No longer is it either a shock
or surprise when a returning troop
or veteran is involved in a crime
in which one or multiple lives are
taken. Neither is it uncommon
when a soldier — often a war
zone veteran — takes his or her
own life. In fact, so common are
these painful episodes that they’re
often buried deep in a newspaper,
placed well below the lead story in
a television or radio newscast or
simply unreported.
But while these incidents
are alarming, what’s scarier is
that without a proactive effort
by the military, the Veterans
Administration or community care
agencies scattered across communities, these tragedies could grow
into something even worse.
PTSD, post-traumatic stress
disorder, first diagnosed in the
1980’s and applied to symptoms
experienced by Vietnam-era soldiers, is a condition that reflects
fear, helplessness, horror or
guilt. According to the Veterans
Administration, more than three-

instructors

The American Red Cross Mile High Chapter announced
that two new, bilingual volunteer instructors have joined its
staff, adding greater capacity to provide training in lifesaving skills for Colorado residents whose strongest language
is Spanish.
Libia Prada and Oliver Cunningham will co-teach their
first class on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The instructors were recruited in part to ensure that
businesses and schools participating in the Save A Life
Denver program have access to training resources that meet
the needs of their employees – including classes in Spanish.
Save a Life Denver is a public access defibrillation program that seeks to improve sudden cardiac arrest survival
rates by making Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
widely accessible to the public. The program’s goal is to
place a minimum of 1,000 AED devices throughout Denver
and train 10,000 individuals in Red Cross CPR/AED skills
annually.

CCD to break new ground
On Jan. 12, Community College of Denver (CCD) breaks
ground for the Student Learning and Engagement Building,
an 87,000 square foot, four story structure on the corner
of 7th St. and W. Colfax. Located in the CCD neighborhood
on the southwest side of the Auraria Campus, the “green”
building will be built on the current location of parking lot L
(Linden), just west of 9th Street Historic Park.
The Student Learning and Engagement Building will
be home to Admissions and Registration, Financial Aid, the
Testing Center, the cashier office, Academic Advising Center,
and the First Generation Student Success program. With
all these services in one convenient location, students will
be able to take advantage of a “one stop shop,” making the
process of enrolling in school and taking advantage of available programs easier on the students. The building will also
provide space for much needed additional classrooms, 14 in
all, a café, and a tutoring center.
College financial aid
As of January 1, 2012, students can begin to apply for
college financial assistance using the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is an important
step in the college planning process and families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible after the first of the year.

or more. The implementation of this policy will obligate
one-third of all service contracts at this time to undergo
a publicly advertised competitive process. It also requires
contracts through the City - whether it is for construction,
goods or services - to be re-bid every three to five years.

Fires continue: Twenty wildfires in
Chile continue to ravage thousands of acres
of Chile’s forestland. The fires killed a civilian and five fire fighters and forced hundreds to flee their homes. Israeli national
Rotem Singer is facing charges of starting
a fire in Torres del Paine National Park,
charges he denies.
Mexico deportations: Mexico deported more than 46,000 Central Americans
last year, reported the Mexican government agency National Migration Institute.
Thousands of Central Americans migrate
north to Mexico in an effort to make their
way toward the United States. Many of those
migrants have fallen victim to criminal
activity.
Trial begins for accused murderer:
Joran van der Sloot’s trial over the 2010
murder of Peruvian Stephany Flores, 21,
has begun. Van der Sloot has also been
considered the prime suspect in the 2005
disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba.
He will make his plea today.
Accidently deported: Jakadrien
Turner has arrived back in Dallas after she
was deported to Colombia last year. Turner,
who is African-American, allegedly gave
authorities a false identity of a Colombian
national after she was arrested for theft in
Houston. The fifteen-year-old originally ran
away from home prior to her deportation.
Breaking records: Mexico has garnered the title of the highest suspension
bridge of the world with its Baluarte Bridge.
The record-breaking bridge is located in
northern Mexico.
Ahmadinejad in Latin America:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
has traveled to Latin America where he
will visit Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua and
Venezuela. His first stop was Venezuela
where he and President Hugo Chavez joked
around about their friendly relationship,
remarks aimed at the United States.

the Iowa caucus last week and garnered
Sen. John McCain’s endorsement. Former
Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum came in
at a close second. Newt Gingrich, Texas Gov.
Rick Perry, Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman, who
did not participate in the caucus, continue
their candidacy. Rep. Michele Bachmann
announced she was leaving the race after a
disappointing showing in the polls. Next up

