Cinco across the nation
ERNEST GURULÉ
It is, even by the most generous characterization, a relatively
modest event in Mexico. But in
Colorado and a growing number of
places across the nation, Cinco de
Mayo has grown into what may be
one of the most anticipated sunny
weather celebrations of the year.
Cinco de Mayo, which is often
confused with another famous
date on the Mexican calendar,
September 16, marks the anniversary of the 1862 Battle of Puebla. In
that battle, an outnumbered, overmatched Mexican army beat back
an assault by a superior French
force in Puebla, Mexico.
The battle would not, however,
be an end to the French occupation
of Mexico. But it did serve as a
critical moment in Mexico’s history
and galvanized the nation’s resolve
to ultimately drive the French from
the country.
Today, Cinco de Mayo celebrations have gone nationwide, thanks
in part to the amazingly successful

Cinco de Mayo ha crecido en lo que

asoleado en el año.
El Cinco de Mayo, que con
frecuencia se confunde con otro
día famoso del calendario mexicano, el 16 de septiembre, marca el
aniversario de la Batalla de Puebla
en 1862. En esa batalla, un ejército
sobrepasado en número, y en técnica le ganó a una fuerza francesa
superior en Puebla, México.
La batalla, sin embargo, no
sería el final de la ocupación francesa de México. Pero si sirvió como
un momento crítico en la historia
de México y galvanizó la resolución
de la nación para sacar definitivamente los franceses del país.

Cinco de Mayo parade back on Municipal election results

The popular Cinco de Mayo parade
returns this year.
Every year, thanks to NEWSED
Community Development Corporation,
Denver has played host to one of the largest Cinco de Mayo festivities in the country.
With over 400,000 people in attendance, the
annual event provides a cultural flare that
families have come to enjoy. Guests at the
event can appreciate the food, music and
activities at the two-day event that provides
an inviting atmosphere to not only Latino
families, but the entire Denver community.
This year, families will be able to see
the Cinco de Mayo parade roll through
downtown, which was originally produced
by a media outlet that after a merger was no
longer able to keep producing it. The parade
returns this year thanks to “community
demand,” said Andrea Barela, development
director at NEWSED. “This year we had
some volunteers step up and get it produced,”
she said. The parade will make its way
around downtown Denver where the Cinco
de Mayo festivities are held at Civic Center
Park. The parade will start at 10 a.m. off
Colfax and Fox St. and will end at Lincoln St.
“(The parade) features all the different
amenities that are a part of the event itself,”
Barela said. “For instance all of our great
sponsors, great exhibitors, a lot of the entertainment, dancers and the musicians are in
the parade. What makes Cinco de Mayo most
memorable is what is featured,” she said.
The event will also feature a variety of
other things that families can look forward
to like the Green Chile Cookout and a children’s carnival among other activities. A
Mother’s Day mass will also be held at 10
a.m. on Sunday, May 8.
Barela said that this weekend’s
event will provide a great “staycation” for
Denverites and not only a safe family environment, but also affordability. “Come and
have a good time and bring your mom to the
event,” Barela said.

El desfile popular del Cinco de Mayo
vuelve este año.
Todos los años, gracias a NEWSED
Community Development Corporation,
Denver ha sido anfitrion de una de las
festividades más grandes del Cinco de Mayo
en el país. Con la asistencia de más de
400 mil personas, el evento anual provee
un brillo cultural que las familias vienen a
disfrutar. Los huéspedes del evento pueden
apreciar la comida, la música, y las actividades del evento de dos días que provee una

gracias a la “petición de la comunidad”, dijo

NEWSED. “Este año nosotros tuvimos algunos voluntarios que se alistaron y lograron
producirlo”, dijo ella. El desfile pasara por el
centro de Denver en donde se presentan las
festividades del Cinco de Mayo en el Civic
Center Park. El desfile comenzará a las 10
am en la Colfax con Fox St. y terminara en
la Lincoln St.
“(El desfile) tiene todas los diferentes atractivos que son parte del evento
mismo”, dijo Barela. “Por ejemplo todos
nuestros grandes patrocinadores, grandes
exhibidores, mucha diversión, bailes y los
músicos están en el desfile. Lo que hace al
Cinco de Mayo más memorable es lo que se
presenta”, dijo ella.
El evento también tendrá una variedad
de otras cosas que la familia podrá disfrutar
como Cocinar el Chile Verde, y un carnaval
para los niños entre otras actividades. Una
misa para el Día de la Madre también tendrá
lugar a las 10 am el domingo 8 de mayo.
Barela dijo que el evento de este fin de
semana proveerá una gran “estación” para
los denveritas y no solo en un ambiente tranquilo para la familia, sino también asequible
a la bolsa. “Vengan y disfruten y traigan a su
mama a este evento”, dijo Barela.

