Introduction to the Internet of Things Days
Rotterdam 2013
Welcome
We welcome you to the Internet of Things Days Rotterdam 2013. During the
Rotterdam IoT-Days we’ll discuss altogether what IoT is, how it works and
above all why it has to be there. It is expected that IoT will have a major impact
on people’s lives and societal domains. When we want IoT to be of meaning for
us all, we should take control and create new ways of life and work.
The Internet
The Internet as we know it today only exists for some 25 years. After its first
developments it was Mark Weiser, together with John Seely Brown, who in
1996 wrote his famous text: ‘the Coming age of Calm Computing’. Here he
predicted the ubiquitous computing; i.e., computers would be embedded in our
environment and act without our interference. In 1999 Kevin Ashton coined the
term Internet of Things; the connection between objects and the internet. Now,
only 13 years later, the discussion around the IoT becomes widely spread. More
and more organisations try to focus on relevant issues, think-tanks try to focus
on its relevance, companies look for business opportunities, the scientific
search for answers on questions related to e.g. privacy and safety issues is
extending.
EU & Global
The European Union has considered IoT as an important topic in their policy,
expecting improvement of economic growth and social wellbeing. Several cities
around the world have explored the possibilities of pervasive technologies and
open data to improve city living empower their citizens . However, the basic
question whether IoT is a technology or an concept remains.
Questions
This is the point of departure for several days on which we intend to present a
variety of discussions, projects, presentations and lectures; all with the IoT as
leading concept, but with a positive, yet critical attitude towards its goals and
implementation. After all; to which question was/is the IoT an answer at first?
The most elementary description of the IoT is that it connects the physical world
to the virtual/digital world. More articulated descriptions exist, but they vary in
detail, not in their essence. Nevertheless: by connecting both worlds we have
facilitated a possible way of communication; next – or better first - we need to
determine why, when and for whom.
Development
The IoT is not only a business case and/or a technological development. This is
about a concept which involves us all; it will have a significant influence on our
daily life. It concerns us as humans in an increasingly hybrid world. It is up to us
how to deal with it.
Parallel to the IoT other developments are raised and belong to its periphery:
Open Data, Augmented Reality, 3-d printing etc. All of these can be seen as
threats or chances; it is up to us to determine how we take control and create
new ways of life and work, with additional values.
The Conference
After the first conference on IoT vs. Home-Sense on December 9th. 2011 in
Rotterdam, we now also expand our field of interest to other areas of
implementation. In joint effort with local government, companies, and research
and educational institutions we will present discussions and projects which have
their origin in two mutual convictions:
1. The internet of things is here; but we might need to understand better
what it is and how it works.
2. The internet of things is here for human need; to provide the
technology, framework and facilities to improve life and its meaningful
experience.

again turn our focus to the issues related to the internet of things with regard to
our build environment. Through a series of presentations and projects we will
pay attention and - most of all – discuss the relevant issues. This day will also
build on the Onlife Initiative as set up by the EC-Digital Agenda which serves as
an actual framework for either presentations and discussion.

Internet of Things is een ontwikkeling die het vakgebied van ontwerpers en
ontwikkelaars van interactieve media en technologie sterk verandert. Niet alleen
wordt daarbij een beroep gedaan op nieuwe vaardigheden op gebied van
techniek en interactieontwerp maar vooral ook vraagt het om een sterker
vermogen van ontwerpers en ontwikkelaars om te reflecteren op de impact van

There are many social issues in Rotterdam that need a solution. How can we
use the technology of the Internet of Things to make Rotterdam more smart and
social? When your toothbrush can communicate with your dentist, what smart
opportunities can we create for the inhabitants of Rotterdam? Rotterdam
Internet Valley and Enviu start a Challenge to find solutions for specific social
issues in Rotterdam.
How? The Challenge
The co-creation platform of the challenge goes online at the 10th of April. We
are going to crowdsource ideas that make Rotterdam smarter and more social
at the same time. Everyone can share their ideas and win 2500 euro and the
opportunity to put your idea into practice. Check

In this workshop we investigate if/how social cohesion in the urban environment
of Rotterdam can be improved by means of IoT (sensor technology, mobile
phones, wearables, etc). After a short introductory presentation you are invited
to actively participate, by defining an interaction you want to see improved in the
city and by ‘making’ a solution with help of your own artificial sensor kit. Think of
moodshirts, social chairs, dating balloons ;) be creative! At the end of the
morning the solutions will be presented in a couple of short pitches.

Due to the rise of social networks and the access to mobile technologies, we
are more connected than ever before. At the same time, individualization is a
fact and the lack of social cohesion in contemporary cities becomes clear.
Spheres of social interaction affecting identity and sense of belonging are not
disappearing, but require new ways of interaction. New social aggregations
come into being differentiating local, global, physical, digital, offline, and online
communities. IoT can offer unique opportunities to stimulate social cohesion in
the city by supporting participatory citizenship and by making urban spaces
more vibrant, sustainable and user-friendly.

