Yamaha Trumpets
It’s not easy making the
world’s best trumpets.
Yamaha maintains full-time designers whose entire job
centers around a single task; creating better trumpets.
But that isn’t enough...
In order to research the needs of busy professional
musicians, and changing trends in the musical world,
Yamaha has R&D Ateliers strategically located in cities
throughout the world. Instrument specialists at these
engineering outposts are in constant communication
with many of the world’s greatest instrumental artists.
These musical artists work side by side with Yamaha’s
technical artists, studying and analyzing how to improve
what are already great instruments. But again, R&D
can’t function alone...
New ideas from the ateliers are sent back to Yamaha
headquarters in Hamamatsu Japan, where the designers
transform them into actual designs. These designs are
given to the highly-skilled artisans at Yamaha’s Toyooka
Custom Shop, where parts and prototypes are put
together by hand and sent back to the R&D Ateliers.
After extensive experimentation and use of prototypes in
performance situations over a long period of time, the
final specifications are decided. And then the
production engineers figure out how these great
instruments can be produced in consistent high quality.
There are a lot of very talented and highly motivated
people behind each Yamaha trumpet. They are
dedicated to producing the best trumpets in the world.
For you!
The Xeno Artist Model series trumpets are a special line
developed with specific leading orchestral trumpeters.
The series offers virtually the same instruments as the
individually ‘customized’ models used by those top artists.
Please see the separate Artist Model catalogue for more details
or ask your local retailer.

Lead-free Solder
All Yamaha trumpets are made using lead-free solder,
showing Yamaha’s long time concern for the environment.
We spent years studying the acoustic changes brought about
by the various possible alternatives, and we have discovered
a new solder which is not only better for the environment but
actually adds harmonic breadth to the sound.

The Xeno’s heavyweight construction produces a solid tone core for a rich strong sound that won’t spread or break up no matter
how hard you push it. It blows freely and comfortably, while still providing enough air resistance for quick response and superb tonal
flexibility. And the hand-hammered one-piece bell gives an agile, quick response with a beautiful tone.
Xeno B trumpets offer a choice of bore sizes; medium large for versatility, and large for a broad sound with plenty of power.
Bell material options for B and C Xenos include; yellow brass - for clear sound with strong projection, and gold brass – for warmer,
deeper sound.

The
Professional Model B Trumpets
All Trumpets Are Not Alike.
Perfect For All-Around Playing...
The Z was born of Yamaha’s long and close partnership with the legendary trumpeter Bobby Shew. Bobby is
an incredibly versatile musician, and to meet all his playing requirements he needed one super efficient
instrument which could scream out a powerful lead, or play soft, mellow ballades. He finally found that
instrument in the Z.
The original YTR-6310Z was considered by many leading artists to be the best trumpet on the market, and
they were skeptical when they learned that Yamaha would attempt to improve it. But trumpet designer Shunichi Niwata and R&D
specialist Bob Malone worked together with Bobby using all the special techniques we’d learned since designing the first Z.
The handmade bell is one of the biggest we make, and its tapering thickness gives players a very ‘open’ and comfortable response as
well as better feedback into how they sound. The flat-dome bell rim helps players create their own personal tonal colors.
We’ve kept the same basic design concept which made the original Z so popular: the precise leadpipe taper and super efficient stepbore design. But we have improved on it in many subtle ways, often using techniques we learned in developing the heavyweight Xeno
trumpets. As a result, the Custom Z offers an unprecedented amount of tonal richness and depth.
Yamaha’s professional medium-weight models are the perfect all-around trumpets. They’re at home in any setting, from studio to big
band, concert band, chamber group, or orchestra. We offer two models to meet the needs of almost any players. The 6335 features a
medium-large bore and a yellow-brass bell for a big sound with clear projection. It has the kind of flexibility needed for playing in a
quintet or studio work, but enough tonal power for lead or orchestral work. The 6345 offers a large sized bore with a gold-brass bell
for a warm, rich, commanding tone. Both are ideal for those who need versatility in their horn, and are looking for an instrument that
will play and sound just right in any group or setting.
Bobby Shew
Bobby Shew is one of the greatest
jazz trumpeters of all time.
Equally at home in a variety of
genres, he is incredibly versatile
and is renowned both for his
powerful lead playing and for his
expressive solos.
Here is some advice from Bobby on how to
first approach the horn:
“The 8310Z is designed for tremendous efficiency.
That means great sound with great ease of playing.
When you test play this instrument, be sure to “back off”
to ensure that you don’t overblow it. Start with simple
scales or glissandos up and down within your normal
comfortable range until you get used to not working so
hard when you play. Enjoy the world of EASY PLAYING
and may you never be the same!!”

