Sometimes it takes a few times to make it, so don’t give up. If a student does pass the Art Visions test they will be in Art Visions for the 2016-17 school year. We have a few pieces of artwork on display at The Chapman Cultural Center for the month of March for Youth Art Month. It is a great show of student artwork if you get a chance to go by to see it. The Art Visions class has been busy making donkey piñatas to go along with their study of Latin American art. The students have done an amazing job and I look forward to displaying their finished 3-D artifacts. My regular art classes have continued to learn about famous artists of long ago and present day. The students have learned about the artist and replicated an artwork in a similar style of the artist. You can see the final results of our talented students now on display. We are now beginning our spring and Summer art projects and I am looking forward to seeing what our amazing PGS art students produce! Thank you for your continued support of the arts. Mrs. Michels The Bear Facts 2 March 2016 Bug bites and stings usually are just annoying, causing temporary discomfort and pain, but no serious or lasting health problems. But sometimes, they can cause infections that require treatment and allergic reactions that can be serious, even fatal. Parents should know the signs of an infection or allergic reaction, and when to get medical care. Inform all caregivers if a child has any history of complications so they know what to do in the event of a bug bite or sting. Handling Bee and Wasp Stings A bee will usually leave behind a stinger attached to a venom sac. Try to remove it as quickly as possible using a scraping motion, without pinching the venom sac at the end. (Wasps don’t leave their stingers in the skin after stinging, which means they can sting more than once.) · Wash the area carefully with soap and water. Do this two to three times a day until the skin is healed. · Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth or a cold, wet washcloth for a few minutes. · Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain. · For pain and itching, give an over-the-counter oral antihistamine if your child’s doctor says it’s OK; follow dosage instructions for your child’s age and weight. You could also apply a corticosteroid cream or calamine lotion to the sting area. · A sting anywhere in the mouth needs immediate medical attention because stings in oral mucous membranes can quickly cause severe swelling that may block airways. · Seek medical care if you notice a large skin rash or swelling around the sting site, or if swelling or pain persists for more than 3 days, which could indicate an infection. · The following signs may indicate a · serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Use an epinephrine auto-injector if it’s available, and call 911 right away if you notice: · wheezing or difficulty breathing · tightness in throat or chest · swelling of the lips, tongue, or face · dizziness or fainting nausea or vomiting If your child has had an allergic reaction to a bee or wasp sting in the past, see your doctor for a prescription for an epinephrine auto-injector. The children have worked very hard this nine weeks. They really enjoyed their unit on the Solar System. The students really got into learning about the sun, moon and the planets. They were full of questions and soaked up all the information they could about the planets. It was a great time of learning for everyone. They also enjoyed learning about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and many of the symbols for the United States of America. They are a very smart inquisitive class. Below are a couple of stories the students chose to write about during this nine weeks period. Again, Mrs. Cranford and Mrs. Thomas are very proud of them. Dancing by Ellie I love to dance. We are learning tap, jazz, and ballet. Ballet is my favorite because we dance like butterflies. I wear pink shoes and a pink leotard. My teacher’s name is Miss Jennifer. My Family by Cailen My mama get us dressed. My sister, Erika loves fashion. My daddy is in the Army. My brother, Alex loves Star Wars. As you know, my name is Cailen and I love to draw. My brother, Aiden loves Lion Guard. I love my family. Mrs. Malone Mrs. Malone’s class has been working very hard at improving lots of skills this 3rd nine weeks. We had so much fun exploring new facts about the sun, the moon, and our solar system. Our class became excellent scientists and did some fun crater experiments too! We also learned how astronauts live, work and explore in space. And we had a lot of fun creating some new “extra- terrestrial friends!” Enjoy our writings that we created about our Alien Friends! If a space alien came to visit me, I would give him a