Pickle-ball is a fun and exciting game great for all ages and fitness levels. Played with oversized paddles and a whiffle ball on a court the same dimensions as badminton (smaller than a tennis court) this game is slower and easier than tennis. Yet, it still has the excitement with lobbing, fast volley exchanges, and passing shots from the baseline. Robert Phillis is leading the charge to bring this game to Sonora. He has already made headway and has a tennis court lined for Pickle-ball in Twain Harte. Check out the bulletin board in the Adult Center for a newspaper article on Pickleball and Robert’s passion for the game. Before we can add this game to our varied options at Sonora Sports & fitness we need to know there is a group of interested people. Please contact Tim Gallagher if you think you’d be interested in playing. Please leave a note for Tim at the desk in either building with your name and a note saying you would like to play Pickle-ball. If enough people want to play we will make it happen. Think you know who this might be? Take a guess, then check your answers on the back of the newsletter. Doing something as simple as standing on one leg can bring motor neurons back! Participating in a tai‐chi or yoga class will improve your balance and stability as well. Set up an appointment with a personal trainer and get a balance centric workout! Build your strength. Muscle strength declines as we age—around 10% per decade for women starting in their 40s and men starting in their 60s. A recent study found that the men ages 50 to 85 who had lost the most muscle were also the most likely to fall. Weight bearing exercise can undo that loss. Two months of resistance training can reverse two decades of typical muscle loss! Focus especially on your leg muscles. Eat your protein! Seniors should eat in grams about half their weight in pounds. If you weigh 150 pounds, you should be eating around 75 grams of protein per day. Protein will help keep your muscle mass up. Soak up the sun! Make sure you get your vitamin D. Five studies have shown that supplementing people in their 70s and 80s with 800 to 1000 IU a day of vitamin D lowers the risk of falling by 20%. Monitor your meds. Are your medications causing dizziness or sleepiness? Both these side‐effects increase the chances of tripping and falling. Check with your doctor and pharmacists to make sure your drugs aren’t interacting in a harmful way. Look at your vision. Make sure you have your vision checked once a year. Not seeing an object or a curb is a surefire way to increase your chances of tripping. Source: Nutrition Action July/August 2008 Ages 3 to 5 years Only $15! Session III: Aug 5th—Aug 14th Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30am to 10:00am Doug Duffield, Matt Frediani, and Tim Trujillo completed a Half Ironman Triathlon called Vine Man 70.3 on June 20th. Mike Callahan (wasn’t able to finish due to a bike problem), Matt, and Tim finished 8th, 11th and 5th in their age group for the swim portion. Even finishing a half-ironman is an accomplishment in itself but this group finished with great times! Congratulations guys! Karen and Howard Painter, and Jason Land participated in the June Lake Triathlon on July 12th. It was Jason’s first triathlon and he came in at an incredible 2:54:37. When you think of yoga do you have a mental image of people bending their body into impossible positions that you could never achieve? Or do you think yoga couldn’t possibly be a “real workout” since it’s mostly just stretching, breathing and meditating? You are not alone. Long time member Mike Miller had similar thoughts up until a year ago when he stepped into his first yoga class. Mike has been a member of Sonora Sports & Fitness for 16 years. He is 52 years old and has spent all of his life as a long‐distance runner. Mike has been running long distance for over 35 years! He has been a teacher for 21 years and a Cross Country Coach for 20 years. Mike is primarily a marathon and ultra marathon runner, meaning his events range from 30 to 100 miles of running! He tries to run 2 to 3 marathons and 2 to 3 ultra marathons each year. Obviously he is constantly training. With all this experience it would seem there is nothing more that Mike could know about running. Although knowing what to do and doing it are often two different things; he does admit stretching before and after runs was never a priority. Luckily, he has been injury free for most of his running life. However, during the winter/spring of 2007 he was nagged by a recurring hamstring injury that was affecting his training, racing, and times. He also felt his already limited flexibility was diminishing. Maybe it was time to admit that age and lack of stretching might be catching up with him. After doing the prescribed physical therapy and healing his injury (thanks to BONES) he felt he needed another routine. A friend suggested yoga saying it was an excellent way to maintain flexibility, increase strength and relax. Mike was skeptical because like many of us, his image of yoga was people bent into impossible shapes and meditating. However, he figured he would give it a shot. The first class he took with Hope was “an eye (and body) opener”. Mike said, “Heck, I didn’t even know I had hips until we did certain moves.” He also said the class pushed his limits, which as a constantly training athlete, this was what he was used to. That first class he not only felt pushed physically, he also left feeling completely relaxed and rejuvenated. He said that even though he was a novice he felt very welcomed and described Hope's class as a “safe and non‐judgmental place”. Hope took the time to patiently explain all the positions. Particularly enjoyable for Mike was the fact that it was a “no‐brainer”; as a participant he said he didn’t have to think about what to do next. Hope does all the thinking leaving the participants free to concentrate on the muscle groups. After that first time, Mike pledged to stick with it twice a week for a year. This month marks one year later, and while he can’t quite touch his toes his whole body is stronger and more limber. He has not had any injuries this year and is less stressed—even his blood pressure dropped and he is stronger than ever! Mike says, “I would definitely recommend [Yoga] to anyone but especially to competitive athletes. Many of us believe that if it doesn’t make you breathe hard… and leave you exhausted that it isn’t worth the time. I think that yoga has given me time meaning that by slowing down twice a week and doing something to rejuvenate and heal my body and mind I can continue to run at the YOGA CLASSES OFFERED pace and distance I enjoy for many more years.” Mondays & Wednesdays at 9:00 am and 5:30pm and Fridays at 10:00am Guess Who? Ralph Blum Answer from page 3 If you guessed Heather Boone you were correct! Heather has been at Sonora Sports & Fitness for 16 years! Many of you may know Heather from her job as the Child Care Manager. She’s watched many of your children grow up over the years. Heather has recently transitioned to work in the membership office. She also does our Fun & Fit classes for 3 to 5 year olds. She loves working here because of the members and her co-workers. If you couldn’t tell by the answers to our questions Heather is passionate about her family and about fitness. She loves to run and swim. When not at the fitness center working or working out Heather is probably spending time with her husband and two adorable girls Kendall (6) and Ella (3). Make sure you say hello to Heather next time you see her at the desk, in the pool or pounding out the miles on the treadmill. All of her fellow employees here at the fitness center certainly feel lucky to get to work and workout with an upbeat, hardworking, happy person.