Mayor’s race
This year’s major political race involved
the Denver mayor seat. The ballot originally
included 10 candidates, but after councilwoman Carol Boigon dropped-out of the
race, it left the seat open for nine other
candidates.

June’s runoff election are former state
senator Chris Romer and city councilman
Michael Hancock.
City Council
Denver voters also had to decide who
would represent them on the City Council.
In this year’s City Council election, five candidates ran unopposed for their seat. Before
Carla Madison’s death in early April, she too

Denver voters had the opportunity to make their vote
count in the May 3 Denver Municipal General Election. The
offices open for election were Denver Mayor, City Council,
Auditor and Clerk and Recorder.

The Colorado Senate unanimously confirmed Lt. Gov.
Joseph A. Garcia as the Executive Director of the Department
of Higher Education.
Garcia takes on the responsibility of leading the
Department of Higher Education in addition to his role as

Community Cleanup Day
Online registration is now available for the ninth
annual Community Cleanup Day, which will be held from
8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. The event provides
volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups to help
clean up a variety of parks, greenways, creeks and paths
throughout the city.

Metro postpones name change
Metropolitan State College of Denver’s Board of Trustees
voted unanimously to defer until 2012 its efforts to secure
legislative authority to change the College’s name to Denver
State University.

Martinez accepts post
City and County Manager George Di Ciero has
announced that Ralph “Bo” Martinez will take the reins of
the city’s in-house economic development effort on May 18.
Martinez will work from the Manager’s Office to pursue new
commercial, retail, business relocations and research and
development entities and solidify Broomfield’s economic
base for jobs and economic stability now and for the future,
Di Ciero said.
Latina Threlkeld Prize recipient
A scholar-athlete who has excelled both on the field and
in the classroom has been named the 2011 recipient of the
Threlkeld Prize for Excellence. As the Threlkeld recipient,
Bonita Nuanez will receive the first diploma of the ceremony when she graduates with a major in biology, minor
in chemistry and a pre-med emphasis on Saturday, May 7 at
the Colorado State Fair Events Center. She will be the first
in her family to graduate from college.

all the basics: a pharmacy, floral
department, bakery and deli, but this King Soopers will cater
a little more towards its area cultural demographic. It boasts
a panaderia and tortilleria.
The grand opening took place on Wednesday, April 27
and began with a cake cutting at 9 a.m. The Colorado Rapids
Players, face painting and balloon animals were available at
the event. This was the opening of not only a grocery store,
but a community treasure that nourishes the ones around
you.

addressed the nation to announce that al-Qaeda leader
Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. armed forces in
a secretive operation. He remained at the top of America’s
most wanted list after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Mayor Guillermo (Bill) V. Vidal and Superintendent
Tom Boasberg gathered with Denver Public School parents,
teachers, and principals on Friday, April 29 to honor 313
students as Mile High Scholars.
Since 1996, the City and County of Denver has honored Denver Public School students through the Mile High
Scholars program. Students are selected by the principal
and faculty of their schools for modeling good leadership;
respect for self, others and the environment; and for supporting their peers. The number of students selected from each
school is determined by the school’s enrollment.
2011 Daniels Scholars
Two hundred sixty-seven high school seniors have been
named Daniels Scholars and will receive funding to attend
the college or university of their choice.
The group of new Daniels Scholars includes approximately 184 from Colorado, 43 from New Mexico, 16 from

more plastics for recycling. The city will expand its list of acceptable plastics to include rigid plastic bottles, jugs, jars, cups, trays,
tubs and containers marked with a number 1 through 7.

