De openingstijden voor studenten voor de maquettetechnische voorzieningen in de
Vormstudiehal/ Zuid Serre zijn
opnieuw verruimd. Dit betekent
dat de machinale werkplaats, de
ruimte voor spuiten en schuimsnijden én de uitgiftebalie iedere
dag ononderbroken geopend
zullen zijn vanaf 09.00 tot 17.30
uur. De maquettetechnische
voorzieningen zullen in juni in
drukke periodes ook een aantal
avonden geopend zijn. De voorzieningen zijn dan tot 22.00 uur
geopend (dit geldt niet voor het
CAMlab).

In an ongoing process of revamping BK City, the street
has become more than just a showcase with models
lined up against one of its sides.
BK CITY – Now, the other side of the street
offers a comprehensive list of all the possible
MSc tracks and studios that can be studied at
the faculty. The initiative comes from the dean
who wished to provide comprehensive
information about education to students.
The polychromic street is now quite the sight
to behold, and although there were some
disagreements during the design phase
between the architect and the client, all is now
well and the wall is finished (for now). Each
department has a portion of the wall on which
its studios can hang up posters and above
these is a brief description of the semester
structure.
According to Facility Management, the
response has generally been positive and
talking to a couple of BSc 6 students only
confirms this. One of the students, says: “It's a
good, clear list and shows all the options”, but
another one adds: “It is handy, but only as a
list. If you want to make a choice, it's still
smart to attend an information evening and
ask around.” (PS)

Agenda voor herijking
en vernieuwing
In B Nieuws #02 van 22 maart 2010 werd verslag gedaan van de
toekomstvisie van het managementteam van Bouwkunde. Binnenkort komt de decaan met My living Faculty, een boekje waarin de
herijking en vernieuwingsplannen uiteengezet worden. In
B Nieuws alvast een preview.

BK City – Het College van
Bestuur van de TU Delft heeft de
faculteit Bouwkunde eind 2009
gevraagd om in 2011 een 0-begroting te bereiken en om in de
planperiode tot 2014 door
bezuiniging en samenwerking
met andere faculteiten 10%
besparing op de 1ste geldstroom
te realiseren. Deze opgave is op 4
maart 2010 besproken in het
bilateraal bestuurlijk overleg met
het College en managementteam.
Op 18 maart 2010 heeft de
faculteit in een brief het College
geantwoord en verzocht de
0-begroting een jaar later te
mogen realiseren.

vervolg. Op 20 mei bespreekt het
MT Bouwkunde de mogelijke
bijstelling in de interne allocatie
en de nieuwe hooglerarenstrategie.

Je kunt de dreigende
bezuinigingen die op ons
afkomen op twee manieren
het hoofd bieden: je kunt in
de zorgelijke, sombere
stresshouding gaan en alleen
maar gaan vechten tegen de
bierkaai om de schade te
beperken. Klagen en bewijzen
dat er al zo veel bezuinigd is
de afgelopen jaren. Afhouden
en het bastion
versterken. Ik
denk dat dat
op zich wel
wat kan
opleveren
in financiële
termen, maar
je inhoudelijke
oogst zal mager zijn. Wat
vooral negatief zal zijn is dat
de continue mopper- en
verdedigingshouding die daar
bij hoort ons uiteindelijk geen
vreugde en elan zal brengen.
Het zal ons slecht opbreken.
Ik wil het anders aanpakken. We moeten juist
proberen openingen te
zoeken voor verbeteringen,
nieuwe mogelijkheden voor
vereenvoudigingen, waarin
minder geld gecombineerd
wordt met nieuwe perspectieven. Ik denk dat we inhoudelijk moeten blijven. Dat zal
niet meevallen, maar ik ben er
van overtuigd dat in the end
een creatieve benadering ons
geen windeieren zal leggen
en dat er nieuwe kansen
kunnen ontstaan. Het klinkt
misschien als een cliché: maar
laten we er een uitdaging van
maken en al onze inventiviteit
aanwenden om er juist op
vooruit te gaan. Maak van het
nadeel dus voordeel.