Stadslab stands for technological and conceptual empowerment of everybody
(you can make almost anything). This is not inherent to the Internet of Things
(IoT), and often even contradictory:
With the knowledge of the day before, now it’s time to do IoT yourself. You’ll
work at the Rotterdam FabLab on IoT-prototypes

IoT as a technology is intransparent: the technology is ‘too complex’, data
structures and flows are commercial property and hence to be kept secret.
IoT as a concept uses everyday people as sources of information, but not
as subjects of data processing and making sense; they are just ‘intelligent
agents’ among other ‘intelligent agents’.
IoT as a practice keeps design, and thus decisions, to a technocratic elite:
ICT specialists, designers and consultants hired by corporations and
governments act to a large extent outside democratic control.
As a symbol and instrument of empowerment, Stadslab wants to provide open
source tools for everybody to actively take part in the Internet of Things.
In a two-day seminar/workshop, 11-12 April 2013, those interested will work at
Stadslab on gathering the knowledge, developing the skills and tools, and
documenting the process. Starting point for the seminar/workshop will be the
Manifesto for Do It Yourself Internet of Things Creation (De Roeck et al. 2012)
and the work of Saskia Sassen on intelligent cities:
“The challenge for intelligent cities is to urbanize the technologies they
deploy, to make them responsive and available to the people whose
lives they affect. Today, the tendency is to make them invisible, hiding
them beneath platforms or behind walls—hence putting them in
command rather than in dialogue with users. One effect will be to
reduce the possibility that intelligent cities can promote open source
urbanism, and that is a pity ... After all, the ability to adapt is how our
good old cities have outlived the rise and fall of kingdoms, republics,
and corporations.”

‘Alleen bij een juiste introductie kan zorgtechnologie een verbindende rol
spelen’. Marleen deelt haar ervaringen aan de hand van de projecten
Tamboerijn en Vitale Link:
Beide projecten hebben tot doel de zelfredzaamheid en welzijn van burgers
door middel van community vorming, e-health en domotica te ondersteunen.
Vanuit deze projecten worden burgers en zorg- en dienstverleners gestimuleerd
om de toepassingsmogelijkheden van deze applicaties te ontdekken en te
gebruiken.

‘Biomedische sensoren helpt je om data over je eigen gezondheid te
verzamelen’.
Wil je controle over je bloeddruk, hartslag, slaappatronen, gewicht, bloedsuiker,
etc.? Sense helpt je om data over je eigen gezondheid te verzamelen. Door alle
data uit verschillende sensoren te verzamelen in CommonSense, kun je de
informatie over je eigen gezondheid verrijken, eventueel in combinatie met
andere databronnen. Correleer bijvoorbeeld je slaappatronen met de
beurskoers, of zie hoe je hartslag wordt beïnvloed door lichamelijke inspanning.

‘Ondernemers in e-health apps kunnen grote impact hebben op leven van
patiënt en artsen’.
Er zijn verschillende manieren om over het gebruik van technologie na te
denken, bijvoorbeeld als neutraal instrument. Maar, om technologie als neutraal
instrument te zien doet geen recht aan de grote veranderingen die we
momenteel in de zorg zien. In plaats daarvan is het zinnig de invloed van
technologie in kaart te brengen. Door technologie te beschouwen als medium
tussen arts en zorg, tussen patiënt en zorg, en tussen arts en patiënt wordt
duidelijk dat technologie niet neutraal is.

Op vrijdagmiddag worden de IoT Days afgesloten met een bijeenkomst waar de
resultaten van de onderdelen in die week worden gepresenteerd. De middag
wordt ingeleid door Marianne Herbert. Afsluitend vindt een slotdebat plaats.

De muziek van Demdike Stare is een mix van oriëntaalse filmmuziek, Noorse
drone, gedrenkt in house flarden, dub en gemuteerde techno. Denk aan
soundtracks van bizarre obscure cult films die je nog nooit gezien hebt. Hierbij
vertonen ze ook nog excentrieke filmbeelden om de ervaring compleet te
maken. Andy Votel trakteert als DJ zijn luisteraars altijd op een bizarre trip door
de muziekgeschiedenis en schuwt geen enkele uithoek als er maar een groove
in verscholen zit.

Impact and innovation chances in the Sensing Society
Meer smartphones en tablets dan pc’s op internet, meer online apparaten dan
mensen: we bereiken een belangrijk omslagpunt in onze
informatiesamenleving. De hoeveelheid data die ontstaat door menselijk- én
machinegebruik groeit enorm, en daarvan is maar 20% gestructureerd! Welke
nieuwe devices en diensten ontstaan dankzij de meest recente innovatiegolf?
Hoe dragen we daarmee bij aan de grote maatschappelijke thema’s, zoals
veiligheid, zorg en milieu? In deze presentatie wordt de opkomst van de
‘Sensing Society’ aan de hand van wervende voorbeelden gepresenteerd.

Op maandag 3 december organiseerde het Rotterdam Open Data Initiatief
i.s.m. de Rotterdamse Verkeersonderneming en Hack de Overheid, de Open
Data sessie Ontwijk de File! Deze bijeenkomst was gekoppeld aan de challenge
van de Verkeersonderneming waarin teams worden uitgedaagd om met ideeën
te komen voor ICT toepassingen die mensen moeten stimuleren om files te
vermijden. Het winnende team wordt vandaag bekend gemaakt!

speciaal voor IoT Days Rotterdam een ‘mood’-meter ontwikkeld die de
beleving meet van bezoekers tijdens het festival. Het is een dynamische
meter die zowel fysiek als virtueel is. Er worden meerdere meters geplaatst
die op een simpel en gebruiksvriendelijk data verzamelen van de beleving
van het festival van bezoekers. Per locatie wordt de data verzameld en
ontsloten via een scherm waarop het totaalbeeld van alle meters te zien is.
Het geheel bestaat uit drie componenten:
• Fysieke moodmeters per locatie
• Een virtuele moodmeter in de vorm van een webapplicatie
• Data verwerkt in een dynamische infographic, zichtbaar via het web
en op de Mediawand van de Rotterdamse Schouwburg
