With just a quick scan of some
of Denver’s busiest streets or even
its more leisurely traveled arterials, it’s hard to miss the scores
of medical marijuana dispensaries that now dot the landscape.
In 2000, Colorado voters passed
the Medical Marijuana Use Act,
which over the course of a decade
spawned an explosion of new,
small businesses.
These shops, many of which
are quite sophisticated, have
moved in to where ‘mom ‘n’ pop’
businesses once stood or occupy
store fronts that not long ago were
bakeries, second-hand stores or
even check-cashing services. They
sell everything from elaborate
lighting systems for home-tended
product to foodstuffs like marijuana butter, candy and drinks.
They have benign and bucolic
names that conflate the majesty
of Colorado with the power of
medicine — alpine, high country
and, of course, Rocky Mountain
are commonly seen on store front
windows. With hundreds of these
shops in Denver and more than

Fires ravage Southwestern U.S.

The fire that threatened the nuclear laboratory in New
Mexico is one of several impacting Southwestern United
States in 2011.
Las Conchas fire began its threatening path toward the
Los Alamos National Laboratory Sunday, June 26, forcing
the evacuation of the 10,000 Los Alamos, N.M. residents.
Not until this weekend, were they able to return safely back
home.
The Las Conchas Fire ... is now
considered the largest in New
Mexico history.
Local officials expressed confidence late last week that
the fire would not reach the research facility, which saw the
birth of the atomic bomb, because the winds were diverting
the fire. The facility is scheduled to open today, Wednesday.
“Los Alamos National Laboratory appears to have escaped
serious damage from the Las Conchas fire. We are grateful
for the tremendous efforts of emergency responders that
helped spare the Lab and the town of Los Alamos. I wish to
extend my deepest thanks to everyone who has helped so far,
including all Lab employees who have patiently persevered
during this emergency,” said Charles McMillan, Los Alamos
National Laboratory director, in a message to employees.
While the winds did help to redirect the fire away from
the lab, the fire also left a mark on lands belonging to the
Santa Clara Pueblo. The fire has already burned thousands
of acres (just under 15,000) and left the nation worried
about possible exposure to hazard material in the air due
to the stored nuclear waste from the Los Alamos nuclear
plant — a concern that was shared by the state’s environment department. The Environmental Protection Agency has
tested the area for signs of exposure.
All in all, about 1,000 firefighters from within the country were deployed to the area to help contain the fire. They’ve
been working to prevent its spread by clearing brush.
Aiding New Mexico to control the fires are two C-130s
from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. With crewmembers of about 25, they’ve dropped fire retardant to contain
the fires blazing in the state in hopes of preventing a spread.
Both the Donaldson and Pacheco Fires are also burning
nearby.
The Las Conchas Fire, which is 27 percent contained as
of Monday, is now considered the largest in New Mexico history. It has ravaged more than 120,000 acres and is believed
to have been caused by a downed power line. The Dry Lakes
Fire of 2003, the largest at that time, burned 94,000 acres.
Other areas of Southwestern United States have also
had to deal with its fair share of wildfires. The Wallow Fire
in Arizona has burned over 500,000 acres since May and
continues to burn. In Texas, fires have devastated 3 million
acres this year alone.

También ayudando a Nuevo México a controlar los

Aérea Peterson de Colorado. Con una tripulación de cerca

Estamos contentos con los tremendos esfuerzos hechos por
quienes respondieron a la emergencia y que ayudaron a
proteger el laboratorio y la ciudad de Los Alamos. Yo quiero
extender mis más sincero agradecimiento a todos los que
han ayudado hasta ahora, incluyendo a todos los empleados
del laboratorio que han perseverado pacientemente en esta
emergencia”, dijo Charles McMillan, director del Laboratorio