Student
in Charge
In the last few months, there has been quite a stir
at the faculty concerning the Management Team
(MT). Simon Scheepens, the student member of MT
experienced it all.
B Nieuws decided to catch up
with Simon. “It was a challenging
year”, he says referring to the
happenings at the faculty. “But”,
he adds, “my predecessor might
have had it even more difficult in
her time with the fire, the big
move and the changing of the
deans”. As for the next academic
year, the biggest challenge

decisions are made after long deliberation and much debate
between all the members of MT.
“We realize that Almere is probably not the 'sexiest' place
to most Dutch students”, says Assistant Professor Thorsten
Schuetze of Urbanism, “but as a new town it is certainly
intriguing to study it”. “There was no budget for us, so we
had to find a partner who was willing to help us make
arrangements on accommodation and programme”
Schuetze adds. Almere was one such willing municipality,
always eager to put itself on the architectural and sustainability map of the Netherlands.

from a student point of view.
However, he is not elected and
does not represent the student
body. “This may sound strange,”
he admits, “but I do talk to my
fellow students and they often
ask me about what is going on”.
He also adds that students are
often very quick to criticize
something, but “that's as far as it
goes, there are very few people
willing to really stand up and
write something down or take
action.”
And what does it take for a
student to become a student
member of MT: “You need to be
organized and communicative.
When discussing budget proposals, there are a lot of technical
terms being spoken, so speaking
Dutch is also essential.” Students
interested submit a letter of
motivation and are then invited
for an interview. But it's too late
this year, the deadline falls one
day before this newspaper is
published. Better luck next year.
That Almere is a place worth studying is also highlighted
by the fact that the places for the foreign universities filled
up very quickly, there are still some places left for TU
Delft students. “On the other hand,” Thorsten

might want to get as far away from the built
environment as possible.
And then there's summer school. The TU Delft faculty of
Architecture has been collaborating with ETH Zurich, the
TU Graz and Stuttgart University for three years now in
International Summer Academy. This year, TU Delft is
hosting the event in Almere.
“Students can take action and

ask not what your faculty can do
for you, but what you can do for
your faculty.

inside and outside of Almere, workshops, lectures and
even one or two informal dinners, so that participants can
get to know each other outside of work environment. In
addition, lecturers from the four universities, will be joined
by architects, engineers and other professionals to establish a connection between the programme of the academy
and the practice.
The International Summer Academy 2010 “Sustainable
Building” takes place in Almere from 16 to 26 August, the
costs are 100 Euro's for the summer school and, if required,
further 300 euro for accommodation. The application

BIOGRAPHY
Kas Oosterhuis
Professor Kas Oosterhuis
(1951) studied architecture at
the Technical University of
Delft. In 1987-1988 he taught
as Unit Master at the AA in
London and worked and lived
in the former studio of Theo
van Doesburg for one year in
Paris together with visual artist
Ilona Lénárd. They renamed
their design studio ONL
[Oosterhuis_Lénárd] in 2004.
Starting in 2007 Kas Oosterhuis
became a registered architect
in Hungary, executing as
General Designer the CET
project. In 2000 Oosterhuis was
appointed Professor of Digital
Design Methods at the Technical University of Delft and is
currently leading a staff of 15
researchers at Hyperbody, the
knowledge center for Nonstandard and Interactive
Architecture at the TU Delft.

