the Hebrew Home opened its doors, its arms and its heart. A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 9 1910 – Beginnings Hymen Goldman was a 25-year-old salesman when he encountered an elderly Jewish man weeping outside a grocery store. Seated on a breadbox, the lonely, dejected man had become homeless following his wife’s death. Goldman discussed the man’s plight with a group of Jewish civic-minded individuals, who began collecting funds, nickels and dimes, to board the gentleman in a widow’s home. The Hebrew Home was born. Hymen Goldman became known as “Mr. Hebrew Home,” and the organization’s top honor bears his name. 1949 1914 – 415 M Street, NW As the number of elderly seeking shelter grew, Bernard Danzansky led fundraising efforts to purchase and convert a brick row house on M Street into the Hebrew Home for the Aged. The mission, as spelled out in the 1916 Certificate of Incorporation, was “to provide a home where food, clothing and shelter shall be furnished free of charge to indigent aged persons of the Hebrew faith.” 1933 1933 – An early activity On Spring Road, Hebrew Home residents benefited from numerous recreational activities organized by the Home’s Ladies Auxiliary, as well as a library housing over 4,000 volumes and daily Yiddish and English newspapers, Jewish “moving pictures,” Torah study classes, Jewish holiday and birthday celebrations, and more. 1925 – 1125 Spring Road, NW 1949 – Passover Seder Within a decade, there was mounting realization that a new and larger facility was needed. On November 29, 1925, in dedication ceremonies attended by President Calvin Coolidge, U.S. congressmen, senators, and local government officials, the community celebrated the grand opening of a 35-bed Hebrew Home for the Aged, situated on four acres of land purchased for $50,000. Residents of the Home maintained important religious traditions throughout the Jewish calendar year. Describing the Home’s Seder in 1949, a report noted, “The room was decorated beautifully, and vases of fresh flowers and candelabras were placed on each table, and Mr. Maser [the Home’s Executive Director for 36 years], in his beautiful white gown, conducted the services in a very grand manner.” Celebrate our century of service On Isabelle Press’ 100th birthday: The Hebrew Home has many admirable attributes. However, what makes it such a special place are the kind, caring and dedicated people who work there at all levels – the nurses, aides, dining room servers, receptionists, maintenance people, and on and on. You are always ready with a friendly greeting and willingness to help, no matter how busy you may be. We have seen the tender care you provide to all the patients, regardless of whatever disabilities they may have. We have walked into the TV room and seen an aide sitting next to Isabelle just quietly holding her hand. We have walked into the dining room and seen an aide sitting next to her helping her finish her dinner. When we wheel her down a hallway she gets a “hello Isabelle” from virtually every staff person we pass. We know how difficult your jobs are, so your friendliness and caring are all the more impressive and appreciated. It gives her family a great deal of comfort to know Isabelle is in such good hands. So, on her 100th birthday, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother, niece and all of their spouses would like to say thank you for all you have done to help make her past two years such good ones. The Family of Isabelle Press Annual Report 2009 | 1 100 Years Ago... CHARLES E. SMITH Charles E. Smith Life Communities takes its name from a visionary leader in the Washington Jewish community. Charles E. Smith (1901-1995) was a persuasive philanthropist who generously supported the most vulnerable in our society. As president of the Hebrew Home from 1959–1962, he laid the groundwork for the Home’s 1969 move to its current Rockville campus. Recognizing the need for continued philanthropic support and the emerging continuum of care on our campus, his son and son-in-law, Robert H. Smith and Robert P. Kogod, and their families made an extraordinary $12 million investment in our future. Our name, adopted in May 2006, unites our entities, sustains both the legacy and leadership of Charles E. Smith and honors the memory of a remarkable leader. OUR MISSION The mission of the Charles E. Smith Life Communities is to fulfill Jewish values by providing a continuum of quality services for elders and their families, and affirm our commitment to the dignity of each individual. OUR VISION The Charles E. Smith Life Communities will be viewed and supported by our community as the leader and provider of choice in delivering innovative and compassionate services for elders. Our services and programs are open to all in the community. 