BEATLEMANIA NOW TIt is sometimes hard to believe that the 1960s were so long ago, and filled with turbulent, seemingly permanent change. For those who lived through many of the events and pop culture figures, few had the impact on so much as did the Beatles. Beatlemania Now, the 75-minute musical tribute at the Tropicana, continues through October 5. The show demonstrates how the “Fab Four” captured the music, styles and controversies of that tumultuous decade. The multiple phases of the Beatles’ career are showcased in various stages, with appropriate costume changes. STILL THE SAME Thanks to owners Liberia Giulietti and her brothers Joe and Vinny Scotto, Nino’s Pizza Festival is the same as it ever was. If you have bought a slice of pizza within the last 23 years, you can rest assured that it will taste the same and be prepared with the same quality ingredients. Nino’s has been a family enterprise since their parents purchased the business in 1988. Giulietti says their method to guaranteeing quality and consistency is simple…never put someone in charge who is not one of the three siblings. Joe is the main cook throughout the day. Do you remember watching the Beatles for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964? The hundreds of screaming girls in the audience predicted the enormous impact they would have on the musical world. A fascinating compilation of film footage takes the audience through the decade’s evolution, from easy innocence to the tragic assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The era of free love is everywhere, evidenced by the peace movement of the late 1960s and the continuing protests of the Vietnam War. Watching this terrific film footage is a reminder of how brilliant the lyrics were for their time, which explains their endurance and continued popularity almost 50 years later. The long pizzeria has abundant seating for 40 at 10 booths for a quick, casual meal. The large takeout counter has a full menu listed on the wall. The multicolor six-panel paper menus look like beautiful works of art. Each section is designated with banners that depict the Italian flag colors-red, white and green. There are also beautiful scenic shots of the Italian coastline and its villages, plus numerous pictures of delectable items that will have your mouth watering to try them. There are few places that will offer the same great daily specials for $5.99. Giulietti says that, for example, one can order a special pasta, chicken Caesar salad or dinner platter-without a salad-that also includes garlic bread and a beverage. Although specials change regularly, she says that if a customer requests something as a special, she has a good heart and will usually keep the price lower. Three of the more popular Italian dishes served are the Baked Ziti, Meat Lasagna and Chicken Parmigiana with spaghetti, all priced at $12.50 with bread and salad. Portions are large, and Giulietti says that even the small strombolis ($10-$10.50) are enough for two to three people. The larger ones ($17.50-$18) will feed five. That “generosity” extends to the list of subs ($5.75-$6.75) on long, rectangular rolls. Giulietti says, “Our subs are one size, but they really give our customers something to grab onto. Everyone leaves full after eating one of our subs.” Although all of Nino’s food is good, Giulietti claims the superstar items are the PAGE 6 The playlist features many of the expected songs. These include “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Yesterday”, “I Get By with a Little Help From My Friends” and “Here Comes the Sun”, representing their early era. Moving through the decade, they transition to the psychedelic movement with songs like “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, “Revolution”, “Penny Lane”, “Imagine” and “I Am the Walrus”. The show concluded with “Hey Jude”, with the crowd singing along and swaying back and forth. Of the four, I thought “John Lennon” looked the most authentic and had the strongest voice. He was also a really good musician on both the guitar and piano. Beatlemania Now shows through October 5 are 8:00 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday; 9 p.m. on Saturday and 7 p.m. on Sundays; a Wednesday afternoon matinee is offered at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $34, and may be purchased at the Tropicana box office of www.ticketmaster.com or 1-800-745-3000. TV Atlantic MAGAZINE South Jersey Matters By Todd Cohen Send your news to Todd Cohen, SJ Matters, p.O. Box 3351, Margate, nJ 08402-3351 It’s Great Being Back In CITY Our Home TownSUPPORT with OCEAN CONTINUES OF Friends and Family BREAST CANCER AWARENESS Ocean City will continue its support of Breast Cancer Awareness by painting pink emblems in the end zones and along yard