name and it would be Lucas. I will teach him how to play a board game and the game is Monopoly. I’d tell him to give me a tour around his spaceship. He is my BFF and I will eat pizza with it. I can teach it to be nice. I can tell him to hide under Mrs. Malone’s bed! I love my alien! Riley Barbare If a space alien came to visit me I would take it to school. I would feed it space goo. I would put him in my mom’s bed to scare her. I would take it hunting with me. I would teach it how to shoot. Tanner Owens If a space alien came to visit me its name would be Arvy. I would cook it some mash potatoes. I would ask it if it wanted to stay the night. Her color of her eyes would be green. Destiny Jackson If a space alien came to visit me I would go to Gravitopia with him. We would jump a lot. We will color a picture together. I will play with him. If it is mean, I will make it go back home. Colton Doremus If a space alien came to visit me I would help it fix its spaceship. I would hide it in my mama and daddy’s bed and I would name it Gloria. But I would have to say good bye. Maggie Humphries The Bear Facts 7 March 2016 1st Grade continued... Mrs. Ross Wow! Where does the time go? We have been having such fun this third nine weeks. We have learned a lot of interesting information this winter. We have learned about measurement, time, 2-D and 3-D shapes. In science, we have learned all about space. We learned about the 5 outer planets in the solar system. They are giant gas and ice planets. We have also learned about the sun and the moon. The children have enjoyed reading about the sun, moon, stars and planets. We learned that there are eight planets and they all revolve around the sun. It is the most important star because it gives Earth light and heat. In Social Studies, we have learned about America’s different presidents and have begun to learn about our national symbols. The children have really loved learning different facts about some of our most celebrated presidents. Our main focus was George Washington, and Abe Lincoln. I am very proud of all my children. They are working very hard and making great progress. Keep up the great work!!! Below are some of our writings from this nine weeks: Ninja Bread Man One day, I made a ninja bread man. That ninja bread man popped out of the oven. He ran. I ran after him. He got away! By: RJ Spring In spring, I will plant flowers. We go to Lowes and my daddy lets me get whatever I want. After we plant flowers I help spread mulch. Mt daddy cuts the grass. The sun stays out longer and I get to play longer. By: MaKenzie My MawMaw My MawMaw is good to us. We like her. She is nice. When we go out to her house she takes us places. She lets us eat candy. I love her. By: Savannah Mrs. Wyatt Well, the year has come and is almost gone! My first graders definitely have Spring Fever! We have had a great nine weeks learning many new and exciting skills. In science, we finished our unit on the Sun and the Moon. The students enjoyed learning facts about each one and illustrating the moon phases. In addition to science, the students have been sharpening their math skills by learning to tell time to the hour and half hour as well as identify and compose 3D shapes such as cylinders and rectangular prisms. In the fourth nine weeks, we will begin learning how to add and subtract two-digit numbers. My students are so excited about learning these challenging skills because it makes them feel like second graders already. Our class has done a fantastic job in class so far this year! We are looking forward to the warm weather and summer vacation that is just around the corner! Moon Facts by Maggie Rogers The moon is a ball of rock. The moon has no air. The moon is dusty. The moon has no plants. The moon has no animals. The moon has holes called craters. There is not a lot of gravity on the moon. Moon Facts by Walker Timms The moon is a ball of rock. No one can live on the moon. No animals can live on the moon. The moon has lots of dust. The moon has lots of gravity. The moon does not have air or water. The Bear Facts 8 March 2016 It is amazing how much our students have learned during the 3rd 9 weeks. They have worked a lot with determining the main idea and supporting details of a story. They have practiced comparing and contrasting different pieces of literature. Second graders have also analyzed characters and created story maps. They have been introduced to many new Language Arts skills this past 9 weeks. They have worked with pronouns, adjectives, and irregular verbs. Students practice these skills throughout the week and in their writing performance tasks. It’s hard to believe that we only have 9 more weeks to help mold the minds of these precious children! In math our second graders have learned how to add 