the ProtoSpace Laboratory.
The beginning of Hyperbody
“Protospace is a manifestation of
Hyperbody which was set up in
2000. I joined the faculty as a
professor of practice with the
focus on interactive architecture
and my aim from the start was to
introduce new technologies into
the design process. Hyperbody
was an alien body in the faculty
from the beginning and was
mentally isolated by many.
Contrarily, it has enjoyed success
among students and as a result
has grown into a department with
a staff of 15.”
An integrated approach
“I believe that the structure of the
faculty is outdated. The introduction of ICT in every discipline
including architecture in the last
decade strengthens this notion of
an out-dated structure. The
existing structure at Bouwkunde
is still in denial so we still have
these old divisions of architecture
and building technology. We have
championed an integrated
approach from the very beginning
where technology is embedded in
the design minds of the students
and tutors. Additionally, we reject
the approach of first creating a
spatial design and when that is
finished taking this finished
product to the structural engineer
or climate specialist to ask for
advice after the fact. This way of
working and thinking requires a
different approach and to accomplish this a new language must
be learned, new computer
languages, new programming
languages."
Collaboration in real time
"As all the new disciplines speak
that language, a dialogue
becomes possible between the
disciplines. A new way of
working must be developed to
adapt to this situation. This
should happen in real time. No
longer putting an idea down on
paper and then passing this along
to the next one who will then do
something with it and pass it on
to the next, rather they respond in
real time. Response and input,
right here, right now. This is the
definition of a dialogue. This is
quite ambitious but also fascinating as it brings together the
different disciplines in a completely different way. I believe
that the whole faculty should be
reorganized, and rethought to
include this approach for all
disciplines. For that, we need
tools and even spaces, verhicles
in which people can cooperate
and work together. We need a
new environment.”
Protospace
“We set up the first version of
Protospace in the old building in
the media department. That was
great, having Hyperbody being in
close proximity to the Media
department, as even those two
disciplines can share a common
language. The next generation of
Protospace was manifested in the
Floriade pavilion that we had
moved to Delft after the exhibition
ended. It was refurbished and
redesigned to make into the
Protospace laboratory. The iWeb
was the structure and the
Protospace laboratory was the
content. It opened a month before
the fire so we were not fortunate
in really getting the ball rolling.
Two years later we were able to
secure the new space in the building on the Julianalaan. It is
smaller than the iWeb and does
not have all the features that we
would have liked to have so we
consider it a temporary solution
as our longer-term ambition is to
build another Protospace laboratory outside. The reason for
building outside is because we
see the lab as a kind of server, as
a kind of out-post in front of the
faculty of architecture which can
collaborate with EWI, Aerospace,
Civil and Industrial Design
Engineering who we consider our
natural partners. This is why it
should be an outpost. This was an
idea originally developed with
Hans Beunderman and now
Wytze Patijn has inherited it. We
aim to make this active place
within the faculty for the next
year or two where the focus will
be on collaboration and interaction in real time.”
Interaction
“This concept of interaction is
worth clarifying: we see it as
something very elemental, not
just pushing a button and an
interface says hello or something
like that. We want to set up a

Global context
“I realize that it’s a long road.
On the other hand, we have
already been doing this for ten
years. Ten years ago, if you
searched for interactive archi-
tecture on the web you wouldn’t
find very much. If you google it
now then you will find a lot and

expertise. We have built many
prototypes in the past such as the
Interactive Tower, as well as
interactive facades, interactive
walls, interactive building
sections of a larger building etc.
These examples are recognized
by this global community.”
Complexity
“I would like to add something
about complexity. At the same
time, the development in my own
practice has been toward nonstandard architecture which
makes use of complex shapes and
forms. To make this possible we
need to deal with tons of data. In
the case of a rectangular volume
it’s easy: you have eight points.
You can even think of these eight
points and where to position
them. In that case the human
brain still manages to picture it.
In complex geometry that’s no
longer possible as everything is
rotating and changing in space
and the mind is not equipped to
grasp that. One need tools for
that. These are design tools of
course and we need to have new
fabrication tools to make them.
That’s a whole new world. Also
that world is largely unknown to
the ‘A’ section of the faculty,
though the ‘BT’ section has sort of
caught up with these developments. So funnily enough, I think
that there is more architecture
these days in building technology
than there is in architecture. That
explains the necessity to redefine
it completely. We should get rid of
the word building technology
because it’s actually architecture.
And we should also get rid of the
word architecture for the department of architecture because they
are historians. They are not
architects. Complexity has a
position in that discussion and we
can use this as a vehicle to open
up the discussion, to organize
lectures, to invite people to really
start now this discussion inside
the walls of this faculty. So
complexity and dealing with tons
of data is important and then you
need data management. It’s a
completely different job, a
technical one. Additionally, you
also have to know what you want
to do with it. You need direction,
intuition even, architectural
intuition to know what you want
to do with it. My absolute goal is:
this has to be embedded in
everything that has a spatial
meaning, every building component, every environmental object
you can think of. All these become
networks. All these components
have an id, an identity. So a
column is no longer an object, no
it is an idea and it has a relationship to everything else. So it’s not
an isolated object, rather it’s a
related object.”

