celebrated The Plaids and Pumps Ball.
Our 51st annual Cathedral Ball was held
at the Baltimore Country Club in Roland
Park. With the participation of many
Cathedral parents throughout the year,
the Ball continues to be a long-standing
special event which directly benefits the
children of the School of the Cathedral.
Special thanks go to our chairpersons for
the evening, Leanne & Hugh Mohler
and Michele & Dennis Tadeo; and our
honorary sponsors, Reverend Monsignor
J. Bruce Jarboe and Sister Josephann
Wagoner, SSND.
This year at the Plaids and Pumps Ball
the Decorations Committee, led by new

evening’s forecast did not dampen spirits.
Over 300 guests celebrated the evening
in their golf, plaid, and brightly colored
preppy attire!
Leslie Rose, Decorations Chair, shared,
“Upon checking in, guests passed under a
chandelier adorned with one of the many
bouquets of brightly colored paper lanterns
and were surprised to share a drink and a
laugh with “ Rodney Dangerfield” while
watching the original Caddy Shack movie
on an old fashioned TV set. Out on the
porch, where tables were embellished
with preppy plaid cloths and vases filled
with golf balls and Gerber daisies in candy
colored hues, guests could look down
the giant candy display overflowing with
a variety of candies — spiral lollipops,
candy wax bottles, mini ice cream cones,
gumballs, pixie sticks, chocolate-covered

the guests for dessert! Some opted for coffee

skewers with hummus and pita. A few of
the main entrees for the evening consisted
of delicious sautéed shrimp and rice, flank
steak and potatoes, wedge salad bar, and
chicken Chesapeake.
Chairs of the Auction Kristen Rudolph
and Melissa Taylor, along with their
committee, provided a grand selection of
items for both the Silent and Live Auction,
which raised $62,000.
Pat Franklin was our wonderful
auctioneer once again this year! Pat had the
crowd laughing and bidding high by 9:30 p.m.
with the live auction. He auctioned off a
week in a private villa in the Dominican
Republic with a private pool and jacuzzi,
personal chef, and housecleaner; a
mudroom enclosure or a master bathroom
renovation; the Governor’s skybox at an
Orioles game; and a chance to experience
the thrill of driving an open cockpit race
car. Guests bid on amazing getaways like
a long weekend on the North Shore in
Long Island that included wine tours and

a foursome for golf, to a weekend getaway
in the nation’s Capitol and brunch at the
Four Seasons in Georgetown. Bid Pal made
bidding very easy for the crowd.
Guests bid on a variety of Silent
Auction items: dinners at local restaurants
throughout Baltimore, beauty spa
treatments, Ravens tickets, rounds of golf,
a crab feast, tickets to the theatre, and
even a private tour of the Basilica with
dinner in Little Italy! The class creations,
chaired by Mary Lynne Diette and Mary
Goldsborough, were a big hit again with
creations such as painted end tables, an
Advent Calendar, a happy birthday cake
stand, and a self-portrait serving tray! What
a great way to treat oneself and at the same
time give back money to the school!
Jenai Paul and Lisa Melancon, Chairs
of the Camp Auction, offered an array of
summer camps so attractive that they sold
out in the first round, which brought the
school $4,300.
Special recognition for their part in

parents Emily McGeady and Mary
Goldsborough, who designed the Plaids
and Pumps Ball invitation and program,
both of which were very generously printed
by Robbin & John Furst of J.H. Furst

Music at the pre-party was provided by
acoustic guitar player Al Walsh, and for the
main party by DJ Edge who had the crowd
on the dance floor the whole evening.
Guests arrived in an array of golf and plaid
attire….. ladies wore their pink, green and
plaid in casual to cocktail dresses; while the
gentlemen wore their wild brightly colored
golf slacks to paisley or plaid jackets- to
match or clash!

community extends its wholehearted
thanks for this community-building effort
between the school faculty and staff and
parish members. With their combined
hard work and dedication toward this
annual gala, a profit of over $100,000
was achieved and will be directed toward
paying off the turf field project.
Sr. Josephann Wagoner shared, “I am
grateful for all those who have worked
and contributed toward this gala event.
This evening always presents a wonderful
opportunity to gather with all of you and
express my thanks for all of the blessings
bestowed upon our school. I extend extra
special thanks to the co-chairs of the ball,

