Surfers Paradise Catholic Parish ONE PARISH three churches Sacred Heart 50 Fairway Drive, Clear Island Waters St Vincent’s 40 Hamilton Avenue, Surfers Paradise Stella Maris 254 Hedges Avenue, Broadbeach PASTORAL Very Reverend Fr Tim Harris Parish Priest & Dean of South Coast Deanery Fr Nicholas Okafor Associate Pastor Fr Regimon Gervasis MCBS Associate Pastor Helen Goldsmith Pastoral Ministry Coordinator PARISH STAFF Sonya Slater Parish Manager Marylou Ayres Parish Secretary Pat Kelly Parish Assistant Angela Williams Atrium Coordinator FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C: 9th / 10th July 2016 SACRED HEART CHURCH – CELEBRATING 30 YEARS Last Sunday, 3rd July, over 600 people attended the 30 year anniversary celebration at Sacred Heart Church, Clear Island Waters. Archbishop Mark Coleridge began the celebration with a special Mass to dedicate the Church and new altar. After Communion, Archbishop Mark led a procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the new tabernacle, inaugurating the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. It was a real family occasion with special guest, Bishop-elect Anthony Randazzo, joining the celebration. Bishop-elect Anthony is a local Surfers Paradise Parish boy having lived and attended school in the Parish. Also concelebrating were former Dean and Associate pastor Fr Kevin Carey, Fr Tim and Fr Regimon. Deacon Gary Stone assisted the Archbishop and Fr Nicholas acted as the master of ceremonies. The sanctuary was refurbished to mark the occasion through the generous donations of parishioners. We gratefully acknowledge and thank all the contributions which have enhanced and created a place of beauty for the worship of God. Many of those who came to the 30 year anniversary attended the blessing and opening of the Sacred Heart Church by Most Reverend Francis R Rush DD Archbishop of Brisbane in 1986 and were delighted with the refurbishment. Fr Tim praised the upgrade saying “the previous altar, Ambo and tabernacle had stood the Church and community in very good stead for 30 years, but it was time for an upgrade that reflected the growth of both the parish and the community. The church has always been a place of prayer and worship for the community and continues to be worthy of the celebration of the mystery of Jesus.” Celebrations continued with Archbishop Mark joining the community at morning tea. We wish to gratefully thank our altar servers – Chelsea, Joseph, Max, Matt and Tom; Christeen and the choir; and the hospitality team which included the Youth, for their time and efforts assisting at this celebration. The Parish is gifted with generous, committed community members. This is definitely a special parish and we should all be very proud of what is achieved here, the wonderful Churches we have, the facilities and groups we offer and the love that binds us all. I feel very blessed to work here and be a member of this worshipping community. There are many ways you can contribute – Sacristan, Extraordinary Minister of Communion, Reader, Welcomer, Collector, Data Projector, Music Ministry, Altar Server, Hospitality, Children’s Liturgy. Full training will be 10: 38-42 provided. Please contact Helen Goldsmith by phoning the Parish Office: 5572 REFLECTION: The readings today encourage us to dig through the 5433, or email directly to: [email protected] 10-14; Col 1: 15-20; Lk 10: 25-37 FEASTS: Mon 11th St Benedict, abbot; Fri 15th St Bonaventure, NEXT WEEK: 16th Sunday Ord Time; Gen 18: 1-10; Col 1: 24-28; Lk letter of the Law to find its spirit. Some people tend to be very concerned about orthodoxy, about thinking and saying the right thing in conformity with the Church’s teaching, but there can be no orthodoxy without orthopraxis, or correct conduct. “Faith without good works is dead.” The first reading emphasises a deeply internalised embrace of God’s Law out of a sense of love, not mere compliance or duty, as the Law “is already in your mouths and in your hearts.” The Gospel links Jesus’ commandment to love God and neighbour to the text from Deuteronomy and takes to an entirely new level, just how inclusive our sense of who qualifies as a neighbour must be. “Who is my neighbour?” is a crucial question in carrying out the commandment. Another way to ask it is, “Who in my life am I willing/unwilling to help?” The Good Samaritan parable challenges us to forget about our status in society, what people might say about us, our personal fears and desires which turn us in on ourselves and forget about our religious “obligations”. In the story, the injured man – a complete stranger – has a higher priority than the needs of any of the three passers-by. The key word in the story is “compassion,” used twice. Compassion implies fellowfeeling, identifying with the pain and suffering of others. Compassion calls for an immediate response to immediate needs. Let us ask for the grace to respond with the healing touch of the Good Samaritan to our neighbours in need, such that our faith may be accompanied by good works. Ordination of Bishop-Elect Anthony Randazzo The Archdiocese of Sydney will be streaming the Ordination of Bishop-Elect Anthony Randazzo live from St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney on Wednesday 24th August from 7pm.
