You’re Our Hero

LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
T H
A N
Every face you see and every name you read in this Annual Report
represents our many heroes across the state. You are our volunteers,
community partners, donors and, most importantly, those we serve.
Working alongside heroes like you allows us to reach out to those in need,
and their loved ones, to ensure they have a place to call home. With your
support, we can connect them with services in the community to guide
them onto their path to recovery, and renew their hope for a better life.
I wish we could tell all of your heroic stories, but the three stories
you are about to read represent how your heroism changes and
saves the lives of those we serve.

On the streets of downtown Tulsa,
Evan turned to drugs and alcohol to
cope with his untreated depression
and anxiety. But the drugs never
gave the 24-year-old lasting relief.
Instead, they ravaged his mind and
body for the two years he spent
living on friends’ couches, on the
streets or in shelters.
After being referred by his case
manager, Evan moved into our
Walker Hall. The transitional living
home is where we offer formerly
homeless young people impacted
by mental illness a safe place to live,
but also the support and services
they need.
“The day I moved in,” Evan said, “I

decided I was going to take the

“As good as I’m doing today,
it’s still easy for me to fall back

CHARLOTTE EARNED A JOB
AND A NEW LIFE
THE THING I LOVED MOST ABOUT THE PROGRAM
IS THAT YOU’RE NOT EXPECTED TO BE PERFECT –
DIFFERENCES ARE EMBRACED AND CREATIVITY
IS ENCOURAGED.
Twenty years ago, Charlotte was charged with a felony and served her time
in prison. But her punishment continued every time a job application asked,
“Have you ever been convicted of a felony?”
Over and over, Charlotte’s honesty about her past often kept her
locked out of the work force, and deepened her depression. But while
volunteering to help women exiting the criminal justice system, Charlotte
learned about our six-month Workforce Readiness Program.
E D
For people like Charlotte, many of whom are impacted by mental illness,
homelessness, addiction and have criminal backgrounds, our program
teaches them essential job skills. Many of our graduates go on to
successful jobs in the community. As for Charlotte, she went on to earn
a job as one of our key office managers.
“The thing I loved most about the program is that you’re not expected
to be perfect – differences are embraced and creativity is encouraged,”
Charlotte said. “Accountability is expected and recovery is celebrated.
OKLAHOMANS IMPACTED BY MENTAL ILLNESS, HOMELESSNESS, ADDICTION AND THOSE
I thank God for this program because I know there are lots of others just
WITH CRIMINAL BACKGROUNDS OFTEN FACE BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT. OUR SIX-MONTH
like me, who are willing and capable of being loyal, productive employees –
WORKFORCE READINESS PROGRAM PREPARES THEM FOR JOBS IN THE COMMUNITY.
WITHIN OUR OFFICE AND KITCHEN SETTINGS, WE TEACH PARTICIPANTS CRITICAL
EMPLOYMENT SKILLS, LIKE TIMELINESS, PHYSICAL APPEARANCE AND APPROPRIATE
INTERACTION WITH CUSTOMERS AND CO-WORKERS.
they just need to be given another chance.”

As a medical school professor, Dr. Richard Wansley helps his students
RICHARD FIGHTS FOR
M E N TA L H E A LT H R E F O R M
understand the importance of not only treating the symptoms of a
mental illness, but to identify the root causes of the illness, which can
reach crisis levels without direct intervention.
As one of our most dedicated mental health advocates, Richard has
taken a similar crusade to the state’s Capitol. Together with advocates

like you, Richard persuades lawmakers to go beyond short-term fixes
in order to reform our oftentimes broken mental health system.
In our continued advocacy efforts at the Capitol, Richard has dealt with
plenty of frustration over the years, but what keeps him going is knowing
that he’s not alone. The Association has advocates like you ready at a
moment’s notice to write legislators, rally at the Capitol and even meet
with lawmakers one-on-one to put a face to a critical piece of legislation.
“When we tell a legislator a story, you can see their whole demeanor
change,” Richard said. “They are able to think past the stats and dollar
signs and start thinking about their family, friends and neighbors. That’s
when they start telling their own stories about how a piece of legislation
can change the lives of those they represent and care about. Once that
connection is made, then, and only then, can you get down to the
business of policy making.”
IN 2014 OUR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS, LIKE RICHARD, FOCUSED ON FOUR MAJOR POLICY PRIORITIES TO MEET CRITICAL NEEDS IN
OUR STATE. THESE PRIORITIES INCLUDED EXPANDING ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE, INCREASING THE AVAILABILITY OF
AFFORDABLE HOUSING, DECREASING CYCLICAL HOSPITALIZATIONS, AND PROTECTING CORE FUNDING FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE.
TOGETHER WE DEVELOPED CREATIVE, MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL STRATEGIES FOR ENSURING ACCESS TO A FULL ARRAY OF QUALITY,
INTEGRATED, COMMUNITY-BASED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR OKLAHOMANS IN NEED.
