at its Super 60 Luncheon and Recognition Program on Friday, October

Now in its eighteenth year, the
program celebrates the success of the
fastest-growing, privately-owned
businesses in the region which continue to make significant contributions to the strength of the regional
economy.
Companies were nominated in
two categories: total revenue and
revenue growth. Companies eligible
for the program must be independent, privately-owned businesses, be
based in either Hampden or Hamp-

shire counties or be a member of
ACCGS, be in business for at least
three full years and produce revenues
of at least $1 million in the last fiscal
year.
This year’s revenue
winners combined
for almost 710
million dollars in
the past fiscal year
with average revenue for the top 30
exceeding $24 million and 25%
exceeding $30 million. Thirteen (13)
companies are new to the revenue
category this year. Three (3) companies new to the category are also
new to the top-ten revenue winners
list.
In the growth category, the average growth among winners was over
71%. 57% of the top thirty (30)
companies had growth in excess of
50%. Thirteen (13) companies are
new to the growth category this year.

ampden/Wilbraham Chamber members recently had
the opportunity to hear
from Christine Bergquist, Library
Director and Nancy Manard, Assistant Director from the Wilbraham
Public Library. The discussion for
the morning “We Mean Business @
the Library,” highlighted the many
resources available for the small
business owner.
The library maintains a collection
of popular works on business topics,
such as small business practices,
management trends, and customer
service. Cardholders have access to
several specialized business databases
including the Business and Company
Resource Center which contains
company profiles, brand information, rankings, and investment
reports. In addition, the General
Business File ASAP, provides analysis
of company performances and activity, industry events and trends as well
as the latest in management, economics and politics.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Governor Patrick’s Agenda Dominates State House
T
he legislature is back in full
swing, having met in August
and half of September in
informal sessions. While work is still
done in informal sessions, and hearings are held, debate and votes on
major issues usually do not occur.
Major issues do seem to be surfacing, especially from Governor
Patrick’s administration. The Governor has spoken about plans to invest
$1 billion into life sciences, $1 billion into higher education infrastructure, $1 billion in education in general, and to take on the $19 billion
shortfall in needed infrastructure
repairs.
At the same time, he spent the
summer reading reports on legalizing
gaming and at the time of this writing, was expected to release his view
on this subject. The legislature
would have to approve any changes
in the current gaming laws.
The Governor continues to push
what he is calling his Municipal
Partnership Act, which is a complex
piece of legislation that has already
had some parts enacted. The goal of
the act is to allow municipalities
more freedom in how they conduct
their businesses in the hopes of driving costs down on items such as
health care and pensions. Other
parts of the act would allow municipalities to enact their own sales and
rooms taxes. The health care reforms
and pension reforms were enacted
but the local taxes have run into
serious opposition.
The last major issue the Governor
continues to push is what he calls

which businesses have been taxed for
many years and that the term loophole is inappropriate. Once again,
the legislature has resisted embracing
this bill stating that any actions taken that could make Massachusetts
noncompetitive or looked upon as a
state not friendly to business would
have a serious negative effect on jobs
and revenues.
All of this means the legislature
will be very busy in the next two
months. This year they will recess on
the third Wednesday of November
but all bills will carry over into the
New Year. With so many complex
issues before them, it is difficult to
predict what ones will rise to the
top.
Therefore, it is more important
than ever that you, personally, get
involved in the issues your Legislative Steering Committee is working
on. We will be articulating our views
on the “loophole closings” and how
this is the wrong signal to send. We
must be sure that a rate increase for
Unemployment Insurance does NOT
take place as planned on January 1,
2008. A bill to enable paid family
leave is being heard this month and
we must articulate why this is not a
good idea for businesses as it could
increase costs and cause serious
problems in staffing. The best
spokesperson is you as you know
how all of these issues affect your
ability to remain competitive and
grow jobs here.
PLEASE make every effort to
attend our Government Reception
on November 28, 2007. There is no
better forum for having casual yet
meaningful conversations with many
of our elected officials than this
venue. (See article on page 20.)