2 and 3 digit numbers. We also learned how to subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers using different strategies. We learned how to borrow and carry. The students have had a great time using manipulatives and drawings to show their work. We learned new and different ways to solve problems. The students have spent a lot of time counting money and learning to tell time. The third nine weeks in Social Studies has been fun and beneficial to our growing students! We have been proactive and created safety posters to help us begin with the end in mind when an emergency occurs. Students also learned about goods and services, going to the bank, how we trade and move goods around countries, as well as studied our state, local, and federal government. Students have enjoyed and worked diligently with friends, writing stories, acting out scenarios, learning about spending and saving money, and figuring out how our government works. Hold on tight as we finish the year and become social studies experts! Our second graders have learned all about weather. We have enjoyed learning about the different kinds of clouds, learning about each season, and observing the weather each day. Students have worked hard observing, gathering data, and tracking the weather. Students also synergized while making Water Cycle projects! They used different materials around the room, worked together in small groups, and created their very own water cycles! In doing these projects, our students were able to learn fun scientific vocabulary terms such as evaporation, precipitation, anemometer, cumulus, orbit, and many others! We’re looking forward to taking on our last two units in science, which will be matter and magnets. Bring on the force! 2nd Grade Writing Samples Ms. Foster’s 2nd Grade Class A Leadership School Did I hear you ask “is there a leadership school around here?” Well my school is the best. We have an amazingly clean school, ice cream, and a very cool playground! Have you ever driven by a school that has litter everywhere? How horrible does that look? Well PGS is the cleanest around. We have a Green Team. When it is Earth Day we all go out and pick up trash. We also have a litter patrol who picks up trash daily. Are you ready for this? Ice cream, ice cream, ice cream! Yes, that’s right! We don’t having baking sales here at PGS, we have the best Hershey’s ice cream. We get excited when we have ice cream. Are you ready for the next best thing? “Weeeeee!” Do you want to go down the slide? It’s recess time! We have a very cool playground! It isn’t just any playground. This one has four slides and an awesome bridge. When it’s raining we play on the computers. When we go outside all of the girls chase the boys. I hope you think my school is amazing! Mattie Bandy Mrs. Quinn’s 2nd Grade Class I turned my “kiss” into a tent because I love camping in the woods! Camping is one of my favorite things to do outside of school. My dad and I go camping in the fall. I enjoy being out in nature with a camp fire and plenty of fresh air. I got to see all the stars in the sky and hear all the animals moving around in the woods. I can’t wait to go camping again soon! Logan Sellars Mrs. Gaskins’ 2nd Grade Class PGS is the Best! I think PGS is the best school around. First, PGS has really good teachers because they are all very kind and nice. Second, PGS is super because we have the 7 Habits. 7 Habits are words that remind you how to be leaders. Third, PGS is amazing because our building is neat. When you walk in the office you see beautiful pictures. I hope you come to PGS one day to see how fantastic it is for yourself! Lilly Harris Mrs. Gaskins’ 2nd Grade Class PGS is the Best! I think PGS is the best school in Spartanburg. PGS is the best because we have fun playgrounds to play on. PGS is also the best because we have a school store where we can buy stuff that makes us feel happy. PGS is also the best because we have friendly staff and an office that keeps us safe. PGS is the best because we have kind principals that are nice. I love PGS! Kamdyn Miller The Bear Facts 9 March 2016 The third nine weeks has been very exciting. We have been very busy and learned so much. The students have worked hard to reach their academic goals this nine weeks. The students also participated in Leadership Day and showed teachers from around the Southeast how PGS are leaders! It’s hard to believe we only have one more nine weeks to go. The students have read many fiction and nonfiction stories. They’ve enjoyed reading about many of our social studies and science topics such as migration, water, The Civil War, and Civil Rights. The students have also done a lot of research on these topics as well. They worked hard and are proud to show off their Civil War knowledge which