Yeshiva of Greater Washington
Since its inception in 1964, the Yeshiva of
Greater Washington (YGW) has been instrumental in the rapid development of Jewish
education in the Greater Washington community. What was once considered unusual
or unnecessary is now recognized as a vital
part in the development of one’s Jewish identity. YGW’s educational philosophy has always stressed commitment to study, character development, personal spiritual growth,
and community involvement. Students are
taught tolerance and respect for parents,
teachers, and fellow human beings. Our
young men and women develop a strong
sense of personal discipline through comprehensive study of the entire corpus of Jewish
classical texts.
prominent positions in varied religious and
secular fields and are active leaders of their
communities.
YGW consists of separate divisions for boys
and girls in grades Grades 7 through 12. In
1995 the Yeshiva Gedolah Division was inaugurated. It offers advanced college-level
Talmudic studies. The Maryland Higher
Education Committee authorized YGW to
award degrees in Talmudic Law beginning
in 1998, and the school gained federal accreditation in 1999. Our graduates occupy
YGW receives its financial support through
tuition, annual subvention by the United
Jewish Federation of Greater Washington,
and the generosity of the community. Faced
with constantly rising costs, YGW is especially grateful to its many supporters who
express their solidarity with our mission by
their continued financial support.
As we celebrate our 50th year, the board of
directors, led by our president, Mr. Louis
Mayberg, has joined Headmaster Rabbi
Yitzchok Merkin in the implementation of
a progressive reassessment and revitalization
of our educational program. The results have
been notable, with renewed energy and enthusiasm across the board at all educational
divisions. Continued attention to facility
development and maintenance enable our
educational programs to find a proper setting as we assess future needs and plan for an
expanded campus in the future.

Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, zt”l
Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer was born in Akron, OH
on March 19, 1932. His parents, Zev and Rivkah
Anemer, were deeply committed Jews who strove
to raise their family in the traditional way of Torah. Mr. Anemer died at a young age, leaving
Gedaliah an orphan at the age of 7. His mother
moved heaven and earth to support her three
children. A major turning point in Rabbi Anemer’s life came when Rabbi Chaim Graineman,
the brother-in-law of the Chazon Ish, came
through Akron raising funds for the fledgling
Torah community in Israel. Impressed by the
young boy’s abilities, he advised Mrs. Anemer
to send her young son to New York so that he could
continue to grow in his Torah study. Rabbi Anemer arrived in New York at the
age of 9, where he attended Yeshiva Tiferes Yerushalayim. He frequented the
home of the yeshiva’s revered leader of the generation, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein
zt”l, growing up together with the Feinstein boys, Reuvein and Dovid, who are
today noted Roshei Yeshiva. A few years later, wanting to be closer to home,
he entered the Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland, Ohio. It was there that he developed his abilities under the tutelage
of Rabbi Elya Meir Bloch and Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Katz, great
scholars who had escaped the
Holocaust and re-established the
Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland. Rabbi
Anemer had a lifelong connection
to Telshe, and considered Rabbi
Bloch to be his rebbe muvhak, his
foremost mentor and guide.
Rabbi Anemer moved to Washington to become the Rabbi of what is now YISE in 1957.
He was by then an elite scholar and acknowledged as an expert in all areas of Shas and
Shulchan Aruch. Indeed Rabbi Mordechai
Gifter, the legendary Telshe Rosh HaYeshiva
who followed Rabbi Bloch and Rabbi Katz,
declared later in life that Rabbi Anemer was
the finest talmid that the Telshe
Yeshiva produced in America.
The community he joined in the
District was composed of scientists, doctors, and other highly
educated people, who sought a
rabbi with the intellectual capacity and dynamism to motivate,
guide, and build a community
that could grow and prosper.
With changing demographics in
“old Washington,” Rabbi Anemer had the foresight to relocate the congregation
to Silver Spring and the seeds of what was to become the Silver Spring Jewish
community as we now know it were thus planted.
Rabbi Anemer was a dynamic orator and a master educator, who
spiritually and intellectually guided the lives of many people with
his sermons and shiurim in all of
Tanach, Gemora, and Halacha. His
sage advice was often sought allowing him to forge deep relationcontinued on the next page
ships with many people throughout the Greater
Washington community. Despite his erudition,
he was able to relate to everyone. A common
refrain among the many who knew him in their
youth, from all walks of life, is the enormous
warmth, friendship, and love that he showered
on them. In addition to his duties as rabbi, he
also oversaw many aspects of the community’s
religious functions such as Kashrus, Gittin,
and the Eruv, and was recognized worldwide
for his expertise
in these areas.
In 1963 he founded the Yeshiva High School
of Greater Washington, then consisting of a high
school with separate divisions for boys and girls.
Inspired by his vision, the congregants of his shul
and other local lay and rabbinic leaders served as
a base for the huge effort needed to get the school
going. Rabbi Anemer, often accompanied by Rabbi
Avrom Landesman, a Yeshiva supporter and longtime noted activist for Torah
causes throughout the area, would literally ‘recruit’ each student one by one as
the fledgling institution sought to get off the ground. In 1966, Rabbi Anemer
was appointed Rosh HaYeshiva by the Vaad HaRabbonim of Greater Washington, a position he held until the end of his life. He taught a daily advanced shiur
in Gemara at the Boys High School, training
students at all levels with patience and great
insight. Students would prepare for days in
advance of their ‘turn’ to read the Gemara
in shiur, not wanting to disappoint Rabbi
Anemer in any way. Rabbi Anemer likewise
taught many classes at the Girls Division,
with a special focus on halacha. The classes at the Girls Division were held on a very
high level, and talmidos from classes decades apart remember the intensity and
clarity of his teaching. He thus molded
the lives of thousands over many decades with great devotion and dedication to Klal Yisroel, to the community
and congregants at YISE, and most
especially to his beloved talmidim and
talmidos. May this tzadik’s memory be
forever blessed.
Mrs. Sima Jacoby
Akeres HaBayis Award
Sima Twersky Jacoby was born in Washington, DC to a family steeped in Chassidus and
service to the Jewish community. Her formative years were spent in Boston, and she is a
proud graduate of Maimonides High School.
Mrs. Jacoby earned her B.A. from Brandeis
University, where she majored in political
science.
Returning to Washington in 1967 with her
husband and a growing family, she was eager
to contribute to the development of Yiddishkeit in Silver Spring. She began
teaching in the Yeshiva High School Girls’ Division just a few years later and
quickly assumed additional administrative responsibilities. After earning her
M.A. in Educational Administration from American University, Mrs. Jacoby
began to serve as Principal of the Girls’ Division, while continuing to teach
on a daily basis. Her broad educational background has enabled her to be
a leader of the school’s secular studies program. Accomplishments include
increasing the number of courses for which our students can earn college
credits, helping the staff to innovate in many areas (including adopting new
technology), and encouraging students and teachers to maximize their potential. Mrs. Jacoby knows that details are crucial to the success of programs and
has worked tirelessly to keep the school running smoothly.
Mrs. Jacoby’s deep concern for every individual has helped her to successfully
mentor many teachers and to develop close bonds of mutual respect with secular and Limudei Kodesh staff. Hand in hand with her educational leadership,
Mrs. Jacoby has developed close personal
relationships with many students, providing insightful guidance in all matters, from
selecting courses and colleges to choosing
careers and husbands, becoming a part of
their lives as she welcomed them into her
life. One of the crowning achievements of
Mrs. Jacoby’s tenure has been her development over many decades of her
legendary Jewish Lifecycle course, taught at the senior level, which enables
young women to understand the scope of mitzvos that they will be involved
in over a lifetime, and to view their role with simcha. Her connection with
her students continues well beyond their years at the Yeshiva.
Mrs. Jacoby’s husband, Danny, has been active in the Yeshiva since they
arrived in Silver Spring; all their children, as well as two sons-in-law, attended the Yeshiva. In addition to her devotion to her immediate family,
Mrs. Jacoby showers her love and concern
on her extended family – all the students
and staff at the Yeshiva of Greater Washington. She truly merits the appellation “Akeres
Habayis” of her family, the Yeshiva, and the
Greater Washington community, and looks
forward to continue teaching and guiding at the Yeshiva on a part-time basis for
many years to come.
The naming
Naming the Yeshiva of Greater Washington
for Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, zt”l
As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary Banquet of
the Yeshiva of Greater Washington, the Hanahala
and Board of Directors are pleased to announce
the naming of the institution for our founder,
Moreinu v’Rabbeinu HaRav Gedaliah Anemer,
zt”l. Naming the Yeshiva after Rabbi Anemer is
both an expression of hakaras hatov and an affirmation that the vision and the legacy of the Rosh
HaYeshiva continue as our foundation and guide
as we move into the future.
‫תפארת גדליה‬
YGW
Originally established as the Yeshiva High School
of Greater Washington [YHS] in 1964, the school
– with separate divisions for girls and boys from
its inception – grew to contain grades 10-12. The name changed to the Yeshiva
of Greater Washington [YGW] with the addition of the junior high schools for
each division in 1980.
With the addition of the Yeshiva Gedolah and Kollel in 1995, the vision that
Rabbi Anemer shared with the community leaders of the early 1960’s, to provide
a Torah-true yeshiva education for the Greater Washington community reached
its fullest maturity. He continued to nurture this vision with the help and leadership of a devoted staff, dedicated lay leaders and strong community support.
The Officers, Board of Directors, and staff of the Yeshiva of Greater
Washington take great pride in announcing the Yeshiva’s new name will be
the Yeshiva of Greater Washington — Tiferes Gedaliah in memory of Moreinu
v’Rabbeinu HaRav Gedaliah Anemer, zt”l.

