DG ALAN BUSY WITH
OFFICIAL VISITS IN 18A
During his recent visit to the
Cartersville club, DG Alan
thanked them for hosting the Fall
Rally on November 5 at the
Clarence Brown Convention
Center. He also spoke to the club
about the visit of International
President Dr. Wing-Kun Tam in
Athens, GA for the chartering of
the new campus club at the
University of Georgia. Pictured
below (L-R) are: President Ed
Brumfield, DG Alan, and Zone
Chair Ron Lusk.
DG Alan went to see the
Canton Lions in November also.
This club will celebrate 80 years of
service in April 2012. DG Alan is
shown here with President Kim
Aguirre and Ken Day, Jr., who was
inducted during the Official Visit.
OTHER NEWS FROM
AROUND THE DISTRICT
As part of President Tam’s
initiative to plant 1 Million trees
throughout the world this year,
Council Chair Kenneth Moore is
doing his part by planting a pine
seedling near a lake in
Chatsworth. Clubs in 18A have
ordered 7240 trees for planting in
various community projects, and
those trees and starting to be
delivered in the district.
To date, the Lions around the
world have planted well over 6.6
million trees!
In December, DG Alan
traveled to Sandy Springs. He is
shown here with PDG Gil Carter
and President Judith Roe
celebrating the holidays.
DG Alan also visited the Ball
Ground club, and got to see the
new Edmondson Field sign, a
recent project of the Ball Ground
Lions. The project took 4
months, and the dedication was
featured in a previous issue of The
Roar. Pictured here (L-R) are:
President Gary Atkins, DG Alan,
Sue Densmore, 1st VDG Thurmon
Morris, and Secretary Beth
Ingram.
At a visit to the Lions in
Boynton, the DG presented a
check to the club for tornado
relief efforts in the Ringgold area.
Past President Randall Franks

the club.
DG Alan and his
granddaughter recently visited the

FRIGHT FEST IN 18A!
The first zone meeting for South
Region, Zone 4 was held on October 27
atSmith-Gilbert Gardens, co-hosted by
the Kennesaw-Acworth and East Cobb
Clubs. It was their 2nd Annual Halloween
Party, and the clubs in the zone were
represented by the following:
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
Dr. Jim, the Mad Surgeon and
Gwendolyn, the Pocket Puppet
Fire Marshall Bill
The Dead Principal from Beyond the
Grave School
The Dominion & her Love Slave
The Christmas Tree (complete with
gifts)
The Swine Flu
The Un-Natural (baseball player)
The overweight, druggie, out of
shape, spoiled, overpaid football player
Character from Kill Bill 2
Not-So-Famous Ray (Moore)
Kennesaw-Acworth also gained a new
member (pictured above). As you can see,
they’ll take anyone, although they might
send him to East Cobb! He’s a bit “edgy”
around Halloween, and one of the other
members seems to have “lost their head”
around him. They are waiting on Board
approval...
Donations were made to the Camp
for the Blind.

BALL GROUND LIONS PARTICIPATE IN “WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA”
On Saturday December 10th members of the Ball
Ground Lions, joined by 3 Jasper Lions, paid tribute
to our soldiers interred at Georgia National
Cemetery in Canton. Drawing from what
resembled a river of evergreen wreaths, volunteers
placed a live wreath at each headstone carved from
white Georgia Marble. Currently the Canton
cemetery is the final resting place to over 4,500
men and women who served our country. Each day
an average of 5 new burials are conducted. With
this continuous growth of gravesites, the need for
funds to purchase wreaths also continues to grow.
For the second year in a row, Ball Ground Lions are
very grateful to play a small role in honoring
American’s military heroes and plan to donate funds
for the 2012 “Wreaths Across America” program.

JASPER LIONS FILL-A-STOCKING PROGRAM 2011
The Jasper Lions Club’s Fill-aStocking program has become their
largest service project of the year. Needy
families in Pickens County apply for
assistance through, and the “elves” go to
work to help provide Christmas for each
of those families.
The Lions work together with several
entities and businesses in town to collect
toys and money. They hit the sales
wherever they can to get the best deals
possible to stretch each dollar they
collect, and then each application is filled
from “Santa’s Workshop” during the
weeks leading up to Christmas.
A new initiative added this year was
to ask for sponsors for families at Festival
of Trees at the local library. People could
select a name from the tree and provide
the items listed for that family.
This year, the program provided
assistance to 881 children from 398
families.
The kick-off for this year’s program
was the Pancake Breakfast back in
November. All the funds realized from
that event went to Fill-a-Stocking.

Toys are collected from the schools at
their White Christmas Programs, but
probably the biggest source of toys is the

hundreds of toys.

Board Meeting @ State Convention,
Savannah
The Joint Meeting with the
Lighthouse was held October 1.
That was a very busy but
rewarding day, and much was
accomplished. One of the items
on the agenda was the report from
Neil Sklarew, a consultant with the
Georgia Center for Non-profits
(GCN). Several recommendations
for organizational development
were presented. An ad hoc
committee has been put into place
to take these recommendations
and create action plans that will
help the Camp improve how the
Camp can continue serving the
visually impaired from around the
state for years to come. This
committee, known as the
Organizational Assessment Action
Committee (OAAC) met with Mr.
Sklarew on October 22 to
prioritize the findings and get
started on the improvement
process. This committee will
meet again at the Winter Meeting
and the recommendations for
improvement will be discussed
more at that time.