markers on the grounds of Carey Stadium here, Oct. 7. The Breast Cancer Awareness symbols will decorate the football field during a game between Ocean City and Millville starting 7 p.m. The awareness promotion is the idea of Mike Lenhardt, who lost his first wife to breast cancer in 2003. Mike noticed that the color pink, a symbol of breast cancer awareness, was featured throughout the area on pins, athletic uniforms and promotional signage. Mike is Ocean City’s Supervisor of Recreation Maintenance. One of his facilities is Carey Stadium. Three years ago, he decided it would be effective to begin a tradition of “painting the football field pink” for one game each season to draw attention to Breast Cancer Awareness and raise funds. He presented the idea to High School officials who immediately agreed. The unique promotion supports the Carolyn J. Ochs Memorial Assistance Fund that helps breast cancer patients pay their everyday bills while going through treatment. A similar organization helped Mike meet his mortgage payments and take care of basic needs after his wife passed away. Fund members will distribute literature during the game and monies from the concession stand will be donated to support those with breast cancer. Ocean City employees are making donations through their union and part of the gate receipts will be donated. The football players will wear pink wristbands and cheerleaders will sell lollipops for the cause. For information, call the City Public Relations Office, 609-525-9300. FISHING REPORT CATCH OF THE WEEK Flounder season ended quietly this week, and the best thing is, very few mourned itsʼ passing. Tog are so abundant in the bay that anglers had switched their targeted species a couple of weeks ago. Green crabs, the preferred delight for the hefty fish have finally become available, but the shortage forced those in the know to the bay rocks and sod banks to scavenge for calicos and fiddlers. Outspoken anglers, vendors and commercial marinas have expressed opinions about the proposed flounder season for 2012. Colleen McLaughlin, Miguel Angel Calgua from Chichicastenango, Guatemala and Ed Arentz of Ventnor with their tog. First time in America fishing for Miguel! John Chickadell of E.P. Sales, Ventnor, said “People forget that fall is hurricane season, and storms keep anglers from going offshore for flounder a great deal of the time. The season should open in April when people have cabin fever and are ready to fish!” Cory Solomon of Captain Andyʼs stopped by the dock during Margateʼs Funfest to pose for a picture. Gamely wearing a flounder costume and talking around a white bucktail in his mouth, Cory said “The bite was on big time until hurricane Irene, then it stopped. I usually get my big ones in early May.” Fall of 2010 brought hurricane Earl and a huge Northeaster four weeks later. Undoubtedly, these experiences will serve as a basis for recommendations regarding next seasonʼs length and flounder size limits. Tog however, are currently keeping everyone happy. They are a fun fish to catch, require only a quick run from the dock, and even at a one fish per person daily limit, can easily provide dinner with 20 inch four pounders common. Tyler Bennett of Northfield and Barry Winokur of Margate both bagged four and a quarter pound 20 inch tog this week. Tyler is just biding his time until big stripers start hitting. Ed Arentz of Ventnor was so excited to introduce his visitor from Guatemala to tog fishing, he picked Miguel Angel Calgua of Chichicastenango up from the airport and went straight to the boat. Even jet lag didnʼt prevent Miguel from catching a keeper! (609) 822-6819 9211 Amherst Ave. • Margate, NJ PAGE 8 ~ Just Ten Minutes From Ocean City! Harrah’s and Borgata During these most trying financial times, when many A. C. casinos are struggling to survive, you would think that owners and senior management would be very sensitive to the numbers of customers their marketing departments are attracting, or not attracting, to their door. Not so! At their own peril they continue to ignore dumb marketing practices that negatively affect their businesses. Instead of effective and efficient sales and marketing departments, because of the way some dummies are currently operating them, they should be designated as “The Sales Prevention Departments.” Here are few examples why: Casino promos with little price/value for the customer. We once received a casino mailer that we had zero dollars in a cash back offer. That sort of makes you want to return in a hurry. Likewise, when an offer amounts to a paltry $5 bucks when you have to spend more than that in gas to collect. Junk give-a-ways also do not do it for us. We would rather get cash back or free slot play which is the reason why we go to a casino in the