Bishop resigns: Los Angeles Catholic
Bishop Gabino Zavala resigned after he
announced that he fathered two children,
now in their teens.
Utah officer shooting: Matthew
Stewart was identified as the man who shot
six police officers, killing one. The shooting
happened in Ogden, Utah when officers
were trying to serve a warrant to search
for drugs. Steward is allegedly an Iraq War
veteran.
8th grader killed: Police officers in
Brownsville, Texas shot and killed 8th grade
student Jaime Gonzalez last week. It’s reported that Gonzalez assaulted a fellow student
and then preceded to brandish a weapon that
appeared to be a pistol, but which turned
out to be a pellet gun. According to police,
they continuously requested that Gonzalez
drop his weapon but refused. That’s when
officers opened fire. His family is seeking
answers.
U.S. job numbers: The Labor
Department reported the unemployment
rate went down to 8.5 percent.
In the Middle East
Iranian sailors rescued: U.S. sailors
aboard the USS Kidd rescued 13 Iranian
sailors held captive by pirates in the Arabian
Sea. The vessel, Al Molai, had been taken
hostage since November. The pirates were
taken to the USS Stennis.
Sentenced to death: An Iranian
court sentenced Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, an
American citizen and former U.S. Marine, to
death for espionage. Hekmati was accused
of working for the CIA. The United States
has demanded his release.

Early in my pre-Columbian
Peruvian adventure with students
I learned that although corn is a
popular staple of the national diet it
is not native to the country. Rather,
its original seeds were acquired
from trading partners in Mayan
Central America during the time of
the ancient empires that pre-date
the Incas.
After bringing corn to the

region, scientists went to work
to create hundreds of varieties in
order to adapt it to the Andean world that challenged successful planting and harvesting. I have enjoyed the bowls of
corn called “choclo” that can be eaten by itself or as part of
a meal.
Now the world has gone back to the pre-Columbian
Mayan civilization again to borrow a calendar round that
is marking the last days of a Great Age that has its origins
over 5,000 years ago. The Mayan calendar is a mathematical driven instrument that can compute its way to both our
distant past and future.
Yet it is not the genius in the construction of a long
count that identifies the five ages of the Mayan ancient
world that is drawing the current attention of the world, but
rather the idea that the current calendar cycle is scheduled
to end on Dec. 21, 2012. Evidently, there are folks that are
not satisfied to let the fifth Mayan age end without assigning it some kind of violent upheaval that spells the end of
the world.
It seems that Revelations, the last book in the Bible
that depicts the promise of a chaotic end to the world is not
enough for those overwhelmed by our current ills. In this
context, we find that we need to atone for our sinful nature
by destroying ourselves with fire and brimstone to purify the
world for another go at being human.
Actually in my judgment, the Book of Revelations can
only be considered a metaphor for the punishment of sins
in our world today. The reality is that the projection of
monsters and superior being threatening and destroying
the world speaks more to a decadent Roman Empire and
the desired punishment for its treatment of early Christians.
To be sure, apocalyptic visions associated with the end
of a world are very real and we need to go no farther than
the Aztec Empire’s vision of its end to see how a prophecy
became a belief and then a reality played out by Spanish conquest and colonization. In this case, the reality of apocalyptic
torment in the end was at the hands of other human beings
that did not recognize their right to exist.
The Mayan Long Count has reached a telling moment in
measuring the end of its 5th age. The numbers however, do
not speak to some kind of apocalyptic vision of violence and
destruction, as some would interpret.
Rather, the ages associated with the Long Count are
related more to the Mayan study of the night skies and
astronomical learning. This learning included accounting
for the constellations in much the same way as astrology
that assigns values to constellations included in its charts.
The Mayan determined that a constellation that
appeared on the horizon of the night sky was there for
some 2,600 years before being replaced by another. Their
calculations determined that the appearance of two of these
constellations could be the basis for constructing a calendar
round of 5,200 years.
It is not surprising that Dec. 21, 2012 is consistent with
the passing of the Constellation Pisces and the coming of
the Constellation Aquarius. It is not the end of the world.