‘De Schatkamer van Bouwkunde’ is ontstaan uit de behoefte van de
faculteit om haar erfgoed te beheren, te ontsluiten, aan te vullen en
beschikbaar te stellen als studiemateriaal en bruikleen.

In de loop van de jaren heeft de
Faculteit Bouwkunde een collectie
opgebouwd die na een sluimerend bestaan plotseling landelijke
bekendheid kreeg na de brand in
mei 2008. Een groot deel van de
collectie is sinds kort ondergebracht bij de afdeling Architectuur. Een nieuw tijdperk vraagt
om een nieuwe naam: Architectural Collections and Productions
(ACaP). Naast eerder genoemde
taken behoort ook het produceren
en presenteren van onderzoek tot
de taken. De faculteit had de
wens om de relaties met andere
onderwijs- en culturele instellingen te versterken.
Een groot van deel van deze
collectie is niet alleen van groot
belang voor onderwijs en onderzoek binnen de faculteit, maar is
er tevens uit voortgekomen. Zo
werd de stoelencollectie voordat
zij haar huidige museale status
kreeg en nu onder het beheer van
de sectie Geschiedenis valt, in de
jaren ‘70 opgezet als studiemateriaal voor de toenmalige sectie
Interieur om de relatie tussen
materiaal en vorm te kunnen
bestuderen. De vele uitzonderlijke
maquettes in de collectie zijn voor
het merendeel door studenten
vervaardigd binnen het kader van
groots opgezette studieprojecten
en soms onderdeel van complete
tentoonstellingen die als resultaat
van onderzoek door hun kwaliteit
bijdragen aan de internationale
positie en uitstraling van de
Faculteit.
In het verleden werden de
maquettes en de tentoonstellingen voornamelijk beheerd door de
oorspronkelijk initiatiefnemers.
Om te zorgen dat ze ook een
toekomst hadden en niet ongebruikt zouden blijven, namen
Robert Nottrot en Tessa Wijtman
in 2006 het initiatief om ze
zichtbaar te maken en te verzorgen. Zo ontstond het project ‘de
Schatkamer van Bouwkunde’ dat
financieel werd ondersteund door
de toenmalige decaan Hans

Er werd een begin gemaakt met
zorgvuldige inventarisatie,
intensieve restauratie en uitgebreide documentatie. Het project
is verder ontwikkeld onder het
decaanschap van Wytze Patijn.
Met een kleine staf werd er
gewerkt om ook de tentoonstellingen weer te laten reizen. De
schatkamer werd daarbij ondersteund door adviseurs Otokar
Mácel, Jan Molema en Max
Risselada die vanaf de jaren ‘80
prachtige tentoonstellingen
hebben gemaakt die niet alleen
op de faculteit werden getoond,
maar over de hele wereld reisden
en nu nog steeds in de belangstelling staan.
Het project ‘De Schatkamer van
Bouwkunde’ zou worden afgerond
met een grote tentoonstelling:
‘Architecture Collections, Past,
Present and Future’, waarvoor
een honderdtal modellen, stoelen,
publicaties en andere visuele
presentaties waren geselecteerd
voor presentatie in de Blokkenhal
en de vitrines op alle verdiepingen van de toenmalige faculteit.
Twee dagen voor de geplande
opening brandde ons faculteitsge-
bouw af en vreesde men het
ergste voor de geëxposeerde
stukken. Het kan een wonder
worden genoemd dat de maquettes en stoelen bijna ongeschonden uit de restanten van het
gebouw zijn gehaald; de vele
tentoonstellingen die nog in de
kelder stonden opgeslagen
gingen echter wel verloren.
De publiciteit rondom de brand en
de tentoonstelling was groot.
Ondanks veel aanbiedingen om
de tentoonstelling op andere
locaties te presenteren werd
besloten om de tentoonstelling uit
te stellen en deze pas in ons
nieuwe onderkomen weer op te
bouwen.
Na de brand was de schatkamer
weer terug bij af en werd in
eerste instantie de aandacht
vooral gericht op het bij elkaar
houden en inventariseren van de
geredde materialen, die op
verschillende locaties waren
opgeslagen. Ook werd begonnen
met de restauratie van het
beschadigde materiaal.
Ondertussen liepen de aanvragen
voor bruikleen van tentoonstellingen en maquettes gewoon door.
De Schatkamer heeft in de korte
tijd tussen 2008 en heden een
uitvoerige bijdrage geleverd aan
verschillende internationale
tentoonstellingen. Voor enkele
tentoonstellingen werden door
studenten onder begeleiding van
Robert Nottrot ook nieuwe
maquettes gemaakt, de collectie
groeit door deze opdrachten van
buiten gestaag. Deze maquettes
worden na tentoonstelling
opgenomen in de eigen collectie.
Het mag duidelijk zijn: Architectural Collections and Productions
levert een belangrijke bijdrage
aan de naamsbekendheid van
onze faculteit in binnen en
buitenland. Er wordt ook gewerkt
aan het op korte termijn beter
zichtbaar maken van de collectie,
via een website en een publicatie.
ACaP richt zich echter niet
uitsluitend naar buiten, maar
heeft onlangs ook samen met de
sectie Vormstudie de tentoonstellingsvitrines in de straat van BK
City ingericht. Er wordt bovendien ook gezocht naar mogelijke
samenwerking met andere
vormgevende sectoren binnen de
TU Delft.