Who is the recipient of tonight’s Akeres HaBayis award? She is a
woman who embodies the Pesukim of Aishes Chayil, who can worry
about everyone and everything at all times. Who can impact, lead,
and inspire so many for so long, who can present to her students a
living example of balancing a life of being a Bas Yisroel with Yiras
Shomayim as her foundation, and to juggle being a wife, mother,
and professional. It is given to a woman who can go from being a
principal who gives to and guides young women, to one who humbly
shares her wisdom and collaborates as an equal participant with those
young women turned colleagues. It is given to a woman who earns
the respect and love of her staff, deeply cares about their welfare
and devotes herself to them completely. (This even includes being
their “Shadchan.”) I have had the privilege of working closely as a
partner with Mrs. Jacoby educating the future of Klal Yisroel. I have
learned so much from her on so many levels that I can truly say to our
Talmidos Didi V’Didchen Didah – all that we have achieved is hers.
May HKB”H reward her and Mr. Jacoby with continued Nachas
for all that she did on behalf of His children. As a parent of three
daughters who benefitted from her lessons, guidance and friendship
we are gratified that a woman of your caliber and Chashivus was, is,
and always will be a role model for them.

Hundreds of students from so many years,
Are part of this tribute, with their smiles and their tears.
And they say, and it’s true, that Mrs. Jacoby cared,
And that you made them knowledgeable, sensitive, well prepared.
That you set standards high, but then you held their hand,
And were there when they stumbled, and things didn’t work out as planned.
And that you inspired them with your humble and regal ways,
And that your love of Hashem and His Torah direct your days.
And they say, and it’s true, that your lessons were bursting
With knowledge and deep thought, and that they left them thirsting.
And they say that excellence was always your goal,
However that looked, for each person as a whole.
And they say that long after they left the building behind,
They knew they were always still on your mind.
And they say that you are often on their minds too,
And so their hakaras hatov runs deep and profound and true.
And if this is what all of your students will say,
Just think how we, your children, feel every day.
All of what they say is true, so luckily no one kept score,
Since we always got all of the same, and so much more.
No student can imagine what children and family know,
How care, support, inspiration, involvement, and love always flow.
So you may retire from Yeshiva amidst praise and thanks - aplenty,
But you can’t retire as Ema, till one hundred and twenty.

Dear Sima,
Our daughter Melissa (Elisheva) was blessed with a unique class
of young women during her six years at Yeshiva High School. Young,
intelligent, fun loving women with a strong work ethic and exemplary
Middos. These students were able to reach their full potential in large
part due to your educational and administrative strengths. We were, and
continue to be, truly grateful.
Dear Yocheved and family,
We moved to Kemp Mill when we were in our early 20’s with a 16 month
old baby, Yale. The first Shomrai Emunah minyan in Kemp Mill was held
in our family room. Rabbi Anemer became a powerful influence in our
lives from day one. He helped in our development as parents, community
members and community builders. Each of our six children blossomed
under his wing at the Yeshiva High School. They, in turn, are passing on
Rabbi Anemer’s input and influence to their own children. Words cannot
fully express our deeply felt Hakaras Hatov.

