Actually it was a tie! The Swizzle Inn in Bailey’s Bay, Bermuda’s oldest pub opened in 1932 in a homestead from the 1600’s, and the swizzles have been flowing ever since. They didn’t call it Black Seal at first. Up until World War I, it was only sold from the barrel and folks brought their own containers for a fill up. Eventually, the black rum was sold in champagne bottles reclaimed from the British Officers Mess and the corks sealed with black sealing wax – hence the name Black Seal was born!
