A KOOKABURRA came
to a sad end in Bateman
Wednesday, electrocuting
itself on powerlines and
sparking a five-hour blackout
to 1800 homes.
THE beach front at the old
South Fremantle power
station site should be fenced
off to the public because
it is contaminated with

Taxpayers’ $17m
bill for ISAF
by CARMELO AMALFI
SOME $17 million of taxpayers’
money has been handed to
the company behind the ISAF
World Sailing Championships
despite its failure to meet key
performance benchmarks.

According to a contract
between the company and the
federal government, ISAF had to
show there were 175,000 visits to
its World Village at the Esplanade
Reserve in order for funds to be
progressively released.
“That is a benchmark we are
yet to meet, we have to report
back on that but we’ll hit that
easily,” ISAF chief John Longley
told the Herald this week, insisting
the two-week regatta had been a
sensational success.
His confidence flies in the
face of reports to the Herald from
traders, who’d reported dismal
sales and few visits: Some had
simply walked away from their
marquees in the middle of the
two-week event because sales
were so poor.
Achieving the 175,000 visits
target would mean an average of
11,000 visits to the Esplanade for
each day of the 16-day regatta.
Mr Longley says he’s still
getting feedback from people who
ran the village but acknowledges
providing a firm figure to the
government will be difficult
as—despite visits being a key
benchmark—no-one recorded
how many people actually went
through the site.
“I can’t prove it and I’ll never
be able to prove it,” he conceded.
Another benchmark was to
achieve 250,000 “unique visits”
to the ISAF website. Mr Longley
says the number is already close to
300,000.
Western Australia 2011 Pty
Ltd, the $2 company that ran ISAF
has now received $8.5m of the
Shop M70
E Shed Markets
$8.6m promised by the Gillard
government—including $2m that
was originally earmarked for later
this year—and every cent of $9m
from the Barnett government.
Another $3m was raised from
private sponsorship.
Mr Longley concedes the
federal government “may be
upset” if the 175,000 visitor
benchmark falls short but notes it
will have little chance of recouping
funds as most have been spent.
Any remaining will go towards
future sailing events. He believes
the championships may “break
even” but is waiting to find out
how much TV coverage there was.
“In the end, the most
important thing is how WA and
Australia performed on a world
stage running a very significant
international event,” he says.
“The only people who
complained were those who tried
to make money out of the event.
“I had 1100 volunteers, every
one of them had a great time
except one—and he was the
person the Herald quoted.”
Mr Longley says he is required
to submit to the WA government
an interim report on the event
by January 31 and a full progress
report by April 30.
As to criticism that the village
was not well attended, he claimed
it would have been packed had
Fremantle council allowed ISAF to
serve alcohol.
“The reality is people won’t sit
around listening to music unless
they can drink,” he said.
“If there had been alcohol, the
village would have been full of
people. But then Little Creatures
and other pubs would have
complained.”

Western Power workers would
normally just switch the power
back on but because there’s a total
fire ban on they had to visually
inspect the line, which took about
an hour.
Complicating matters was a
passer-by speaking little english
who saw the bird get fried and
who repeatedly yelled “shock!
shock!” at a well-meaning local.
The samaritan, assuming the
woman had been shocked, called
an ambulance which scooted
the bewildered woman and her
rescuer off to emergency.
When Western Power heard its
infrastructure had caused a nearfatal electric shock, it triggered a
procedure that kept the line shut
down another four hours.
The Herald hears it’s the
second time a bird has caused
havoc at the line, near Adam and
Dean Roads. The last victim was
a magpie.

MORE taxis, not ritzy ranks,
are needed in Fremantle says
council corporate services
chief Glen Dougall.
His comments are a slapback at WA transport minister
Troy Buswell who recently told
reporters his “advances” to
the council about providing a
CCTV-monitored rank had been
“ignored”.
Mr Dougall and mayor Brad
Pettitt told the Herald while
they’d welcome government
dollars but don’t want the $2
million glass-box rank just
opened in Northbridge ($500,000
was provided by the Perth city
council).
“What I have written to the
minister is we don’t need…a
taxi rank in that form,” Dr Pettitt
says.
Unlike Northbridge the
South Terrace rank outside
the Fremantle Markets)is not
a dedicated taxi rank, Mr
Dougall says. “It is adjacent to
a significant heritage building
and during the day it has a large
amount of pedestrian traffic.
[We] need to be mindful of
keeping any proposal in context
with the general streetscape and
not just cater for a handful of
hours on Friday and Saturday
nights.”
The council has already
installed CCTV along the strip
and would like that portion
of the funding spent on better
lights. Metropolis Nightclub
director David Heaton, who has
been working with council on
increasing taxi numbers in the
port city, is disappointed the
minister’s offer wasn’t raised at
any of the meetings he’s had in
recent months. He says the lack
of late-night taxis is a “core”
issue.

COCKBURN city council’s
audacious suggestion to
collapse six local councils
into three mega-councils
has angered Kwinana,
which would cease to exist.
In its submission to the
metropolitan local government
review panel, Cockburn wants:
• A City of Greater
Cockburn—incorporating
Cockburn and everything in
Kwinana north of Thomas
Road
• A City of Greater
Fremantle—incorporating
Fremantle, Melville and East
Fremantle
• A City of Greater
Rockingham—incorporating
Rockingham and the southern
half of Kwinana
If the suggestion was adopted
it would prove to be a financial
bonanza for Cockburn, delivering
it the rates base of Australia’s
biggest industrial area—Latitude
32 in former Hope Valley/
Wattleup—and an extra 60,000
ratepayers by 2027.
Kwinana mayor Carol Adams
says her town isn’t interested.
“I don’t think it’s in our interest
or the community’s,” she told the
Herald.
“I think Cockburn has had
a look at the map and thought
about what is in the best interest
of Cockburn.
“Our community made it clear
in 2009 that is was not interested
in amalgamating with either
Cockburn or Rockingham.”
Cockburn mayor Logan
Howlett denies his council’s
submission is inconsistent with
the results of a 2009 referendum
where amalgamation was
overwhelmingly rejected.
“It is apparent the reform
process is seeking to identify
options and not simply defend
the status quo,” he said.
“Having said that, the City of
Cockburn respects the right of
individual local governments
to submit their own reasons for
retaining their identity.”
WA premier Colin Barnett
is demanding fewer councils
and says if they don’t do it
voluntarily, he’ll force them
into it.