un producto popular de la dieta nacional, no es nativo del
país. En realidad las semillas originales se adquirieron de
comerciantes asociados en el Centro América maya en el
tiempo de los imperios antiguos que anteceden a los incas.
Después de traer el maíz a la región, los científicos
comenzaron a trabajar para crear cientos de variedades con
el fin de adaptarlo al mundo andino que creaba problemas
en la siembra y en la cosecha. Yo he disfrutado los platos de
maíz llamados “choclo” que se pueden comer solos o como
parte de un plato completo.
Ahora el mundo se ha devuelto a la civilización precolombina y maya para prestar un calendario redondo que
marca los últimos días de una Gran Época y que tiene
sus orígenes en más de 5 mil años. El calendario maya es
un instrumento matemático que puede computar nuestro
pasado más antiguo y también el futuro.
Sin embargo no es el genio de la construcción de una
cuenta larga la que identifica cinco eras del mundo maya
antiguo lo que llama la atención del mundo, sino la idea
de que el ciclo actual del calendario debe terminar el 21 de
diciembre del 2012. Evidentemente, hay gente que no está
satisfecha con dejar que la 5a era maya termine sin asignarle un cataclismo violento que define el final del mundo.
Parece que en Revelaciones, el último libro de la Biblia
describe la promesa de un final del mundo caótico no es suficiente para los que están abrumados por nuestra situación
actual. En este contexto, nosotros descubrimos que necesitamos expiar nuestra naturaleza pecadora destruyéndonos a
nosotros mismos con fuego y azufre para purificar el mundo
para hacer otra prueba de seres humanos.
Actualmente y en mi juicio, el libro de las Revelaciones
solamente puede ser considerado una metáfora para el
castigo en nuestro mundo de hoy. La realidad es que la
proyección de monstruos y seres superiores que amenazan
y destruyen el mundo hablan más de un Imperio Romano
decadente y el castigo deseado por su tratamiento de los
primeros cristianos.
Para estar seguros, las visiones apocalípticas asociadas
al final del mundo son muy reales y no tenemos que ir más
lejos de la visión del Imperio Azteca de su final para ver
como una profecía se convirtió en una creencia y luego en
una realidad demostrada por la conquista y colonización
española. En este caso, la realidad de un tormento apocalíptico al final estaba en las manos de otros seres humanos que
no reconocían su derecho de existir.
La Larga Cuenta Maya ha llegado al momento definitivo

Rodeo Hall of Famer Jerry Diaz leads charro tradition

celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday,
and, of course, the annual Stock Show, a timehonored tradition for more than a century.
The 106th National Western Stock Show
(Jan. 7-22) opened last week and showcases
one of the most popular Mexican rodeos in
the country. And for nearly 20 years the NWSS
has featured the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza
presented by Gerardo “Jerry” Diaz, a fourthgeneration Mexican-American charro, known
worldwide for his rodeo skills.
Last weekend, Diaz hosted the 18th annual Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza. Presented
by Univision, Tricolore and Pepsi, the event
featured Diaz and performances by Charros
El Centenario, Charros Del Bajio, Charros
Division del Norte, Charros Las Delicias and
the side-saddle team of Las Amazonas de
Colorado directed by Naiomy Torrez. This
year’s bullfighting show included Mexican
Bullfighters Paco Muñoz and Alberto Gutierrez
Hernandez displaying the art of the cape and bull. As with all
his shows Diaz dresses in traditional charro attire and performs precision roping maneuvers with his horses’ skills in
dancing, tricks, dressage and reining while mariachi music
plays in the background.
As a director and lifetime member of the National
Western Diaz of course has a stake in its continued success,
but the charro tradition runs deep in his family and is a way
of life, he said. The charro term belongs to a specialized
form of horsemanship, rope artistry and handling horses
and cattle in competition derived over centuries from the
earliest Spaniard and Mexican cowboy traditions.
Diaz’s father, Jose “Pepe” Diaz from Guadalajara,
San Antonio) where they train horses to dance
and trick as well as reining and dressage for
their performances nationwide. Only the finest horses are trained to dance in specialized
movements such as side pass, Spanish walk
and pirouettes. Among the highlights of the
Mexican Rodeo is one of Diaz’s trademark rope
tricks: using a 65-foot rope around one of his
stallions while in a full gallop around the arena.
“It’s a very beautiful program,” he says
enthusiastically. “The Mexican rodeo show
has become very popular because of the color,
flair and history. People call me from all over
the country to perform.”
The list of his awards would extend from
here to San Antonio. Just a year ago this
month, he was inducted into the Texas Cowboy
Hall of Fame. And in 2004, he was inducted to
the Texas Trail of Fame. But the honor closest
to his heart is being invited to perform at the
1996
Atlanta Summer Olympics.