A week in review
Osama bin Laden dead
President Barack Obama announced in
an address to the nation on Sunday night the
death of al Qaeda leader and founder Osama
bin Laden. U.S. special forces killed bin
laden in a secretive operation in Abbottabad,
Pakistan, in a compound just miles away
from the capitol Islamabad. Military officials
followed Islamic law for the funeral proceedings. The Department of Defense stated that
bin Laden was given a burial at sea because
no country offered their land. The U.S. State
Department is on alert for any possible retribution for the death of bin Laden.
In Asia
Reignited tension: For over a week,
forces from Cambodia and Thailand have
exchanged fire across the border. Latest
reports indicate that the situation is easing
after a truce was reached on April 28.
In Europe
Path to Sainthood: The late Pope John
Paul II was beatified on Sunday, May 1 in
a ceremony at the Vatican. Many Catholic
faithful congregated at St. Peter’s Square to
witness the event.
Royal wedding: Hundreds of millions
of people worldwide watched Prince William
and Kate Middleton wed last Friday at
Westminster Abbey. It was announced that
the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will
delay their honeymoon.

Extradited: Drug lord Benjamin
Arellano Felix was extradited to the United
States from Mexico on charges of money
laundering and for his involvement with the
Arellano Felix cartel run by his family from
Tijuana.
More bodies found: Mexican authorities announced that they have found a total
of 104 bodies in Durango, Mexico. One hundred eighty-three bodies have been found in
the state of Tamaulipas.

Tragedy across the south: Last week,
more than 200 tornadoes devastated six
states in southern United States causing the
death of over 340 people.

Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day come together
Cinco de Mayo
and Mother’s Day
have never really
been apart from one
another; in Mexico
they’ve always been
five days apart. In
the United States,
the practice of celebrating holidays
by taking advantage

of weekends has
resulted in the two dates normally being
celebrated in different weeks.
Not so this year because although May
5 and May 10 come in different weeks, this
time around they meet on Sunday the 8. It is
as though the Cinco de Mayo battle and its
consequences come face to face.
It is true that the May 5 battle on
the Puebla plain in 1862 was a victory for
the Mexican government under President
Benito Juárez and a defeat for the invading
French army. It was also however, a place
of death and a killing field that consecrated
the ground for both the victor and the vanquished that day.
Mother’s Day came five days later to
find a nation at war with another country
as well as with itself. The agony of losing a
loved one in war was part of the experience
that included Cinco de Mayo.
No one has felt the loss of loved ones in
war and people’s inhumanity to other people
more than the mothers of the world. The
notion of the “suffering mother” and even
the concept of “La Llorona” in Mexico are
largely based on the aspects of the human
condition created by the devaluing of life
especially of young people.
I have thought for some time that
the Chicano Movement borrowing Cinco
de Mayo from Mexican history has run its
course. It seems that so much of what we
do on the holiday anymore is to celebrate
without thinking very much about its meaning as a catalyst for standing up for justice.
We need to assess the direction of the
Cinco de Mayo celebrations with an eye
to reintegrate its original purpose. This is
needed more than ever especially given the
intentional abuse and discrimination of the
Latino immigrant community.
The irony is that the majority of the
immigrants suffering the deliberate attacks
legal and otherwise by the American political power structure in several parts of the
country are Mexicans, the very people who
own Cinco de Mayo. It seems to me that
Cinco de Mayo dressed in white t-shirts to
send a message of perseverance in the face
of injustice would be much more significant
as a vehicle for change than what is becoming a beer festival.
I remember my mother watching the
progress of our work and trying to understand the meaning of the actions to pressure
change. She never failed to get up from
bed and talk to me and even feed me in the
middle of the night.
Later in my career, I honored my mother’s steadfastness by inviting her to be part
of our study abroad groups that visited
pre-Colombian sites in Mexico where we
learned together the value of a unique history written in stone. These extraordinary
memories that she took to the grave are
also mine.
One of these memories involved a
stay in Catemaco in southern Veracruz.
Catemaco holds the last vestiges of preColombian Mesoamerica’s religion, which
was important to our study.
However, my mother noticed an avocado tree with ripe fruit ready for eating.
She then got busy making delicious avocado
tacos and religion became a secondary issue.
I miss her and will be celebrating her life
again as part of our Cinco de Mayo festivities. My mother and Cinco de Mayo will
come together for me this coming weekend.

