ASBA Board Minutes
Summer Meeting, 2005
The Board of Directors of the
American Southdown Breeders’
Association held their annual summer
Board meeting at the Pennsylvania
Livestock Evaluation Center in
Pennsylvania Furnance, Pennsylvania,
on July 28, 2005. This was the site of
the 2005 National Sale and National
Junior Show also.
Those directors in attendance
were: Donald Hopkins, Brian Forsee,
Darrell Howard, Jeff Repasky, Lee
Pettey, and Gary Kwisnek. Those
directors via conference call were: C.J.
Robinson, L.C. Scramlin and Patty
Abell. Also in attendance was past
Secretary of Agriculture for the state of
Pennsylvania, Samuel E. Hayes.
President Kwisnek called the
meeting to order at 8:34 p.m. It was
moved by Donald Hopkins and seconded by Brian Forsee to accept the minutes of the previous meeting as
Distributed. Motion passed.
The President then called for
committee assignments with the first
being the nomination committee. It was
recommended by this committee that
Barbara Bishop of Rio, Wisconsin, fulfill the term of Kurt Shattuck, who had
recently resigned. This would be the
Region 2 at large position. With no further nominations, Barbara Bishop was
appointed to fulfill this position and welcomed to the Board meeting.
The Executive Secretary then
gave a report on the income and
expenses for the first three quarters of
the fiscal year.
The Secretary noted under the
youth committee that Southdowns were
the largest breed at the All-American
show with 257 head shown. It was discussed that a pee-wee class should be
added in the showmanship division.
After discussion, Lee Pettey,
moved to add pee-wee showmanship
for those 8 and under at the National
Junior Show, starting this year.
Seconded by Darrell Howard. Motion
passed.
Brian Forsee, of the National
Show and Stars Sale committee, stated
that Southdowns again had the highest
purse of all breeds in both the open and
junior show at the North American. It
was also discussed the possibility of

recipient ewes selling in the Stars Sale.
Darrell Howard moved to have
the Stars Sale committee look at a policy for selling embryos and report back
at the Louisville meeting. Seconded by
Lee Pettey. Motion passed.
President Kwisnek, noted the
breed standard committee would select
the five rams and five ewes with the
best breed type during the showing for
sale order at the National Sale. The
directors would then be asked to select
the ram and ewe with the best breed
type.
Jeff Repasky stated he would
like to see the Association give a give
of appreciation to the staff at the
Livestock Evaluation Center. The
Secretary would look into appropriate
gifts of thanks.
It was noted that the promotion
committee was looking at the purchase
of two trifolds for use at shows and
sales. Also a breeders’ directory would
be worked on this coming winter to be
distributed at shows and sales.
A copy of the revised constitution and by-laws was then distributed.
After discussion, Don Hopkins moved to
go into executive session. Seconded
by Lee Pettey. Motion passed.
Don Hopkins then moved to go
out of executive session. Seconded by
Darrell Howard. Motion carried.
Darrell Howard then moved to
have the new proposed constitution and
by-laws along with the proxy distributed
to the membership in an appropriate
and timely fashion before the annual
meeting in Louisville. Seconded by
Don Hopkins. Motion passed.
C.J. Robinson noted the 20/20
market lamb committee would be looking at some promotional materials to
emphasis how well Southdown market
lambs had done at major shows.
Gary Kwisnek noted that Suzie
Leib needed recipes if the cookbook
was to be ready in Louisville.
Also the ideal ewe model
would be here for the National Sale with
the number 1 of the limited edition to be
sold at the start of the ewe sale.
Lee Pettey brought up a concern of a breeder from the west cost on
the changing of the ownership of
sheep. After discussion, the breeder
would be contacted by the director from
that region and told of the Association
policy.
There was then discussion on
the possibility of other options for a
computer program for registry work.
President Kwisnek then read a
letter from Frank Sexten on a proposal
for the 2006 National Junior Show to be
held at the Ohio State fair, in conjunction with the 2006 Midwest Regional
Show.
After discussion, Don Hopkins
moved to have the 2006 National Junior
Show at the Ohio State Fair with a second by Jeff Repasky. Motion carried.
Gary Kwisnek read a letter
from Greg Deakin, of Banner Sale
Management requesting regional sales
to be held in Reno and Staunton. Lee
Pettey moved to designate both sales
as regional sales. The second was
given by Patty Abell. Motion passed.
The President then brought up
a letter received concerning the night to
hold the annual meeting. Brian Forsee
moved to have the informal Board
meeting on Monday evening and the
annual meeting on Tuesday evening,
prior to Wednesday’s National Show.
Seconded by Lee Pettey. Motion
passed.
President Kwisnek then read a
letter concerning the upcoming Past
President’s luncheon. It was noted that