Remembering an old friend Recordando un viejo amigo

St. and many in local television remember
those good ‘ole days.
A few short years later and carrying my
first child, all seven males and one female
co-workers were supportive and protective.
That summer, I chose to take maternity
leave early and the predominant male group
planned a baby shower on my last day at the
station. It was a rare and unusual scenario,
a young Latina opening baby gifts in the
midst of major flowing testosterone. An
offbeat setting indeed, but heartfelt and sincere nonetheless. It was hard to say goodbye
that last day.
Connie said goodbye, left his office after
the baby shower and no more than five minutes later, a station employee came up to tell
us that Connie had experienced a heart attack
as he was driving out of the parking lot. He
drove into the nearest parking lot across the
street and died. An extremely sad ending to an
important milestone in my own life and the
end of a very short life for a man loved by all.
However sad the day played out, my life
was shaped by those early times at KMGHTV and Connie. It was not about a title, status or salary for this impressionable young
woman. It was about positive people contributing to my life through life experiences.
Connie was one of the nicest people one can
know. An imperfect human like all of us, yet
he had so much to offer, but died young. The
overflow of people at his memorial service
was indicative of the mark he left on people.
I think of you often and fondly, Connie
Metro.

porque permeaba sinceridad. Por profesión,
un representante de ventas de la televisión,
él tenía años de experiencia en la TV que
amaba a la gente en general y la gente le
devolvía el favor. Esa combinación lo hizo
uno de los mejores vendedores del equipo y
en los medios de propaganda de Denver.
Connie me recordaba de Rodney
Dangerfield y con frecuencia yo compartía

itself since their ages ranged from mid twenties to near retirement. Other than myself, one
other woman was part of that team.
A different personality offered a daily
dose of challenges for the group. Every one
of these males in a then male-oriented
profession left an impression on a young
woman. The most impressive male hands
down was “Connie,” short for Constantine.
That’s right — Connie, a wonderfully bighearted Greek soul who was my protector.
Connie was loved by all because he exuded
sincerity. A television ad sales rep by profession, he had years of TV sales experience,
loved people in general and people loved him
in return. That combination made him one
of the top sales people on that team and in
Denver advertising media.
Connie reminded me of Rodney
Dangerfield and I often shared that with
him and it made him smile. He was a cool,
fifty something gentleman who owned a ‘72
Oldsmobile 442, a heavy smoker who loved
and lived his life fully. He had many a fun

Connie dijo adiós, salió de su oficina
después de la reunión y no habían pasado
cinco minutos cuando un empleado de la
estación vino y nos dijo que Connie había
tenido un ataque del corazón cuando salía
del estacionamiento. El fue hasta el siguiente
estacionamiento al otro lado de la calle y murió.
Un final extremadamente triste para un punto
fundamental de mi vida y el fin de una corta
vida para un hombre amado por todos.
Así de mal terminó ese día, mi vida fue

o salario para esta jovencita impresionable.
Fue una contribución positiva de gene en
mi vida por medio de experiencias de la