first place. The Borgata excels at giving their customers good value. Casino promos with severe restrictions. At times you need a contract lawyer to decipher some of the small print on some casino offers. It probably gives some of the would be “marketing gurus” a sense of personal power to be able to attempt to control customers as sheep. Days-of-theweek restrictions (we prefer going mid-week to avoid very busy weekends with long lines and vehicular traffic.) detract business. Likewise, do severe time-of-day restrictions which better suit the fantasy of a marketing nit-wit than the needs of customers. Closing casino player’s clubs at 7 PM is another example of short-sightedness. Throwing customers out of your club in the middle of a Phillies game is also quite dumb. Ward's Pastry has the best flavor in the neighborhood. Located in Ocean City. See page 18. Casino promos that are extremely difficult to collect. Harrah’s and Bally’s are some of the worst. You have to clip a coupon, go to their (difficult to find) casino cage, stand in line, offer your ID, just to get another coupon to place in your far away slot machine along with your player’s card. Sometimes this time consuming and annoying process to collect does not work. Unlike Harrah’s and Bally’s, where lots of trees are killed with all the paperwork involved to collect, The Borgata excels at making it easy to collect. At The Borgata useless paperwork is eliminated; so are long lines and grumpy clerks. Nothing could have made 3EB happier! 3EB, however, have experienced no comparable loss. Instead, they have gained artistic clarification -- and, surprisingly, a fan base larger than ever. 9/30 - Trump Taj Mahal - So You Think You Can Dance Tour: Don’t miss your chance to see your favorite dancers perform the most memorable Season 8 routines live! Weeks If you desire to have good time management then you need to have a strategy or an action plan. Following these strategies will help you get the most out of your days. First thing to do is Prioritize your work. Start each day by ranking the things that you must do. Starting with the most important and unpleasant tasks first, then go from there. Those things that can wait for later that day should be listed towards the bottom of your list. Don't make your list too long because there are only so many hours in a day and you don't want to feel like you will never get it all accomplished. Second thing is to Assign Work Time Frame for each task. At first this might not seem realistic but it is mostly so that you will have some sort of idea how long it will take to finish each task. You will find that once you start a task, it won't really take very long unless it is a big project. If so, then break it down so that you can see some progress. PAGE 38 Third Be Flexible. Unexpected things come up from time to time so if you have to stop to take care of some other matter, do not worry and stress out if you don't accomplished a certain task in the time frame you set. Just like the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day" so make sure you allow for those times when things come up. Don't let these things such as phone calls, important emails, kids and life in general frustrate you, the important thing to remember is that you are making progress on your list. how much you really can accomplish each day and then enjoy some time with family and friends. This is your only viable option no matter where you are working, this is the only way to accomplish anything worthwhile. Liberty Compromise when necessary. In this way the task will get done and you won't waste time putting it off because you can't accomplish it yourself. Everyone has limitations and if you realize what those are then you will know Fourth thing is to Say No what you can work on later to improve those skills or know in advance what if it isn't important. Whether you work from home or out tasks you will need help with. of the home there are things that can distract us and waste time. Limit small Learning to manage your time is not to talk with co-workers, family, friends, stress your day so remember to relax etc. while you are working. Respect and learn as you go. The more you pracyour decision to make a plan and stick tice managing your time, the better you to it. Others will need to understand will get at it. Time management is so that that if it isn't something that needs to you will take control of your days and see be taken care of right this minute then it can wait. Fifth is to Delegate. Remember that you probably can't do everything yourself so if there is a task that you might not be very good at or like doing and there is someone that can do the task then by all means TV Atlantic MAGAZINE TV Atlantic MAGAZINE PAGE 39 PAGE 40 TV Atlantic MAGAZINE
