Whether they were the best
pilots or submarine commanders,
or played critical roles as translators in the war on terror or, more
simply, were willing to shed blood
for their country, if word got out
that they were gay, the U.S. military wanted no part of them. If a
soldier, sailor, airman or marine
acknowledged being gay, their
careers came to a screeching halt.
But last month, in an interminable
overnight, everything changed.
On Sept. 20, 2011, the military
ban on gays and lesbians came to
an end. “Today, it is not a factor,”

The right influences, the right leaders

Standing on stage in front of almost 900 attendees, the
big screen televisions to the left and to the right focused on
Juan Marquez as he shared his story.
Marquez spoke with eloquence and insight into his
young life that commanded the attention of the many
women and handful of men, which included Denver Mayor
Michael Hancock and author Wes Moore (“The Other Wes
Moore”), in attendance at the Mile High United Way’s 13th
Annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon a week ago.
An event geared toward celebrating women’s leadership
role within their community Marquez, along with Hancock
who introduced Moore as keynote speaker, addressed the
crowd. There, he spoke of the strife his family has overcome,
the women that have made a difference in his life and the
role Mile High Youth Corps has played.

125th anniversary in 2012.
It was founded in 1887 as the first
United Way in the country.
La Voz spoke with the bright-eyed Marquez who was in
Broomfield for a clearing project. At 19-years-old, Marquez
has lived through trying times, yet radiated positivity, which
he lost during a period of time when he said he was “angry.”
“Angry,” the adjective he used to describe the time
following the death of his father, Juan Inocente Marquez.
Marquez, his two siblings, Natalie, 11, and Christian, 16, and
his mother faced several obstacles after their loss including
losing their home to foreclosure. “My mom, she was actually
lost after my dad’s death,” Marquez said.
Still, he credits his mother, Alicia Marquez, for her
will and strength that helped their family get back on their
feet. “My mom had the courage to step up,” he said. The
family was eventually able to purchase a renovated home
in Lakewood. “My mom really stepped it up after a loss like
that,” he continued, “My mom still stayed there for us.”
He also spoke fondly about his wife, Elida Marquez, and
his mother-in-law, Maria Luz Perez, and how they changed
his outlook in life. He met his wife about a year after his
father’s death. He said, “She kept me happy.” They’ve been
together for four years and have a son together. Juan Isai
will be two-years-old in November. For him, all three women
have taught him a very important lesson, “… how to really
become a man,” he said. “They have taken over for my dad’s
lecturing. They are still teaching me.”
Marquez sees his life mirror his father’s in some ways.
Marquez lost his father when he was just 14-years-old. His
father lost his mother from lung cancer when he was also age
14. Although Marquez was able to graduate from high school,
his father, at 17, was forced to drop out because he was about
to be a father. “It really is crazy, insane to know what my dad
has been through and I’m going through it as well.”
Marquez graduated from John F. Kennedy High School
in 2010. He was the first in his family to do so and is also
the first in his family to pursue higher education. “It’s the
greatest feeling to have a diploma,” he said. He is currently
attending Arapahoe Community College and plans to enroll
at Red Rocks Community College to obtain an associate of
applied science degree in Fire Science Technology. He’s
looked into the possibility of earning a bachelors degree in
Fire Management in the future.
He has been working for the Mile High Youth Corps for
the past 14 months. There, Marquez has participated in a
variety of green oriented projects. “We are doing energy and
water conservation. We go to low income buildings to help
their energy and water so buildings become more energy
efficient with the appliances we install for them,” he said.
The opportunities have also taken him to many state parks
that include the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife
Refuge and Golden Canyon.

For Marquez, working for Mile High Youth Corps has
been a difference maker. He expressed his gratitude for the
organization saying, “I feel like I have more knowledge and
working skills.” He continued, “Once in a lifetime opportunity
to change my life. They’ve given me the opportunity to strive,
succeed, personal growth and really think of my future.”

how terrible things can get you down, have the right influences, have the right leaders—it is all possible.”

Chamber opposes Initiative 300
The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Denver
announced that it is in opposition of Initiative 300, which
would mandate that employers within the City & County of
Denver provide paid sick and safe time leave to all employees (including part-time and temporary employees).
The Hispanic Chamber President and CEO, James
Mejía, stated, “The Chamber’s Public Policy Committee has
been working really hard to make sure important issues facing businesses and our members are voiced. This initiative
would be costly to many businesses and does not take into
account the different types of businesses and their needs.”
The Hispanic Chamber’s mission is to promote and
advance the growth of Hispanic Business and realizes the
negative effects that Initiative 300 could have on its members efforts to grow small business.