In memory of our beloved Rebbe and Rav, Harav Anemer, zt”l.
From our youth, Rav Anemer was the ideal image of an Adam Gadol. Through his
mere presence, Rav Anemer taught us and so many of our contemporaries what it
meant to devote oneself to Torah, and what such devotion could produce. We were
direct beneficiaries of his beloved institution, the Yeshiva of Greater Washington.
We learned much Torah. We were also exposed to tremendous personalities that
helped inspire us to devote ourselves more and more to Avodas Hashem. We both
had the Zechus of being Rav Anemer’s students in our high school years. This
made a remarkable impression. We both had the Zechus to teach in his Yeshiva.
Rav Anemer may not have been involved in many day-to-day aspects of the
administration, but his impact on us and our colleagues was always felt. Any staff
member who was not sure where the Yeshiva stood on the centrality of Torah and
Avodas HaShem merely had to attend the staff luncheon before the school year
began or the graduation at the end of the year. Through Rav Anemer’s words and
his presence of personality, the priorities of the institution were clearly set. Later,
I had the remarkable opportunity to work closely with Rav Anemer in Rabbanus,
day in and day out. I cannot hope to enumerate the lessons I learned over those
years. Suffice it to say that, over three years after his passing, not a day goes by
that my Rabbanus is not informed by his lessons. Many times when people work
as an adult with people they idolized as children they become disappointed. Our
image of our Rav only grew the more time we spent with him. We tell our oldest
child of how Rav Anemer would stroke his cheek; we named our next child after
him. His picture hangs in our dining room, and we hope, as the years go by, to
tell our children many stories about him, so that they may have the opportunity
to grow up with such a special image of what it is to be an Adam Gadol. We
humbly thank Rebbetzin Anemer, Shetichyeh, for her significant role in all of
these accomplishments, and so many others. We wish the entire Mishpacha much
Chizuk and Nechama from all their parents have accomplished.
Yehi Zichro Baruch.

Rabbi Anemer, zt”l was a true visionary in predicting, even at
the “TYRB” of the Yeshiva that, H-YHY LWDG IUQH HZ (the high school
will grow to include a Yeshiva Gedolah and Kollel). It is not by
accident that this institution went from obscurity to national
and even international recognition. The Yeshiva was conceived
and implemented by Rav Gedaliah whose very name implies the
continued growth of Kiddush Hashem - HQ LWDG. The renaming
of the Yeshiva in his honor is merely returning the DWBK that
he extended to our community as our BR and HBY$YH $AR to its
rightful heir. Our warmest and heartfelt wishes to
Rebbitzen Anemer and family.
Simmy’s name is virtually synonymous with the education and
spiritual development of the girls of our community. She is
not just responsible for furthering the growth of those already
committed to a Torah way of life but also has been a powerful
and dynamic force in inspiring young women with little or
no background to embrace the teachings of our Torah and
raise generations of ever higher levels of observance. Akeres
HaBayis is a truly appropriate term for Simmy because without
her leadership the RQYE is RPSH IM RSX – the essence of the
school will be missing. Thank you Simmy for your friendship,
understanding and guidance through the years. We have always
looked to you as a role model as we watched you and Danny
bring up exceptional children, stellar grandchildren and surely
even greater great-grandchildren.

Dear Mrs. Jacoby,
When I heard from Chana Biberfeld that you were retiring I am not
sure what thoughts first entered my mind. How will the school ever replace
you? While I never had you as a teacher or principal, working under someone
such as yourself was a privilege and an honor. You were and continue to be a
role model not only to myself, but to all the students who passed through the
Yeshiva of Greater Washington, as well as the staff.
You always radiated curiosity and a love of learning that never ceased
to amaze me. You were well versed in all subjects, and you were able to
contribute to conversations about anything, from molecular biology, chemistry,
English syntax, any period of history, and so much more. You had a thirst to
continue to improve, which affected the teachers. The fact that after years and
years of teaching you still read articles and looked for advice in how to be an
excellent teacher was always inspiring. It was far from uncommon for me to
have an article printed in my box about new ideas on teaching chemistry, or
biological problems in modern medicine etc. It was this that showed that you
cared about learning, and were excited by it, which, as teachers, is so important
for us to model.
You fought for what was right, whether it was for specific needs of
students, the needs of the teachers, or advocating for parents. Even if it was
not easy, and you knew it would be a fight, you were willing to take a stand if
you felt it was correct and the proper thing to do. As well, you were humble,
and willing to admit when you made a mistake and do your best to rectify it.
This is truly the sign of a great person. You worked hard to negotiate all of the
various needs of the students, parents and teachers with grace, understanding
and love. You made sure to show mercy and compassion with students when
necessary and to take a tough stand when it was required, and you did it
with love, modeling Hashem in this world. The student as a whole was your
concern, not just their academic growth, but also their spiritual and emotional
development.
I thank you for being such an amazing role model for myself, the staff,
and all the girls who through your guidance have and will continue to grow to
be Bnos Yisroel and bring the light of Torah to their own families.