De wijk Transvaal in Den Haag kampt met grote problemen op zowel stedenbouwkundig
als sociaal vlak. De gemeente en woningcorporatie Staedion proberen op dit moment de
problemen aan te pakken met behulp van grote herstructureringsplannen in de wijk.
AFSTUDEERPROJECT REGIEN KROEZE
STUDIO TRANSVAAL, PUBLIC REALM 2009-2010
De wijkvernieuwing in Transvaal gaf Studio Transvaal de kans om advies uit te
brengen over strategische ingrepen in de openbare ruimte en architectuur van
Transvaal.
De openbare ruimte en de aanwezige voorzieningen zijn over het algemeen
kwalitatief en kwantitatief matig, waardoor ze enkel dient als transitiezone.
Daarnaast kent Transvaal een grote verscheidenheid aan nationaliteiten op een
relatief klein oppervlak waardoor verschillende culturen en religies samenkomen.
Dit heeft sociale segregatie tot gevolg.
Een strategie van Studio Transvaal die inspeelt op deze problemen, is het inpassen
van een ‘brede parktijk-ov-school voor sport en gezondheid’ als centrale buurtvoorziening. Een dergelijke ingreep biedt ruimte voor het herstructureren van de buurt
op stedenbouwkundig niveau en biedt daarnaast kansen voor het implementeren
van ontbrekende buurtfuncties. Op deze manier kan een wisselwerking tussen
school en zorginstanties zorgen voor een hoger welzijnsniveau in de buurt en voor
contact tussen verschillende bewonersgroepen. Scholieren kunnen in dit model
diensten aanbieden via gekoppelde stagebedrijven die verband houden met sport
en gezondheid, maar de sport -en schoolvoorzieningen kunnen bijvoorbeeld ook
worden opengesteld voor buurtverenigingen.
Een goede openbare ruimte is er één die ruimte biedt aan meerdere groepen en
deze met elkaar in contact brengt. Door het invoegen van het spelelement in de
architectuur, komt dit contact op verschillende niveaus tot stand: via het uitlokken
van oogcontact tot en met het creëren van ruimte voor fysiek samenspel.
De theorie die schuilt achter het invoegen van ‘spel’, hangt samen met het creëren
van het gevoel van vrijheid. Vrijheid zorgt voor openheid en bereidheid tot sociale
interactie. Het gevoel van vrijheid wordt uitgelokt door het aangaan van het
avontuur. En het gevoel van avontuur komt voort uit het aangaan van improviserend gedrag. Door het uitlokken van improvisatie door architectuur, zal men
spelenderwijs gaan onderzoeken hoe om te gaan met de situatie en men zal
daardoor meer open staan voor derden.
De theorie is gebaseerd op het toevoegen van het spelelement in de architectuur
op verschillende gebouwniveaus. De hoofdstructuur van het gebouw kan door het
vooropstellen van zichtlijnen en onverwachte samensmelting van gebouwdelen
contact bevorderen. Dit uit zich in de Brede praktijk-ov-school in het creëren van
een kleine dichtheid aan ruimtes van verschillende groottes die op een ongewone
manier visueel met elkaar in contact zijn gebracht. Sportfuncties doorboren het
schoolgebouw op vernieuwende manieren. Bijvoorbeeld, een klimtoren doorboort
klaslokalen en een trimbaan passeert op vrije hoogte de sporthal en kruist het
auditorium, de buitenruimte en de gehele onderwijszone.
Als invulling van deze structuur kunnen kleinere multifunctionele architectonische
objecten worden geïmplementeerd die fysiek contact mogelijk maken door het
creëren van een dynamiek van beweging en contrast. Bijvoorbeeld, stapstenen van
verschillende formaten creëren een spannend raster en draaideuren zorgen voor
steeds weer een andere focus.
Door op deze wijze programma aan elkaar en aan de openbare ruimte te koppelen,
ontstaat er een interne verlenging van de openbare ruimte, die een nieuw impuls
aan de buurt geeft en wordt er een spil gecreëerd die op een vernieuwende en
zeer effectieve manier ingaat op de buurtproblematiek.