was displayed through writing and out in the hall for Leadership Day. Third graders have been learning about fractions and graphs in math. Along with that, they are still perfecting their multiplication facts and solving word problems using multiplication and division. The students have loved doing all of our science experiments. We learned about how and why different animals use camouflage to protect themselves or hunt for food. The students really enjoyed being able to see the different types of animals owls eat by looking at owl pellets. The students have also really enjoyed learning about beetles and crayfish through having both of these animals right in our classroom to observe! We are so proud of what the students have accomplished this nine weeks. We have lots more to learn and achieve before the end of the year. The Life of a Union Soldier The life of a Union soldier is very hard. I wake up in a tent every single morning. I have a wormy breakfast and I get ready for war. Boom! The first shot has fired. The battle is harsh and deadly. After the battle, General Ulysses S. Grant marches us to the next battleground. Along the way we pass through towns. The people give us cloth, food, money, and a place to stay for the night. We didn’t have very much supplies. (four years later) We won the war! After four harsh and lonely years (1861-1865) the war is over! Slaves are now free. I can return home now. I leave the camp. The war is over and I’m so happy! Andy Ratterree Mrs. Brown’s Third Grade Class Things About Me There are all kinds of things you don’t know about me. I help my mom cook! Sometimes I make lunch for school. I help make cakes or cupcakes for parties too. I was in a rodeo in Chester. My two cousins have horses. I was in fourth place and was so happy. My horse’s name is Trigger. I was proud of him. My favorite thing to do is READ! I love to read! I have a basket full of books plus three stacks of books. I read every night…it always helps me fall asleep. I have fairy tale books, nonfiction, fiction, and others. My favorite books are nonfiction. I have two Taylor Swift books, animal books, hunting books, and football books. I am a very cool person! Hayden Dill Mrs. Catto’s 3rd Grade Class A Master’s Daughter Hi, my name is Emily Robertson. I am thirteen years old and I live in the south. My father is a plantation owner. He has lots of slaves, but I don’t like it. I think slavery is wrong, but he disagrees. I think people shouldn’t have the right to own someone else. On Tuesday, I tried to help some slaves escape to the north. They didn’t want to leave because they didn’t want to get caught. Yesterday, I helped a slave, named Mary, find her way to the Underground Railroad. I think I will continue to do this as long as my father does not find out. Ella Perry Mrs. Humphries’ Class The Bear Facts 10 March 2016 If your fourth grader has been singing “We the people…,.” then chances are that he or she is doing well in Social Studies. Memorizing parts of historical documents helps students identify them when they get to middle school and high school. Studying the important people and battles of the American Revolution has helped our students understand the motives behind our system of government—and the song is catchy, too! With a lot of hard work, your student may have joined us for our third Pajama-Rama. Research shows that good readers are those who read a lot, and we have high expectations. Students deserve a little fun after working hard! Avery Phillips put himself in the shoes of a soldier camped out at Valley Forge in the winter of 1776-1777 and composed this letter to his parents: Dear Mother and Father, You know the shoes you gave me for the war? They are demolished. All of the army has no shoes. All of the snow is red from the bloody footprints. We might have defeated the British at Saratoga, but setting up camp and living at Valley Forge is hard. I feel ashamed of stealing, but it was for the army. I robbed a farm! I stole eggs, fence posts to burn, and even money I found hidden in the henhouse. I saw one person who ran away. I heard that General Washington is going to have him killed because he betrayed the army. When we train, we walk through towns, and if we are lucky someone may give us a warm cape. Your son, Avery Sophia Knight also wrote a letter from the viewpoint of a soldier: Dear Mother and Father, The winter has been harsh. We have ended up so dangerously low on supplies, we are stealing eggs, hens, and even fence posts. General once sent me to fetch the eggs for breakfast, and while on assignment, I found money under a nest! General was relieved, for we could buy shoes and leather for our feet! We were so happy we thanked the Lord for our good fortune. The Battle of Saratoga was a big turning