Boys beaten in
new year’s attack
by BEN McKAY
AT least three high school
students suffered horrific
injuries including a ruptured
spleen, broken jaw and
fractured eye socket at an end
of year party in Palmyra.
One young man had three
teeth smashed and underwent
emergency dental work.
Another had surgery to insert
metal plates in his face.
The injuries occurred late
on new year’s eve when a
gatecrasher was ordered to leave
a private party in Hammad
Street of John Curtin College of
the Arts students.
The young man reportedly
smashed a glass against a wall
and was thumped by a partygoer before leaving.
He is said to have quickly
whipped together a gang of
mates via SMS. Up to 20 turned
up and in a lightning-fast
but intensely savage attack
descended on party-goers.
Young women were also said
to have been bashed.
The Herald understands
parents have complained to
police, who are investigating
whether charges can be laid.
No parents or party-goers
were willing to speak on the
record, fearful of retribution.
Alcohol was at the party—
despite most participants
being underage—but adults
supervised the event.
John Curtin principal Mitchell
Mackay declined to comment.

‘It had a major negative impact…I would have lost hundreds,

Freo traders
batter ISAF
by JENNY D’ANGER
FISH and chip supremo
George Kailis says traders
at Fishing Boat Harbour
will fight tooth and nail to
prevent ISAF ever again
happening in the port city.
“We will 100 per cent engage
our legal team!” he angrily
declared.
Traders are furious with
organisers’ claims the event was
a huge success for Fremantle,
saying it cost them thousands of
dollars in lost business, let alone
the lack of any extra promised
trade.
ISAF head John Longley
has been on radio saying it was
such a success it will spark more
events, Mr Kailis says. “[But] for
95 per cent of Fremantle it was
bad,” he said.
“The salt in the wound is
[his] saying it was successful and
there will be more and more.”
Lawyers were dragged in
before the December event
finished when ISAF tried to
close Mews Road to all but VIP
cars and sailors taking craft to
the commandeered car park by
the Endeavour building. The
mooted closure was despite
the WA government spending
$500,000 on a new traffic link
from Cliff Street to Mews Road.
The traders had a win but
were furious a second large
parking area at Challenger
Harbour (behind Kailis) was
taken over for a giant VIP
marquee, leaving customers
with nowhere close to park.
Disorganisation and a lack
of communication before and
during the event added to the
anger and frustration, Mr Kailis
said.
FBH traders spokesman
Eddy Watling says the group
is reviewing what went wrong
and will demand answers from
organisers.
“Traders have not had a very
good experience with ISAF…
they lost quite a bit of money,”
he said.
Sterile
Commandeering the
Esplanade Reserve for the sterile
world village was a bone of
contention, with a dramatic drop
in foot traffic from the CBD to
the harbour.
Dazzled by the promise of
500,000 extra visitors, harbour
restaurants stocked up and
staffed up, ready to stay open
late to suit European dining
habits but after two nights and
no customers, went back to Freo
time.
“They had to put staff off,”
Mr Watling says.
Mr Kailis said he’d initially
rostered half his 120 workforce
to deal with the expected
volume, paying out thousands of
dollars in wages.
On a regular weekend
customers queue up but the
venue was only half-full during
ISAF, he says.
Fremantle Trams operator
Jon Tomkins’ custom was down
59 per cent on his December
average.
“It had a major negative
impact…I would have lost
hundreds of thousands of
dollars,” he said.
The day after ISAF finished
customers were queuing again.
“[It] went straight back to
normal.”
Cappuccino strip restaurant
manager Ivan Dzeba says
Benny’s was one of a handful to
do well out of the event, adding
there was a bit more “vibrancy”
on the strip through the event.
“Though the numbers
weren’t there…we had quite a
few teams come in.”
As spokesperson for the
strip traders’ association he
acknowledges the feedback has
been patchy.
“Some are not happy…and
had a bad month because locals
stayed away.”
Purely Australian manager
Tanja Simicevic says she did
marginally better than average,
but hadn’t had an expected flood
of customers: “A lot of shops
over-stocked for the occasion,
which didn’t eventuate.”

The Paper That Lives Here
est. 1989
I FELT so distressed when
reading about the bobtail lizard
that was run over (Herald
letters, December 17, 2011). This
letter, like Khalya’s, is a plea
for respect, kindness and
compassion to all living things.
In the words of Einstein: “Our
task must be to free ourselves...by
widening our circle of compassion
to embrace all living creatures
and the whole of nature and it’s
beauty.” We would be the better
for it.

Miracle or
mirage?
WE now know that half-amillion visitors have sunk
without trace at the recent
yachting event. Or maybe
they’re in Perth wondering
what happened to the event
that was happening there!
Now is the time for reflection.
There is no question that John
Longley was heavy on rhetoric
and light on fact in many of his
evangelical speeches. Pragmatism
is not his forte, oxley is (it is an
old English word—it means cow
dung.).
The only voice in the wilderness
came from a real expert in event
management who questioned the
figures. He commented that the
most we could expect would be a
total of about 20,000 competitors
and support crew and possibly up
to 5000 additional visitors. He was
right. His report, published in The
West Australian, was studiously
ignored by the very people who
should have listened—those
members of the public service
who, instead of questioning what
was little more than snake oil
salesmanship poured close to
$20 million of public money
into what is essentially a rich
man’s sport. They included
management within quangos such
as Eventscorp, as well as federal
and local government officials.
In the meantime there will be
a massive cover-up. It has already
started with John the Evangelist
using weasel words to correct
his errors. He now employs the
term “visitations”, not “visitors”.
Convention holds that when you
say “visitors” it clearly means
individuals. Or did he really mean
one person visiting half-a-million
times? He would have been closer
to the truth if he did.
Did he really expect that the
population of Perth was going
to be increased by close to 50 per
cent overnight? Did the managers

who poured our money into the
event really believe that? Did any
one of them ask for clarification?
Or were they simply caught
in the headlights of bombastic
bullshit? Frankly they deserve to
be covered in it.
Was this a case of The Peter
Principle which states that people
will be promoted to their level of
incompetence? Looks like it.
In the meantime we can expect
a lot of unhappy food traders to
look for a miracle. Never fear.
Given the chance The Evangelist
will next demonstrate how to feed
half-a-million people with a few
loaves of bread and a handful of
fish. That will happen during his
next visitation.