Groen
Steeds weer bekruipt mij
wrevel als collega’s of studenten
het verzamelbegrip ‘groen’
gebruiken. Het is alsof men zich
met alleen een kleurpotlood kan
kwijten van de taak om verantwoord planten toe te passen in
een ontwerp; tekenend voor een
tijdsgeest die nuance en precisie
lijkt uit te sluiten. Ervaring leert
dat door de inwoners van BK
City slechts weinig bomen
worden herkend, nog minder
andere planten en allerminst
relaties tussen de plantenwereld
en het rijk van de dieren.
Bomen zijn de ‘highrise’ van de
flora en hebben door hun
verticaliteit grote invloed op de
architectuur van de stad en het
landschap, daarbij vaak gesteund door de plantenwereld
die zich dichter bij de grond
manifesteert. Majestueus of
lieflijk, monumentaal of elegant,
sierlijk of grotesk: bomen
hebben karakter, tot in de
nerven van hun bladeren. Per
jaargetijde tonen zij steeds
anders hun ware aard door hun
unieke wortels, stam, bast,
takkenbos, blad, bloem, vrucht
en geometrie. Nuttig, gastvrij,
duurzaam, levendig en oogstrelend. Bomen zijn grondstofleverancier, voedselproducent,
klimaatregelaar, filter van lucht,
licht en geluid.
Bomen knuffelen is heel intiem,
bomen bij de naam noemen is
respectvol. Er zijn 1300
Acaciasoorten, 230
Esdoorns, 200 Dennen,
300 Wilgen, 400 Prunussen, 100.000 boomsoorten
wereldwijd!
Uit een lange lijst van
namen van bomen die in
Nederland voorkomen heb ik
enkele geselecteerd waarvan ik
denk dat die mogelijk bekend in
de oren klinken. Heeft u bij
iedere naam een beeld? Ook
van de variëteit per soort?
Daar gaat ie: Es, Den, Eik, Els,
Iep, Berk, Beuk, Kers, Kwee,
Peer, Spar, Wilg, Abeel, Appel,
Ceder, Hulst, Lariks, Linde,
Morel, Pruim, Taxus, Vlier,
Acacia, Cipres, Ginkgo, Mispel,
Prunus, Esdoorn, Moerbei,
Plataan, Walnoot, Hazelaar,
Kastanje, Kurkboom, Magnolia,
Meidoorn, Duindoorn, Kornoelje, Netelboom, Sleedoorn,
Vogelkers, Honingboom,
Jeneverbes, Levensboom,
Lijsterbes, Tulpenboom,
Fluweelboom, Mammoetboom,
Trompetboom, Christusdoorn,
Doodsbeenderenboom, Vijg en
Olijf (ja, die ook).
Bij de Bouwpub, tegen de
oostvleugel van BK City, staat
een eenzame boom, die zich
koestert in de luwte en de zon
en daarom voor zijn soort flink
groot is geworden. Wie mij als
eerste na het lezen van deze
column aanspreekt en de juiste
naam van deze boom weet – in
het Latijn mag ook – beloof ik
een fles wijn.

