Ponzio’s and Cooper Come
Together to Fight Lung Cancer
Just days before he passed away, Jim Fifis, the
longtime owner of Ponzio’s diner, had one last job
for his sons: advocate for a cure for lung cancer
and work to raise awareness about the dangers of
smoking.
“My father never asked for much so his request
stuck with us,” said Nick Fifis. “He did not want
other families to have to go through the pain we
went through.”
To honor the elder Fifis’ dying wish, the Fifis
family partnered with The Cooper Foundation to
establish the Jim Fifis Lung Cancer Research Fund
at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Fifis family and The
Cooper Foundation will host a benefit dinner at
Ponzio’s in Cherry Hill to honor the memory of
Jim Fifis and raise money for the fund.
Now in its fifth year, the fund has raised
$400,000 to help ensure patients have access to
the most advanced and most up-to-date cancer
care available.
“The Cooper Foundation is a proud to partner
with the Fifis family in honoring Jim Fifis and
continuing his legacy of giving back to the
community,” said Susan Bass Levin, president
and CEO of The Cooper Foundation. “Together,
through research and education, we can continue

Automotive Named Regional
Board Chair for United Way
Melinda K. Holman, Chairman of Holman
Automotive, has been named chair of the regional
Board of Directors for United Way of Greater
Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ).
Holman will lead the regional board for a two-year term
and succeeds Lon Greenberg, Chairman of the Board of
UGI Corporation, who served as chair from 2013-2015.
“We are thrilled to have Mindy at the helm of our
Board as we continue our work to change lives and
strengthen communities – one child, one adult and
one family at a time,” said Jim Cawley, president and
CEO of UWGPSNJ. “She believes in the importance
of giving back, and her passion for helping others
has become part of Holman Automotive’s culture.
Her commitment to improving our region is truly
inspirational, and we’re grateful to have her as our
partner to drive measurable, lasting Impact that none of
us can achieve alone.”
Holman has been an integral United Way volunteer
for nearly 20 years, following in the footsteps of her
grandfather and father, who supported United Way
in its early years. During the 2012 merger of seven
local United Ways to form UWGPSNJ, Holman
served as the co-chair
of the regional design
team, having previously
served as United Way
of Camden County’s
chair of the board, vice
chair of the board and
campaign cabinet chair.
Her leadership has
also inspired Holman
Automotive employees to
raise more than $1 million
annually in support of
United Way.