Metro State Latino population
accelerates
Metropolitan State College of Denver reaches record
level of Latino undergraduate student enrollment —a 12
percent increase from 2010. This brings the College’s Latino
enrollment to 18.2 percent (4,281 students) and overall students of color to 31.6 (7,443 students).
Metro State was recognized nationally in 2010 by
Excelencia in Education as one of only four institutions that are
emerging Hispanic Serving Institutions. Federal recognition as
an HSI requires a 25 percent Latino undergraduate enrollment.

Denver water rates for 2012
The Denver Board of Water Commissioners voted on a
water rate increase for 2012 to provide necessary funding for
the utility’s capital projects. The new water rates will take
effect January 2012 and will help the utility stay on top of
needed projects to address its aging infrastructure.
Details of the 2012 rates can be found on Denver Water’s

Race for the Cure
Fifty thousand walkers and runners took to the streets
of Denver Sunday morning decked out in pink regalia to
honor, remember and celebrate those in their lives who
are fighting or have fought breast cancer. This army of
pink raised nearly $3 million for the care and treatment of
themselves, their partners, sisters, daughters and friends
suffering from this deadly disease.
Among these 50,000 walkers and runners, were approximately 3,000 breast cancer survivors. In addition, 502 teams
of 10 persons or more participated in this year’s Race for the
Cure event.
Survivor Diana Trujillo led the pack in fundraising
efforts by raising $36,830, contributing to the $3 million
total. Denver Komen is hoping to continue the fundraising
momentum with their year-round text donation campaign.

DU Spanish Professor Ralph DiFranco has spent decades
unearthing poetry that has been buried in manuscripts and
rare books for up to 400 years.
For his work, he’s been chosen as the recipient of
the José Vasconcelos International Award, which is given
each year by the Mexican cultural organization Frente de
Afirmación Hispanista.
Since 1968, the award has been given to an “eminent
Hispanist who has distinguished her/himself in promoting
and expanding our awareness of Hispanic language, literature and culture,” according to the organization. Well-known
past recipients include the Spanish poet-in-exile León
Felipe (1968), the Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges
(1973), the American film producer Samuel Bronston (1978)
and the Venezuelan novelist Arturo Úslar Pietri (1988).
“I have unbounded excitement and profound humility,”
DiFranco says. “Having your name mentioned and listed
alongside that of Borges, for example, is truly an amazing
and humbling experience.” DiFranco will receive the honor
during a gold medal award ceremony at the Magnolia Hotel
in Denver on Oct. 8.

Transitional Council announced that the

Verdict in: An Italian jury on Monday
found Amanda Knox innocent of murdering
her British roommate Meredith Kercher.
Earlier in the day, Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito made their final

Remembering ‘Capulina’: Mexican
comedian Gaspar Henaine Perez, known to
his fans as “Capulina,” died Friday. Henaine
Perez known for his white comedy, starred
in many films and television programs. He
was 85.
Museum honors miners: The
Colchagua Museum in Santa Cruz in Chile
recently unveiled a room dedicated to the 33
miners who were trapped in a mine for more
than two months last year. The museum also
recognizes the efforts made by the rescue
teams that helped free the miners.
In North America
In session: The U.S. Supreme Court
began its new session this week. The court’s
docket will include President Obama’s
health care law, Arizona’s immigration law
and affirmative action.
Immigration law upheld: Many facets of the controversial immigration law
in Alabama will stand as ruled by a federal
judge last week. Among the provisions is
requiring schools to report the immigration status of students who are enrolling
for the first-time. Many families have since
withdrawn their children from area public
schools because of fear due to the implementation of the law.
Wall Street protests: Seven hundred
protestors on Brooklyn Bridge were arrested
on Saturday. The group, Occupy Wall Street,
has camped out near Wall Street for the
past two weeks voicing their concern over
a myriad of issues from the environment to
corporate greed.
Terrorism plot: Massachusetts resident and American citizen Rezwan Ferdaus
was arrested last Wednesday for a terrorism plot involving attacking the Pentagon
and the U.S. Capitol with remote-controlled
model airplanes packed with explosives.