Y esto no se hace en este año, porque
aun cuando el Cinco de Mayo y el 10 de
Mayo vienen en semanas diferentes, esta
vez ellos se juntan el 8 de Mayo. Es como
si la batalla del Cinco de Mayo y sus consecuencias se vieran frente a frente.
Es cierto que la batalla del 5 de Mayo
en las planicies de Puebla en 1862 fue
una victoria del gobierno mexicano bajo la
dirección del presidente Benito Juárez y
la derrota del ejército invasor francés. Fue
también sin embargo, un lugar de muerte y
el campo de batalla que consagró el terreno
para los victoriosos y los perdedores ese día.
El día de la Madre vino cinco días
después para encontrar una nación en guerra contra otro país, y contra sí misma. La
agonía de perder un ser querido en la guerra
fue parte de la experiencia que incluía el
Cinco de Mayo.
Nadie ha sentido la pérdida de seres
queridos en la guerra y la falta de humanidad de la gente con otros como las madres
del mundo. La idea de la “madre dolorosa” y
aun el concepto de “La Llorona” en México
son basados en aspectos de la condición
humana creada por la devaluación de la vida
especialmente de los jóvenes.
Yo he pensado por cierto tiempo que el
Movimiento Chicano ha tomando el Cinco
de Mayo de la historia Mexicana ya ha
terminado su curso. Parece que mucho de
lo que hacemos en este día de fiesta es
más una celebración sin pensar sobre su
significado como catalizador que representa
la justicia.
Nosotros debemos estudiar la dirección
de las fiestas del Cinco de Mayo con la idea
de reintegrar su propósito original. Esto se
necesita ahora más que nunca especialmente si se piensa en el abuso intencional
y la discriminación de la comunidad inmigrante latina.
La ironía es que la mayoría de los inmigrantes que sufren los ataques deliberados
ya sean legales o de otra forma por la estructura de poder política americana en varias
partes del país son mexicanos, la gente que
es dueña del Cinco de Mayo. Me parece que
el Cinco de Mayo arropado con camisetas
blancas para mandar un mensaje de perseverancia al frente de la injusticia sería
mucho más significativo como vehículo de
cambio de lo que se está convirtiendo en un
festival de la cerveza.
Yo me acuerdo de mi madre observando
el progreso de nuestro trabajo y tratando de
comprender el significado de las acciones
para imponer cambios. Ella nunca dejó de
levantarse de la cama y conversar conmigo
y aun darme comida a medianoche.
Más tarde en mi carrera, yo honré la
fortaleza de mi madre al invitarla a ser parte
de nuestros grupos de estudiar afuera del
país y que visitaban sitios precolombinos en
México en donde aprendíamos a valorar la
historia única que estaba escrita en piedra.
Estos recuerdos extraordinarios que ella se
llevó a su tumba también son míos.
Uno de estos recuerdos incluía una
estadía en Catemaco en el sur de Veracruz.
Catemaco tiene los últimos vestigios de la
religión precolombina de Mesoamérica, que
era muy importante en nuestros estudios.
Sin embargo, mi madre notó un árbol
de aguacate con fruta madura lista para
comer. Ella se ocupó entonces en hacer
tacos deliciosos de aguacate y la religión
se convirtió en una cosa secundaria. La
extraño mucho y estaré celebrando su vida
de nuevo como parte de las festividades del
Cinco de Mayo. Mi madre y el Cinco de Mayo
se juntaran para mí en este fin de semana
que se aproxima.