An insult
YOUR caption to the picture

the site of the Rocky Bay cliff

was a combination of insult,
ignorance and insensitivity.
You insulted locals who have

You are ignorant of the facts
in the geotechnical report on the

This seems, on the face of

my experience in other parts of
the world, including capital cities,
most of whom encourage visitors

Could it be that Fremantle

What made the music even

Here was at least one school

Following a vocal
community meeting two weeks
ago, the south-west of WA and
in particular Busselton, has
become that fictional summer
resort town called Amity, which
had to deal with a giant maneating great white shark. Just
like the film, a string of brutal
shark attacks results in a hostile
local community demanding
both protection and redemption
from a shark considered to be
responsible.
Marine biologists are called
in, shark hunters hired and
a declaration of war is made
between man and shark.
The WA Fisheries
Department has for years
condoned the concept of
shark killing, particularly for
the internationally protected
great white which has been
listed as a vulnerable species
by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature. But
that is exactly what it ordered
following the recent attacks,
declaring the right to catch
and kill any shark identified
as posing a risk to the general
public. It also admitted that a
problem may now exist along
our coast and that a number
of management strategies will
need to be explored. Its concerns
relate to the anecdotal increase
in the shark population and the
chance a few sharks may now be
showing patterns of residence
within popular holiday towns in
our region.
Is this starting to sound a
bit like Amity all over again?
The only difference of course
would be the distance between
the attacks. Having them
spread from Rottnest Island
to Cottesloe and of course
Dunsborough leaves them with
a far greater area of concern and
suggest they too might need “a
bigger boat”!
Most of us know how the
story ends and even Stephen
Spielberg himself could never
have predicted its iconic status.
The film not only became the
highest grossing of all time
(until 1977), but also earned
three Academy Awards for
Best Film Editing, Best Original
Dramatic Score and Best
Sound. The true star of the
show of course was that slow,
penetrating two-note score
played on a tuba that may go
down as the most influential
soundtrack ever made.

fear and anxiety, your pulse
speeds up a little, and your
mind returns to the impending
doom soon to be faced should
the sound continue and
increase momentum. Most of us
probably hear it every time we
enter the ocean, some even in a
swimming pool! But those who
hear it loudest at the moment
are the hundreds of locals living
in Busselton and throughout
the south-west that demand a
repeat of the film, to declare war
on the shark and have as many
as possible destroyed.
Of course the entire scenario
is ridiculous. There are no
rogue sharks nor resident killers
stalking surfers and divers
along our coast. However, the
number of shark sightings
certainly has increased. This
poses the obvious suggestion
that the population of sharks
has also escalated in recent
years. Scientists however
overwhelmingly deny any
evidence exists supporting this
population increase, suggesting
the increased shark sightings
may be due to two factors.
First, there is the obvious
increase in the number of
people and the time we spend
in the ocean that will influence
the sighting and attack rates.
Secondly, the increase in shark
numbers closer to our coast
may in fact be a return of
the great shark migration in
response to the availability of
a highly valued food source.
An unprecedented number of
whale strandings and floating
carcasses along our coast over
the past two years may be the
first clue to the increase rate of
sightings.
Due to the population of
humpback whales reaching
their potential carrying capacity
for the first time since the early
1900s, more and more are dying
before they can return to their
summer feeding grounds.
This will definitely attract an
increase in large sharks to the
area. Staying with this point, the
majority of sightings and fatal
shark attacks not surprisingly
also fall within the spring and
early summer periods when
whales are migrating south,
close to our coastline. Throw
in the increasing population
of sea lions throughout the
region and there you have
the inevitable situation of a
potential attack due to hunger
and/or mistaken identity. Put
simply, it is a case of someone
being in a predictable place at a
predictable time, not the wrong
place at the wrong time as so
often described.
Let’s learn from this
knowledge and start making
better decisions on how to
manage the risk of shark attack,
based on science and what we
know, not on fear or anger. One
of the surfers in the audience
during the Busselton meeting
even accused the department
of breaching its “duty of care”
should it not reduce the number
of sharks posing threats to
swimmers and surfers.
Shouldn’t we at the very
least share the duty of care
and consider other methods of
management? A perfect start
would be to restrict activities
in likely areas of shark activity
during spring and summer.
Strategies to better detect or
deter sharks would also be
a good option, as would the
introduction of automated
warning systems, as proposed
by WA fisheries. To start
killing sharks simply to protect
ourselves from attack so that
we can enjoy a dive or surf
in their environment is truly
unacceptable and belongs on the
shelves of the video store, not
here in WA.

FREMANTLE city council is
treating “as an offence” the alleged
unauthorised removal of timber from
the heritage-listed Elders Woolstores
on Cantonment Street.
Council staff have reported they’d
discovered during a recent inspection
that timber had been “cut from inside the
building,” which is owned by hotelier
Marylyn New.
“The city’s solicitors are dealing
with the matter as an offence,” council
planning manager Natalie Martin Goode
said in an email obtained by the Herald.
According to a blog operated by
Solomon Street local Lloyd Hammond,
the removed timbers include a,
“considerable area of…floorboards and
numerous structural timbers”.
“It is difficult to confirm to what extent
this has happened without entering the
premises,” he blogged.
“If structural timbers have been
removed from the wool stores—and this
needs confirmation from the owners or
council engineers—then we need to be
careful that it does not inadvertently
effect (sic) the structural integrity of the
building.”
An inspection of the building last
year by Cr Andrew Sullivan—the chair
of the powerful planning committee—
had found extensive water damage. The
section photographed on Mr Hammond’s
blog had been exposed to the elements for
years, Cr Sullivan said.
“Even a timber as tough as wandoo
can’t withstand the constant drenching it
would have received and no doubt those
boards were quite rotten and practically
useless,” he mused.
Cr Sullivan, an architect, says the
priority should be on making the derelict
building safe and watertight while the
council and Ms New continue to armwrestle over the best way forward.
Despite Ms New’s desire to knock
the place over he believes a “mutually
beneficial” solution can be found.
Cr Jon Strachan—formerly the
president of the Fremantle Society—
wants heritage laws updated to, “include
harsh penalties when an owner engages
in demolition by neglect of valuable
buildings”.
Ms New declined to comment, telling
the Herald: “I’m not speaking to you,”
before hanging up.
veterinary lecturer Kris Warren (above).
He is teaming up with the WA
environment department, Perth Zoo and
Birds Australia to look at the health of
three breeds—the Carnaby’s, Baudin and
red-tailed cockatoos.
Dr Warren describes the
three-year project as crucial,
with all three breeds, found
mainly in WA’s south-west,
facing extinction.
“It is thought the average
age of flocks is increasing
and many birds may be past
breeding age,” he said.
“If this is true, then
there may be a catastrophic
population crash when the
older birds die.”
“The major threat to
black cockatoos include
habitat loss, competition
with other species for
nesting hollows and human
impacts such as vehicle
strikes, illegal shootings and
poaching,” he said.
“But we don’t know whether disease is
a major factor.”
The effects of climate change will also
be considered.