the luncheon, plus 10 gift certificates
containing a five pack for codon testing.
Their support was greatly appreciated.
Don Hopkins then called for
executive session, with a second by
Lee Pettey. Motion passed.
Lee Pettey moved to come out
of executive session. A second was
given by Brian Forsee.

on the results of the ram test within the
next 60 days to the Shepherd, Sheep !,
and the Banner. Seconded by Jeff
Repasky. Motion passed.
With no further business to
transact, the motion to adjourn was
given by Lee Pettey and seconded by

Past
President’s were
invited to attend to
be honored for
their dedication of
service, to reminisce about their
days as leader of
the
American
Southdown Breeders’ Association
and to remember and honor those
before them.
ASBA Presidents in attendance were Duron Howard, with wife
Don Ella, Gale Cole, Edwin Schulz,
Don Hopkins, Brian Forsee and current President Gary Kwisnek. Others
in attendance were ASBA Vice
President, Lee Pettey, ASBA
Secretary, Gary Jennings, his wife,

of them for their
years of dedication
to the Association
and
the
Southdown breed.
The
attendees received a
sneak preview of
the
Ideal
Southdown Ewe
sculpture commissioned by the
ASBA. The sculpture was done by
artist Carol Herden
of Iowa and is for
sale by the ASBA.
Everyone agreed
she was, indeed,
the ideal Southdown ewe and that
she looked just like their ewes at
home.
After lunch,
the guests enjoyed
a short walk to the
famous
Nittany

before returning to
the
Livestock
Evaluation Center
for more sale and
show activities.
The luncheon, which started
with a shrimp cocktail and was
capped off with a delicious cobbler
was sponsored by GenMark.
GenMark is the official testing laboratory for the ASBA.
Pictured to the right are all
the past ASBA Presidents from the
last 60 years. Do you know any interesting facts or stories about these
people or the ASBA Assocation? If
so, contact the Journal office.
60 Years of Dedication
The past Presidents were
asked to share their thoughts or memories about their term in office and or
earlier Presidents. Duron Howard
gave a short review or update on all
the Presidents that served before
him. He then recalled the official hiring of Florence Strouse and moving
the ASBA office into her home. Ed
Schulz talked about the slick shear
rule that was enacted during his term
in office. All talked about the strength
of the Southdown breed and the roll
the Association has taken to be a
leader in the breeding sheep industry.
President Gary Kwisnek thanked all

any sheep enthusiasts
are
attracted
to
Southdowns
when
choosing a breed to purchase.
They are often drawn to the
size and practicality of these
sheep while sometimes it’s a
child’s fascination that justifies
the purchase of a Southdown.
Jessica Goblet of Berne, New
York was one of those children.
Jessica first learned
about Southdowns at the New
England Youth Show and Sale
when she was eight. The
Goblet family was no stranger
to raising sheep since Jessica’s
dad, Jim, grew up on the family
farm, Hessian Hill Farm, and
holds fond memories of his
grandmother’s
commercial
flock.

Jessica and her twin
brother, Justin, began showing
market lambs when they
reached 4-H age, and Dorsets
were the primary registered
breed. She was determined to
add Southdowns to their flock
and often shared her desire
with her family at the dinner
table.
Within a year, Jessica
had achieved her goal when
she bought her first Southdown,
a Splendorview ram named
“Chunkie Butt.” Since that first
purchase, the Hessian Hill flock
has grown to 20 breeding ewes,
10 lambs, and 4 rams and has
had tremendous success in the
show ring.
Jessica has been recognized with Supreme Champion
Ram, Supreme Champion Ewe,
and Supreme Flock at the New
York State 4-H Show. And, in
2004, she was named the
Master Sheep Showman.
One of her greatest successes has been at the
Cooperstown Junior Livestock
show, where Hessian Hill sheep
have been Best in Show in
seven out of the past eight
years. Jessica’s accomplishments at this show have helped