Last week in La Vida Latina we
learned about the many different
meanings of the word chero. From
positive, to harmless, to offensive,
the word evokes emotion on all sides.
The one thing that was decided on in
terms of what image the word chero
calls to mind, is that of a cowboy.
Vaqueros, a Stetson hat, big belts,
pointy boots and western shirts. To

the word chero simply refers to a way
of dress. “A chero is a clothing style. It
usually means men and boys who dress with a Stetson (called a
tejana), cowboy boots and any mix of jeans and button up shirts.
I think nowadays, in the younger crowd this term is thrown
around to describe the style,” he said.
The culture of a chero is also commonly described as
being traditional, from the old country, a ranchero or person
who farms for a living. Dr. Adriana Nieto, Assistant Professor
in the Chicana/o Studies Department at The Metropolitan
State College of Denver describes the regional history.
“I have always thought it was a shortened way of referring to people from the northern regions of Mexico such
as Chihuahua, Zacatecas, who come from the tradition of
ranching. It has become a term that refers to someone who
seems to be rural, or ‘country,’” she said.
In Colorado specifically, the word “cheddar” has been
adopted as the shortened version of the word chero. In terms
of music, a “cheddar” is said to listen to polka. The term “cheddar” is described by the Double-Tongued Dictionary under
Colorado Slang as “a newly arrived immigrant who sprinkles
cheese on their food or receives government cheese.”
“¡Ask a Mexican!” critic, Gustavo Arellano describes
these terms in his 2010 article, “Queso confundido: Cheddars
in Denver, brazers in Chicago:

Arrellano wrote, “Cheddar” in the context you heard
it has nothing to do with the sabrosísimo cheese, but is
rather the Denver way to call a Mexican a wab — which is
to say, it’s a regional ethnophaulism (otherwise known as
an ethnic slur) used to deride Mexicans as wetbacks. It’s
a mongrelized form of the word ‘chero, itself a contraction
of the word ranchero, literally meaning a rancher but in
Mexican Spanish also denoting someone from the countryside. “Cheddar” is a prime example of how Mexican-hating
is such an art form in the United States.”
He goes on to describe how words like “cheros” and “cheddars” are often times most common among Mexicans themselves. “What’s most amazing about this American regional
Mexi-bashing phenomenon is that these words find their most
enthusiastic usage among the Mexican community.”
Dr. Vincent Baca, History professor on the Auraria
Campus, sees this trend as detrimental. “I have usually heard the term “chero” used by U.S.-born Latinos as an
insult directed at recent Mexican immigrants. It seems to be
a corruption of the word “ranchero.” There are many other
hate words to describe this group of people and I can’t say
that any of them are better than others. It is not possible for
me to rationalize irrational prejudice despite the source.”
Many place the social status and scene of a chero as out
of the modern loop. Some may take their traditional and rural
attire as meaning they are not in touch with the modern world
they have moved into. Some argue that a reputation is given
to them based on their farming ways, that they aren’t in touch
with an industry beyond the importance of the land.
As we explore the subcultures of Mexicans and Latinos as
a whole, we must be careful to define them after well thought
out and crafted opinions in place of stereotypes or ethnic slurs.
As we have learned in the past, using terms to label different
groups, even if used by the majority of that ethnic group, may
alienate others. Tread carefully while exploring your culture
and most importantly, educate those around you.

diferentes significados de la palabra chero. Desde positivos,
hasta inofensivos a ofensivos, la palabra evoca emociones de
todos lados. La única cosa que fue definido en términos de lo
que la imagen atraída por la palabra chero, es la de un vaquero.
Vaqueros, un sombrero Stetson, cinturones grandes,
botas con punta y camisas vaqueras. Para el estudiante del
3er. año de CU Boulder, Esteban Hernández, la palabra chero

un estilo de ropa. Generalmente significa hombres y jóvenes

La cultura del chero se describe también como algo

“Yo siempre he pensado que era una forma corta

Se ha convertido en un término que se refiere a alguien que
parece rural, o ‘del campo’”, dijo ella.
En Colorado específicamente, la palabra “cheddar” ha sido

de música, un “cheddar” es alguien que oye polca. El término
“cheddar” es descrito por el Diccionario de Doble Filo en la jerga

sino que en realidad es la forma de Denver de insultar a un
mexicano — que quiere decir, un etnofaulismo regional
(conocido de otra manera como un epíteto étnico) que se
usa para rebajar a los mexicanos como espaldas mojadas.
Es una forma híbrida de la palabra ‘chero, que de por sí es

“Hardest-working” student was used to
describe Jefferson High School senior Jacqueline
Aguilar. Graduating valedictorian, Aguilar will
attend the University of Colorado at Boulder. She
enrolled in advance placement courses such as
world history, literature and economics. Aguilar is
also an athlete (basketball, soccer and volleyball)
and has been involved with the student senate.
She is the president of the National Honor Society,
participates in Upward Bound Power–Up program and the Las Amigas tutoring, among others.
Aguilar currently has a 4.02 GPA and is bilingual;
Spanish is her first language.