thousand troops or combat veterans a month are seeking
PTSD treatment. And while the demand is challenging some
VA facilities, Colorado’s vets and returning troops seem to be
faring better than many others.
“We have several robust treatment programs,” says
Jordan Schupbach, spokesman for the VA’s Eastern Colorado
Health Care System. The program for vets, which has
evolved over the last three to five years, is “fairly unique,”
he said.
Those selected for one particularly successful program
spend between six and eight weeks at Denver’s VA hospital
where they’re treated in group or individual settings. But
while Schupbach describes the program as “wildly successful,” it doesn’t include spaces for women, including
those who’ve returned from combat situations in Iraq or
Afghanistan with PTSD symptoms. Instead, they are sent
to “other programs, including community care,” Schupbach
said.
While their numbers don’t come near those of men
seeking post-military health care assistance from the VA,
women returning from war, in increasing numbers, are also
seeking help from the VA for PTSD and other health related
issues. What some are finding is that the VA is not entirely
equipped to handle their problems.
“They have the cream of the crop people there for most
men’s health issues,” said Maria (not her real name). “But
they don’t always have someone there to deal with female
health issues, OB/GYN or rape,” she said.
The VA is aware of this hole in its safety net and has
tried to be proactive in dealing with the myriad of issues
unique to the women returning from war along with other
women veterans. “We recognized the growing trend,” he
said. “And we are keeping on top of the numbers.”
Maria is an electrician who served as a firefighter in
the Navy. But now, because of a soft economy, works only
sporadically. While working mostly steadily since her Navy
days, there have been some dry spells and some unimaginably challenging times, including the one she’s in today.
A few years ago, when Las Vegas was booming, she
moved there and found work. But not long after, the city’s
economy bottomed out. Foreclosures and vacancies skyrocketed; jobs nosedived. Work that was once plentiful dried up.
Jobless, she returned to Denver.
But, things here weren’t much better. In no time, she
found herself homeless and living in what she describes
as a “derelict barn” in rural Jefferson County. At “rock bottom,” her only possessions were her truck, dog and a tiny
refrigerator that she ran from pirated electricity from nearby
power lines. “I just squatted there,” she said. But at least it
was safe, if you overlook the coyotes that seemed omnipresent and ready to scavenge or, if the opportunity was right,
eat her dog.
Homeless, but otherwise healthy, Maria found some
help in her VA visits, including those to treat her dietcontrolled diabetes. But while on one visit, she learned from
a VA employee about Carol Lease and the Empowerment
Program.
In business for nearly three decades, Empowerment
is a non-profit resource for women dealing with panoply
of issues, including drug and alcohol dependency, mental
health issues, job training and placement. It also helps veterans, including those with some forms of PTSD.
Located near downtown and run by executive director
Carol Lease, Empowerment is a lifeline for hundreds of
women, including vets, every year. “When they get out (of
the military), women are more likely to get lower paying jobs
than men,” she says. “Men can do construction or physical
work,” says Lease. “They’re often more adaptable.”
Empowerment focuses on four key areas as it tries to
return clients back into a normal life. It makes sure they
regain good health by getting them into programs designed
to wean them from addictions. It provides temporary housing and opportunities to learn skills that are marketable. And
it tries to place clients when they’re prepared to reenter the
workforce. “We try to help them find their own power, find
their own lives,” said Lease.
What Empowerment has done for Maria is given her
shelter, a place where she can sleep without fear of freezing
or fending off predators. It allows her to go on job interviews
in clean clothes and with the confidence of knowing that
even if she doesn’t land the job that she’ll still have a place
to come home to. But it’s only temporary.
Two wars that have consumed much of the last decade
have wrought physical challenges that now rest squarely
on the shoulders of America’s fighting force. These wars
have also created an unintended fiscal consequence for the
government that sent them to war. Combined, it is a weight
that will only continue to grow as thousands more young
men and women return from the fight. Many will return with
lifelong and visible physical wounds. Others will come home
with wounds invisible but painful in a different way.
The long term costs of treating the nearly 50,000 wounded in two long-term wars can only be estimated. The cost for
treating the emotionally scarred from these wars can also
only be guessed. But with thousands yet to return from the
still on-going conflict — many after multiple deployments —
it is an estimate that will certainly be refigured and, perhaps,
for generations to come.

For some time now Denver’s success
has been written off as a fluke, divine intervention or pure luck. Oddly enough Denver
was in the hunt for Luck, Andrew that is,
the bright young star groomed by the same
school Denver’s beloved John Elway attended.
It’s easy to make a case about a team’s
luck in the regular season, but last Sunday
things became a little more complicated
in post season, especially when you add
a “Superb” Bowl caliber team like the
Pittsburgh Steelers who undoubtedly had

Many believed that Denver would
have difficulty running the ball against
Pittsburgh’s defensive line, but running
the ball, the one dimension Denver has
stayed true to in recent weeks took a back

Steelers “D” was so ferocious that they managed to give up only six passing plays of 30
yards or more … five of those came at the
hands of the unlikely Tebow.
Critics have continued to harp on the
mechanics of Tebow’s throwing ability and
he has been the butt of jokes around the
league after having one of his worst performing games in his entire football career
in the closing game against the Kansas City
Chiefs last week. Tebow did what he knows
best during wild card weekend in Denver …

The AFC Divisional Playoff match-up
between the Denver Broncos and the New
England Patriots takes place in Gillette
Stadium at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The championship game will air on KCNC,
(Channel 4) the CBS affiliate.

has been hired by New England as their
offensive coordinator.

