SYMPHONY SUNDAY

BUCKHANNON — A
car without a driver rolled
backward down a hill, striking a moving vehicle and
then a billboard at the corner
of Preston Street Monday
afternoon.
The wreck occurred
after Scott Thrain, owner of
Hillside Autobody Repair,
had parked a 1994 Volvo
on a hill in the driveway
leading up to the repair
shop, according to the report
from the Buckhannon Police
Department.
Thrain told investigating
officer Chief Matt Gregory
that he placed the vehicle
in park, set the emergency
brake and took the keys with
him. Sometime afterward,
the vehicle rolled backward
down the hill and into the
lanes of traffic of South
Kanawha Street.
The Volvo then struck
the left rear of a Ford F350
pick-up truck driven by
Rodney Harrison, of Horner,
before hitting the billboard
on a building at the corner of
Preston Street and Route 20.
Horner reported a possible injury but was not
taken by Upshur County
EMS to the hospital. Both
vehicles were driven from
the scene.
No citations were issued.

CHARLESTON — Fireworks lit up the sky above the West Virginia state capitol as the annual
Symphony Sunday came to an explosive conclusion this week. The free event is held on the University of Charleston campus and features a variety of musicians from around the state before the
West Virginia Symphony Orchestra takes the stage and the Overture of 1812 signals the grand finale.
BUCKHANNON — Professional team Sauced!
BBQ is coming to town.
The team, which hails from Charlotte, N.C., brought
home this month a reserve grand champion title at the
15th annual Hog Happenin’ in Lincolnton, N.C. —
along with a first-place trophy for brisket. They also
received third place for chicken and 11th for pork.
But in less than two weeks they’ll have their sights
set on Buckhannon to bring home the bacon — a
grand champion title and a trip to the big BBQ dance.
“‘The Jack,’ as it is called, is the pinnacle of barbecue for teams,” according to teammate Scott Adams,
referencing the Jack Daniel’s World Championship
Invitational Barbecue. “It’s definitely a bucket list
item for barbecue teams and we’re hoping to check
the item off this year.”
The winner of the Almost Heaven BBQ Bash
automatically qualifies, so “there’s no need to wait
for the drawing and cross our fingers,” Adams said
with a chuckle.
Sauced! BBQ competed in eight states last year and
covered 10,000 miles to reach 28 contests. They’ve
competed in five states and 10 events this year.
“West Virginia will be a new state for us,” he said.
“We are looking forward to seeing what the judges
think of our food.”
Adams first started with a small, inexpensive
smoker, simply to try his hand at barbecue, but “after

BUCKHANNON — Fidler’s
Mill will be open Saturday for an
open house from noon to 4 p.m.
The historic mill property in
Arlington will be open for tours
beginning at noon. Live music
will be featured from 1 to 3 p.m.
and there will be demonstrations
of soap making and spinning
beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Members of the Southern
Upshur Business Association
recently held a clean-up day to
ready the mill for the summer
season.
“We had a great turnout for
the clean-up day,” SUBA vice
president JoAnn Hawkins said.
Outside, weeds and vines were
trimmed while inside was swept
out and dusted after a winter of
non-use.
Fidler’s Mill was named for
William Fidler in 1847 when he
purchased the mill from Daniel
Peck and rebuilt it. Fidler operated the mill until he died and
son William Martin Fidler then
owned the mill until his death
in 1905. The mill was sold to
E.G. Wilson, who then sold it to

Fidler’s Mill during a recent Southern Upshur Business meeting.
Hudson Fidler. Hudson Fidler
and his four sons owned the mill
until 1979 when it was sold to
Grafton Coal.
The Upshur County Commission gave the mill to Southern
Upshur Business Association and
a separate organization, Friends
of Fidler’s Mill, was organized
to care for the mill.
Plans were made to have the
mill become operational again
and members even attended trainings on how to use the equipment.
However, over the years those
interested members have died or
moved away and there are fewer
people left to maintain the mill,
according to Hawkins.
It has been mentioned about
turning the mill back over to
the county commission, but at