remember Davening in the temporary Shomrai Emunah Shul - Rabbi & Mrs.
Anemer’s basement. Finally, the University Blvd. and Arcola Shul buildings were
constructed. Then, thanks to Rabbi Anemer’s conviction and deep foresight, the
Yeshiva was founded. I remember, as a young Yeshiva Bachur, feeling so proud
that I could now boast that my hometown also had a Yeshiva. Throughout the
years Rabbi & Mrs. Anemer have inspired me deeply and even today I go often
to his Kever on Har Hamenuches for solace. May you all go LYX LE LYXM and be

Dear Mrs. Jacoby,
Mazel Tov on this well deserved honor.
We have fond memories of our years
together in Yeshiva high school!
Ottie Anemer Kahana and
Chaya Anemer Weber
Rabbi Anemer, zt”l, played a central role in
building our Jewish community. I worked with
him on the Mikvah, for the Yeshiva, and consulted
with him on the Chevra Kadisha. But, when I
reflect on his legacy, I feel a personal debt of
gratitude for his kindness to me when I was
in mourning for my parents. He answered my
questions promptly and tried to make it as easy
as possible. May his memory be a blessing for his
family and all of us, Linda Rishe
L’iluy Nishmat Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, zt”l
who had a vision and followed his dream.
Dear Simmy,
You have worked heroically throughout the years and
our children and grandchildren are the beneficiaries of
your dedication. May HaShem grant you and Danny
many happy and healthy years together so that you can
enjoy this new stage in your lives.

Rabbi Anemer has been an integral part of the Ginsburg family from when
my parents moved to Silver Spring in 1962, until the end of his life. In 1962
my grandparents were very concerned about my parents moving to Silver
Spring which had no Orthodox Shul at that time. Rabbi Anemer reassured
my grandparents that the Shul would be built, and Silver Spring would
someday have a thriving Orthodox community. In our house when my
father referred to the “Rabbi,” we all knew that he meant Rabbi Anemer. My
siblings and I grew up in Young Israel Shomrai Emunah where we learned to
Daven, and how important a Shul is to a community. Later we attended the
Yeshiva High School where Rabbi Anemer was both our Rosh Yeshiva and
Rebbe. He taught us both through his Shiurim and by his own example what
it means to be a Ben or Bas Torah. May his memory be for a blessing.

In honor of Mrs. Jacoby ‘YXT$ - You held us to the highest standards, so we knew that you
believed we could achieve greatness. You pushed us to do our best in every area of life, but
greatness was not defined by academic achievement or by intellectual heights, certainly not
by SAT scores. At times when we degraded ourselves by our choices, you turned a mirror
on us and challenged us to confront our true worth: VDWBK YPL AL HZ. To be taught by you
is to be inspired by you. Your classes were poetry and prose at once. (The lesson did not
need to be officially $DWQ YDWMYL; I clearly remember a Hebrew language class that became
a forum for life lessons.) You speak the loftiest of ideals in the most down-to-earth and
attainable language, IZWAL OYEM$NH OYRBD. You took our ideas and our questions with the
utmost seriousness, whether in 7th grade Chumash or in 12th grade Jewish Life Cycle. You
respected our intellectual struggle and you channeled it toward spiritual growth. Seeing the
humility you demonstrated in your own relationship with Torah and its scholars, could not
help but impact us. Watching you as an administrator is a daily RSWM lesson in TWZYRZ, HWNE
and TWYRXA. “If I don’t do it, who will?” So you did it. And you kept doing so many things
(many nowhere in your job description) day after day, year after year, decade after decade.
But perhaps most inspiring is to see how you live your own life. Together with your BW$X
husband, you exude TWERW OWL$ ,HWXAW HBHA. Together you made HRWT and RWBYC YKRC the
focus, not HSNRP and TWYM$G. May we all be HKWZ to many years of continued inspiration from
you. May you gain much TXN from your family and all those you have impacted.