Colorado Health Care System del VA (por sus siglas en
inglés). El programa para veteranos, que se ha desarrollado

María es una electricista que fue bombera en la Marina.

ella se devolvió a Denver.
Pero, las cosas aquí no eran mucho mejor. Al poco
tiempo ella se encontró sin casa y viviendo en lo que ella
llama un “granero abandonado” en las afueras del Condado
de Jefferson. Ya “en el fondo”, sus únicas posesiones eran
su camión, su perro y un pequeño refrigerador que ella

estas guerras solamente puede ser adivinado. Pero con
miles que todavía no han vuelto, esto puede ser un conflicto

Texas (cerca al noreste de San Antonio) en
donde ellos entrenan a los caballos para el
baile y trucos especiales los mismos que
dirigiéndolos con riendas y los vestidos para
sus presentaciones en la nación. Solamente
los mejores caballos son entrenados para
bailar con movimientos especiales como el
paso lateral, el caminado español y otras
piruetas. Entre las especialidades del Rodeo
Mexicano esta uno de los trucos con la reata
que son la especialidad de Díaz: usando una
reata de 65-pies en uno de sus alazanes
cuando está galopando velozmente por la
arena.
“Es un hermoso programa”, dice él con
entusiasmo. “el espectáculo del rodeo mexicano se ha vuelto muy popular debido al
color, gracia e historia. La gente me llama de
todo el país para que me presente”.
La lista de sus premios se extendería
desde aquí a San Antonio. Hace apenas un
año, y en este mes, el fue inducido al Salón
de la Fama de los Vaqueros de Texas. Y en
el 2004, el fue inducido al Salón de la Fama
de los Caminos de Texas. Pero el honor
que está más cerca a su corazón es haber
sido invitado a presentarse en los Juegos
Olímpicos del Verano en Atlanta en 1996.
Díaz ha viajado por todo el país desde
el Circuito Profesional del Rodeo hasta la
Reunión Económica de líderes mundiales.
En Mayo el estará viajando al extranjero,
a Londres, para presentarse en el Jubileo
de Diamante de la reina de Inglaterra, que
celebra los 60 años del reinado de la Reina
Isabel II, programada para Junio del 2 al 5.
“Es un gran honor”, dijo él. “Habrá 15
cabezas de caballo con representantes de
todo el mundo, y estoy muy orgulloso de
representar la tradición charra de México”.
Para los vaqueros y los vivos de la
ciudad, la audiencia de la feria ganadera
de Denver ha admirado siempre el arte,
talento, técnica y pasión de esta tradición
hispana de siglos de equitación y habilidad.

Prevent flu from spreading at home
1. Wash your hands regularly in warm
soapy water. For quick clean-up, use antibacterial hand sanitizer. Make an effort not
to touch your mouth or nose without first
washing your hands.
2. Wear rubber gloves when cleaning
household items to protect yourself. By
wearing gloves, you will be less likely to
touch your eyes, nose or mouth, which are
havens for the flu virus.
3. Spray disinfecting spray on a cloth,
wipe toys, doorknobs, appliance handles,
keyboards, remote controls, light switches, phones and facial tissue box covers.
Viruses can live up to 48 hours on hard
surfaces.
4. Wash items like towels and bedding in hot water with soap if someone
has been sick in the home. Be sure not to
share these items until they are thoroughly
cleaned.
5. Change vacuum bags monthly or
more frequently.
6. Boil toothbrushes for one minute
in water and vinegar, run through a dishwasher cycle or purchase new brushes.
7. Use antibacterial wipes on your keyboard, phone and pens to protect yourself
from spreading germs at work.
8. Wash telephones, cabinet handles,
doorknobs, light switches and refrigerator
door handles using a slightly dampened
cloth with a solution of mild detergent and
warm water.
9. Wash mop heads in a solution of ¼
cup bleach and one gallon water, dry thoroughly, then store. Not only will mop heads
pick up germs and dirt, but they also can
also grow mold and mildew if they don’t dry
out completely.
10. Disinfect the bathroom and kitchen,
especially the faucet and toilet handles,
daily. The kitchen and bathroom are the
most used rooms in the home and possibly
the most contaminated.