Stories by BRAD JEFFERIES
• Political newcomer Dean Nalder is
nominating for Liberal preselection for the
seat of Alfred Cove
FORMER Bulldog and banker Dean
Nalder will seek Liberal preselection
for the seat of Alfred Cove.
Mr Nalder played for South Fremantle
from 1986-1992, and his since worked for
18 years as a senior executive with ANZ in
Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.
His family has a long history in politics,
with his father an MLA for Narrogin for the
Nationals in the ‘80s and his grandfather,
Sir Crawford Nalder, a Country Party MLA
for Wagin for more than 25 years.
Mr Nalder says he’s shifting from his
family’s rural roots and joining the Libs
because, while born and raised on a Wagin
farm, he’s spent much of his life in the city.
“I’ve spent most of my time in the metro
area, and in the seat of Alfred Cove,” he
said.
FORMER WA Liberal leader Matt Birney is
refusing to rule out a tilt for preselection in
Alfred Cove at the 2013 state election.
When asked by the Herald whether he
would seek to be a candidate he replied he
was not willing to make a comment yet, but
pointedly did not rule the option out.
“At this stage, I don’t really have any
comments,” he said.
“I’m not trying to be evasive, I’ve just got
nothing to say at this point in time.”
Alfred Cove is held by independent
Janet Woollard, who wins elections thanks
to heavy preference flows from Labor and
Greens voters that squeak her over the line
against Liberal candidates who generally
win nearly half the primary vote.
A boundary redistribution last year
introduced solid Liberal-voting suburbs into
the electorate and carved off Labor voters,
making it more likely a Liberal candidate
might win without going to preferences.
Mr Birney—whose leadership star shone
bright but was snuffed out quickly—
announced in 2008 he was quitting his
Kalgoorlie seat to pursue a corporate career.
Dr Woollard expects the Liberals to run
a strong campaign in a bid to take back the
seat that she’d won off former high-flyer
Doug Shave. In two subsequent elections
she’s beaten off Graham Kierath and Chris
Back (now a Liberal senator).
“I’m running again; [the Libs] always
put up strong competition,” she said.
“I’m hoping the community is aware
of how I help individuals, as well as my
work on the education and liquor standing
commission.”
“I’m a conservative in the sense that
I believe in the need for sound financial
management, and the social aspects that
come with that: that’s the basis of why I
joined the party.”
“I will be seeking preselection for the
seat of Alfred Cove. Winning preselection is
my focus at this point in time, but that said,
building profile, visibility and accessibility
will be a priority.”
He was coy when asked about his
chances running against incumbent
independent Janet Woollard, but said he
was aware of a recent redistribution that
shifted some 2000 Liberal voters into the
seat.
“She obviously campaigns really well,
and if I’m successful I’ve got a real big
job ahead of me; you’ve got to work hard
against any incumbent.
“Look at my background: I’ve spent 18
years at the bank.
“I’d rather talk about my own
background, not against Janet—I want
people to vote for me, not against her.
“I believe that as a member of the Liberal
Party I could make more of a contribution
than a conservative on the outside.”
Mr Nalder is aware of rumours that
former state Liberal leader Matt Birney
is hoping to make a political comeback
via Alfred Cove, but says the pair has not
talked. He believes preselection will be
decided by late February or early March.

Toxic beach concern
by CARMELO AMALFI
• From the station looking
back: In the distance are
new homes being built at
Port Coogee.
THE beach front at the old South
Fremantle power station site should
be fenced off to the public because it
is contaminated with cancer-causing
chemicals, environmentalists warn.
The Alliance for a Clean Environment
says the former industrial site is one of the
most polluted sites in the state.
It is also earmarked as the centrepiece
of a marina and residential development
proposed by Cockburn city council.
The contaminated site is open to the
public, particularly a small beach wedged
between the northern groyne of Port
Coogee and the groyne at the disused
power station.
Families camped on the beach on Boxing
Day with puddles of toxic water just metres
away. When the Herald visited this week
beachgoers walked pets and fished off the
dilapidated jetty directly in front of the
station.
A man swam just off the jetty while
his two dogs explored the pile of rubble
discarded on the north side at CY O’Connor
Beach.
The only obvious barrier to the site is
a line of limestone boulders and dumped
mattresses positioned on the Port Coogee
side.
Alliance spokesman Lee Bell says PCBcontaminated power transformers dumped
on the waterfront will have leached into the
ocean: “If they were there to begin with,
they’ll still be there today,” he says. “They
might be buried or are in the ponds.
“PCBs are a proven carcinogen, it’s nasty
stuff. PCBs have probably spread into the
shorefront area and spread along the coast
in either direction. I can’t think of any place
in the developed world where you would
have a PCB-contaminated site without a
proper fence.”
Most fences have been erected around
the station itself, not the pools of water in

front of it.
A Verge Energy sign warns against
contact with the putrid pools of water that
have formed outside the entrance leading
to the cooling ponds in the station owned
by Western Power.
“This water may cause ill effects to
humans and animals,” warns the graffitied
sign, which includes images banning
drinking, swimming, sailing and water
and jet-skiing.
At one spot where a small creek links
two pools, footprints in the wet sand reveal
the presence of recent barefoot visitors.
The power station was opened in 1951,
then the second and biggest purpose-built
thermal power station in WA. It employed
more than 250 workers during the 1950s.
In 1985, it was closed and a clean up of
contaminated soil and structures occurred
after the then-State Energy Commission
detected traces of PCBs in sediments.
A c c o rd i n g t o We s t e r n P o w e r ’ s

health and environmental risks associated

with the use of transformer oil and, “the
previous use of polychlorinated biphenyl
in capacitors”.
Western Power said: “The assessment
included the review of site history,
the risks of using oil and detailed site
investigations on the migration of oil lost
from transformers.”
Cockburn planning and development
chief Daniel Arndt says the cooling ponds
are located within the foreshore reserve
owned by Verve Energy.
He says the council in February last year
conducted, “some sampling of the cooling
ponds in February 2010. Testing indicated
there was no imminent health issue at the
time”. Mr Arndt failed to specify what
chemicals were found and at what levels.
He says the council asked Verve to fence
off the cooling ponds and erect warning
signs: “City officers have visited the site and
observed that due to graffiti and vandalism
there are currently only three warning
signs remaining and no fencing around
the ponds.” The council will again write to
Verve and, “request that fencing and signs
be reinstated”.