Alabama is at it again, but this time
with Latino immigrants who are there to
work hard and harvest the crops for the dinner table. The worst part is that the law and
the authorities will be targeting innocent
children who go to school and must now
answer for the actions of their parents.
In a Miami Herald commentary, Leonard
Pitts states that, “Maybe it’s time to take the
Tea Party at its word” about wanting “their”
country back. The Tea Party and its racist
overtones provide cover for those that seek
to enforce their sense of superiority and
discriminate against a people that cannot
defend itself.
The level of noise and actions against
Latino immigrants also shows the desperation of the group in power in the face of a
demographic shift that will eventually make
them a minority. That is why “Jim Crow” is
now being tried on the Latino community
in Alabama.

de cosecha, yo me acuerdo de ver como se
planteaba esto en Wichita Falls, Texas en
donde a nuestro grupo se les negaban las
hamburguesas en un restaurante. Yo me
acuerdo de mi madre enfurecida tomando
el volante del camión en que viajábamos y
llevando la caravana en medio de las calles
del centro hasta que de pronto lo metía en el
estacionamiento de un restaurante.
Nos servían, comíamos hasta donde
podíamos y dábamos buen dinero al negocio.
Por años, la gente hablaba de su hazaña y el
milagro de alimentar a los hambrientos en
Wichita Falls.
No fue sino hasta 40 años después, en
una conversación casual en Puerto Vallarta,
México que finalmente supe todo el cuento.
Su respuesta a la pregunta sobre cuál fue su
parte en este evento fue de que ella sabia
como leer y seguir manejando mientras leía
los anuncios horribles contra los mexicanos
hasta que llegó a uno que al frente del restaurante decía, “Nosotros servimos a todos
los hijos de Dios”.
Alabama está comenzando de nuevo,
pero esta vez con inmigrantes latinos que
están allí para trabajar duro y cosechar
los frutos para la mesa de la cena. La peor
parte es que la ley y las autoridades estarán
enfocándose en niños inocentes que van a

Salazars emphasize education
Hispanic Heritage celebrates
Latino families Part IV Of VI
Lola and Robert Salazar grew
up in Denver, Lola in the Southwest
and Rob in the Northwest. Although
in different neighborhoods, the two
were high school sweethearts and

schools, were married. The Salazars
coin their parents as large influences
in their lives. “We were grateful to

knew education was a priority and something we needed to
pursue.”
After both received their degrees, a young Lola Salazar
began her teaching career in Jefferson County Schools
where she taught for 10 years before deciding to stay home
with her two children. “I truly believed I was making a difference in the young lives I taught,” she said.
Rob Salazar saw business in his future. Starting his
career as a certified public accountant, he went on to form
his own CPA and consulting firm at the impressive age of
26. Receiving national recognition for his specialization
in the healthcare industry, he is still at it today as part of
Central Street Investors, Inc. where he and his two children,
Isiah and Angelique, manage investments such as student
housing, food service, retail, commercial and industrial real
estate, healthcare and more.
It was their success in business and education that
allowed for the Salazars to combine their work. It was after
the tragedy of Columbine High School in 1999 on that dark
April day when the Salazars both impassioned about education, knew they needed to do something. “We started the
Salazar Family Foundation. Our first project was to give

money to The Jefferson Foundation to assist with conflict
mediation and literacy throughout Jefferson County,” they
shared.
The 501 (c) (3) is in its 12th year of “impacting the lifelong learning of students.” The foundation doesn’t provide
scholarships directly to students but rather supports a wider
range of students by supporting nonprofit organizations that
provide funding to students and schools in need. Over the
years the Salazars have funded many programs with The
Denver Public School Foundation, The Jefferson Foundation,
Latin American Educational Foundation and Escuela De
Guadalupe. The organizations supported use grants from the
Salazar Family Foundation for things such as summer reading programs, books, safe playground equipment, bilingual
learning resources, scholarships, computer labs and more.

Salazar who attended Bryant-Webster Elementary, Horace
Mann Junior High and North High School could not be happier being able to give back to where they came from. “We
are so proud to know we are helping the six schools we
attended in DPS. We want all students to believe they can
succeed and they can make a difference.”
Today in Schenck Elementary sits a computer lab with
Lola Salazar’s name on it. The “Lola Lit Lab” was dedicated
to Salazar in honor of the alumnus’ selfless donations and
serves as a reminder for students to thrive on a daily basis.
Today she still finds time to pursue other passions
in her life. Nicknamed “Sugar” by her parents because of
her love of candy as a child, Salazar decided it was time to
remember the sweet, simple pleasures of life. She says on
her website www.lolassugarrush.com, “Over the years, my
passion for candy and all things sweet have only increased.
So after a career in education, and raising a beautiful family,
I finally found the time to realize my sweet childhood dream
of owning a whimsical old-fashioned candy shop, elegantly
decorated and loaded with nostalgic candy, candy bars, hard
candies, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, cupcakes and gourmet desserts.” She looks forward to seeing adults take in the
memories of their childhood and innocence of their youth.
From business to education to delectable candy delights,
the Salazars have set an example for all within their community and beyond.