is the first time a joint event has

Agawam Chamber Golf Tournament a Success

ak Ridge Golf Club
was the setting for
the Agawam Chamber of Commerce 4th
annual 18-hole golf
tournament. With 80 golfers, the
event was declared a great success by
Golf Committee Chairman Dick
Blomstrom of Canary-Blomstrom
Insurance.
Proceeds from the tournament
benefit the Agawam High School
Scholarship Fund. This year the
Agawam Chamber was pleased to
award five seniors from Agawam
$1,000 scholarships to further their
education. This year’s recipients are
Andrew Dawson, who has been
accepted to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and will major
in English and Political Science;
Myungsun Ro, who will attend
Johns Hopkins University and will
be majoring in Biophysics; Ashley
Veilleux, who has been accepted into
the Nursing Program at Elms College; Meaghan Serra, who will enter
the Physicians Assistant Program at
Springfield College; and Caitlyn
Tierney, who will major in Elementary Education at the University of
Tampa. Scholarship recipients
attended the dinner following the
tournament and were introduced by
Alan Rogers, an Agawam Chamber
of Commerce Board member and a
member of the Agawam Chamber
Education Committee.
Six Flags New England was the
tournament’s Presenting Sponsor this
year. The four-person scramble featured a BBQ lunch, sponsored by
United Bank. Hole-in-One Sponsor,
OMG, Inc. put together a prize
package that included $10,000, 2
round trip airline tickets and Warrior golf clubs. Other Hole-in-One
Sponsors were Burack Realty, Hampden Bank, Rocky’s Hardware, and

trace its history back to the Westfield
and Holyoke Railroad of the 1870’s.
The PVRR began operations in the
summer of 1982 and has successfully
operated the line ever since.
Throughout its 25 years of serving
Westfield and Holyoke, the PVRR
has seen a dramatic change in the

Recent Western New England College School of Engineering graduate Melissa Labrie presented her award-winning
design project in Washington, D.C, during the NISH Grassroots Advocacy conference held in June. Labrie finished second in the non-profit agency’s 2007 National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation and Design for her project
“Improved Tape Cutting Process.” Labrie won $5,000 for her efforts and was a special guest at a congressional reception at the Capitol building. Photos submitted by WNEC.
Westfield State College
Westfield State is joining a collaborative effort to help the victims of
Hurricane Dean in Jamaica and central Mexico. As a member of the
Institution Recycling Network, the
college has donated 125 mattresses
to that organization’s hurricane mattress drive. Westfield has also incorporated a food drive for the Westfield Food Pantry.

80 golfers and volunteers to the 15th
Annual Chamber Golf Tournament
held at Elmcrest Country Club.
Proceeds from the tournament
benefit the Chamber Scholarship
Program that includes the Cheryl
Reed Wallace Memorial Student
Scholarships. Each year scholarship
applicants are judged on extracurricular activities, community service
and/or work experience, academic
performance, application essays, and
future plans. East Longmeadow
High School seniors Emily Leighton,
Diane Cuccovia, Luke Bartnik,
Megan Bobianski, Toobah Farooqui,
Chelsea Ferguson, Kurt Bihler and
Maryann Tiago were the 2007 scholarship recipients. Funds from the
program also support the Chamber’s
education and business programs in
both East Longmeadow and Longmeadow.
The golf committee, chaired by
Tammy Bordeaux, branch manager
of Berkshire Bank, worked hard to
ensure a successful event. Others
serving on the committee were Cliff
Bordeaux of NewAlliance Bank and
Greg Pytka from Hasbro.
The committee would like to
thank the area businesses that contributed to the tournament for their
generous support. Special thanks to
lunch sponsor, NewAlliance Bank,
dinner sponsor, PeoplesBank,

Government Officials to Gather at Annual Reception Nov. 28
L
egislative officials from both sides
of the fence will gather for an informal opportunity to meet with
Chamber members at the Affiliated
Chambers of Commerce of Greater
Springfield Inc.’s annual Government Reception on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at the
Carriage House at Storrowton Tavern on the
Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield.
Sponsored by Bay State Gas, Baystate
Health, Comcast, Verizon, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company, the reception is a
traditional highlight of the ACCGS event
schedule and offers the opportunity to meet
local, state and federal key government leaders.
Last year, a great number of our area’s state
senators, state representatives, mayors, and
selectmen attended and we can expect the same
this year.