point. The Battle of Trenton was an easy, bloodless battle. However, our feet were bleeding, cracked, and callused. Wish me luck! Your loving son Here is a version from Arden Silvers: Dear Mother and Father, I have come to write this letter because Valley Forge is terrible. My best friends have mostly died, or are sickly. Every time we walk, it’s like we are leaving bloody prints everywhere. I know that General George Washington will help us, so don’t worry. Though I am afraid I’m going to get hurt in this battle, I still have hope in me. Valley Forge is becoming a turning point to the General and me. We will stick together no matter what happens to us. I am a little sick and we don’t really have any medicine. The women are very helpful to us, though. I don’t know how anything is going to end up, but I hope you have me in your prayers. Sincerely, Your son Here is David Sorensen’s letter: Dear Mother and Father, I’m at Valley Forge in a hen house looking for eggs for breakfast. My feet are bleeding very badly. I’m standing on my hat to keep my feet off the snow, but it’s scraping my wounds and it’s very painful. General Washington keeps pushing us to go forward. I was shot at the Battle of Saratoga, so I have a limp in my leg. Many men are sick and some have died. I am very fortunate that I have not gotten sick. One man deserted us, but we caught him and put him in jail. We are low on warm clothing. I was thinking about deserting, but I know it’s wrong to do it. So, I decided not to run away. Best regards, David The Bear Facts 11 March 2016 The fifth graders have had a busy nine weeks. We had our last fifth grade music performance for the school. It was great! We did a Jousting themed show. In Social Studies, we have been studying World War I, the Great Depression, and WWII. In Math, we have been learning different content depending on the class. In Language Arts, we have had many lessons on Close Reading while focusing on comprehension. In Science, we have been studying Mixtures and Solutions. We have had some cool experiments with kool-aid! Next, we will be enjoying science experiments in the Science Lab, dealing with Forces and Motion. We have had a great nine weeks! Enjoy some of the Pourquio Tales that our students have written in their reading class. How The Lion Got His Mane Long ago there was a lion and he thought he was the king. The other animals thought otherwise. One day the lion was walking a stumbled across a monkey, giraffe, and bird and they all said you’re a nobody. The lion said to the monkey, giraffe, and bird one day you will respect me. That was the last time the lion was heard from again for 5 years. The lion went to many places to hide. He would not stay in one place for a long time so the other animals would not get suspicious. The lion was gone for five years and nobody noticed. The lion made no friends the five years he was gone. When he got back to the old jungle nobody noticed him except the monkey, giraffe, and bird. The bird said what is that on your face. It looks amazing. The monkey and giraffe agreed that it looked amazing. They asked the Lion, “what can we do for you?” The lion said “I told you! You would praise me one day.” From this day, the lion is still the king of the jungle. By Thomas How The Star Fish Became Star One day a long, long, time ago in a small city in the ocean called Merwood where all the best animal actors lived and that’s where the magical mermaid lived as well. There was a musical called “The Star”, and all the fish came to try out. There was Roy the shark, Sally the sword fish, Crush the sea turtle, and the lonely fish, He was the smallest fish ever!!! His name was “Splishy Splashy”. He had no friends. He was just a small, plain white fish. Who was So boring, lonely, and a tiny. So when he swam in to audition everybody teased him saying “look at little squirt!” and “He can`t be a star! He is not even a cool fish like me! So he sat down all alone. So the magical mermaid named Aquafelisha and she said why are you so sad? He said no one thinks I can be a star, and he wished that he could be a star. Oh how I wish I could be a star. So Aquafelisha took it to literally and turned him into a star shaped fish. She turned him bright red and a tiny bit bigger. She said Now! You are a star fish. Just the way you wanted. It turns out that he got the part in the musical. So from now on Aquafelisha and Splishy Splashy are best friends. By: Olivia The Bear Facts 12 March 2016 News to Assist You from Mia Silvers, Assistant Principal How can The Leader in Me help students manage the day to day duties, responsibilities and expectations they are expected to perform? If all students applied the 7 Habits and Highly Effective Principles they learned at school to every aspect of their