ABV: 5% unfiltered lager Butcher block pale ale draft 43 One of the first craft beers on the scene in South Africa, the Brewers & Union Beast of the Deep Unfiltered Lager has a tropical fruit aroma and a creamy, smooth mouthfeel. A honey character with a chewy, biscuity malt holds the backbone, while a dry, smooth richness finishes this elegant beer.Tasting notes: Fruity, with honey, biscuity aromas and an elegant dry finish. 43 This unfiltered lager is about as crafty and flavourful as they come. Unfiltered, unpasteurised and bursting with flavour, it has a soft, round mouthfeel and a biscuity malt character. 38 Tasting Notes: Creamy mouthfeel with a dry finish and aromas of grass and sweet fruit. This American Style award winning Pale Ale, is light and smooth in body with a distinctive flavour profile, and a decidedly fresh taste. Refreshing characteristics where the rich malt complexity is balanced by a lingering bitterness. Food pairing: This beer is amazing with our traditional and tender Crumbed or Grilled Pork Chops. A traditional Bavarian wheat beer, this weiss has aromas of vanilla, all-spice and cloves. Taste Notes: Signature yeast creates aromas of vanilla and all-spice. Not long ago those were your choices when it came to ordering a beer in a restaurant. But with the craft beer revolution sweeping across South Africa choosing a brew to go with your burger has become a lot more exciting. Instead of an Amstel why not order Amber Ale? What about a light and fragrant Saison, or a hoppy India Pale Ale? Perhaps a Bitter would be better, or a Weiss might be nice? At Mike’s Kitchen we take those same principles into the kitchen, crafting each and every meal from fresh, wholesome ingredients. That succulent beef burger on the menu? It was made by hand right here in this restaurant. The perfect chips alongside? Cut from fresh potatoes; no frozen bags of fries for us. This is real food, hand-made with care. The explosion in craft beer may have started in the United States, but it has taken South Africa by storm. Cape Town is leading the charge with the likes of the Cape Brewing Company, Devil’s Peak Brewing Company and Jack Black’s Brewing Co, but there’s plenty of action upcountry too. Aces Brew Worx, Brewhogs and Drayman’s all turn out superb small-batch brews. Down in KZN, Shongweni Brewery is flying the craft beer flag too. Craft beer, like handcrafted food, takes a little more effort and a bit more time to make, but we reckon the proof is on the plate and in the glass, and since Mike’s has always been relevant and contemporary, this is the place to enjoy craft beer. The Krystal Weiss, a filtered wheat beer, is perhaps the best of the three launch brews, with a touch of sweetness on the palate and a dry, but not bitter, finish. This is a Weiss bier that’d make a German smile. The Red Ale is equally a fine example of this American-style beer, with a deep copper colour and a good roasted bitterness on the palate. While many of the recipes and beer styles are brought in from abroad, they’re often given a memorable South African twist. Think aromatic buchu infusions, a hit of local chilli and fynbos honey added into the brew. No surprise either that South African craft brewers are coming out tops in global beer competitions. In 2014 Stellenbosch brewery Stellenbrau beat out 38 top beers from around the world to bag the prize for best craft lager at the 2014 Global Craft Beer Award. The Cream Ale is a great option for those who find lager or pilsner simply too bitter. This one is sweet on the nose and the tongue, and a must for those looking for an easy-drinking and approachable beer. These skilled brewmasters wear their heart on their sleeve; pouring their passion, skill and Cheers! 27 Back in Greenside in 1972, Mike Illion (Oom Mike to the ‘laaitjies’) noticed that there were no quality restaurants to go dine at. Even Tannie se ‘kombuis’ wasn’t up to scratch any more. Once the apple eventually hit the ground and the paw-paw hit the fan, Mike’s plan was set into motion. A plan that would chnage Greenside and South-Africa forever... to build the country’s greatest family restaurant. He went around the whole town (as far as Poffadder and ‘duskant’ De Aar) to all the farmers, ensuring that his restaurant would have the freshest ingredients for all its meals. Even the aunties at the local ‘tuisnywerheid’ worked up a real sweat, (their cheeks wobbling and looking like rozy apples), tasting and sampling all of Mike’s recipes. Mike even had to persuade his old army pal Hennie, to give up his Oumas famous rib-basting recipe, which was to form the basis of all Mike’s famous ribs. (We all know of course, who copied Oom Mike’s basting... well they tried to). Mrs Viljoen and Oom Mike worked until very late at night testing the boerewors recipe (wink-wink). We’ve got the power! planning Oom Mike’s new venture had the whole town a buzz (A total ‘toestand’) As he chipped away at the centre piece, people asked, “What will he call it?” “What food will he serve?” For months, Mike had the town in awe, as they slowly saw his mastepiece unfolding. Chefs were brought in for training, ads were placed in the ‘koerant’ for waiters and staff. The whole idea was coming to life. a private or corporate function? After filtering through queues of waiter wann-be’s, Mike assembled his team, ensuring that nothing was left to chance. All staff had to attend intense training sessions, lots of dress fittings and rehearsels. They had all their aprons and ‘kop-doeke’ made ‘nommerpas’ while learning all about customer service, good values, product knowledge and how to pour a ‘lekker’ draught. Eventually it was time for the great reveal. On 27 September 1972, the whole of Greenside came to a halt. The aunties spent the whole day dolling themselves up for their night out. The kids ran around in excitement, because that night they were going to eat at Oom Mike’s Kitchen. (No more eating at the Royal Hotel). Don’t be left in the dark... People arrived anticipating a meal but received a total kitchen experience. The smell of delicious ribs and steak filled the restaurant. The sight of over-flowing, delicious salads captured the senses, making everyone’s mouth water for miles. For hours, food steamed to tables and empty plates returned to the kitchen. (Even old Hennie was caught, under the staircase, licking his plate). The opening of Mike’s Kitchen was a great success. Mike and his team to this very day, strive for excellence in food and hospitality.