Intermediate Models
Designed by the same team that produced our top pro models, these trumpets share many of the same qualities, and are
characterized by a rich full tone with accurate intonation. Our skilled craftsmen put their knowledge and experience into every step of
the production, from hand-lapping the slides and pistons to the final adjustments and test playing. They feature Monel pistons for
quick and reliable valve action, and the entire inner bore taper—from mouthpiece receiver to the bell—has been scientifically
designed for beautiful tone color, comfortable response, and as much sound as you want. The YTR-4435 is a C trumpet, and it comes
with a set of four slides which can convert it to B .
Standard Models
Our Standard model trumpets also owe much of their basic design to the pro series. Like the pro models, they feature carefully
centered intonation and a surprisingly rich and full tone. But in addition they are easy to play, and easy to sound good on. Thus even
beginners are soon able to play in tune, with a rich solid sound—a fact which helps them establish a strong musical foundation. The
Standard models offer a choice of either a gold lacquer or silver-plate finish. The YTR-2435 is in C and comes with an extra main
tuning slide which converts it to B .

E, E & D Trumpets
Piccolo Trumpets & G/F Trumpet
YTR-9630 E trumpet – Especially well suited for use in place of B or C trumpets, due to its large sized 5” bell (bigger than the bell of many B trumpets)
which gives a broad warm sound. A 4th valve extends the lower range making it possible to play most B and C trumpet parts, and the added weight from the
extra valve adds substance to the sound.
The YTR-9830 piccolo trumpet – Pitched in B , it has an extra leadpipe to convert it to A,
and a fourth valve for extended low range and for use with alternate fingerings.
YTR-9630
YTR-9830
With their brilliant sound, clear, crisp attack, and excellent high register control, these trumpets were originally used mainly for
performance of Baroque music. But now they are increasingly played as a more ‘secure’ alternative to B and C trumpets—especially
for playing treacherous high passages. We offer several different styles and variations in our Custom series.
Though Piccolo Trumpets are generally used to play the difficult and high first trumpet parts from the Baroque era, more and more
modern composers are also creating contemporary pieces for these exciting instruments. Yamaha piccolo trumpets are all easy to
play, and offer a beautiful tone with excellent intonation.

Rotary Trumpets
Developed with leading players, these instruments represent the finest in the Germanic trumpet tradition. Their tone is round, warm
and dark, but with a focused core for excellent projection. They are easy to play, and blend well with the other woodwinds and brass
of the orchestra, yet have the power to fill the concert hall with glorious sound. And conductors especially appreciate the way their
tone holds together without becoming too brassy or spreading, no matter how loudly you play.
Flugelhorns
Flugelhorns have a soft, mellow, dark sound with beautiful lyrical qualities; they are especially favored for jazz ballads. Yamaha
Flugelhorns have overcome the inconsistencies of intonation traditionally associated with these instruments, and offer a very
comfortable response. The YFH-6310Z was developed with the legendary artist Bobby Shew and in addition to superb tonal flexibility,
features an especially easy high register. The YFH-631G offers the traditional Yamaha flugelhorn style with a free blowing response.
Both feature triggers on the third valve slide for fine intonation adjustments. The YFH-2310 offers beautiful sound, at an affordable
price, while the YFH-436G is a German style rotary valve flugelhorn.

B Cornets
Intermediate
The Xeno name has become well established as the brand of choice for discerning
trumpet and trombone players. And now Yamaha has incorporated what they've
learned developing these orchestral instruments, into some new cornets. The Xeno
cornets were developed in close collaboration with some of the worlds best players
and in particular David King, cornet soloist, Head of Performance Studies at the
University of Salford and principal conductor of the Yorkshire Building Society band.
David worked closely with Frankfurt based Yamaha R&D expert Thomas Lubitz, and
the new instruments result from 2 1/2 years of research and experiments.
YCR-4330G
David King is one of the most dynamic
figures in the brass band movement and has
accomplished extraordinary musical
achievements as a soloist, conductor, and
educator. As a cornet soloist David has won
numerous awards including the British
Open Solo Championship for five
consecutive years and the prestigious
International Brass Musician of the Year.
David is also regarded as one of the greatest conductors to arise
from the brass band world and has represented England in the
European Brass Band Championships on eleven occasions, winning
an unprecedented ten times.

