For a handful of Denver political leaders eyeing the Mayor’s
office, there are few things more
important right now than the calendar. In less than forty days Denver
voters will decide who among this
gang of ten will lead the city the
next four years. Or, short of a
majority of fifty percent-plus one,
who will qualify for a run-off election in June.
Whatever the outcome, one
thing remains crystal clear; the
new chief executive will inherit
a city bruised and battered by an
unforgiving national economy.
Denver, not unlike many cities, is running in the red. The
latest estimate is that it is running
a hundred-million dollar-plus deficit. Belt-tightening and cutbacks
in city services abound and nearly
all municipal employees are being
forced to take unpaid furlough days.
On top of it all, Denver’s unemploy-

and help the nation meet President Obama’s goal for the
United States to have the best-educated workforce and the
highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.
Speaking at the first annual Building a Grad Nation Summit,
Vice President Biden called on each governor to host a state
college completion summit, released a new college completion tool kit for states and governors to draw ideas from, and
announced a new grant competition focused on helping
institutions of higher education boost completion rates.

Roxanne M. Gonzales became the new academic dean
of Regis University’s College for Professional Studies (CPS)
on March 28. Gonzales, who earned a doctorate in higher
education administration from the University of Massachusetts,
Boston, has more than 28 years of higher education leadership
in the United States and overseas.

Metropolitan State College of Denver officially breaks
ground on its Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center (HLC), further establishing its Hospitality, Tourism and Events Department
and joining a select group of less than a dozen similar experiential programs known nationally. The HLC will feature a 150-room

space within the HLC and 5,000 square feet of meeting and
conference space. The nearly seamless melding of academic
instruction, interactive laboratories and real-world experience
within the hotel will allow the College to offer an experiential
curriculum for its diverse undergraduate student population,
as well as current professionals seeking continuing education.

disaster declaration last week for the Indian Gulch Fire in

Aftershock/ Unease: A magnitude
6.5 aftershock shook Japan this weekend.
Radioactive water was discovered outside of
reactor two, recently. The water is believed
to be at higher radioactive levels than first
thought. Prior to the discovery, Tokyo residents were hitting store shelves buying
bottled water for fear of radiation in their
drinking water. Japanese exports have also
taken a hit due to fear or radiation, which
has led Japan to up safety measures for
industries that export goods.
Quake in Myanmar: A 6.8 magnitude
earthquake struck Myanmar last Thursday
leaving 75 dead. The earthquake was felt all
the way in Thailand and Vietnam.

Charged: Former Ukrainian President
Leonid Kuchma has been charged for involvement in the 2000 murder (beheading) of
journalist Georgiy Gongadze. Gongadze was
a well-known critic of the then president.
In Latin America
Freed: Felix Navarro and Jose Ferrer,
Cuban dissidents were released last
Wednesday. Navarro and Ferrer were taken
into custody during a 2003 opposition crackdown. Cuba has now released all 75 dissidents it imprisoned.
Divorce?: Guatemalan President Alvaro

for divorce. The couple will divorce in order
to allow Torres to run for president later this

controller caused a scare in Reagan National
Airport in Washington D.C. last Wednesday
when pilots, on two planes, could not reach
the air-traffic control tower to land. The airtraffic controller has been suspended after
admitting he fell asleep.

Former U.S. House of Representative and
first female vice presidential candidate
Geraldine Ferraro has died. She succumbed
to blood cancer, which she battled for years.
She was 75.
High Court: A case against retail giant
Wal-mart will be heard at the Supreme Court
this week. The class-action lawsuit against
the company claims that several current and
former female employees were discriminated against. Wal-Mart denies those claims.
Colorado stop: Vice President Joe
Biden was in Snowmass, Colo. this past
weekend to attend the 25th annual National
Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. He

The sins of bigotry are a current thread that runs
through the American sociological and psychological scene
today. Much of it comes from the
fear caused by the sense that the
world is spinning out of the control
in our everyday lives.
America is in transition and
those that want to keep things as
they were are struggling to make
their point stick as public policy.
Soledad O’Brien’s piece on CNN
demonstrates that people can go as
far
as negating the Constitution in

