Director, Musical Director & Choreographer Notes
This year’s production of ‘Grease’ has been a mountain to climb in
an unusually shorter space of time.
There have been new
challenges for many, including myself, with new staff and new roles.
I would like to thank all those who have committed their time to the
rehearsals; choreography; music; building and painting the set,
especially the American Diner and all the various administration roles
that have come together to help create a wonderful production. I have found myself
privileged to be working with talented staff and pupils who have made this a fantastic
experience. Thank you all so much, your support has been overwhelming!
There are so many people I would like to thank personally and there would, quite
simply, not be enough room! Therefore, each and every name of support is listed
later in the programme. I have been thoroughly supported by the Headteacher Mr
Hicks, The Leadership Team, The Site Team and the Administration Staff. Thank you
again, it is much appreciated.
Worthy of particular note are Mrs Candice Davies, Mrs Deborah Clear and finally,
Miss Kelley Phillipart.
Mrs Davies has been my publicist, marketing expert, PR expert, troubleshooter,
hotdog manager, box office and programme manager and so much more! Thank you
for bouncing ideas around and contributing above and beyond.
Mrs Clear has stepped into Hawthorn in her new role as Teacher in Charge of Music
and created a ‘Grease Band’ that has co-ordinated singers, arranged harmonies and
demonstrated a tireless work ethic that has supported us all in the production
process.
Finally, Miss Phillipart has not only co-directed and choreographed performances, but
has given up an exceptional amount of her time, day in day out. I could not have
done this without you. You have been fabulous, just fabulous, and always lifted my
spirits as my energy started to wane.
I always remember my first production at Hawthorn. It was 2004 and we were
preparing for our production of ‘Guys and Dolls’. I was completely blown away
by the talent that our students displayed and how they did it with ease, grace and
humility. It was at that moment I felt that I had entered into something exciting
and rewarding; a place where the arts are supported and encouraged with an
exceptional level of talented pupils.
Even today, this has not changed and as we began rehearsals for ‘Grease’ it was
evident from the very beginning that this cast was something special. The talent that students
displayed was so big that we had to dual cast. They have worked tirelessly to create the
performance you will see this evening and I have no doubt you will be as enthused and inspired by
their talents today as I was, ten years ago.
It has been an absolute pleasure working on this production this year. This is our first production in
our new department structure and as well as being great fun, it has also been a scary venture. It is
at this moment I must say how amazing it has been to work with Mrs O’Carroll as much as we have
this year. We have laughed (and quite often I have cried with laughter), we have danced (which
has been really interesting as I kept forgetting lyrics and the ability to count time) and we have
overcome broken set and soggy costumes. We work really well as a team and I can’t wait to see
what we will continue to achieve together. Thank you Clare, it’s been a blast!
This is my first production at Hawthorn High, having only been in position here
since September. My first few weeks of adjustment with unfamiliar layout, new
pupils and staff has been memorable and exciting by the huge talent shown at
auditions and the warm welcome from staff and pupils.
I am extremely proud to present to the audience this Rock and Roll musical. The
now classic ‘Grease’ conjures unforgettable songs and scenes that you can all
relate to; from the excitement of falling in love for the first time in ‘Summer Nights’
to the joy of being with the people you feel happy with in ‘We Go Together’.
I am sure that tonight’s performance will enhance the school’s long and rich tradition of staging
musicals of the highest quality. I have no doubt that tonight will showcase all that is excellent about
the school, its pupils and the local community and will further reinforce the sense of pride that
everyone associated with the school has.
I would like to express my thanks to everyone that I have worked with; the talented pupils, the
superb, organised and humorous Mrs O’Carroll (Director), the enthusiastic and dedicated Miss
Phillipart (Choreographer), the band and everyone involved in making this show possible. I hope
that you will be enthralled this evening and marvel at the exceptional talents of our young people.
The Plot Summary
ACT I - The kids think they rule in small town Rydell. They head back to school, their last year at Rydell
High. Danny is a member of the T-Birds, only interested in cars, chicks and hanging out with his mates;
Kenickie, Sonny, Roger and Doody. Sandy, the new girl in school, doesn’t fit in with the Pink Ladies; Rizzo,
Jan, Marty and Frenchy, although they are interested in her summer romance.
Sandy and Danny are unexpectedly reunited, whilst Sandy is thrilled to see Danny, Danny isn’t sure how
hanging out with a ‘good’ girl will affect his image.
The boys contemplate growing up and what lies ahead.
Marty and Frenchy include Sandy in their circle, inviting her around to a sleepover but she is dismissed by
Rizzo, she just doesn’t fit in with the gang.
The boys, meanwhile meet up at the garage to see Kenickie’s new car he’s been working all summer to buy.
The others think it is a heap of junk but Danny and Kenickie persuade them it will be a great way to attract
the girls.
After being rejected by the Pink Ladies, Sandy tries cheerleading but doesn’t seem to fit in there either. She
bumps into Danny again but things are awkward between them, nothing like the summer they spent
together.
All the kids meet up on the football field, Roger and Jan get talking and slowly discover they like each other
and have a lot in common (Mooning). The kids celebrate their friendships.
ACT II - It’s time for the school dance, everyone is paired off and wearing their finest. Vince Fontaine is
hosting the evening, much to Marty’s delight. Only Sandy is missing out on all the fun as she’s stuck at
home with a head cold. Things hot up at the dance where the dance contest is announced and Danny pairs
up with Cha-Cha, a top dancer. They go on to win the contest although Miss Lynch disapproves of some of
their dance moves. All alone Sandy faces up to the fact that she still loves Danny however futile it may be.
Things aren’t working out too well for Frenchy either. Having left high school to train as a beautician, she is
finding that she may not be cut out for the job, but can’t admit it to her friends.
Sandy and Danny finally get together, he borrows Kenickie’s car and takes her to the drive-in. Sandy is
there to watch the movie but Danny has other things on his mind. Sandy is upset when he takes things too
far and leaves him alone in the car, wondering if he’ll ever get it right.
The gang all hang out at the garage listening to music. Sandy joins them in the hope that Danny will appear.
Rizzo makes it clear that she still isn’t welcome amongst them. Kenickie discovers that Rizzo may be
pregnant and they have a row.
Sandy realises if she wants things to be different then she needs to make some changes about herself. All
the kids at the burger bar are in for a big surprise, especially Danny, when a transformed Sandy arrives,
looking hot and with an attitude to match. Once again the mood is up, Rizzo’s pregnancy was a false alarm
and all the kids celebrate being young and in love.

