Baskin-Robbins™™ Family
Nearly three-quarters of a century ago, two brothers-in-law
shared a dream to create an innovative ice cream store that
would be a neighbourhood gathering place for families.
Burton “Burt” Baskin and Irvine “Irv” Robbins had a mutual
love of old-fashioned ice cream and the desire to provide
customers a variety of flavours made with ingredients of the
highest quality in a fun, inviting atmosphere.
Since 1945, we’ve introduced more than 1,000 unique,
fun and delicious ice cream flavours. Our original top-selling
flavours like Mint Chocolate Chip and Pralines ‘n Cream
continue to delight millions worldwide. Still, we continue to
consistently introduce new, exciting flavour combinations, as
well as ice cream industry-leading innovations such as
hand-packed ice cream, a unique flavour ribbon technique,
the use of traditional dessert ingredients and the introduction
of mousse-textured ice creams.
From our introduction of signature ice cream cakes and
the growing line of beverages, including our signature
Cappuccino Blast™, our commitment to creating new and
exciting products is unsurpassed in the industry.
Baskin-Robbins™, is the world’s favourite ice cream!

How long have you been a part of the
Baskin-Robbins™ Family?
In March 2014 it will have been 10 years.
What past employment experience do you have
that made you feel confident in becoming a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner?
I'd been in general management with profit and loss
responsibility in service delivery and IT consultancy for different
multinational organisations which had given me a good insight
into what was required for businesses to succeed.
What’s the best thing about being your own boss?
As a franchisee, much is directed by the franchisor,
however, the day-to-day running of the parlour and the
knowledge that ultimately the performance of the business
lies with oneself is empowering.
What's your favourite Baskin-Robbins™ product?
Jamoca® Almond Fudge.
How many hours a week do you invest in
your business?
Typically between 45 and 50 hours and then many more for
quarterly BAS returns and at the end of financial year.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your business?
There are many! One, that it is profitable. Another that stands
out for me is the opportunity to offer the first job to many young
people and to see them develop into assured, capable and
independent people - this included my own children. I also
enjoy being part of the local community, engaging in friendly
conversation with loyal customers over the years. Essentially,
I find this a happy place to work, with wonderful staff and a
clientele that walks through the door ready to treat themselves
to an indulgence.
How helpful have you found Baskin-Robbins™ as far
as offering support when you were getting started?
I started out in the business a long time ago now, and as
I recall the support was sufficient. On reflection, the most
learning and support probably came from talking to other
franchisees who helped in various ways such as sharing advice
and ideas based on real operating experience as well as
bailing me out with stock whenever I had messed up an order.
What is the most challenging aspect of your business?
The challenge lies in the relentlessness of the 7 days-a-week,
365-days-a-year responsibility. The buck stops with you as
the franchise owner and events like refrigeration hiccups,
security calls in the middle of the night, stepping in to cover
a shift when a staff member is unwell and so on, are all part
of the picture.
What does a typical day in the life of a Franchise
Partner look like?
I usually arrive to set up the parlour around 9:30 in the
mornings and leave by 18:15, Mondays to Fridays. From
time to time I do work evening and weekend shifts too. The
bookkeeping, rostering, administrative work and so on is
done in the evening and at the weekend.
What made you decide to invest in a franchise?
As a new immigrant to Australia I was looking to start my own
business. Quickly recognising the differences between this
market and where I'd been, I considered a franchise with its
built-in systems and track record as a sound entry point to a
business in Australia.
What advice would you offer someone thinking
about becoming a Franchise Partner?
Research and do thorough due diligences before committing.
Educate yourself as best you can to know the business you're
getting into. Understand the financials of this business; look at
the lifestyle you will be taking on and understand the impact
on you and your family. Consider doing the Griffith University
course on franchising, and tap into the wealth of knowledge of
current and past franchisees.
What attracted you to a Baskin-Robbins™ franchise?
