradan and a former Coloradan.
The dream came together in fits and starts. Initially
imagined by scientists Alan Stern, a University of Colorado
graduate, and the University of Colorado’s Fran Bagenal
in1989, the idea of a mission to Pluto failed to impress. After
some budget refinements, a more focused mission statement, configuration issues solved and, of course, competing
scientific interests addressed, NASA gave its blessing.
January 19, 2006, New Horizons launched. At a speed of
just more than 39,000 miles per hour, it zipped past the moon
in mere hours. It crossed the Martian orbit five months later,
all the while sending back data on what it observed. But for
the remainder of its trek it transmitted data only on a periodic basis. To save fuel, the spacecraft would, from time to
time, be ordered into hibernation. But last December NASA
woke it up to complete the mission.
On July 14, 2015, New Horizons radioed back – from a
distance of 2.97 billion miles – what scientists Stern and
Bagenal had imagined when they had their initial conversation about Pluto some 3,363 days earlier. But this time, they
had pictures to go with it.
“They had one shot,” said NASA’s Cantillo, “and they
nailed it.” An understatement, actually. The mission’s success, was much more than a flyby. It was, say scientists,
more like firing an arrow into the darkness from New York
and hitting the bullseye in San Francisco.
For Professor Bagenal, who teaches astrophysics and
planetary sciences at CU and who speaks with a modesty that
masks the enormity of the mission, New Horizons’ success
was just good science. “It was the obvious place to go,” she said
in a business-like tone during a recent phone conversation.
Bagenal said the mission’s success confirmed a number
of theories science previously held about PIuto. But, in addition to turning theory into hard evidence, there was also
plenty of new ground broken on the mission. “We found a
lot of surprising things,” including data on the planet’s geology, its surface, its atmosphere and its largest moon, Charon.
The mission also finally determined a precise measurement for Pluto. Until New Horizons, science was only guessing about the planet’s size. Scientists now know Pluto’s land
mass is approximately twice the size of Texas. “There are
many questions remaining, lots of stuff to work on. But you
answer your questions and you keep looking,” said Bagenal.
Capturing images on this distant planet is no small
feat. To do so required the creation of brand new technology.
That is where another Colorado connection to New Horizons
enters the picture.
The camera photographing Pluto was developed by
Colorado’s Ball Aerospace. Its clarity is amazing, says
Mission commander Stern who wrote about New Horizons
for TIME Magazine. Photographed from a distance of
approximately 6,000 miles from the surface, the pictures
show remarkable detail. How remarkable? Imagine pointing
a camera in New York across the Atlantic and getting back
images showing an in-focus Eiffel Tower.
Despite the bonanza of receiving data unimaginable
just a few years ago, there is a natural frustration to what
scientists are receiving. Because Pluto is so far away, images sent back today are not immediately retrievable. In fact,
scientists will have to wait another sixteen months before all
of New Horizon’s cache of information will be in their hands.
But what they’ve received to date, is scientifically tantalizing. The latest images show topography that resembles
dunes, a feature no one ever imagined would be there.
When discussing the mission’s success, it’s important
to note that it was achieved using ‘ancient’ technology, that
is, equipment that would be considered outdated in any modern laboratory environment. Put another way, New Horizons
is traveling with the equivalent of a ten-year-old computer,
essentially, an antique.
But, while old technology is a drawback, it’s just the way
it goes, said Bagenal. “The reality is you’re not going to put
the best technology (on board).” Something reliable, she
said, is far more important than the latest widget. “Rather
than the fancy car that might break down, you go with a reliable old Ford that will go and go and go.”
The capabilities and limitations of New Horizon’s
payload will be tested over the next decade. That’s because
mapping Pluto is only part of the mission. The remainder,
before New Horizons is shut down sometime in 2026, will be
an exploration of the Kuiper Belt, the region that separates
our solar system from interstellar space.
Taking readings of the Kuiper Belt will depend mightily on the Student Dust Counter, an instrument built by
CU-Boulder undergraduate and graduate students in the
Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. Its job is to
detect and analyze interplanetary dust, a component of the
mission that will seriously expand our knowledge of this
previously unchartered territory.
The SDC, also the only student-built instrument ever
flown on a planetary mission, will remain busy for the next
decade. The Kuiper Belt, a region estimated to stretch more
than a billion miles across, is home to an estimated 70,000
objects 60 miles in diameter, essentially rocks that would fit
neatly into the space that separates Denver from Colorado
Springs. Each object contains what science believes is evidence that will help explain how our solar system came into
existence nearly five billion years ago.
Short of a mind-boggling discovery, much of what New
Horizons detects over the next decade will be information that
only science can appreciate. But, the information gathered
from its fly-by also means the construction of one more rung
on the ladder that will one day allow man to climb higher into
the heavens and learn more about his place in the Universe.
(Note: In 2006, Pluto was downsized as a planet and
reclassified as a ‘dwarf planet.’ However, New Horizons scientists refer to it as a planet. As such, it is referred to as a full
planet in this story.)

