Board of Directors, Locations 16 Inside back cover DEAR FRIENDS, This was a busy and exciting year at Howard Brown. We expanded our programs, increased our staff, and strengthened our collaborations with our partners to continue our mission in service to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community as well as in the surrounding communities of Chicago. Our goal has never been clearer: to be the region’s leading provider of comprehensive medical care, behavioral health services, social support, education, and cutting-edge research for LGBT and underserved individuals and their families. Our success in this past year proves that we are reaching our goal. We strengthened our organization. We took a fresh look at our organizational structure and realigned our staff to focus on service delivery and efficiency. In addition, we expanded our funding base to reconnect with past donors and to engage new supporters whose commitment makes our work possible. This community support gave Howard Brown our best financial performance in eight years, resulting in a significant year-end surplus that will allow us to serve more people and to provide more services. We delivered quality services to the community. At our three service locations – our main facility on Sheridan Road, the TRIAD Health Practice, and the Broadway Youth Center (BYC) – we delivered medical and behavioral health services to almost 9,000 clients through more than 23,000 encounters. The majority of these clients – 61% – are uninsured or underinsured. Just as we do throughout the year for many low-income and uninsured persons, Howard Brown provided free HIV counseling and testing to the public on several occasions: World AIDS Day, National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and during LGBT Health Week. Our services stand out for many reasons: we remain the largest community-based provider of HIV care in Chicago; we diagnose and treat more syphilis cases than any other private Chicago provider; and, we serve as the doorway to no-cost healthcare and support for hundreds of LGBT, homeless, and runaway youth in our city. We formed collaborations to expand our array of services. This year we partnered with the Chicago “Our most important achievements aren’t reflected in awards or ceremonies... With little support at the time when she began her transition, Ebonii was fortunate enough to have a school counselor who recommended that she come to Howard Brown. Skeptical at first, Ebonii, now 24, felt that she would be the only person of color at Howard Brown and would be treated differently because of her situation. But the reality was quite different. “It only took a moment,” she says, “to realize that I was incorrect. Everyone was warm and made me feel comfortable. Especially Dr. Barrett. He is a really strong influence on me. He made me understand that I could be me…he made me feel comfortable in my own shell.” She and Dr. Barrett have been together for seven years, and she hopes to remain his client until well past her reassignment surgery which she plans to have by the age of 30. Today, Ebonii has joined the Howard Brown team as a staff member at the Broadway Youth Center. She loves working there and credits the youth services staff with making her feel welcome. “I didn’t think they would want to hire someone like me; I had doubts that they would want a transgender person on staff. But thankfully, I was wrong.” Ebonii hopes to have a long career at Howard Brown. Our physicians 5 Raised in Zion, Illinois, Joe (pictured here with Paula Sanchez, Program Manager, HIV/AIDS Case Management) had been on his own since he was 16. He had to fend for himself for many years, and when he was diagnosed with HIV at age 21 had no place to turn for support. Joe, now 43, first came to Howard Brown in 1994 when he became very sick due to shingles in his inner ear. “Howard Brown embraced me with no judgment, only asking what they could do for me,” says Joe. “I don’t feel like a charity case – they make me feel like a human being.” His case manager made sure that he got to his therapy appointments on time, and he considers his case manager “a godsend.” Unfortunately, the inner ear infection led to permanent partial facial paralysis, which has inhibited his ability to work full time. Howard Brown’s case management program has helped him with funding for rent, food coupons, emergency utility help, and vouchers from the Brown Elephant Resale Shops for some basic household needs. Not much stops Joe from trying to live each moment to the fullest; he applied and was recently accepted to the International Academy of Design in Chicago. “My goal is to get off disability,” says Joe. “I would not be alive today if it weren’t for Howard Brown. They’ve given me the courage to do my part in my care and to never give up.” Joe’s eyes filled with tears when he saw this photo. “This picture gave me my smile back, and I felt whole and complete and not deformed or broken. It reminded me of the Joe I used to be.” B E H AV I O R A L H E A LT H S E R V I C E S Behavioral Health Services, together with our medical team, impacted individuals and their families. The young man was found naked and murdered in one of Chicago’s north side neighborhoods. The killer – someone that the young man had met on a chat line – was apprehended after a few months. This incident struck a chord with Herek. “Here was a young man trying to exercise his homosexuality…he died for that because he did not have a safe place to be a gay black man,” says Herek, who grew up in Florida in a supportive family. He felt that he needed to do something to help those who were perhaps not as fortunate as he had been. He turned to the mentor program at the Broadway Youth Center (BYC) as a way to give back. “There is a lack of support in the gay, black community,” says Herek. “Howard Brown and the BYC give young people a place to go to be themselves.” Herek has been matched with a 17-year-old youth in the BYC’s Mentor Program. “The Mentor Program made a great match,” he says with pride in his voice. “J. is an extremely intelligent young man who has a difficult family situation. We have so many things in common, including music. He has a fantastic voice, and we exchange music and explore new artists. I’m helping him to set goals with his academics, and he wants to be an attorney. I hope I can help him achieve that.” YOUTH SERVICES AND THE B R O A D WAY Y O U T H C E N T E R This has been an exciting year of growth for our youth one-to-one relationships that encourage the development of services program. Christina was there for me,” she says with true affection. “She’s such a positive person…I know it’s her job, but I took it personally.” And how is she now? “I’m feeling great!” she says with her characteristic laugh. “I try to call Christina two times a month now…I used to call her more often, but I know she has other clients and don’t want to bug her!” She now posts flyers in her building about Howard Brown services and research studies. “I hope I can help someone else the way that Christina helped me.” C O M M U N I T Y I N I T I AT I V E S This year, we created a new department, Community counseling and benefits management to LGBT and vulnerable Initiatives, to address new areas of growth for Howard Brown seniors. HIV positive since 1978, Bruce, 54, has been coming to Howard Brown since it was a storefront STD clinic on Halsted Street. In 1983, Bruce became aware of a new research study being conducted at Howard Brown: the Multi-center AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). The MACS study is the largest epidemiological study in the world on sexual practices and how they relate to the transmission of HIV, and continues at Howard Brown today. Bruce comes to Howard Brown for a battery of tests twice a year, and feels that as a long-time survivor, it is important to remain involved in the MACS study for the overall benefit of HIV research. He’s also forged quite a bond with Marilyn. “She’s like a second mother to me,” says Bruce with true affection in his voice. “She is always there to tell me about new treatments, and really advocates for services at Howard Brown.” Bruce also accesses Howard Brown for his primary care. “It’s wonderful that Howard Brown has grown from a group of volunteers on Halsted to what it is today. This is absolutely the best healthcare that is available.” RESEARCH Howard Brown has a long tradition of participating in nationally screened for colorectal cancer; an intervention to reduce HIV funded research initiatives. During the 1970's, Howard Brown risk for youth; an Internet-based intervention to motivate men gained national prominence through its involvement in a to practice safer sex; and an education plus patient navigation research study that led to the development of the Hepatitis B intervention to motivate women to get screened for breast vaccine.