Fun Run 2012
Cardinal Cup Race winners
T
he School of the Cathedral and parish community
joined with members of our sister school, the
Mother Seton Academy (MSA), to participate in
the 18th annual Cardinal Cup Fun Run on April
28, 2012. This 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk is held to provide an
activity for both communities to come together while raising
funds to benefit MSA, an all scholarship middle school that
serves boys and girls of low-income families in Baltimore City.
Sr. Charmaine Krohe, SSND, President of Mother Seton
Academy says, “We thank you for this special gift, this gift of
opportunities, you have given to the students of MSA. We look
forward to many more years of working together!”
The event, which is sponsored by the School of the Cathedral,
was chaired by school parent Amy Matteini. Over 500 walkers and
runners including students, faculty, and families from both schools
were blessed and led in prayer by Monsignor J. Bruce Jarboe
before the official start of the race. Neal Kopasek returned this year
to lead the runners and walkers in a “pre-race warm up.” The crowd
cheered as each runner crossed the finish line. During the awards
ceremony, recognition was given to runners who placed in their
categories. This was a wonderful morning to share with our MSA
family, and a true sign of our ongoing partnership. ■

illy Wonka Jr. is a musical all about candy and the
power of thinking positively! Using song, chocolate,
bubble machines, and Oompa Loompas, Roald Dahl
tells a timeless story of the world famous candy man
and his quest to find an heir. The School of the Cathedral Middle
School students began the process of bringing this show to life
with auditions in November. Forty students were cast as part of the
ensemble. Then, as a group, they worked to learn their dances, songs,
harmonies and acted their way through 3 months of rehearsal. The
final product, performed on March 30th, 31st, and April 1st, was to
a sold out crowd at the School of the Cathedral. Songs like “Candy
Man” and “Pure Imagination” had the audience clapping and singing
along. They were supported by a top notch production crew of sound
and lighting technicians, stage crew, house managers, runners, prop
masters, and stage managers made up of Middle School students.
Their technical support was a very large part of the success of Willy
Wonka Jr. Many thanks also to the parents who organized “Kiss the
Cast,” programs, ticketing, posters, and the cast party! This was an
amazing group of kids that put on an inspiring production full of
energy and joy. Congratulations to the company of Willy Wonka Jr. on
a job well done. ■

FINE ARTS
NIGHT 2012 …
Was A Great Success
Once Again This Year!
Just in case you missed it, here is a run down
of all of the performances:
F
ine Arts Night opened with several songs performed by
the fabulous school band. Next up was Haley Nickel
who played two classical piano pieces, Minuet and
Air to start Mr. Mathis’s portion of the evening. Vasili
Antoniades sang an old favorite, “When the Red Red Robin
Comes Bob Bob Bobbin’ Along,” with Mr. Mathis on piano.
Annemarie Gaarder performed “Cathedral Chimes” on piano.
Lucie Boucher did her impersonation of Elvis Presley and sang
“Hound Dog” with Mr. Mathis on keys, and rock steady Tabitha
Lardieri on drums. Eva Szymkiewicz played a piece from The
Lord of the Rings on piano called “Into the West.” Catherine
Frisch, Ingrid Woel-Nogueira, and Ramsay Hobbs sang “Rolling
In The Deep,” with Mr. Mathis on keyboard. Riley Schindler
and Isabella Schadt sang a Selena Gomez hit, “Love You Like
a Love Song” with Mr. Mathis on keyboard. MyCo and Anh Le
performed a piano duet called Spanish
Tornado; Casey Brown and Olivia Knott sang “You
Belong With Me,” with Mr. Mathis on guitar. Anna Boulay
performed a stirring rendition of “Beautiful,” with Mr. Mathis
on keyboard, and Nina Mainello on drums. Lilly Ratcliffe and
Brigid Edgerton were up next to perform “Speak Now,” with
Nina Mainello on drums and Mr. Mathis on guitar. Miranda
Lassiter sang and played guitar to perform a Taylor Swift song
from the Hunger Games called “Eyes Open.” Nellie Blaze
on guitar, Charlotte Boote on drums, and Liz Cameron on
vocals came up next with “Twist and Shout,” and were joined by
Rachel Gitlin on keyboard and Mr. Mathis on bass for the grand
finale, “Firework.” A good time was had by all!
Art Instructor Mrs. Maureen Roche organized an impressive
display of each student’s best artwork. The work consisted of a
variety of media including prints, paintings, drawings, collages,
and sculptures. The gallery area was located throughout the
school so guests could enjoy the creativity of each student on all
floors. ■