book review on AA Words One:
Supercritical: Peter Eisenman Meets
Rem Koolhaas.
The Laughter and
the Joke
“Away with seriousness” was once
the slogan coined by Bruno Taut
and I am a supporter of those who
combat every overdoses of heaviness. But how far should one go?
And if aside from a superficial
lightness one gets loads and loads
of crap? Then one could really laugh
and wonder about the fate of all
mankind. Can fame become such a
blindfold? Not only for kings and
their lackeys but also for the man on
the street? Is success the only
measure and fame the ultimate
goal?
When the term “Superdutch”
appeared on the cover of a book,
harsh words were heard about that
prefix ‘super’. Of course, Superdutch
was a stone in a bucket conceived
as a marketing strategy. Now
we have a green booklet
called “Supercritical”.
With it the A.A. started
its publication series
‘Architecture Words’,
whatever that means. This
publication deals with two
architects who have long
reached the top of the charts of
relative celebrity: Rem Koolhaas
and Peter Eisenman. These are two
architects who, despite all their
machinations, I have never considered to be very critical. Yet they
seem to have a monopoly on the
word aside from, of course, all the
“critical thinkers” that are present
in abundance at every architectural
school in the West. Koolhaas and
Eisenman are not presented as
“critical thinkers” but as architects
with a “critical practice”. Here
baloney is produced and that can be
a dangerous practice for which
some historical precedents can be
found that are not very pleasant to
summarize in nuce. Strangely
enough “Ueberkritisch” sounds
better than supercritical and is
probably more appropriate for the
content.
According to Koolhaas, journalism is
a profession without discipline.
There would be some truth in that
statement if journalism remained an
“ephemera” and “in suspense”.
Who can catch a word when it is
only spoken? But when it is written
that which is involved is … all
discipline. He continues: ‘Journalism is only a regime of curiosities,
applicable to any subject, and I
would say that this is still a very
important driving factor in my
architecture’. So, journalism – living
day by day, being present in the
actual world? – can be a driving
force for any profession, craft or
métier. Curiosity is always healthy
but it can only become instrumental
and an automatism, much like
“critical”. And it certainly is not the
exclusive privilege of the journalist.
In 1976 Koolhaas gave a famous
lecture at the A.A. in London on
Dali, the ‘critical method’ & Le
Corbusier. He started by saying that
his lecture was ‘an implied criticism
of the entire critical establishment
… which for as long as I have been
involved in architecture seems to be
a small army of tormentors who
almost never illuminated or taught
me anything, and have brought me
to tears on many occasions’.
Fortunately, the entire establishment was only a small army, but
who were they? Banham, Huxtable,
Frampton, Tafuri were some of the
leading spirits at that time! What an
audacious, Cervantes-like task!
From behind the back of Salvador
Dali he then launched a strange
attack on Le Corbusier. It was born
out of a frustrated admiration,
similar to that of Philip Johnson, the
real bastard of architecture, who
wore the glasses of L.C. and
rejected everything else belonging
to the famous French-Swiss
architect. Koolhaas took L.C. too
seriously and stated that ‘whereas
Dali is in fact rational with his
method of paranoia, Le Corbusier is
really a clinically paranoid person
who tries to pretend he is rational’.
One should recall that this was
pronounced in a time that it was
both politically offensive to be called
‘a Marxist’ or ‘a fascist’, when
instead they should have used the
words ‘fascistic Marxist’ or ‘Marxist
fascist’, stressing the fact that
differences were far less incisive
and crucial than they appeared at
that time. In other words pureness
is an illusion! Ambiguity is normal.
This world is contradictive and
complex and totally ruled by fools
who set the rules of the game! And
these fools are the so-called experts
who in the end get the bonuses
they don’t deserve.
Mac Americanism – the advancing
macdonaldisation of Amicanism as
the standard of everything – is truly
a difficult phenomenon. The same
can be said of the popularity of
Koolhaas, a popularity that
Eisenman never reached despite all
the money that he spent to achieve
used for that purpose. This popularity should be considered in both a
restricted way – the delirious Dutch
tradition – and in a more general –
he would say globalistic – context.
Only then can we analyze the
complicated foundations of an
attitude that is not only popular in
so-called intellectual circles that
depend on far stretched readings
and interpretations and who once
were engaged, but also populist at
the same time. Hence his success in
countries that are eager to develop
towards a capitalistic westernization. Anyone can understand the
message of Koolhaas, even if in the
end there is none. A sign of
impotence of the architect whose
cultural position and societal
influence is still highly overrated by
members of the branch? The goal is
clear – one has to stay on the edge
of being present, even when absent.
This is the conclusion to be drawn
from such tragic fates as those of
James Dean and Marilyn Monroe – a
prefect pair and a perfect future!
The booklet provides entertainment,
the ‘critical voices’ are heavy and
hilarious in many ways and we can
only laugh at the seriousness of all
its contemplations. It is a nice
historical document full of ideology
and adds an extra detail to the
biographies of Koolhaas and
Eisenman. The discussions between
the architects are amusing and are
of a quality better than much that is
produced today by loyal and disloyal
followers of the faith. The commentaries of the critics are less fun and
illustrate that enjoyment and
suffering can be neighbors. But it
also shows that Supercritical is a
pebble thrown in a metal glass (sic!)
It makes noise but that’s all.
Contradiction has become a punch
line, but the reasons for all the
contradictions are not investigated.
In the end, the world can drink and
go home, again! And maybe
tomorrow we can, for the rather
naïve love of criticism, criticize ‘the
criticism of the entire critical
establishment’.