I
N September 1887, 300
camels and 120 Afghan
drivers arrived at
Fremantle on the steamer
Abergeldie.
This was before the opening
of the inner harbour, so it must
have been difficult to unload
the camels at the long sea jetty
that then existed. This was a
speculative importation and the
camels did not sell well.
The Afghans, while waiting
for the sales to conclude,
camped at Mr Albert’s piggery
on Rockingham Road; hardly an
appropriate place for Muslims.
When Arthur Bayley
discovered gold at Coolgardie
in 1892, there was an immediate
demand for more camels. The
firm of Throssell & Son &
Steward began to trade between
Perth and Southern Cross using
camels. The beasts were also
agisted on part of the Manning
family’s large estate in what
is now Cockburn; Davilak,
part of this large holding
survives. Later, a quarantine
area for imported camels was
established on that estate.
During the late 1880s, Afghans
and their camels were involved
in transporting timber from
Armadale to Fremantle.
Many more camels and their
drivers landed at Fremantle in
the following quarter century.
They provided relatively cheap
and reliable transport of goods
to the gold mining and pastoral
areas. I have been researching
their presence in Fremantle, but
it appears that, once the demand
for their services was established,
most did not stay long in the city.
I have evidence that one Afghan at
least established a shop, and some
became hawkers.
Because boats arrived
frequently with more camels
and their drivers, Afghans were
present almost everyday in the
city throughout these years,
although most were transients,
going inland with the camels. For
a while camel teams, in charge
of Afghans, carted timber from
Armadale to Fremantle.
Although most of the Afghans
were transient, at any time there
must have been enough of them
to gather for religious services.
They applied for land on which to
build a mosque: This was denied
them. In The West Australian on
April 19, 1895 there was a long
and forceful letter criticising the
government for not granting land
and adding that
“The whole principle of State
aid to churches is bad, but if
Government grants are to be given
at all, they should be distributed
impartially. Christianity has no
more right to official recognition than
Mahommedanism … Many of us
can remember how the Mussulmans
carried on their quiet unobtrusive
worship in Fremantle Park, and they
appealed to no one for monetary aid
to enable them to worship in their
own manner.”
I have suggested that, if the
heritage of Fremantle Park is
recognised, the Muslims should be
invited to erect a small memorial
to their use of it. The letter was

signed Allah Il Allah, but the
writer was clearly not a Muslim.
Because the Afghans
provided reliable, cheaper
transport, strong opposition
developed in the Goldfields,
particularly in Cue, where
aggressive newspaper
editor FCB Vosper, founded
the Anti-Asiatic League.
Vosper addressed meetings
in Fremantle to develop his
campaign, although some
Fremantle residents defended
the Afghans in letters to the
newspapers. Among them was
another long one signed by
Allah Il Allah.
I have only one clue to
the possible identity of this
correspondent: The Inquirer
newspaper reported on July
9. 1897 that “Mr J. A. Gordon,
oriental interpreter, writes from
Fremantle to say that he has
been desired by Mullah Mirza
Khan, priest to the Mahommedan
community in Western Australia,
to urge on the white population
a more kindly opinion for his
community”.
I have not been able, yet, to
trace Gordon in local archives.
I would be interested if anyone
has any information about him.
Although the anti-Asiatic
campaign contributed to the
development of the White
Australia Policy, not everyone
was hostile to the Afghans.
In 1911, a meeting at the
Perth Mosque discussed, “the
best way to show our appreciation
of the kind treatment awarded to
the Afghans, Mahommedans and
Indians at the Perth Hospital”.

Sacked council
worker wins payout
by JENNY D’ANGER
A FREMANTLE council
staffer sacked after CCTV
footage showed him sitting in
a pub at lunchtime has won
an undisclosed payout for
unfair dismissal.
Legal action by the Australian
Services Union saw the man
reinstated but he subsequently
left after receiving the payout.
The union says the man, who
wasn’t wearing his uniform at
the time, had been suffering
from an ongoing illness and
had clocked off for lunch to take
medication and to rest.
“It was Saturday and the
library was closed so he sat in
the air conditioning at Rosie
O’Grady’s,” ASU secretary
Wayne Wood told the Herald.

ROTTING seaweed is getting
up the noses of ratepayers and
joggers using the Swan River
foreshore around Majestic
Point.
Warm and wet conditions
over Christmas has brought out
the worst in the river, putting
off partying residents and pet
lovers from East Fremantle to
Applecross.
The Swan River Trust has
started removing seaweed from
heavily affected foreshore. It
removes up to 150 tonnes of
seaweed every year. The weed is
not toxic, but stinks when it rots.
The Trust removed about 20
tonnes from Point Dundas and
Waylen Bay in Applecross in early
December. It had built up to about
half-a-metre thick.
Other clean-up areas include
Matilda Bay, Freshwater Bay,
Mosman Bay, Point Walter, Como
and near the Nedlands jetty.Some
weed control work is expected
to be funded under a new WA
government plan to better manage
the Swan and Canning Rivers.
A draft protection strategy
for the Swan Canning Riverpark
is out for public comment until
March.
The WA Greens say funding
needs to be ongoing rather than
be allocated to short-term projects.
The WA conservation council says
the river is dying.
In May 2010 then-environment
minister Donna Faragher boasted
the government had committed
“another” $3.3 million on a series
of similar projects.
Most went to councils and
Still unwell, the man had
returned to work to sign off for
the day. “He didn’t have sick
leave and believed he wouldn’t
be paid for the rest of the day,”
Mr Wood said.
The man had been terminated
for “gross misconduct”.
Mr Wood hadn’t seen the
footage but says the council
never raised the issue of
drinking while on duty, a
disciplinary offence, at any of its
discussions. The ASU believes
the employer’s viewing of the
pub’s CCTV footage is a breach
of the Surveillance Devices Act
and is considering asking police
to take action.
Council CEO Graeme
Mackenzie says the council
had responded to a written
complaint from a member of
the public and as part of its

Ms Faragher ’s successor,
Bill Marmion, is also boasting
of government achievements,
announcing in December
“another” $14.1 million for the
Swan River Trust in 2011-2012.
The funding will allow the
Trust to protect wetland systems,
build a third oxygenation plant on
the Canning River (the same one
Mrs Faragher already promised)
and control erosion at 13 sites.
The list of funded projects include:
• foreshore revegetation at two
sites in Shelley
• weed and rabbit control in
North Fremantle
• foreshore stabilisation and
weed control at Milyu reserve in
South Perth
• removal of Arundo donax, or
giant cane, in Mosman Park

HE haunting strands
of Gerry Rafferty’s
Baker Street threaded
my thoughts as I sat on
the timber verandah of
this home in Baker Street,
Fremantle.
Running off South Street
it’s a quiet hotchpotch of new
and old buildings—some small
businesses fronting Hampton
Road.
This little gem is tucked up
one end, off the beaten track but
close to the action.
“[You’re] tryin’, you’re tryin’
now,” Rafferty sang in his search
for home and happiness.
This delightful threebedroom limestone cottage has
plenty to offer a wandering
heart.
Beautifully renovated it’s
true to its heritage with ceiling
roses, fire places and honeyed,
Oregon pine floorboards.
A rear extension offers plenty
of mod cons in a comfortable
open-plan kitchen/living area
opening onto sheltered patio
and a delightful garden.
The ultra-modern kitchen is
compact but there’s plenty of
bench and cupboard space—
and a huge five-burner stove.
The rough limestone walls
of the original dwelling add to
the charm of the living space,
enhanced by a large fireplace.
The third bedroom is
currently an office but could
easily become a dining room,
with double glass doors to the
outdoors for after-dinner drinks
on these warm nights.
The heritage-listed outdoor
loo has a ceiling rose, and
there’s a shower/bath next to it
where you can let silky-warm

How Walkable is

A
s an environmentally conscious
community and in recognizing
our over-reliance on the motor car
to get about we are cycling, bussing, training,
scooting and walking as an alternative.
When seeking out a property to buy or
rent, the many websites featuring properties
will provide a link that scores the property’s
“walkability”. Like many buzzwords that
invade our daily vernacular, the “walkableness”
of a particular property is already influencing
those buyers prioritizing less reliance on the
car. Indeed, before we used “walkable” people
chose to buy or rent as close to public transport
routes, as near the shops or as close to work as
their budget could allow.

