The Tale Of Two Swizzles
What came first the rum swizzle or the Swizzle Inn? Actually
it was a tie! The Swizzle Inn in Bailey’s Bay, Bermuda’s oldest
pub opened in 1932 in a homestead from the 1600’s, and the
swizzles have been flowing ever since. Family owned since
1950’s

Things got too easy, so now there are two Swizzle Inns. The
Swizzle South Shore in Warwick opened in 2006. Life ain’t so
easy now! No worries, both have the same great swizzles, great
food and their own casual fun “pubby” atmosphere to keep
you coming back!
The Swizzle Inns are legendary to both locals and visitors and

The Rum Swizzle

the evils of drinking, I
gave up reading!”

Known as Bermuda’s national
drink, the rum swizzle is a
combination of Gosling’s Black Seal
and Gold Rum with various juices
and other ingredients. Served in a
pitcher or cocktail shaker with ice
and strained into cocktail glasses.

Goslings Black Seal Rum
The Gosling family first arrived in Bermuda in 1806 and in 1860 launched
the first of Bermuda’s black rum. They didn’t call it Black Seal at first.
Up until World War I, it was only sold from the barrel and folks brought
their own containers for a fill up. Eventually, the black rum was sold in
champagne bottles reclaimed from the British Officers Mess and the corks
sealed with black sealing wax – hence the name Black Seal was born!
It is a key additive to Bermuda Fish Chowder, adds the tempest to
our other island favourite the Dark’n Stormy, and of course is the chief
ingredient in our famous rum swizzle.