2 | The Charles E. Smith Life Communities It all started 100 years ago in 1910. With an increase of Jewish immigrants from the 1880s and 1890s, many elderly faced an uncertain future. This was during a time when Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security did not exist. Fortunately, a small group of concerned Jewish leaders took notice. Together, they worked to provide shelter for those senior citizens in need. And after four years, the founders of the Hebrew Home for the Aged acquired a brick row house on M Street in Northwest Washington to provide a home for 10 elderly residents. In this home, the new residents experienced an environment founded on the Jewish values of care, compassion, justice, and learning. And as the number of those who needed long-term care grew, so did the Hebrew Home. In our first 40 years, we grew from a row house for 10, to a new facility designed specifically for eldercare on Spring Road in NW Washington that housed 35, to an expansion that accommodated 165 men and women. And then we planned our really big move, to our campus in Rockville, Maryland. Of course, we couldn’t have done this alone. As in our humble beginnings, community members, volunteers and philanthropists have always played a huge role in our ability to expand and serve our constantly growing community. Individuals such as Charles E. Smith, our first president Bernard Danzansky, our dear Aunt Minnie Goldsmith, and countless others helped us transform into one of the area’s premier eldercare communities—serving 1,000 seniors daily on the Charles E. Smith Life Communities campus. the Hebrew Home opened its doors, its arms, and its heart Today, as we look at our next 100 years, we are focused on how we can grow and evolve to continually improve our care. We know the best way to prepare for that future is to build on our strengths. Our person-centered approach to care allows us to concentrate on enhancing each of our residents’ lives. And, as we begin to integrate technology into our delivery of care, we know that we are making an even greater impact. Electronic health records will make it easier for us to give timely health updates to our residents and their family members, and to coordinate care through the continuum of services. Currently, we stand on the brink of tremendous change: • The baby boomer generation will create the largest wave of retirees this country has witnessed, a “tsunami” of aging, and they bring new expectations and perspectives on care for the aging. • We are operating within a rapidly shifting healthcare climate, and we are trying to decipher how healthcare reform and new policies will impact our organization. As our residents’ interests, needs, and priorities have continued to change, so have ours. But, much like in the beginning, our future success will depend on our extended family. Our donors, board, volunteers and staff working together, and our determination to stay true to our values -- that’s what got us to this point in our history. And that is what will lead us as we move into our second century, as we work to meet the changing needs of our individual residents and of our community as a whole. After 100 years of service, the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington has much to celebrate. Our success is a testimony to our vibrant past, vital present and visionary future. Our goal is always about making life more caring, more vital for that one man, that one woman, that one family. That will never change. Throughout this centennial year, we celebrate with all who truly make us the Hebrew Home, and we invite you to join us. • Dwindling Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, rising costs, increasing need for charity care, and other financial challenges confront our ability to sustain our vision. No matter what changes and challenges face us, the Hebrew Home is committed to being at the forefront of this changing dynamic. David A. Samuels, Chair Warren R. Builders have taken the hard steps today to guarantee that their support of the Home will live beyond them. Their legacies will help us provide a continuum of care for frail elders and their families for generations to come. We are grateful to the following individuals who have informed us that the Hebrew Home will be receiving a gift in the future because of actions they have already taken. There are many others whose names we do not know or who request anonymity. Anonymous (2) Helen S. & Leonard Abel Rachel Abraham Pearl I. Zatman Marsha & Morris Zeserman New in 2009 Legacy Gifts – Permanent and Designated Funds The Hebrew Home enters its second century of service with a permanent endowment strengthened by