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, U.S. Sen.
Michael Bennet (D-CO) —along with Majority Leader Harry
Reid (NV) and U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin (IL), Chuck Schumer
(NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), Sherrod Brown (OH), Jeanne
Shaheen (NH), Jeff Merkley (OR), Mark Begich (AK), Ben
Cardin (MD), Mary Landrieu (LA), Patty Murray (WA), Ron
Wyden (OR), Tom Harkin (IA), Herb Kohl (WI) and Tom Udall
(NM)—expressed serious concerns about voter identification
laws, which, they believe, could disenfranchise American voters.
Since January, voter ID laws have been passed in
Wisconsin, South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Kansas and
Tennessee; Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire are also
considering proposals.
Studies have shown that as high as 11 percent of eligible voters nationwide do not have a government-issued ID.
This percentage is higher among seniors, racial minorities,
low-income voters and students.

DREAM Act
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in testimony
at the first-ever Senate hearing on the DREAM Act before
the Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugee, and Border

Grasscycle
Denver Recycles, a program of Denver Public Works/Solid
Waste Management, in partnership with Denver Parks and
Recreation and Denver Water, is encouraging residents to
lose the bags this summer and practice grasscycling by leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. Grasscycling is
the natural way to recycle grass clippings and provides lawns
with the valuable nutrients and water they need.
The city is asking Denver residents to join Denver Parks
and Recreation in their grasscycling efforts by taking the
GrassCycle Pledge and committing to leave their clippings on
the lawn this summer instead of bagging them for the trash.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced $83,941,360
in grants through the National Farmworker Jobs Program
to combat the chronic unemployment and underemployment experienced by migrant and seasonal farmworkers
who depend primarily on agricultural labor jobs. A total of
$78,253,180 will go to 52 organizations nationwide, including Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah,
Wyoming, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, to provide
training, employment and support services for farmworkers
and their families. An additional $5,688,600 will go to 16
organizations, including two in Colorado and Iowa, to provide temporary or permanent housing assistance.

Clinica Tepeyac receives a grant
Dr. Marc Hurlbert, executive director of the Avon Breast
Cancer Crusade announced during the Closing Ceremony
at the seventh annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer a total
of more than $1 million in grants to six local organizations,
ensuring the funds raised immediately benefit the community.
More grants are slated to be awarded throughout the year to
breast cancer programs nationwide. “Our beneficiaries offer
life-saving services to patients regardless of their ability to pay.
And they’re doing cutting-edge research to find better treatments, prevention strategies, and ultimately a cure. These
new grants will literally help them save lives,” said Hurlbert.

awareness regarding the benefits of mammograms, Breast

high hopes of using money generated from
the industry, a figure he estimated at $10
million annually, for establishing drug treatment centers and providing medical care for
veterans.
So far, only Colorado and California
have allowed this new industry to take root.
But there are movements in states all across
the U.S. to start their own medical marijuana operations.
In a single lifetime, this substance,
responsible for the imprisonment of thousands at a cost of billions of dollars, has
gone from the shadows to open sale on the
busiest thoroughfares in Colorado. It has
been transformed from its secretive street
names like ‘yesca,’ ‘mota’ and ‘yerba’ to
marketing labels like Banana Kush, Blue
Dream and Pineapple Express.
Were they alive today, Colorado’s first
two casualties in the war on drugs, Caldwell
and Baca, would be shocked at pot’s evolution or, perhaps, pleased.

all too happy to make him the poster boy for
youth — or anyone else — gone-bad, the
ideal model for illustrating the perils of pot.
In its zero-tolerance war on pot, the
government devised what it thought was the
perfect weapon: the marijuana tax stamp.
The stamp was essentially a ruse to convict.
While technically it was not illegal to smoke
or possess pot, without a tax stamp the
penalties were severe. Interestingly, it was
a Denver case that illustrated the government’s no-nonsense zeal in cracking down
on pot.
On the day the Tax Law went into effect
in 1937, two Denver men, Sam Caldwell and
Moses Baca, were arrested for possession
of marijuana at the Lexington Hotel. Three
days later, Caldwell, an unemployed laborer,
became the government’s first casualty in
the war on drugs.