A walkable suburb (as noted on www.
walkablesuburb.com) can be described as
providing a town centre of some kind, whether
it’s a main street, a shopping district or a
public space. There ought to be plenty of local
businesses and public transportation, office and
retail spaces need to mingle with residences
and they are places where density as opposed
to sprawl prevails. Walkable suburbs boast lots
of parks and public places, good foot and cycle
paths and streets are grid-patterned leading to
the town centre not a maddening series of culde-sacs.
When you search, the web site seems to
pick a random spot in the suburb and obviously,
where a property is located within the suburb
determines its walkableness; Arundel Street,
Fremantle scores a very walkable 95 whereas
Coode Street scores a car-dependent 45 for
example.
At a time where there is necessary
encouragement for sustainable planning
decisions and a move towards higher density
urban village living, the walkableness of a
property will become a more determining
factor when making home choices.

Living large in the city
I
’VE long been envious of
a friend who lives just on
the Shenton Street park in
Northbridge.
If you are serious
about security
DON’T LEAVE HOME
WITHOUT IT!
The media beats it up as if
Northbridge is a war zone and
makes out that to step foot into
the place is like wandering into
a minefield in the DMZ. But
apart from a few high profile
incidents I can say with all the
confidence of a part-time bar fly
that it’s pretty rare to run into
trouble in the entertainment
district.
Worried about keeping
your home safe and
secure while you’re on holidays,
at work or even in the house?
The most important item in making your home safe
from intruders is often overlooked when security is
considered. Of course it’s your meterbox!
The meterbox is like the heart of your home without power you have no lights, no cordless
phone, no electricity and in some cases no
security system
Thieves can switch off your power at the
meterbox just to see if you have an active
alarm system. Don’t rely on back-up batteries - they frequently fail because the use by
date has been overlooked. Thieves would
much rather go elsewhere than rob your home
if the meterboxes are professionally locked up by
the Meterbox Man.
Locking your meterbox is recommended by the
Police, Western Power, Alinta Gas, RAC and all
insurance companies. So for peace of mind and
a safer home call the Meterbox Man.
Benefits
And the benefits of living
there—an easy wander home
from work in the city or from a
few pints at the pub—means it
all stacks up pretty well.
If you are at all concerned
AT
HOME
DAVID BELL
about safety you’ll be glad
to know 2/45 Shenton Street
is very secure. Street-level
entrances are fenced off and
the security system (remotely
accessible from the main
bedroom) includes gates and a
full CCTV set-up which covers
doors and garage.
Inside it’s a modern, bright,
spacious three-bedroom, threebathroom apartment (perfect for
shared living arrangements).
The big drawcard for me is
the large living area that opens
onto the balcony that’d be
perfect for a barbecue. There’s
actually room to entertain here.

In an apartment. Incredible. The
dining room is separated from
this main lounge area by the
staircase, providing a little fancy
dining niche if you don’t want
kids watching Home and Away
during dinner.
Further back on this floor
is the main bedroom with its
big walk-in robe, ensuite and
a wee door out to the balcony.
At the moment there’s a grand
painting hanging over the
north-west facing window as
the owner’s a night owl and
sleeps during the day. He’s
happy to throw it in but you
could easily pull it down if you
wanted a bit of extra light.
The second bedroom also
opens onto the rear balcony. A
bit of work’s been done here,
extending the balcony out
another metre or so and putting
down some canvas to make it
a sealed cat run, but again you
could pull that down to suit
your needs very easily.
Downstairs is like a whole
other house. A big bedroom,
bathroom, and with a separate
entrance to the front yard, you
could also use this as a home
office. Or you could tape this off
as a designated guest area.
I like this place. The location,
the modern look of it, it’s all
pretty appealing, and I think
long-term once the Northbridge
line is sunk and this area
starts getting more popular an
apartment this big will start to
become a rare commodity.

EACONSFIELD’S Charlie (Carmelo) Retta has grown a 1kg monster tomato.
Its oxheart seed had come from a friend and in 30 years of gardening in his Mather Road garden he
grins he’s, “never grown one that big”.
The rest of the crop is shaping up as bruisers too, and fed on nothing but sheep and cow poo. “I never
spray them because the stuff gets into the tomatoes,” Mr Retta says.
The fruits of love are destined for the salad bowl, or as a main ingredient on wife Dorothy’s pizzas, along
with some of the healthy crop of basil growing nearby.
Mr Retta immigrated from Naples in 1956, and ran a fish and chip shop in the now empty Sealanes
cottage/shop on South Terrace (near the Douro Road roundabout) before working on cray boats in Dongara.
Following a serious car accident he worked at Cockburn Cement for 20 years until retiring.

Before I’d even finished
saying I was heading to the
X-Wray Cafe for lunch, four
delighted freeloaders were
following me down the stairs
like a giddy conga line.
X-Wray, across the road
from Luna SX cinema (head
down Essex Street and turn left
halfway down), is the kind of
eatery where you find musos,
poets and writers mingling with
old-school Freo hippies and their
pooches.
In many ways it’s a
microcosm of what people like
to think Fremantle is all about.
We plonked ourselves in the
laid-back, dishevelled alfresco
area that wouldn’t look out of
place in rural Ubud in Bali.
The capacious noshery
offers up a disarmingly simple
selection of breakfast options,
with an elegant touch, light
lunches and snacks. After dark
you can choose from a pleasant
tapas menu.
Both David and I told the
waiter we wanted the X-Wray
beef burger ($16). It comes with
a lean house-made patty with
lettuce, tomato, caramelised
onions, Swiss cheese and tomato
chutney.
“The burger was a few bucks
more than I’d like to pay but
had a couple of standouts,” the
fussy youngster later said. “All
the vegies were obviously fresh,
the patty actually had a fair bit
of meat in it (there’s an epidemic
of cardboard patties around
Freo lately), the homemade
mayonnaise was gently tangy
and the gherkin added an
interesting bite to the lot.”
While Belly proceeded to bore
everyone with his opinions on
beer I got to thinking about what
actually makes a good burger.
Is is the freshness of the bun
or the quality of the pattie? All
too often the beef is ground too
finely, seasoned too early, packed
too tightly or cooked too long.
Ultimately, it’s the ratio of
ingredients and the “juicy”
factor that makes a burger a
winner.
And while this mini-feast