Pueblo Community College offers affordable education

History of the Pueblo Community College started back
in 1933 when it was called the Southern Colorado Junior
College (SCJC), and in 1937 it was renamed Pueblo Junior
College. In 1961 the Junior College was dissolved and it was
renamed the Southern Colorado State College (SCSC). In
1979 the change came when the Colorado State Legislature
set up the Pueblo Vocational Community College (PVCC).
The last change took place in 1982, when the name was
changed to Pueblo Community College (PCC).
The enrollment of 6,592 students is spread across four
different campuses in Southern Colorado. They include
main campus in Pueblo, the Fremont Campus which is
located in Cañon City at 51320 W Hwy 50, the Southwest
Center in Cortez and the campus in Durango.
Anyone interested in attending PCC must first, complete
the application for admission and maybe required to take a
placement exam. The second step is application for financial
aid. In order to obtain financial aid, the student must fill
out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Pueblo Community College has a large minority student

population and they make up 45 percent of the student body,
with Hispanics making up the majority. One of the reasons
is the instate tuition is only $3,488 compared to the state
average of $5,660. Another reason could be the financial
aid with work-study makes college more affordable to the
students.
PCC offers three dozen certificate and degree programs
with 13 health programs. Included are the Dental Assistant
Program, the Dental Hygienist Program, Occupational
Therapy Assistant Program, the Physical Therapy assistant
Program, the Associate Degree in Nursing Program and the
Licensed Practical Nursing Program to name a few.
Online courses, the newest way to obtain a degree and
PCC offers the Early College Program (EPC). This program
is set up to offer high school students from the local area
high schools, the ability to take college level courses for
credit at no cost to the student. Last year PCC awarded a
two year degree to 30 high school students. These students
now can have their class credits transferred to a four year
degree program with two years’ credits. Night and weekend
classes are available as well as work study employment and
assistance to find employment.

Broncos defense gets the win!
This past Sunday the Denver
Broncos put the “D” back in Denver
with a hard fought game against the
Baltimore Ravens. Denver’s offense
on the other hand “is still a work
in progress,” according to quarterback Peyton Manning. That would
be an understatement as Manning
was unable to find the end zone all
day. Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco
on the other hand experienced the

same issue as both quarterbacks
gave up interceptions that turned into touchdowns.
Denver’s interception came at a critical point in the
game after the Ravens took the lead from Denver and their
defense seemingly changed the momentum of the game.
Talib Aqib stepped in front of Steve Smith and snatched
the ball weaving his way to the end zone changing the
momentum. Baltimore made a concerted effort to win after
marching down the field on the last drive of the game when
Flacco made two attempts at the end zone with a pass that
was partially deflected by Bradley Roby and hit Smith in the
facemask before he fell out of bounds. The next shot was
over the top down the center of the field where former Raven
Darian Stewart flashed across the end one at the last minute
to pluck Flacco’s pass right out of air, sealing Denver’s first
victory of the season.
Denver’s offense is and will be the biggest question
mark heading into Thursday night’s game against the Chiefs.
Game two of the season has the makings of another defensive battle but it’s the offense that has fans worried so far.
In other sports the Colorado Rockies shared a win with
the Broncos Sunday with a 3-2 win over the Mariners taking
the three-game series 2-1. Colorado unfortunately lost their
next game in L.A. to the Dodgers 1–4. Colorado will finish up
their three-game series against the Dodgers this Wednesday
before coming home to host the San Diego Padres in a threegame series.

de intereses científicos, la NASA dio su bendición.
Enero 19, 2006, New Horizon fue lanzado al espacio.
A una velocidad de apenas más de 39,000 millas por hora,
paso por la luna en unas cuantas horas. Cruzó la órbita
de Marte cinco meses después, mandando mientras tanto
datos de lo que observaba. Pero para el restante del camino

de la misión, era mucho más que un tiro al aire. Fue, dicen
los científicos, mas como tirar una flecha en la oscuridad
de Nueva York y dando en el blanco en San Francisco.