the name of the Constitution.
Murfreesboro, Tenn. is a small community with a growing Muslim population that requires a larger mosque to
accommodate its members. Construction approval for the
project by the county was already a reality before all hell
broke loose.
Given the current backlash against Islam around the
world, it is predictable that the local mob mentality would
come to the forefront. The bigoted remarks even by politicians, the burning of construction equipment on the site
and shots being fired apparently to intimidate the congregation are ironically terrorist acts done in the name of anti-
terrorism.
So far, the Muslim community is Murfreesboro have
prevailed in a challenge to the construction of the mosque,
but the locals appear willing to take the case all of the way to
the Supreme Court. I imagine that the intimidation, harassment and terrorist acts will continue to victimize these
members of one of the three great religions of the world for
the foreseeable future.
When anti-Muslim activists are pressed for consistency
in their attitude with our constitutional guarantees and
democratic values, they are quick to say that they are only
against radical Muslims. That has a familiar ring to it as a
ploy used by those who want to deny to others the freedoms
and opportunities that they enjoy.
Wisconsin’s anti-union legislation is another example
of this tendency to use half truths to mask real intentions.
In this case, the governor and the legislative majority in
Wisconsin were adamant that they were not anti-union, just
anti-public union.
The same can be said about the anti-immigrant lobby
across the country, as they will tell you that they are not
against Latino immigrants, just illegal aliens. The religious
and racial bigotry hides a major fear by some that the country is in transition to a reality that the old guard does not like.
It is also significant that at the time when the United

States and the Western World are locked in battle with
the Taliban and Al-Qaeda the Arab world is beginning to
experience the light of a new renaissance that promises
the freedom and individual liberty guaranteed by effective
constitutions. This new light is spreading across the face of
the original land of Islam.
The youth driven changes in the Arab region represent
the vanguard of a new world dedicated to the achievement
of new heights and the establishment of institutions that
respond to the need for a new beginning. This renaissance
has to be appreciated by Americans for what it is and honored as another important step in renewing the future of a
modern decadent reality.
That is why it is more important than ever to nurture
and encourage the assimilation of the progressive Muslim
religious character into the American body politic. A people
in renaissance in our midst cannot help but make us a better country.
Instead of trying to do them in and intimidate their
effort for self improvement, Americans ought to understand
that the Arab-Muslim renaissance need not stop at the door
of the Middle East. It is our destiny to help those seeking
freedom and in return achieve our own renewal.

América está en una transición y los
que quieren mantener el estatus quo y que
están luchando por hacer que sus ideas
sean las únicas como política pública. La
presentación de Soledad O’Brien en CNN
demuestra que la gente puede ir tan lejos
como negar la Constitución a nombre de la
misma Constitución.
Murfreesboro, Tennessee es una
pequeña comunidad que tiene una creciente población musulmana que necesita una
mezquita más grande para acomodar sus
miembros. La aprobación de la construcción
del proyecto de parte del condado ya era una
realidad hasta que todo se volvió una locura.
Dada la reciente reacción en contra del
Islam en el mundo, es predicable que la mentalidad local de masas venga al frente. Las
palabras intolerantes de los mismos políticos, la quema de equipo de construcción en
el local y disparos hechos aparentemente
con el fin de intimidar a la congregación son

Cuando se pide a los activistas anti
musulmanes que tengan consistencia en
su actitud con nuestras garantías constitucionales y los valores democráticos, ellos

están hablando solamente de musulmanes
radicales. Esto suena muy familiar ya que
ha sido un truco usado por los que quieren
negar a otros las libertades y oportunidades
que ellos mismos están disfrutando.
La legislación de Wisconsin en contra
de los sindicatos es otro ejemplo de esta
tendencia de usar verdades a medias para
esconder la verdadera intención. En este
caso, el gobernador y la mayoría legislativa
de Wisconsin eran inflexibles en decir que
no son anti sindicalistas, sino solamente
anti sindicalismo público.
Lo mismo se puede decir acerca del
cabildeo anti-inmigrante en todo el país,
ya que ellos no hablan de que no están
en contra de los inmigrantes latinos, sino
solamente los extranjeros ilegales. La intolerancia religiosa y racial esconde el mayor
temor de que el país está en un estado de
transición a una realidad que no agrada a la
vieja guardia.
También es significativo que en el
momento en que los Estados Unidos y el
Mundo Occidental están enardecidos en
una batalla contra el Talibán y Al-Qaeda, el
mundo árabe esta comenzado a experimentar la luz de un nuevo renacimiento que
promueve la libertad y la libertad individual
garantizada por constituciones efectivas.
Esta nueva luz se está esparciendo por toda
la fachada de la tierra que dio origen al
Islamismo.
Los cambios de la región árabe impulsados por la juventud representan la vanguardia de un nuevo mundo dedicado a
llegar a alturas más grandes y el establecimiento de instituciones que respondan a las
necesidades de un nuevo comienzo. Este