The Steve Tully Award
Each year an 8th grade student
is nominated for outstanding
athletic achievement for
basketball at Cathedral.
This year the award was received by Victoria Niller
and Emmett Warner. ■
T
he third graders embarked on an extension
of their study of the Federal Government.
Each child selected one of the
monuments or memorials in our nation’s
capital. Two tasks, one in research and the other in
design, had to be completed. The research portion
called for students to write a report including
information on the structure’s physical description,
location, reason for being built, and who or what it
honors. The design task required the construction
of a model of the selected monument. Creative
building and having a good time were two important aspects of this
part of the project. The results were spectacular and resulted in many
compliments from our D.C. tour guide. The knowledge gained by 3A and
3B in doing this project was amazing! Congratulations!!! ■

Mike Edwards, Athletic Director,
Retires After 28 Years at Cathedral
M
r. Mike Edwards has
retired after 28 years at the
School of the Cathedral.
He has taught in the
Archdiocese for 37 years.
Before coming to Cathedral he was the
Athletic Director at Mount Washington
School for Boys and prior to that taught
Physical Education and Science at Saint
Peter and Paul in Cumberland, Maryland.
Mr. Edwards is a 1973 graduate of
Frostburg State College where he earned
his graduate and undergraduate degrees
in Health and Physical Education. While
teaching at Cathedral, Mr. Edwards has
been involved with basketball programs at
Towson Catholic, Calvert Hall, Dundalk
Community College, and Loyola University.
He was the first full time Athletic
Director. Mr. Edwards has two sons: Alex
’97, presently a State Trooper in Salisbury,
Maryland and Mike ’99, who lives in San
Diego, California.
“Some of my best memories of
Cathedral are driving my boys to school
every day in my VW van, and watching
them play soccer, basketball and lacrosse.”
As for the athletics program, Mike says,
“the best part is the parent and teacher
involvement and the number of children
that take part in the different sports.”
Mike continues, “As the expression goes,
‘Time flies when you are having fun’ …
I would like to thank all the teachers both
Mr. Mike Edwards and Miss Carol White
past and present and all the parents and
friends that my family has made over the
years for making my time at Cathedral a
very enjoyable experience.” ■

The children in Miss White’s first class

some past and current students. For Miss
White, Cathedral has always been a close

As soon as she is greeted as “Miss

Many times she does not recognize these
former “eight year olds” or “ten year olds”
but they seem to recognize her... Many
students tell her what they remember

The best things about the School of
the Cathedral are the people who are part
of it. It has been a pleasure and a privilege
to work with colleagues who have become
family and friends. The students and
their families have provided laughter,
sadness, highs, and lows. There have been
births and deaths, weddings, graduations,
celebrations of sacraments, reunions, and
surprise meetings. It all is still happening.
The fun continues.”
For many alumni who recall, Miss
White began as a 3rd grade homeroom
teacher. She stayed in that position for 3
years then moved to teach 5th grade in the
morning and 2nd grade in the afternoon.
After that she taught reading groups all
day from 1st grade to 8th grade and 7th
grade Religion. Finally, she became a 5th
grade homeroom teacher as well as the
social studies teacher for grades 5 and 6,
finally settling in to all grade 5 classes. ■

Mrs. Anne Mekalian,
Cathedral Teacher for 20 Years
& An Inspiration to All
By Susan Hughes Gray, Friend and Colleague
M
rs. Anne Mekalian, Cathedral third grade teacher for 20 years, was
stricken with double pneumonia and then sepsis in March 2011.
Ultimately, this infection resulted in the amputation of both of her
arms and legs below the elbows and knees. With the help of the
physical and occupational therapists at Kernan Hospital as well as the unflagging
support of her devoted fiancé, loving family, and good friends, she has made
remarkable progress over the past year, and continues to be in wonderful spirits!
Mrs. Mekalian is now working toward regaining the ability to drive independently,
but this endeavor will be quite expensive from the standpoint of instruction as well as
an adapted vehicle.
Mrs. Mekalian’s third grade students from 2011-2012 have launched a fundraising
effort to assist her with the costs associated with learning to drive and other medical
needs. To view an inspirational video featuring these students and Mrs. Mekalian,

friends the 2011-2012 Annual Fund donations
totaled over $48,000 for the School of the
Cathedral. Those donors whose gifts were
$500 or more will be recognized on our