I had looked into a number of different franchises and
independent businesses beforehand and this business
attracted me for a number of reasons including that it was
an existing business with a track record, it's a "simple"
business with minimal wastage and cash flow positive. The
location was good, the cost was right and the return on my
investment was attractive.
What personal qualities do you think a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner must possess?
It's important to be self-sufficient, pragmatic and flexible and
enjoy wearing many hats, but before that, being people,
customer-centric is what this business is all about.

How long have you been a part of the
Baskin-Robbins™ Family?
Since 2010.
What past employment experience do you have
that made you feel confident in becoming a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner?
I have been involved in business development for 20 years.
I have coached and managed staff for most of this time. I
wanted to own a parlour where I could use my experience
in sales to coach and mentor my team.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your business?
Seeing my staff become better team members but also good
people. I have several staff who have been with me since day
one and I recently had three staff return to me after travelling
and working full time elsewhere.
What is the most challenging aspect of your business?
Ensuring that I keep all customer’s happy. I like to support the
local community so I try very hard to support all requests for
sponsorship or support in some way.
What made you decide to invest in a franchise?
I own another business which I have built from scratch, but I
wanted to experience the franchise model where systems and
quality assurance are already in place.
What attracted you to a Baskin-Robbins™ franchise?
I looked at several ice-cream vendors but I chose
Baskin-Robbins™ for two reasons:
1) Great product
2) Ability to support a suburban store
What personal qualities do you think a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner must possess?
When purchasing a franchise you must put your ego to the side
and let the people who have developed the franchise offer
you their experience. Therefore you have to be adaptable.
Once your parlour is up and running you will have plenty of
opportunity to stamp your own personality on the parlour based
on your involvement in the local community.
How many hours a week do you invest in your business?
The business is 7 days a week and opens until 10pm at night,
so I am thinking of it all the time. You need to be able to handle
getting calls from staff at any time. I manage the business and
don’t work that much in the parlour. I would spend approx 10hrs
in parlour and do 15-20hrs at home managing the business
i.e. dealing with sponsorship and local store marketing activities,
wages, banking, bookkeeping, recruiting staff, ensuring systems
are being followed and developed, liaising with Baskin-Robbins™,
ordering stock, roster etc.
How helpful have you found Baskin-Robbins™ as far
as offering support when you were getting started?
I have had help available to me from the very first day I
opened the parlour and whilst I like to handle most situations
myself it is nice to know whenever I have asked for help, it was
offered immediately, 7 days a week.
What does a typical day in the life of a Franchise
Partner look like?
I take my kids to school, I make sure I know who is working
and what is planned for that day at the parlour. I would drop
into the parlour just about every day even on weekends if I am
around. I have CCTV so I can see the parlour and the register
from anywhere in the world.
What advice would you offer someone thinking
about becoming a Franchise Partner?
Ensure your parlour location is great.
Ask yourself the following:
1.Can you manage people and mentor them to do better.
2.Am I prepared to work hard to develop a local community presence.
3.Can I handle the fact the parlour opens every day and I have
to be able to be contactable 7 days a week to deal with
whatever issues arise.
What’s the best thing about being your own boss?
I like the autonomy and flexibility to manage the business in the
way that suits my lifestyle. I like taking my kids to and from school
if I want to. I don’t miss any of their activities. I love that.
What's your favourite Baskin-Robbins™ product?
Choc Chip Cookie Dough.

How long have you been a part of the
Baskin-Robbins™ Family?
Since 2009.
What past employment experience do you have
that made you feel confident in becoming a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner?
I’ve previously worked in Administration and Management
including HR. This has given me the skills needed for the
back-end of being a Franchise Partner. Whilst I have a manager
for my parlours, I mostly take care of recruitment, training, rosters,
ordering and the bookwork for all three parlours. I do work behind
the counter with my trainees, around 8 hours p/w or more when
needed, and my previous customer service skills are an asset
when dealing with our guests.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your business?