on Gateway High School’s Alejandra Cardona Lamas.
Now in her senior year, Cardona Lamas maintains
a 3.75 GPA and is looking forward to attending the
Colorado State University in Fort Collins or the
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs next fall.
She is heavily involved in several school organizations, which are not limited to the National Honor
Society, NHS; Student Council (senior class secretary); and Future Business Leaders of America, FBLA,
(secretary). Cardona Lamas, who works part-time, has
been named to the Honor Roll on several occasions.

during its lifetime. It also did nothing to prevent others from being ‘outed’ anonymously
by someone who simply suspected another
person’s sexual orientation.
“DADT was supposed to be progress,”
said Tammye Nash, Senior Editor of Texas
largest gay newspaper, The Dallas Voice. “In
some ways it was, but ultimately it didn’t
work,” she said.
During the nearly twenty years of DADT
as official policy, the military discharged
more than 14,000 personnel for being gay.
But over the course of DADT, more and more
military leaders came to acknowledge that
being gay had no impact on an individual’s
ability to perform their job or on unit cohesiveness.
Over the past several years, the Pentagon
has been preparing for the inevitable end
of DADT including polling the troops and
mandating sensitivity training. “Everybody
has been trained,” said Staff Sgt. Stonemetz.
“The policy has been explained,” and all Air
Force personnel know that anything less
than uniform compliance in conforming to
the end of DADT “would not be acceptable.”
While a number of key members of
Congress opposed the end of DADT on the
theory that it would disrupt troop morale,
military leaders up to and including members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff were ready
for the new era of zero tolerance. “I, and
the Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps, will personally lead this effort, thus ensuring the
respect and dignity due all Marines,” said
U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James
Amos in testimony before Congress.
Two weeks ago, an openly gay officer
or enlisted person could not wear their uniform in public. But at last Saturday’s Human
Rights Campaign fundraising dinner in
Washington, in which President Obama
spoke, the crowd was well represented with
gays in uniform representing each branch
of the military.
But at the Air Force Academy in
Colorado Springs, there continues to be a
chasm between the Academy and members
of the Blue Alliance, an organization of gay
and lesbian former Academy graduates.
A Veteran’s Day dinner to honor LGBT
Academy graduates that had been scheduled at the Association of Graduates on
the Academy grounds was forced to move.
According the Blue Alliance website, “The
AOG was unwilling to support the event on
the Academy if senior political leaders and
media outlets were invited” while DADT
was under discussion. “The Executive Vice
President of the AOG said the event was cancelled because it was intended to embarrass
the Air Force Academy,” said the website.
The Blue Alliance, whose members
have performed numerous Air Force duties,
including flying combat missions, denies
any desire to “embarrass” the Academy. But
it has nevertheless moved its Veterans Day
event to Denver.
Additionally, while the military’s new
policy on gay and lesbian troops officially bans discrimination, the Blue Alliance
strongly urges gay and lesbian Academy
nominees not to reveal their sexual orientation in the nominating process. Its website
warns that officers who have the prerogative
of advancing a nominee’s application “are
older and come from another era” and “may
not understand what it means to be gay or
lesbian in the 21st century.”
And the reticence at the Academy to
accommodate its gay and lesbian alumni
may not stop there. A quiet undercurrent
of suspicion about the military’s sincerity
to implement DADT may still exist among
some gay and lesbian troops. “Nobody is
quite yet willing to say anything,” said
Charles Irwin, of the Colorado Springs Pride
Center. Since the end of DADT, Irwin says
that to his knowledge no gay GI’s from any
of the five military facilities in Colorado
Springs have sought advice on DADT from
the Pride Center.
While the military says it plans no legal
action against gay or lesbians, Daily Voice
Editor Nash says it should prepare itself for
a few surprises over the coming months.
“People just don’t know it but we are everywhere,” she said. If the military or anyone
else thinks gays and lesbians fit stereotypical images, they might want to think again.
“The people who are the least likely to be

from the military for their sexual orientation are eligible for reenlistment. Some
have already begun the process. With nearly

Home equity loans are ideal for major

Home equity lines of credit can be the
right account for homeowners who want to
access their available credit over time during the account’s draw period. With a line,
you access available funds as needed and
you don’t pay interest on unused balances.
Remember, a line has a variable interest
rate so monthly payments can change.