No second chances at life
Final classes are drawing to
a close. Cap and gowns are being
reserved and letters of admissions
are being delivered daily to college
hopefuls in high schools around the
country. It is also that time when the
daily p.a. announcements encourage
you to buy one ticket over and over.
Prom. The dress, the date, the
theme. Prom is on the top of many
high school seniors to-do lists this
season. Although planning the event

can be both exciting and stressful,
there is one component that cannot get caught up in the fluff.
Safety is more important than picking out that perfect
corsage or boutonniére. It is more important than renting
that limo or the photos that you take. The safety measures
that you take at your prom or graduation could save your life.
In general, auto accidents are the leading cause of
death for young people. Each year almost 6,000 teens are
killed in car accidents. A few years ago, 116 drivers were
killed in Colorado alone, many of whom were not wearing
their seatbelts. More than half of all these deaths happen
between Friday and Sunday, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. when
special events like prom and graduation occur.
Oftentimes a young person loses their life because they
are impaired or the person they are riding with is. According
to research, the leading causes of young driver accidents
involve the following: lack of awareness of consequences of
risk-taking behavior, driving inexperience, too many peers
in car with new drivers, using driving as a social activity,
speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
One organization comes into the mix and saves young
lives through education. In Colorado, California, Idaho,
North Dakota and Wyoming, Alive at 25 offers driving educa-

tion courses to help prevent deaths among teen and young
adult drivers and believes most driving accidents and deaths
among teens are preventable.
The National Safety Council, a leader in driver improvement training for more than 40 years, developed Alive at 25
to specifically target drivers between the ages of 16 and 24.
Since 1995, more than 400,000 young adults have learned
life-saving defensive driving skills through this organization.
The interactive program promotes responsibility for young
people’s driving behavior. Through exercises, skill practices,
on the sport defensive techniques, interactive media, group
discussions, demonstrations and role playing, young participants gain confidence in how to properly be safe in a vehicle
and during high times like prom, graduation, holidays, etc.
For Colorado, the Alive at 25 program is managed
through a joint partnership between the National Safety
Council, the Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado State
Patrol Family Foundation. In 2006, over 9,000 young people
attended the Alive at 25 courses in Colorado. The numbers
only continue to grow today.
Courses are offered everyday around the state. There is
a tuition cost for the course, but scholarships are available.

Many schools and safety departments have begun to do
mock car crashes days before proms and graduations, often
with no warning. The mock crashes can be extremely real,
staged with fake blood, body bags, re-enacted funerals, letters
home to parents and more. This real life demonstration makes
the situation of safety for students just a little more real than
what they might find in a textbook. Many become extremely
emotional. Every 15 Minutes is another organization that goes
to great lengths to stage and role play the tragedies that will
come from alcohol related driving. For more details please

Students and parents need to take special note of distractions when driving. They not only include drunk driving
anymore, but the dangers of using cellular telephones when
driving. Studies say using a cell phone while driving has the
same effect as if you had just consumed four alcoholic beverages and got behind the wheel.
The second highest cause of accidents in 2009 was inattentive driving, which includes talking on cell phones. Alive at
25 looks to parents of young drivers to set the example of driving safe and adhering to the new Colorado laws themselves.
The organization has also partnered with AutoHabits, a
GPS Driver Behavior Reporting System that instantly tracks
your vehicle and the driver’s habits such as speed, setting
where your driver can and cannot go and acceleration and
braking.
See measures others states are taking. The office of
Public Safety and Security runs a program in Massachusetts
that encourages students to produce prom short videos on
safety. The teens write and produce a 60-second video clip
on safe driving and the avoidance of drinking during prom
and graduation season in hopes of inspiring other teens to
do the same. The winner of the contest receives an all paid
prom package. This year the theme is “Dance. Don’t chance.”

about it, something that seems to

for the past two years. Or it could be the talks of an NFL

Although it is easy to assume why the Rockies are
primed for the Mile High country’s undivided attention it’s
just as easy to point out the obvious! The Rockies buzz this
year has nothing to do with the demise of other teams, or
players in this case, but rather the fact that the Colorado
Rockies have brought back an excitement to a city that has
some of the most devoted fans in the country.

(maybe you invited only your father and not your mother),