“Every Mexican restaurant in the country celebrates
Cinco de Mayo,” said Guillermo Castro, a Birmingham, Ala.,
restaurateur who has big plans for this weekend. “This
Thursday, we’re going to have $25,000 in business,” at one
of his restaurants. His Cinco de Mayo estimate is about
three times the business he would normally have at his Sol
y Luna restaurant in Birmingham. “It’s a great business day.”
Castro, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, is one of the
Pied Piper-like entrepreneurs who have capitalized on the
Cinco de Mayo phenomenon and helped spread it far and
wide across the nation. His restaurants, including three
taquerias and one upscale tapas bar in Birmingham and
Montgomery, are just two of an untold number of restaurants nationwide celebrating Mexican history this week.
In Waterloo, Iowa, city library worker Claudia Ramirez
is organizing a smaller Cinco de Mayo. Despite no beer or
liquor sponsorships, she looks forward to a modest event
that will help reinforce the region’s growing diversity. “We
are in the process of wanting to do things with the community,” she said. “Cinco de Mayo is the starting point.”
According to Ramirez, the 2010 census fixed Waterloo’s
population at approximately 60,000 residents. About 5,000,
she said, are of Mexican or Latino ancestry.
If Waterloo or any other city needs a tip on how to
throw a Cinco de Mayo bash, they need look no further than
Denver where one of the nation’s largest — if not the largest— celebrations occurs.
Prior to 1987, Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Denver
were more ‘family-style’ than ‘super-sized.’ In fact, after a
tepid start with the celebration, it went away, simply vanished. And no one remembers exactly why. But a chance
conversation changed everything.
“I was talking to Pierre,” said Veronica Barela, head
of NEWSED and the name most usually associated with
Denver’s Cinco de Mayo. “He (the late Pierre Jimenez) said,
‘why don’t you bring it back to Santa Fe like it used to be?’”
It took a lot of work, but the celebration once again began.
With uncertain and unsteady baby steps, the 1987 startup crowd that flooded Santa Fe was estimated at 6,000 with
only three sponsors. Today, cities like Phoenix, Chicago or
San Francisco, all of whom have successful ‘Cincos’ could
learn a thing or two from Denver where an estimated
400,000 will descend on Civic Center Park to toast the Battle
of Puebla. The event officially kicks off Saturday morning
with a parade.
“The parade is a huge feature for us this year,” said
Andrea Barela, daughter and ‘right hand’ of her mother,
Veronica Barela. “It begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday.” The
parade starts at Colfax and Fox and ends on Lincoln Street
near the main library.
While the celebration wants to stay close to its roots,
it is clearly an event that has blossomed beyond anyone’s
expectations. This year’s sponsors include PepsiCo, Lowe’s,
Dodge Ram and a number of beer companies. The Denver
Post and 7News, along with a number of other media com-
panies, have also attached their names to the event. (La Voz
is also a sponsor.) Indeed, companies are eager to lend their
name — and money — to this event.
Clearly, with nearly 200,000 visitors each day in Civic
Center Park, marketers are taking advantage of the opportunity to introduce themselves to as many people as possible.
The NBA plans to have an active and hands-on exhibit.
Lowe’s will also be there trying to lure new customers with
its latest home-improvement tools and accessories. And the
Navy, not one to miss a recruiting opportunity, will have its
‘Leapfrog’ jump team perform two drops into the event.
“They come for a reason,” Andrea Barela said. “They
know they’re hitting the Hispanic marketing niche. They
reach so many people.” And, whether they’re recruiting or
selling goods or services, companies who pay a fee to be
part of the action know they’re reaching well beyond the
fast-growing Hispanic buying public.
“We do our own demographic work,” Andrea Barela
said. A few days after each event, she and others look at the
makeup of the crowd. Clearly, it is diverse. “I would say that
30 to 40 percent of our crowd is not Latino.”
Cinco de Mayo celebrations have grown beyond anything anyone would have imagined just a generation earlier. Who, for example, would have imagined that in 2011,
Minnesotans, North Carolinians or Arkansans would be
toasting a relatively obscure Mexican battle a century and a
half earlier? Or, for that matter, having salsa or green chile
cooking contests?

