Come Home to Virginia, Come Home to Patrick County.
The American Civil
War was both a
defining moment and
the most tragic period
in the history of the
United States. One of
the most fascinating
characters who took
part in the conflict
was none other than
Patrick County’s
native son, James
Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart. Born in 1833
near Ararat in the southwestern section of
the county, Stuart attended West Point and
became Major General after less than
three years of service. He was “the eyes
and ears” of General Robert E. Lee’s
Army of Northern Virginia and was called
“the greatest cavalry leader ever foaled”
by a Union general - having on two
occasions taken his troops completely
around the entire union army in eastern
Virginia. The name of the county seat was
changed from Taylorsville to Stuart in his
honor in 1884. Today, the site of his
birthplace is commemorated and preserved
at Laurel Hill. The J.E.B. Stuart
Preservation Trust maintains the grounds
and historic displays that are available as
self-guided tours. The first weekend in
October brings thousands of visitors as
well as dozens of re-enactors and vendors
or “sutlers” for Civil War living history
displays and battle reenactments.
When the first
colonists came to
Jamestown in 1607,
they were looking for
a precious commodity
- gold. Although these
hard adventurers
found no gold, they
soon discovered a
plant that would make
their great journey
and the difficulties they encountered an
economic success - tobacco. One of the great
tobacco magnates of the late 19th century and
early 20th century, Patrick County native
Richard Joshua Reynolds, was merely
carrying on a tradition that had begun some
300 years earlier. Yet R.J. Reynolds took the
manufacturing and marketing of tobacco to a
higher level than almost anyone before or
since. At the same time, the tobacco industry
provided income and jobs for thousands in
the rural South and built cities like
Lynchburg, Danville, and Winston-Salem.
Born in 1850 on Rock Spring Plantation near
the present-day village of Critz, R.J. learned
the business of manufacturing tobacco on a
farm that included a tobacco factory run by
his father Hardin Reynolds. A part of the
history of the Reynolds Family and the
tobacco heritage of the antebellum South is
preserved and available for touring at the
Reynolds Homestead, a state and national
historic landmark located off Abram Penn
Highway a short distance from Critz in
Patrick County.
"The Crooked
Road" is Virginia's
Heritage
Music Trail, a 253
mile driving route
connecting the
Piedmont plateau
and eastern slopes
of the Blue Ridge
Mountains to the
coal fields of the
Cumberland Mountains. The Crooked Road
celebrates and preserves music as authentic
as the people who make it. All along the
Crooked Road, you can hear musical
traditions passed down through generations
in venues large and small from the mountain
gateway in Patrick County to Dickenson
County in the west.
Throughout Patrick County, you
can find venues along the Crooked Road
where our extraordinary musical heritage is
on display. Each week, Patrick County boasts
music every night Thursday through Sunday.
Our community has been honored with the
designation of three Crooked Road affiliate
partner jam sessions at State Line Grocery,
Patrick County Music Association and Willis
Gap Community Center. In addition to these
venues, weekly concerts are also held at
Christopher's Pizza and American Legion
Post #105. During your visit, be sure to
attend one of these exciting shows and see
where America invented its music. For a full
listing of show times, dates and information
about our local musicians, be sure to visit

If you have heard about the musical
heritage of Southwest Virginia, you only
know half the story. 'Round the Mountain:
Southwest Virginia's Artisan Network is a
new sister organization to the Crooked
Road that is establishing a craft trail
network protecting the tradition of days
gone by. The artisans, which include
crafters and farmers of Patrick County, are
preserving a way of life held sacred in our
mountains for generations. Patrick County
has a number of retail outlets showcasing
multiple local artisans and their wares such
as Bull Mountain Arts and Just Plain
Country Antique Mall both located in
downtown Stuart. Many local artisans can
be seen at various festivals throughout the
community demonstrating and selling their
handmade crafts and homemade preserves,
jams, jellies and heritage baked goods.
Patrick County is also rich in agricultural
opportunities from road side produce
stands to many pick-your-own orchards
and corn mazes. For more information
regarding our crafters, farmers and
heritage food producers, be sure to visit