lives, how would this enhance their lives and those around them? Let’s look at the expectations for students at PGS and relate those expectations to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In many of the examples below, parents play a major role in helping students “be ready” to meet the challenging demands of school and life in general. • • • • • • • Habit 1- Be Proactive (You’re in charge) Habit 2- Begin With the End in Mind (Have a plan) Habit 3- Put First Things First (Work first, then play) Habit 4- Think Win-Win (Everyone can win) Habit 5- Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood (Listen then talk ) Habit 6- Synergize (Together is better) Habit 7- Sharpen the Saw (Balance is best- mental, physical, social and emotional) Student’s Duties/Expectations Come to school every day ready to learn Be on time Be Prepared (books, materials, etc.) Establish meaningful relationships with others (peers, teachers, etc.) Follow classroom rules Model good behavior Focus and participate during classroom instruction Complete all classwork and homework Study for tests Give good effort Get involved (school roles, jobs, clubs, etc.) Showcase talents and skills Be Creative Be a good friend/Stand up for others Exhibit leadership skills Have fun, laugh and be inspired The Bear Facts 13 Habit Related to this Skill Habits 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 Habits 1, 3, 4 and 6 Habits 1, 2 and 3 Habits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Habits 1 and 4 Habits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Habits 1, 3 and 4 Habits 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 Habits 1, 2, 3 and 4 Habits 1, 2, 4 and 6 Habits 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 Habits 1, 4, 6 and 7 Habits 1, 2, 4 and 7 Habits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Habits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Habits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 March 2016 If I had to sum up this year with just one word, it would be LEADERSHIP! We have seen so many students using their 7 Habits at school and showing true leadership through their actions. Hearing elementary aged children speak so intelligently about using the 7 Habits is a true source of pride for me and all the adults in our building. We’re growing leaders, one student at a time, and we’re always searching for ways to reinforce those skills in our students. Our school’s partnership with Bojangles has given us the opportunity to recognize student leaders who are truly making a difference. I’m proud to present to you the list of BOJANGLES STAR LEADERS for the third nine weeks. These students were chosen based on their demonstration of the 7 Habits and Leadership skills. The past 9 weeks have been very busy, but exciting for all of us! We just learned recently that we received the Palmetto Gold and the Palmetto Silver Awards from the South Carolina State Department of Education. The Palmetto Gold is awarded each year to schools who have overall academic achievement. The Palmetto Silver is awarded for schools who are closing the achievement gap. We are proud to have received this recognition! On February 18thand 19th, our school was selected to participate in the South Carolina Leader in Me Symposium at the Spartanburg Marriott. Pauline-Glenn Springs was a school-tour site, hosting over 200 guests from across the United States during our Leadership Day. 100% of our students participated in Leadership Day events, which included in preparing for the day, serving as greeters, speakers, tour guides, and leaders of talent. The visitors were in awe of our Lighthouse School, and most importantly our amazing students! I continue to receive emails and contacts from other schools within and outside of South Carolina requesting information and materials that can be replicated and used at their schools. We have so much to be proud of! I am happy to report that we reached and exceeded our Leadership Wildly Important Goal (WIG) for the second 9 weeks. We now have 100% of our students who have school-wide leadership roles. We will be celebrating the attainment of this goal by having a school-wide picnic on Friday, April 1st. We are continuing as a school to work on improving reading comprehension. Encourage your child to read as much as possible! This will help us to reach our individual, class, grade level, and school goals for this upcoming grading period! As you are aware, District 6 is going through the AdvancED accreditation process this year. PaulineGlenn Springs will be receiving a site visit on Wednesday, March 30th, as part of this self-reflective process. We are proud of our school and District Six and appreciate the input of all of our stakeholders during preparation for this visit.