I like the satisfaction of watching my team grow and develop; this
coupled with providing a fun and relaxing environment for our
guests to be treated to the amazing selection of flavours we offer,
I find enjoyable and very rewarding.
What made you decide to invest in a franchise?
I wanted to join an established brand with existing systems in
place that would allow me the flexibility to spend time with my
young family.
What advice would you offer someone thinking
about becoming a Franchise Partner?
Understand that you’re not just buying a job, you’re investing into
an established brand with existing systems and expectations in
place. You also need to be actively involved in the running of your
business. The more you put in the more you get out!!
“we were attracted
to the quality, iconic
product and proven
international
franchise system.”
- As told by Renee.
What attracted you to a Baskin-Robbins™ franchise?
My family and I LOVE ice cream and were regular visitors to the
Baskin-Robbins™ Helensvale parlour. This soon became the first of
3 parlours that we invested in. We were attracted to the quality,
iconic product and proven, international franchise system.
Another positive is there’s minimal waste!
What personal qualities do you think a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner must possess?
You must have a willingness to succeed and enjoy meeting
people. Great guest service is also a must-have!
What’s the best thing about being your own boss?
I enjoy the flexibility of working the hours that I choose. I have 3
parlours so I have employed a manager to assist with the day to
day running of the parlours.
What's your favourite Baskin-Robbins™ product?
It’s so difficult to choose with such a variety of products - I love
our custom ice cream cakes, they make our guest’s celebrations
extra special!
How many hours a week do you invest in
your business?
I spend around 10 hours in the parlours a week. I have a
manager that looks after the day to day operations and this allows
me the time to look after the business end - orders, rosters, wages
and general paperwork which is around 2.5 days per week over
my three parlours.

How long have you been a part of the
Baskin-Robbins™ Family?
Since 2003.
What past employment experience do you have
that made you feel confident in becoming a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner?
I used to work in Home Care, looking after the needs of clients,
so I’m naturally good with people. At Baskin-Robbins™, guest
service is really important, so in general you have to love people!
Training is available for most aspects of the business, however
there is a need to have sound business knowledge to assist with
the day to day running of the business.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your business?
Being my own boss means I get flexibility in the hours that I
choose to work. I’ve also enjoyed watching my parlour flourish
over the last 10 years. We’ve built up a remarkable business and
we’re extremely proud of our success.
What is the most challenging aspect of your business?
Keeping up with the demand of my ice cream cakes! I also need
to be available at some capacity at all times, whether it’s fielding
calls from my staff to answer any questions they may have or
decisions that need to be made when I’m not in my parlour.
What made you decide to invest in a franchise?
I wanted to be part of an established business but also liked the
autonomy of being my own boss.
What attracted you to a Baskin-Robbins™ franchise?
We did a lot of independent research and liked the idea of
joining an internationally-known and respected brand. We
considered other ice cream franchises but decided that
Baskin-Robbins™ was the best fit for us for various reasons but
especially the great, quality ice cream flavour varieties.
What personal qualities do you think a
Baskin-Robbins™ Franchise Partner must possess?
You need to have a positive and happy disposition and a love
for all things ice cream!!
What’s your favourite Baskin-Robbins™ product?
Our extensive range of ice cream cakes. I love creating my own
designs and they’re really popular in Mackay.
How many hours a week do you invest in
your business?
It varies, but I average around 50 hours a week, this includes
making cakes, guest service and paperwork.
Franchise
Partners since
2003
What does a typical day in the life of a Franchise
Partner look like?
I’m sure it’s different for every Franchise Partner, but for me, I
arrive at my parlour around 8am so I can make a start on the
cake orders and get the parlour open for trade. I rely on my
stewards for most of the Guest service and would have up to
5 Stewards that work weekdays and more on weekends. I
manage the accounts during my working day so don’t have to
invest much time on this ‘after hours.’
What advice would you offer someone thinking
about becoming a Franchise Partner?
Do your due diligence. Understand that to succeed you must
invest time in your business.
- As told by Julie.
