Twenty-Five Years of Cheers
H
ear ye, hear ye ... the King and his court graciously welcome all ye noble knights and
lovely damsels of all ages to the 25th Annual Arizona Renaissance Festival & Artisan
Marketplace. Awaken to an age of honor and chivalry, a time of pure enlightenment that
swept out the dark, medieval malaise of 16th-century Europe and embraced a cultural
rebirth of great art, writing, and philosophy. So, arise and join the spirited pilgrimage
to the foothills of the Superstition Mountains, Apache Junction, for eight consecutive
weekends of revelry, merriment, and mayhem February 9 through March 31 and
President’s Day Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Passing through the gated walls is truly a step back in time to a place of regal
pageantry. Mingle with nearly 2,000 authentically-costumed characters and performers
on the dirt streets of a renaissance village and marketplace replica. Join the King and
his court in the 5,000-seat arena as they preside over a spectacular, full-contact jousting
tournament, where armored knights on charging steeds take up their lances and battle
for the Queen’s honor. Chomp down on a giant roasted turkey leg, and raise your drink
as you cheer on your favorite knight.
Throughout the village marketplace, merchants hawk their wares, selling everything
from clothing to custom ceramics at the 200 storybook shops, tents, studios, and
galleries. Several artisans give demonstrations of their blacksmithing, glassblowing, and
pottery-throwing skills. Royally delicious foods like steak-on-a-stake, vegetable and meat
pies, and decadent desserts are served at the kitchens and pubs that dot the streets.
Enjoy 12 stages of outrageous comedy, music, dance, and artisan presentations, with
150 shows daily. Be sure to pick up a schedule of show times and audience content
when you first enter the village. Then try your hand at the “Old World” games and
people-powered rides, which are spread over the festival’s 30 acres. Watch birds of prey
demonstrate the same unique hunting skills that intrigued nobles of the time.
It’s a full day of non-stop merriment, so come on out ... joust for the fun of it! For
directions, prices, and other information, visit RenFestInfo.com or call 520-463-2700.

To many women, the word
“marriage” has a nice ring to it.
An invisible man married an
invisible woman. The kids were
nothing to look at either.
It was an emotional wedding.
Even the cake was in tiers.
Shotgun wedding—a case of wife or death.

Tucson Sparkles
F
or two sparkling weeks every winter, the Old
Pueblo transforms into a bustling, international
marketplace for buyers, sellers, and spectators
at Tucson’s gem, mineral and fossil showcase.
From February 1–17, 2013, it’s the world’s largest
exhibit and marketplace for jewelry makers, rock
hounds, and natural treasure collectors from
around the globe.
This gem of an event showcases precious
gems, minerals, fossils, beads, and jewelry. It’s
the perfect opportunity to view and purchase
unique pieces, gold, diamonds, and opals.
What started in 1955 as a club show for collectors
and enthusiasts has grown to tens of thousands
of international participants and attendees. Among
the numerous offerings are two cornerstone
shows—the 2013 AGTA (American Gem Trade
Assn.) GemFair Tucson, February 5–10, and the
Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, February 14–17,
both held at the Tucson Convention Center.
For more gem events, visit TucsonShowGuide.com.