Colorado started the season at
the top of Major League Baseball,
but in the last week has fallen to
number three among all MLB teams.
Colorado has not been impressive
hitting or pitching, but they have
managed to have a decent on-base
percentage stat. How might you ask?

Colorado hosted their first game
since the start of their road trip on

April 22 in Florida. Colorado lost the
series in Florida, won their series in Chicago (although
game three was postponed) and lost their first home series
over the weekend to ex Rockies skipper Clint Hurdle now
with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Colorado goes back on the
road throughout the rest of this week to face the Arizona
Diamondbacks in a three-game series before traveling to the
Bay Area to face division foes, the San Francisco Giants, also
a three game series.
The Rockies are just 4-3 since April 22, and hope to turn
their recent home losses into motivation for their upcoming
road trip.
In other sports: The Denver Broncos picked up several good players during draft week last week in New York.
Denver’s draft picks are as follows: first round, Von Miller
linebacker from Texas A&M (second overall pick); second
round, Rahim Moore safety from UCLA (45th overall);
Orlando Franklin offensive lineman from Miami (46th
overall); third round, Nate Irving linebacker from N.C. State
(67th overall); fourth round, Quinton Carter cornerback from
Oklahoma (108th overall); Julius Thomas tight end from
Portland State (129th overall); sixth round, Mike Mohamed
linebacker from California (189th overall); seventh round,
Virgil Green tight end from Nevada (204th overall); Jeremy
Beal defensive lineman from Oklahoma (247th overall).

denota a alguien de una región rural. “Cheddar” es el ejemplo clásico de como odiar a un mexicano es una forma de arte
en los Estados Unidos”.

“cheros” y “cheddars” que son con frecuencia más comunes
entre los mismos mexicanos. “Lo que es más asombroso
acerca de este fenómeno americano regional de insulto al
mexicano es que estas palabras encuentran su uso más
entusiasta entre la comunidad Mexicana”.
El Dr. Vincent Baca, profesor de Historia en el Campus
de Auraria, ve esta tendencia como algo perjudicial. “Yo he
oído generalmente la palabra “chero” usada por latinos nacidos en los EE.UU. y usada como un insulto a los inmigrantes
mexicanos recientes. Parece ser una corrupción de la palabra “ranchero”. Hay muchas otras palabras de odio para
describir a este grupo de gente y no puedo decir que ninguna
de ellas es mejor que las otras. No es posible para mi racionalizar el prejuicio irracional sin que importe de donde venga”.
Muchos ponen el estatus social y la escena de un chero
como si estuviera fuera del mundo moderno. Algunos pueden
tomar su ropaje tradicional y rural como queriendo decir que
no están inmersos en el mundo moderno adonde han llegado.
Algunos argumentan que una reputación se les ha dado con
base en su proveniencia campesina, que no están en contacto con una industria fuera de la importancia de la tierra.
A medida que exploramos las subculturas de los mexicanos y los latinos en general, nosotros debemos tener cuidado
en definirlos después de que se crean opiniones bien pensadas y descritas de los estereotipos y los epítetos étnicos.
Como hemos aprendido en el pasado, usar términos para
definir grupos diferentes, aun si son usadas por la mayoría
de ese grupo étnico, que puede enajenar a otros. Camine
con cuidado cuando explora su cultura y más importante aún,
eduque a quienes están a su alrededor.
As the Executive Director of Clínica Tepeyac, I was
extraordinarily pleased with the April 6 edition that provided general information, particularly as it relates to detection, of the various types of cancer. This series of articles
was quite effective in terms of heightening our Latino
community’s awareness with regard to this topic and,
more importantly, the importance of annual screenings.
I applaud the editorial staff at La Voz for making this
issue a high priority. It is exactly this type of media attention that will serve to better inform our community and
inspire individuals to be more proactive regarding their
own health and the health of their loved ones.
