event recap july 18-20 2013, at comic-con® | Omni Hotel terrace | San Diego, CALIFORNIA @ COMIC-CON ® July 18-20, 2013, WIRED hosted the 5th annual WIRED Café @ Comic-Con. Throughout the three days over 3,000 guests received invitation-only access to WIRED’s full-service Café. The event featured a WIRED gadget lab, charging station, cuisine, cocktails, and a host of activities and demos from WIRED partners. Some of this year’s key partners included HBO, History, and Kia Motors. Super celebs like Hugh Jackman, Aaron Eckhart, Joe Manganiello, Kit Harington, and Rachel Bilson all stopped by to enjoy the food, drinks, and goings-on. Fittingly, the WIRED.com video crew, along with Access Hollywood, CNN, E! Guests watched as renowned LA street artist Gregory Siff transformed six 3-D printed models of the Kia Cadenza into bold, custom pieces of art. A tasting of Ommegang “Take the Black Stout” and “Iron Throne Blonde Ale” beer made everyone feel as though they had been transported to the world of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Guests were also invited to experience Game of Thrones wherever they may find themselves with HBO Go. 1 B/ 1 / An interactive display allowed Café-goers to learn all about the Nokia Lumia 928. 2 / No mobile device was left uncharged with the super convenient Seidio charging station. 3 / Guests were invited to get into character with AVI-SPL where a caricaturist instantly transformed them into their superhero alter ego. 4 / Celestron allowed attendees to check out the convention from the safety of the Café with their selection of telescopes. 1a 2 3 1b 4a 4b 1 / Cheribundi provided signature cocktails and tasty samples at the main bar as well as their own activation space. 2 / No one went hungry with samples of Justin’s Nut Butter in assorted flavors throughout the Café. 3 / Guests hit up the gadget lab to play Hitcents’ games such as Draw a Stickman and Harlem Shake. 4 / Attendees played paparazzi by testing out the Olloclip—a quick-connect lens solution for your iPhone. 5 / The weight-sensing electronic Zboard skateboard made for great fun in the gadget lab. 6 / Lasting impressions were made on mobile devices throughout the Café with engraving by Epilog Laser. 7 / Café-goers had their faces scanned in a touchscreen photo booth and watched while Cubify 3D used its Star Trek 3DMe app to print them into a 3D Trekkie figurine. 1 3 2 4 5 7 6 after dark History’s Vikings partnered with WIRED to completely transform the Café into an authentic Nordic forest inviting partygoers and cast members alike to eat, drink, and be merry. Constructed by the pros at Legacy Effects and the Stan Winston School, Mech was the ultimate cos-play attraction generating over 111 million media impressions! “WIRED and Legacy Effects produced a suit that blows away everything I’ve ever seen.” Nerd Reactor Weight 400 pounds “WIRED Mech has become a celebrity at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego.” Yahoo!