amongst burgerphiles, it can
certainly compete with the
heavyweights of the local
gourmet burger world.
Matt liked the look of the BLT
with some wedges on the side.
For $16 you get two slices of
Abhi’s sourdough toast filled
with bacon, lettuce, tomato,
caramelised onions, Swiss cheese
and tomato chutney. So, pretty
much the burger when it comes
to condiments.
“I couldn’t imagine aioli
being difficult to put together
but whoever made this one
managed a perfect distribution
of garlic, lemon juice and
wholegrain mustard making it a
lip-smacking condiment for my
double-cooked, golden wedges,”
Matt reported.
“But it seemed during our
20-minute wait the cook had
only enough time to toast one
slice of bread leaving the bottom
layer of my BLT better suited to
a cup with a straw than a plate.”
Jessica went for the rolled
flatbread filled with Swiss
cheese, spinach and capsicum
and a trio of salads ($15).
“The salads were fresh and
interesting but the flatbread
lacked oomph and flavour,” she
said. “And the salads didn’t live
up to that old Latin phrase omne
trium perfectum (everything
that comes in threes is perfect).”
Matthew settled on fish cakes
with wedges on the side ($18).
“I wouldn’t have minded a
bit more fish in my fish cakes,
but they were one of the better
ones I’ve tasted around town,”
he said.
Old stagers will remember
with fondness the original Wray
Cafe, which got booted by its
landlord, requiring Greg and
Sue Leaver to find new premises:
They jagged this place, formerly
a backpackers and before that
a Croatian seafood restaurant.
I think that eviction was a
blessing in disguise because
X-Wray (ex-Wray, geddit) is
bigger and offers more than the
tiny Wray ever could.
I wouldn’t want to see those
prices going up much more for
what were fairly simple and
at times flawed dishes, but all
can be forgiven because there’s
something about X-Wray that
makes it much more than merely
the sum of its parts.

Cleaning, cooking and even
wiping snot off kids, this most
mundane of household objects
has had a role in the day-to-day
life of us all.
Now, in the hands of artist
Virginia Cunningham (aka Jean
Astbury, Naomie Hatherley and
Helen Seiver) the dish cloth is
reinvented.
Spin Cycle, which runs at the
Heathcote Gallery and Museum
in Applecross from January 21 to
February 26, incorporates more
than 300 tea towels that have
been artistically “reshaped”.
Cunningham says hundreds
of new, old and much-loved
tea towels were donated for the
project.
The threesome had altered,
reworked and sometimes
changed their original shape to
give new meaning to an object
that has been overlooked as
merely an icon of domesticity.
“There is a such a broad
spectrum to the tea towel—it
has made political, cultural and
social statements,” she told the
Herald.
“The magic of the tea towel
is that it’s used for so many
things other than drying
dishes—people collect them
as souvenirs and gifts so they
have many different meanings
and connections for people.
“On some you could even
smell the roast dinners that were
cooked with them.”
She said the show also gave
meaning to the cyclic nature
of daily rituals that often get
rendered as meaningless by

society.
“Spin Cycle examines the
production and use of the
tea towel as a reflection of
false values, like culture over
culture, stamped on a tea towel,
normalised and overlooked,”
she said.
“It is examined as a metaphor
and symbol of culture, society
and the individual.

“The origins of tea and ‘tea
time’ rituals indeed come into
question as loaded meanings
inherent in the tea towel
itself. The tea towel is a signifier
of our colonial past and an icon
of colonial conquest.
“The exhibition reminds us
to look closely at those things
we take for granted, such as the
endless groundhog day of daily
rituals that give meaning but in
themselves are meaningless.”
Melville city council
curator Soula Veyradier says the
show will surprise and amuse.
“Spin Cycle explores the
relationship people have with
the humble tea towel,” she says.
“This tongue-in-cheek
approach to a widespread
cultural artefact will amuse
visitors and cause them to reflect
on the nature of domestic work.”

while we were gone.
“He was gone about five
months. It got pretty skinny. We
ended up with just the sheeps’
heads, which mum refused to
cook, so when he got home he
found just the heads waiting in
the fridge looking out at him.”
It was one of those tales he’d
been remembering a certain way
all these years as. “the time dad
went away for ages”. When his
dad saw the work he filled in a
few details from his side of the
story: it was the trip where he
contracted hepatitis and almost
died, and had to
spend a month laid
up, recovering.
Other pieces
are more universal
experiences, like
the stegosaurus toy
Abdullah’s crafted
to be as big as a
dog. He’d wanted
the scale to be the
same as when he
held it as a kid to
try to recapture that
feeling of wonder
of a little bedroom
kingdom.
“When you’re
5, 6, 7 years
old, whatever’s
happening in those
four walls, that was
your entire world.
That was your
kingdom. You were
master of it,” he says.
“I’ve still got all my Star Wars
toys from when I was little—in
no way pristine—but when you
hold them in your hand you’ve
got this total love for them,
because they’re from a time
where they meant the world to
you.”
Inside the Little Kingdom is at
the Kurb Gallery in Northbridge
as part of the Fringe World
Festival 2012.

29 to February 3, 12–6pm daily.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
With a Malay mother and an
Aussie father who’d converted
to Islam, to young Abdullah his
home life as a Perth kid seemed
completely standard. But at the
heart of the sculptures in his
new exhibition Inside the Little
Kingdom are some
intriguing stories.
“The lamb I built as
a eulogy to a pet lamb
I had when I was five
or six,” he says of the
sacrificial sculpture.
But it wasn’t just
a pet. In those days
it was hard to get
halal meat in Perth,
so Abdullah’s dad
slaughtered the
family’s own.
“I remember mum
and dad bringing it
home as a baby lamb
and I loved it. And
when it was killed I ate
it and I loved it. Being
a kid I was totally in
love with that animal
that underwent that
progression to the
dinner plate... I love
food and I loved pets.”
That was a pretty typical
story for his family. Another of
the pieces, Waiting for Dad 1979,
depicts five sheeps’ heads in a
freezer, their eyes staring out
dumbly.
“I would have been about
two years’ old at the time. My
dad went to India for four
months on what’s called a
Jamaat, where [Muslims] travel
around the world meeting other
Muslims... before he left he
slaughtered five sheep and left
them in the freezer to supply us

Hey

T
HE Amazing
Drumming Monkeys
is an adorable variety
show aimed at 2–8 year olds,
(but is great entertainment
for all ages).
Monkey puppets Bongo &
Congo play African drums, lead
audiences in songs and dances,
and perform magic tricks and
(low-tech) special effects gags.
The show also features
beautiful positive messages,
such as caring for our
environment, and getting along
with each other.
The Monkeys appeal to a
great range of people, places,
and events. The show has cute
and funny monkeys for the kids,
great drumming for the adults,
variety segments for all ages,
and a message for the world.
The monkey show is the
brainchild of South Australianbased percussionists Xavier
Beaubois and Troy Moore. The
original idea for the monkeys
came when Xavier’s daughter,
Kira, laughed hysterically
when Xavier used her toy
monkey’s hands to play the
drum. Xavier and Troy quit the
bands they were in and set about
developing the concept for the
Amazing Drumming Monkeys
and, as they say, the rest is
history!
Together they hope that the
show will entertain and also
positively influence current
and future generations towards
sustainability and peaceful
coexistence.