Coloradans can get pretty thirsty.
Luckily, as a brewing state, we are
never far from a refreshing beverage.
During the late summer months, the
Rocky Mountain state has its taps
flowing and its corks popping with
beer and wine festivals.
“Beer is in Denver’s DNA,”
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper
said in a statement. As the owner
of the first brew pub in Colorado,
Emma Lynch
he knows that Denver brews more
beer than any other city, is home to the largest brewing site,
Coors Brewery, and that according to the Guinness World
Records, hosts the largest beer festival on the planet. Last
year at the Great American Beef Fest, 2,400 beers were available for tasting.
Denver Beer Fest comes to Denver at a time when the
frothy beverage is on everyone’s mind. The citywide fest is
at the same time as the Great American Beer Festival and
Oktoberfest Denver. Visit Denver presents its third year of
Denver Beer Fest Sept. 23rd-Oct. 1st. The nine-day event
includes rare beer tasting, beer that will match your dinner,
beer tappings, brewery tours and much more. Partnered this
year with the Colorado Brewers Guild, the attendance of
breweries around the city and state is at a high. Celebrate
Oktoberfest like you are in Germany. Carry around a beer

for grapes.”
The 20th annual Colorado Mountain Winefest in

“Racism was alive and well at Grandview High
in 1977,” notes LeBlanc-Esparza. Speaking Spanish
was not allowed. LeBlanc-Esparza says, “I did not
want to continue working in the fields, so I persevered negativity.” He earned All-American status in
wresting (2nd in the nation in the 150 lb category)
and in academics.”

Born and raised in Yakima Valley in
Washington State, LeBlanc-Esparza was part of a
working migrant family. Second to the youngest
in a family of five, he worked the fields during
the summer and school breaks. After high school
he attended Columbia Basin Junior College, then
enrolled at the University of Central Washington
and acquired a BA in physical education in 1983.
He acquired a master’s degree in science, graduating in 1985. LeBlanc-Esparza is currently pursuing
a PhD through the University of Northern Colorado
(UNC). LeBlanc-Esparza returned to Grandview
High School in a teaching capacity (general math/
physical education) also tutoring migrant students
and serving as wrestling coach. He remained
at Grandview for 16 years, later serving in the
position of Athletic Director and Assistant Vice
Principal for the last 6 years. He began working
at Granger High School, a high poverty, low testing student body whose reading level tested at 20
percent reading level and a 7 percent writing level.
After nine years, the school turned around measuring at 100 percent parent involvement, 90 percent
graduation rate (state assessment) 77 percent
reading level, lowest community crime level and
sports achievement. In 2010, he joined a team of
400 delegates chosen by a College Board to study
the academic habits
of Chinese students.
He met his wife Kym,
who lived in Colorado,
on that trip. Also,

fun applications of math and science in an
exciting, hands-on, team-oriented atmosphere from analyzing the microbiology in a
sample of the Cherry Creek to studying the
physics of roller coasters at Elitch Gardens
Theme and Water Park. In Summer Science
Institute 2011, Metro State faculty will
teach morning and afternoon classes in
an integrated setting, based on Colorado
content standards. The sessions, held on
the Auraria Campus, are four hours per
day (either morning or afternoon) for two
weeks. Students will be provided lunch each
day, and a day-long field trip to Elitch’s will

imaginarse como han cambiado la actitud hacia esta planta
que era antes ‘el camino al infierno, fuego y azufre’ que se
llamaba cannabis.
A finales de los cuarenta, el actor Robert Mitchum fue
detenido por poseer yerba — y una sentencia subsiguiente
de dos meses en la carcel del Condado de los Angeles— que
asombró y escandalizó a Hollywood. Convenientemente,
cuando él fue detenido en una operación clandestina de la
policía, Mitchum era el impecable estándar de oro por el
comportamiento de niño malo. El gobierno fue demasiado
feliz en hacerlo el niño pantalla de la juventud — o de cualquier otro — que se ha degenerado, el modelo ideal para
ilustrar los peligros de la yerba.
Con su cero tolerancia en la guerra contra la yerba, el