interested in performing arts, especially music. I’ve taken part in every Hawthorn

fun to work with all of my friends in something a little different to what we do in
lessons; it’s definitely a confidence boost. Grease is one of my all-time favourite
musicals and it’s great that I can be involved in it.

Sing-A-Long
I solve my problems and I see the light
We got a lovin’ thing, we gotta feed it right
There ain’t no danger we can go too far
We start believin’ now that we can be who we are - Grease is the word
They think our love is just a growin’ pain
Why don’t they understand, it’s just a cryin’ shame?
Their lips are lying, only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel - Grease is the word
Chorus:
(Grease is the word, is the word that you heard)
It’s got groove, it’s got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion.
Grease is the way we are feelin’
We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be who we are - Grease is the word
Chorus:
This is a life of illusion, wrapped up in troubles
Laced in confusion, what are we doing here?
They think our love is just a growin’ pain
Why don’t they understand, it’s just a cryin’ shame?
Their lips are lying, only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel - Grease is the word
Chorus: x 2
(Grease is the word, is the word, is the word….)
10 things you didn’t know about the film Grease
Most of us could bust out at least a couple of the popular tracks that made Grease so famous,
but here are 10 things you might not know about the film.
1) Before John Travolta landed the role of Danny Zuko, Henry Winkler was being considered
for the part. He turned it down to avoid being typecast after his huge success as Fonzie on
Happy Days.
2) Before she took the role of Sandy, Olivia Newton-John didn’t trust her abilities as an actor.
The four-time Grammy winner (who turned 29 during filming) requested a screen test with
Travolta to be certain they had on-screen chemistry. He was almost six years her junior.
3) Most of the cast were well beyond their high school years. John Travolta was 23, Jeff
Conaway (Kenickie) was 26, and Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was the oldest in the group at
33.
4) The youngest members of the cast were Eddie Deezen (Eugene) and Dinah Manoff
(Marty), who were both 19.
5) Grease was released under the name Vaselina in several Spanish-speaking countries.
6) The hickeys that are seen on Rizzo’s neck during a scene at the diner were real! According
to Channing they were planted on her off-camera by her love interest in the film, Jeff
Conaway.
7) Filming of the scene where the rivals assemble at the bridge for the car race made several
cast members and extras ill. The water on the ground was apparently stagnant and filled with
trash but no one knew this until it was too late.
8) The song Greased Lightning was supposed to have been sung by Conaway’s character,
Kenickie. Apparently Travolta kicked up a fuss because he wanted to sing the hit song and
Conaway eventually gave in.
9) The film had a product placement plan with Coca-Cola but it fell through at the last minute.
As a result, the Coke products in the shots were either digitally removed or blurred out.
10) Newton-John had to be sewn into those skin-tight pants for the carnival finale after her
zipper broke. The iconic trousers were actually hers and were 25 years old when she wore
them!