From the Atlantic Ocean on Virginia's
eastern border, to the towering Mt. Rogers at its
southwest corner, the Commonwealth includes
every bird and animal habitat that occurs
naturally between Maine and Florida. The state
also offers a long history, rich culture, and
tradition of warm hospitality to welcome visitors.
Patrick County with its rich geographical
location, from the rolling foothills of the
Piedmont to the beautiful mountains of the Blue
Ridge, abounds with bird watching opportunities
on our two state birding trails. The Fairystone
Loop trail begins at Philpott Lake where just
back from their shores among the mighty white
pines and massive yellow poplars a small
pinkish-brown cross originates. In addition to
the unique geology, the Fairy Stone area
combines a mix of wildlife known from the
western mountains and the central Piedmont.
Whether searching for brown-headed
nuthatches and yellow-throated warblers in the
area's pine trees or scanning the reservoir from
every available vantage for unusual waterfowl,
wildlife watching opportunities thrive
throughout this loop. The Sweet Mountain
Laurel Loop begins near the southern portion of
the Blue Ridge Parkway. This loop provides a
nice amalgam of private and public lands,
outdoor recreation, wineries and bed and
breakfasts. The drive from site to site is almost as
amazing as the sites themselves. The Blue Ridge
Parkway offers spectacular vistas. Many of the
loop sites have rich historical backgrounds.
Colorful historical accounts of the area can be
found in Richard David's "The Man Who
Moved a Mountain". Be sure to stop and sample
the local flavor during your visit.

In Patrick County, you will find an unhurried way of life
rich in the tradition and the friendliness of mountain
communities. Nestled in the shadows of the Blue Ridge
Mountains, rural Patrick County is close to the south's
biggest markets but distant from their hectic lifestyles.
Patrick offers the charm of a traditional small town
America with friendly smiling faces. Here you are never a
visitor but a part of our family.
Guests to our county can stay at various bed and
breakfasts, cabins, campgrounds and luxurious resorts. We
also have two motels available. Historical attractions
include the Patrick County Historical Museum, our classic
antebellum courthouse which presides over the Town of
Stuart and is registered as a National Historic Landmark,
the Reynolds Homestead, Jacks Creek and Bob White
Covered Bridges, and many older farms and buildings
scattered throughout the county.

The couple began to meet secretly and their love
continued to grow. The young man and Indian maiden
were threatened and shunned. With the beautiful
mountains and flowers as their backdrop, they jumped
into the wild blue yonder ensuring they would be together
forever. As you gaze out at Lovers Leap, you can still see
the evidence of their love in the beautiful view and hear
them whisper in the cool evening breezes.
Lovers Leap is one of several spectacular views
along your journey through Patrick County. In the 1600's,
the Indians inhabited the Blue Ridge Mountains. White
settlers started arriving and began clearing land to farm.
Conflict arose between the Indians and the settlers.
Legend has it that the son of a settler saw the twinkle in
the eyes of the Chief's daughter, Morning Flower, and was
immediately love-struck.
Lovers Leap
The rare staurolite stones are found elsewhere but
nowhere in such abundance as at Fairy Stone State Park.
The County of Patrick was formed in 1791, and is
currently home to 19,517 citizens. One third of Patrick
County is in the rolling Piedmont plateau and the
remaining two-thirds in the picturesque Blue Ridge
Mountains where the Blue Ridge Parkway forms the
County's western border with Carroll and Floyd Counties
to the north.
Many hundreds of years before Chief Powhatan's
reign, fairies were dancing around a spring of water,
playing with naiads and wood nymphs, when an elfin
messenger arrived from a city far away. He brought news
of the death of Christ. When these creatures of the forest
heard the story of the crucifixion, they wept. As their
tears fell upon the earth, they crystallized to form
beautiful crosses.
The Town of Stuart is the county seat and was
named after Patrick County native General J.E.B. Stuart,
renowned Civil War cavalryman. His birthplace, Laurel Hill,
is located near Ararat in the western part of our county.
Visitors can choose from a number of outdoor
attractions including the Blue Ridge Parkway, Philpott
Lake, Kibler Valley, Fairy Stone State Park, Fairy Stone
Farms Wildlife Management Area and Fred Clifton Park /
Lovers Leap Overlook. Patrick is also home to two state
birding and wildlife trails: The Sweet Mountain Laurel and
Fairy Stone Loop.
For many years people held these little
crosses in superstitious awe, firm in the belief that they
protected the wearer against witchcraft, sickness,
accidents and disaster. Fairy stones are staurolite, a
combination of silica, iron and aluminum. Staurolite
crystalizes in twin form at 60 or 90 degrees, which
accounts for the stone's cross-like structure. Found only in
rocks having been subjected to great heat and pressure, the
mineral was formed long, long ago, during the rise of the
Appalachian Mountains. The stones are most commonly
shaped like St. Andrew's cross, an "X," but "T" shaped
Roman crosses and square Maltese crosses are the most
sought-after.