gifts from generations of donors, including those who have established Permanent or Designated Funds. Named permanent funds are created for many reasons: in memory of someone dear, in honor of a person or an event, or for the comfort of providing Charles E. Smith Life Communities with needed financial support for those with nowhere else to turn. These funds directly benefit those we serve through a wide variety of programs or services that contribute to our “Margin of Excellence.” The term “Permanent Fund” indicates the original gift creates an endowment from which earnings will be distributed. A “Designated Fund” is totally expended for the specific purpose chosen by the donor. We owe all of the wonderful donors who have created or donated to these funds a great debt of gratitude for their generosity and compassion. Resident Care Cecile & Seymour Alpert MD Fund Irwin H. later years. The Hebrew Home has enabled that to happen in the right tradition, with the right values, in the most appropriate environment.” – Robert H. Smith We were deeply saddened at the passing of Robert H. Smith in December 2009. Mr. Smith, with his wife Clarice and his sister and brother-in-law Arlene and Robert P. Kogod, sustained his father Charles E. Smith’s passion for supporting the elderly and was a generous patron of the Hebrew Home. The Smith-Kogod Residence, which opened in 1981, doubled the Home’s size. In December 2005, Robert Smith, with his family, made a $12 million gift, unprecedented in the Home’s history, to bring together our eldercare services under the name Charles E. Smith Life Communities, capping a half century of support. Harold L. Hirsh, M.D., J.D. Dr. Harold L. Hirsh was a valued friend and supporter of the Hebrew Home for over three quarters of a century. He began visiting the Home at the age of 8 to read Tehillim to residents, leaving 25 cents in the tzedakah box. As a physician in the 1950s, Dr. Hirsh organized doctors from the Jewish community to attend to our residents’ medical needs. A volunteer medical panel with 36 practitioners was formed, and Dr. Hirsh chaired this panel until 1972. In 1991, the Hirsh Health Center was established with a generous donation from Harold and Jane Hirsh, who also passed away in 2009. A medical panel was also established, under the direction of Dr. Harold Hirsh. Over 1,000 guests, including rabbis, political dignitaries and the Pentagon’s Military Color Guard, attended the afternoon ceremony. Because of 90-degree heat, Maryland Governor Spiro T. Agnew, third from left, decided against delivering his lengthy keynote address (it was printed in The Jewish Week instead), recommending that it be read “in the cool of your homes.” Charles E. Smith (1901–1995) A leading philanthropist in the Washington Jewish community and president of the Hebrew Home from 1959 to 1962, Charles E. Smith boldly organized the important studies and massive fundraising campaign to relocate the Hebrew Home, along with the Jewish Social Service Agency and the Jewish Community Center, to a campus setting in Montgomery County, Maryland. At the time, the Advisory Board of the Home, of which Mr. Smith was a member, included: Leonard I. Abel, Lawrence Brandt, Samuel P. Cohen, Joseph B. Gildenhorn, Hymen Goldman, Myer C. Handleman, Dr. Harold L. Hirsh, Simon Hirshman, George Hurwitz, Herman Kozlow, Charles J. Pilzer, Arthur D. Schaffer, and Louis Zions. The new Hebrew Home of Greater Washington was spacious, modern (with air conditioning), and could now accommodate 266 residents. In 1981, the Smith-Kogod residence doubled the Home’s size. 1995 – Rehabilitation Center Opens Responding to the need for skilled rehabilitation services for those recovering from illness or accidents, the Rehabilitation Center opened at the Home in 1995. Today, the Muriel and Stanley Rakusin 1967 Rehabilitation Center treats over 1,000 short-stay patients of all ages annually. It recently won the Outstanding Program Performance Award from RehabCare Group, Inc. Plans are currently proceeding to expand the rehabilitation program from 70 to 103 beds. Minnie Goldsmith, affectionately known as “Aunt Minnie,” served as chairman of the Building Fund Committee in 1922, helping to engineer the Home’s move to Spring Road. “My favorite charity is, was, and always will be The Hebrew Home for the Aged,” she once informed a friend. Aunt Minnie used the celebration of her April birthday as an annual luncheon occasion to raise important funds for the Home. In 1941, the Women’s Auxiliary began hosting these luncheons; in 1955, the event drew 1,200 guests to the Willard Hotel, the largest luncheon crowd the hotel had ever served. A Washington institution, the “Aunt Minnie Luncheon” is still celebrated today. Non-Profit Org.