Mark Gould
Rod Franks
Former principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Gould is also a soloist
adept at a wide range of musical styles. He is trumpet professor at the Juilliard School,

“The Xeno trumpets have a smooth beautiful sound. They are the most in tune C
trumpet I have ever played and also the most versatile.”
After an early career in a variety of groups—from Black Dike Mills Band to the Philip
Jones Brass Ensemble, Franks became principal trumpet of the London Symphony
Orchestra. In addition to myriad classical recordings, he can also be heard on the sound
tracks of many Hollywood movies.
“The Xeno has great projection whilst keeping a warm sound. Whether loud or quiet,
the response is always secure. And intonation throughout is spot on. This is the best
trumpet I have ever played on.”
Allen Vizzutti
Bobby Shew
Virtuoso soloist in a multitude of musical genres–from jazz to classical– Vizzutti’s
extended playing range and incredible technique have thrilled audiences around the world.
“I have used the complete line of Yamaha trumpets for 20 years. I play them for
one reason and one reason only; because they are fantastic. In my musical life I

trumpet always helps me meet the demands of the professional music world. Their
workmanship, quality, consistency and beauty of sound are world class.”
One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time. He is incredibly versatile and is renowned
both for his powerful lead playing and for his expressive solos.

play them is because they make my job easier. In studios, concert halls, clubs,
whatever the gig, my Yamaha lets me concentrate on making “Music” and I don’t
have to worry about anything else.”
18
Nicholas Payton is one of the most outstanding young jazz artists. He has a unique
musicality which is constantly evolving.
“From the beginning, SOUND has always been the catalyst for the formulation of
my musical ideas. As my concept of sound may change from moment to moment,
I need an instrument that can go along with me for the ride. Over the years, I’ve
tried many horns, but I’ve always struggled with sacrificing one thing or another.
Now with Yamaha I no longer need think about how to overcome the trumpet, all I
have to do is “Be The Sound”, and the rest is taken care of.”
Tiger Okoshi teaches at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. His unique musical
personality and amazing trumpet technique make Okoshi one of the most exciting jazz
trumpeters.
“When I’m playing my horn on the stage, all I want to do is to paint the air with
my colorful sound. Fun is thinking about ‘How can I ?’ and ‘How should I ?’
Choices between long and short strokes, quickly or slowly, high in the canvas or low,
brighter color or darker, with fat brush or skinny pen...the fact is, I make up my
mind and play them before I know it. Paint with one note at a time. I don’t want to feel so much of
‘playing the trumpet...’ Only some instruments can offer musician to be in a true world of art.”
Brian Lynch
James Morrison
Brian Lynch is one of the most sought after jazz artists around. He has played in many top
bands including the Horace Silver Quintet, Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, Eddie Palmieri’s
Afro-Caribbean Jazz Octet, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and the Phil Woods Quintet.
“I’ve finally found an instrument that gives me everything I need! The horn never
lets me down no matter how demanding the musical context or how much I want
to put into my improvised line. Thank you, Yamaha, for helping me to keep
searching and extending my playing.”
Jazz soloist and multi-instrument virtuoso.
“I started using a Yamaha student trumpet in 1975 and have played their
professional instruments for 22 years. Only my Yamaha instruments deliver the
quality and consistency I need for my musical career.”

musical settings.”
Michael Bogart has played lead and solo trumpet with U.S. Navy Band and Maynard
Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau. He is now a member of the Tower of Power.
“I’ve really enjoyed my relationship with YAMAHA. The horns are simply the best
built, best playing instruments on the market today and my new 8310Z is perfect
for the demands of playing lead with Tower of Power.”
Stuart Laughton
Joe Burgstaller
Founding member of The Canadian Brass, Laughton recently rejoined the ensemble
after pursuing a successful career as soloist and chamber music artist.
“Yamaha instruments are a very special and important part of my world of
music. I love their ability to blend with other voices and I appreciate the
remarkable evenness of tone through wide dynamic variations. I’m a Yamaha
artist for life!”
Before joining The Canadian Brass in 2001, Josef Burgstaller was North America’s
busiest trumpet soloist, performing over 50 solo concerts every season.
“Yamaha trumpets have proven themselves ideal companions in the wide latitude
of musical styles and circumstances that the Canadian Brass experience demands.
Whether it’s performing in front of the Philadelphia Orchestra or with the New York
Philharmonic Brass, performing on television and radio, recording in the studio,
or one of our 100 concerts worldwide every year, Yamaha instruments have never
let me down. Yamaha leads the way with a unique combination of art, humanity and science that
consistently results in the ultimate instrument, one that is capable of adapting to any situation
imaginable.”