FSR 2010-2011
Wij zijn de nieuwe FSR, voor het collegejaar 2010/2011! De FSR is de Facultaire Studentenraad van
Bouwkunde en deze bestaat uit 9 studenten die zich inzetten om de studie Bouwkunde te verbeteren. Komend jaar nemen (van links naar rechts) Sarah Rach, Maarten Caspers, Janelle Zoutkamp,
Lieneke van Hoek, Paul Oligschläger, Joran van Blokland, Virpi Heybroek, Stijn Joosten en Emiel
Meijerink (niet op foto) deze taak op zich. Iedereen heeft een eigen functie, maar de functieverdeling wordt pas na de zomer gemaakt. We willen ons toch al voorstellen, zodat iedereen weet waar
hij of zij terecht kan met klachten en opmerkingen.
Of het nu gaat om het gebouw, de voorzieningen, het bindend studieadvies, de aankomende
numerus fixus, de bezuinigingen of eenvoudigweg de studie; wij kijken kritisch naar alle aspecten
en zorgen dat Bouwkunde nog beter wordt. De FSR heeft op bepaalde reglementen instemmingsrecht, waardoor nieuwe reglementen tegengehouden kunnen worden als deze voor studenten
onacceptabel zijn. Verder heeft de FSR adviesrecht en als laatste initiatiefrecht. Dit is een van de
belangrijkste middelen om oplossingen aan te reiken voor problemen waar studenten tegenaan
lopen. Daarom is jouw mening enorm belangrijk! De voorgaande FSR heeft al bereikt dat de
openingstijden van de vormstudiehal zijn verruimd en het ketelhuis beter is aangepast aan de
wensen van de student. Daarnaast houdt de FSR alle bezuinigingsplannen scherp in de gaten om de
kwaliteit van het onderwijs in stand te houden.
De komende weken zullen wij op Bouwkunde rondlopen en kan iedereen bij ons terecht. Je kunt
natuurlijk ook altijd je klacht of opmerking achterlaten in het FSR-klachtenboek bij Stylos, of mailen
naar [email protected]. Wij laten nog van ons horen!