Not all Electricians are the
same... most contractors don’t
turn up when they say, if at all
& when they do they are often
rude, unpleasant & leave you
with an unfair bill, a messy
house & feeling really annoyed.
Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”.
I know good, reliable tradies are
hard to find, that’s why I
guarantee you’ll have me arrive
on time. I’ll be courteous,
respectful & in uniform. I will
only do the best quality work - no
short cuts, then clean up after
the job & leave you with a smile.
If you’re not happy at the end
you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

• BEADY-EYED WITH AMBITION: Raewyn Fenwick, Ruby Talbot-Dunn and Leah Trigwell. Photos by Matthew Dwyer
W
HILE many of
their school friends
dreamed of a gap
year involving Europe,
Raewyn Fenwick and brother
Billy Menzies decided to
instead start their own
business.
The Bead Post opened next to
Fremantle’s heritage-listed post
office seven years ago.
“I was 17 at the time,” Ms
Fenwick says, (her brother was
24).
The shop is the result of a long
love affair with beads: “[I’ve]
always been interested... they have
a beautiful historic context.”
A dab hand at whipping up
funky necklaces, bracelets and
TTRADERS
JJENNY D’ANGER
ear-rings, Ms Fenwick honed her
skills as a teen making jewellery
for herself, family and friends.
“Lots of hours with my father’s
tool box finding out what doesn’t
work.”
The beads come from all over
the world, from Africa to South
America, a host of former soviet
states, even Afghanistan, both
during Taliban rule and the wartorn days since.
Afghani beads are Ms
Fenwick’s favourite and while
travelling to the highly dangerous
country is not on the agenda,
herald
The Bead Post has a “special
relationship” with its bead
trader, ensuring a steady supply
of antique and hand-crafted
reproduction beads.
A colourful hill tribe bridal
outfit on display in the shop
knocks for six the stereotype of
black-burqua covered women.
Travelling the world sourcing
beads is a romantic notion but
the reality is it’s expensive so
the shop relies on family and
friends travelling to keep their
eyes peeled, and on wholesale
connections.
Beads vary in price from $65 to
three for 5c and are as varied as
resin, shell, stone, wood and semiand precious stones, including
rubies, sapphires and tourmaline.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
In sorting out tensions between home
and career, it’s important to identify
where pleasure lies. You will be able to apply your
will infinitely more effectively if you are doing what
you love - and with those you care about. Freedom
IS responsibility. Explore it joyously.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
There’s a planetary tension between
Jupiter, who is all for expansion and
growth - and Saturn, who is all about contraction
and discipline. This is affecting you. One is the
accelerator. One is the brake. A car would be kaput
without both. And so you would be too.

history of disability”.
Stories of parents who’d
ignored professional advice in
the ‘50s and ‘60s to leave their
newborn children at the hospital
are heart-breaking, Mr Doyle
says.
“Mums now in their 70s talk
about deciding not to leave their
babies, and then the battle to
find places in society for their
child. Some chart the gamut of
emotions, some make you weep.”
There are 220,000 people with
a disability in WA, not taking
into account mental illness, Mr
Doyle says.
DADAA, (formerly Disability
in the Arts, Disadvantage in
the Arts) started 16 years ago
as a pilot organisation linked to

Artsource, using art to redefine
the way people regarded people
with disabilities and to allow
greater access to community.
“[People] are not comfortable
talking about people with an
intellectual disability,” Mr Doyle
says.
DADAA is now one of 11 key
organisations Australia-wide,
with an international reputation.
Its film projects, including
Charlie’s Community, are set to be
aired on SBS TV.
“[And] we’re working on
getting them housed in the

THE HERALD DOES NOT PUBLISH SEXUAL SERVICE ADVERTISEMENTS. PLEASE RESPECT OUR ADVERTISERS IN YOUR RESPONSES
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
The nearly full moon starts it’s
week in Gemini. The moon
charges us up with feelings. It also makes us prone
to emotionality. The key to all this, is having some
sense of what one’s needs are and how to take
care of them. Getting pernickety won’t help. Stay
expansive.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
There’s a natural tension between
individualism and relationship. Life
won’t let us separate one from the other. Even if you
were in a cave in the Himalayas, you’d be dreaming
about the ones you love. If you can’t get what you
want, accept an increase in understanding instead.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
If it’s all been getting a bit raggedy
around the edges, then it’s time to
put in a concerted effort to create some kind of
order. If there’s no pleasure when you start doing
what you do, it will turn up once you get going. Give
your endeavours a chance to shine. They will.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Drive with pleasure now. The seriously
hard yards have been done. If you
don’t play with delight, then the trickster gods will
tickle and tease you until you do. The peak of the
mountain is in sight. As excitement gathers, keep
one foot going ahead of the other. Enjoy!
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
You have your eye on finer deeper
things. It’s hard to apply your attention
to mundane matters. If you get split around these
two, then one or the other will spit you out. Thread
the mundane and the magical together in such a
way that you are whole and happy.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
Saturn isn’t too far away. He has
nearly done his time in Libra.
Scorpio is next on his list. He will be helping you to
sort out what’s essential in your life and what’s not.
Be one step ahead of him by beginning to ponder
it now. Wisdom is required. Faux wisdom won’t do.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Mercury is sparking you up with a
playful mix of ideas, restlessness and
communication. His job is to give you insight. His
method is sometimes to lead you up the garden
path, until you truly honour your own understanding.
In other words, borrowed knowledge won’t do.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
The sun is shining on your mountaintop. You are standing up there with
your nose into the breeze, looking down at the
valleys below. There’s no moment for a mountain
goat, like the moment of completion. Close a circle
of endeavour, to your deep satisfaction.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Deep feelings of longing and healing are
mixing in with your need for love, delight
and pleasure. Venus, Neptune and Chiron are
brewing up quite a cocktail. Dance in the lovely
lack of reason that existence is gifting you. Life is
encouraging your poetic spirit to lift off.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
When you feel supported, morally or
practically, there is no end to what
you can do. Saturn is providing you with all the
spine you need to bring your vision to fruition. There
is no sacrificing your love of beauty in the name of
pragmatism. Communication is the key.