En el día en que la Ley de Impuestos entró en efecto
en 1937, dos hombres de Denver, Sam Caldwell y Moses
Baca, fueron detenidos por poseer marihuana en el Hotel
Lexington. Tres días más tarde, Caldwell, que era un trabajador sin empleo, se convirtió en la primera víctima de la
guerra contra las drogas.
Los agentes federales testificaron haber encontrado
dos cigarros de marihuana en su posesión. Y, al no tener
una estampilla de impuestos, el fue sentenciado a cuatro
años de labor dura en la Penitenciaría Federal Leavenworth.
Baca recibió 18 meses. El gobierno no emitió estampillas de
impuestos sobre la yerba en el año 1937 — ni nunca. Pero
esos eran los tiempos.
Hoy vender yerba en Colorado es perfectamente legal,
siempre y cuando se cumplan todas las reglas y requisitos
del estado. Con la autorización apropiada del estado, alguien
registrado puede parar en cualquiera de las centenas de
clínicas de marihuana médica que se encuentran en el área
metropolitana y recoger un octavo, cuarto o media onza de
este producto regulado por el estado. O, si lo prefieren, ellos
pueden comprar la planta entera de marihuana.
“En los últimos tres meses nosotros hemos visto un
aumento de dos a tres mil por ciento (de personas)”, en los
pacientes de marihuana médica, dijo Ron Hyman, Director
del Registro de Marihuana Medica de Colorado del departamento de salud del estado. Este aumento, dijo, está encima
de más de 127 mil usuarios que ya tienen ‘tarjeta roja’, el
certificado oficial del estado para una compra autorizada de
yerba para el dolor.
“Nosotros tomamos pasos muy serios para asegurarnos
que el programa se sigue con el espíritu que pensaban los
electores”, dijo Hyman, refiriéndose a las guías legislativas

Clinic & Wellness Center en la 50th y Colorado, ha estado

antes de entrar en este negocio”.
El crecimiento de la industria en Colorado ha sido
fenomenal. Clínicas como las de Eychner sobrepasan
dramáticamente aun los mismos sitios reconocidos como
Starbucks en la ciudad y en el estado. Y debido a su crecimiento, la competencia entre las clínicas ha crecido.

A 4th of July Sports weekend
Over the 4th of July weekend the
Colorado Rockies faced the Kansas
City Royals in Denver. Colorado was
in prime form taking game one with
ease, shutting out the Royals 9-0.
The following game was more of the
same. The Rockies managed another
9-run game beating the Royals 9-6
on Saturday.
On Sunday, the Rockies tried
to wrap up the series with a sweep;

however, the Royals gave the Rockies
a dose of their own medicine beating Colorado 16-8. The
Rockies traveled to Atlanta to face the Braves in a four-game
series. Monday marked game one as Colorado lost a second
game in a row and the first game of the series, 1-4. Game
three, is scheduled to begin at 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday and
game four will be on Thursday at 11:05 a.m.
In other sports: The Colorado Rapids hosted the Houston
Dynamo over the weekend at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in
Commerce City Sunday night. Colorado dominated most of
the game, but failed to score any goals (game results 0-0). The
home team crowd was loud and almost every seat was filled
to watch the defending Major League Soccer champions along
with one of Colorado’s most spectacular fireworks display.
Given the cancellation of many area firework displays and
caution over a very dry season, the well controlled fireworks
display was a major hit in a city ready to show their sports
colors and patrioism.
It seems as though the NBA has taken a page out of the
National Football League’s book with a bargaining agreement
and have also taken measures as drastic as locking out players in the off-season. No recent news has been released as to
whether or not the players and owners have reached any settlement about the collective bargaining agreement in the NFL.
Any chance of a 2011-2012 season still remains to be seen.

Retirement planning - It’s never too
soon to begin saving for retirement. Set
your retirement goals and talk with a financial planner now to figure out how you can