JANUARY IS GLAUCOMA
AWARENESS MONTH
Glaucoma is a specific pattern of optic
nerve damage and visual field loss
caused by a number of different eye
diseases. Most are characterized by
increased pressure in the eye that
destroys the optic nerve. Without the
optic nerve, tunnel vision and then
blindness occur. Glaucoma is one of
the most common causes of
preventable blindness.
Symptoms of glaucoma are usually not
noticed until optic nerve damage has
occurred.
Please check with you local healthcare
facilities to see if glaucoma screenings
are available in your area. If there is
one, why not see if they could use
additional volunteers to help with this
community outreach? If there is not a
screening available in your community,
maybe the local Lions Clubs can
organize one. Resources are available
to help you get started at http://

Don Smith Receives Melvin Jones Fellow
Award
On Tuesday, December 13th, what
started as a Christmas party for the La
Vista Lions Club became a celebration
of one member’s life and service.
Don Smith was, in his own words,
“flabbergasted” when he was pre-
sented the with Melvin Jones Fellow Award by his longtime
friend, District F Governor June Phillips. His family made a surprise appearance to celebrate Don’s achievement.
Don Smith has been a Lion since 1998. An energetic man, he’s shown no signs of slowing down since then: he’s been on a number of committees, and when he was the Associate Director for La Vista, he put 40 years of sales experience towards
White Cane planning. “When you get the right person in the right slot, it’s amazing what you can do.” On top of everything, Don finds the time to regularly volunteer
at the Lighthouse clinics, and is often stopping by the office to
gab with the staff and drop off treats for the VISTAs. We at the
Lighthouse want to congratulate Don on his accomplishment!

Dear Lions of 18A,
Our Fall Rally in Cartersville was a great
success. I believe we had a good day of fun,
fellowship, giving and learning. We had a
very good turnout on a football Saturday
with well over 100 Lions attending. We had
27 Clubs from our District represented at the
Rally. We had between 40-50 Lions in each
of the four training and service sessions. The
food drive was another success with about
800 containers of food being collected.
Thanks for “getting your cans” to
Cartersville. Equal portions of the collected
food was sent back to the SWEAC food
pantry in SW Atlanta, MUST Ministries in
Cobb County, The Battered Women’s
Shelter in Cartersville and Hollydale UMC
food bank in Marietta. Thanks to Randy
Wynn from the Cartersville Club for
providing the Clarence Brown Conference
Center for this meeting. The Cartersville
Lions did a great job hosting the meeting!
We are approaching the half way point in
our Lions year. Through November the
District is down 22 members. We have
gained 42 new members and have lost 64
members. Ten of the lost members resulted
from the new Club in Johns Creek shutting
down. To recruit new members, I would
encourage each member to invite a friend or
relative to join you in working at a Lions
community service project and show them
all the lives your Clubs are touching and
changing. We need to add new members to
enhance our ability to better serve our
communities with more caring hearts and
hands. A new Club is being planned for
Smyrna with the extension effort starting in
early February. We believe this area is a
prime location for starting a new Lions
Club. Our Zone chairs are visiting and
offering to assist Clubs that are struggling a
bit with membership and community service
projects. Our GMT group is ready to assist
Clubs that may be struggling or desire to
extend membership.
International President Tam’s Global Service
Action Campaign for December and January
is “Relieving the Hunger”. This is a perfect
time of the year to support the Service
Action Campaign. I know most of our
Clubs are extending their hands to those in
need over the Christmas holiday period so
collection of food items can be a part of
your outreach efforts. I really believe our
Clubs and members underestimate the
importance and impact of their outreach
programs in the communities they serve.
You provide great service to those in need
and you are changing lives one person at a
time. Thanks for all your great service.
The Peace Poster Contest in the District was
won by Abbey Hardman from the Pickens
County Middle School. Congratulations
Abbey! District 18E had the winning state
Peace Poster. Abbey placed third in the
state competition. We had 338 students from
eight schools in our District participating
this year. I believe this is a great program to
involve our youth.
We will have standings in the District
Governor contest next month. Thanks to all
the Clubs that are participating. Please
continue to send your monthly summaries to
Teri Chambers-Rice.
I hope you begin to plan to attend the
District Convention in Roswell on March 9
& 10, 2011. Registration is being held at
$50. The Holiday Inn in Roswell is the
convention site. There is a sister hotel
adjacent to the HI, Best Western Plus, where
we will hold some activities. The rates are
$55/night plus taxes at both hotels.
Breakfast is included in the rate at the Best
Western Plus. International Director Gary
Anderson and his wife Cheryl will be our
LCI guests for the week-end. On Friday
night, the District Hall of Fame Dinner &
Induction will be held. Former NFL player
and Coach Dan Reeves will speak at our
Hall of Fame dinner. We are offering a
“Ghost Walk” later in the evening for the
brave souls attending. On Saturday, in
addition to the District Convention meeting
& elections and the Governor’s banquet, we
will be offering a Zumba class, a tour of
Roswell Historic sites, and a shopping trip to
Old Roswell and lunch in Old Roswell. You
will see registration forms and more
convention information in this newsletter.
This may be the last District 18A convention
since next year’s convention will probably
be the first District 18L convention. Plan to
join us in Roswell on March 9 & 10 for a
very special time.
Carole and I wish each of you a great
Holiday season and a Happy New Year as
you celebrate this special time of year.
