Since this is a leap year, we have one extra day to work toward creating a better Sphinx Shrine! I would appeal to you all to make a serious effort to pull together. What we do all year as Nobles needs to build membership and keep Sphinx moving forward on a positive path. We started with one small fund‐raiser on Chief Rabban's Night. We will need others. I appeal to the entire Nobility to come forth with your ideas and your input for our consideration. We will strive to look at everything that can work ‐ and with your enthusiasm, we can put those ideas into posi‐
tive action! We are addressing the challenges of our physical Shrine Center. The contract for the new roof has been signed and work will begin this Spring. Other new projects are in the talking and planning stages. Samuel A Frink The best action we can have from you is your continued participation in our 2008 Sphinx Events. Well‐attended functions result in overall team spirit Sphinx Potentate 2008 and forward momentum ! Reserve early and see you there! Installation Night was a great evening, with the ceremony at the Scottish Rite building being very inspiring. The dinner, dancing and camaraderie shared by all at the Shrine Center were awesome. WE ARE FAMILY! Throughout the year, I urge you to continue checking the calendar, Booster, Website and email newsletter for updates on all our events. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your faith in me. I hope we can build on the recent momentum we've shared and keep it going into the foreseeable future. Fraternally yours, Samuel A. Frink Sphinx Potentate, 2008 Potentate Sam Frink, with Imperial Potentate Bernard Lemieux 3 MEET YOUR POTE! Samuel A. bles of this great philanthropy enjoy the fun of belonging but also receive great satisfaction in knowing that we are helping those children who suffer either orthopedic or burn problems. As a member of the Sphinx Shrine for over 25 years, as a member of several Shrine Clubs, and as a Past Potentate, I encourage you get involved in order to get that special feeling that you are making a difference in a child’s life. As one of my last official duties, as the outgoing Secretary of the Caravan Shrine Club, I want to officially welcome, on behalf of my fellow officers and members, two new mem‐
bers of the club: Noble Joseph C. Miller, Sr., from Waterbury, and Noble Edward Schike, from Middletown. Both attended our last meeting in November 2007 at An‐
gelico’s Lakehouse Restaurant, in East Hampton. Noble Joe is a member of the Sphinx Shrine Funster Unit and a member of the Kaaban’s Shrine Club. Noble Ed was a former member of the Caravan Shrine Club and had just returned to the area and wanted to rejoin the club. The Caravan Club met at Angelico’s Restaurant, in New Britain, for our January meeting. Newly elected Potentate Samuel A. Frink, accompanied by his Chief Rabban Richard Cassada, Oriental Guide Raymond Basley, and 2nd Ceremo‐

CHAPLAIN’S
CORNER
Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day...While they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bot‐
tom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse became aware of Edna's heroic act, she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital as she now considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news, she said, "Edna, I have good news and bad news." The good news is you're being dis‐
charged since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love. I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry.... but he's dead." Edna replied... "He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. Now how soon can I go home?" “THE DUCK AND THE
DEVIL”
There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. He was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He prac‐
ticed in the woods, but he could never hit the target. Get‐
ting a little discouraged, he headed back for dinner. As he was walking back he saw Grandma's pet duck. Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was shocked and grieved! In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile; only to see his sister watching! Sally had seen it all, but she didn't say anything at all to anyone. After lunch the next day Grandma said, "Sally, let's wash the dishes" But Sally said, "Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen." Then she whispered to him, "Remember the duck?" So Johnny did the dishes. Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fish‐
ing and Grandma said, "I'm sorry but I need Sally to help make supper." Sally just smiled and said, "Well that's all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help" She whispered again, "Remember the duck?" So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help. “THOUGHTS FOR THIS DAY AND
EVERY DAY THERE AFTER”
Whatever is in your past, whatever you have done... And the devil keeps throwing it up in your face (lying, cheating, debt, fear, bad habits, hatred, anger, bitterness, etc.)...whatever it is, you need to know that God was standing at the window and He saw the whole thing. He has seen your whole life. He wants you to know that He loves you and that you are forgiven. He's just wondering how long you will let the other guy make a slave of you. Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. Sometimes knowing your rights, thinking someone else is to blame or that you are just a victim, is all you have, but remem‐
ber WHO IS STANDING AT THE WINDOW SEEING ALL. After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally's; he finally couldn't stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, "Sweetheart, I know. You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you." Ladye Kaabans Donation At the Ladye Kaabans meeting on Sunday, 1/13 they were recognized for making a $500.00 do‐
nation to the Shriners Hospital in Springfield and received this plaque. Pictured (left) is Patti Puglisi, Past President and Roberta Layton, Past Treasurer. (photo Grace Peterson) 9 IMPERIAL SESSION ‐ SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Shriners, family and friends will gather in St. Louis – known as the Gateway to the West – for the 134th Imperial Council Session June 29‐July 3. “The presence of the St. Louis Shriners Hospital and support from Moolah Shriners make this location an excellent choice,” said Imperial Potentate Bernard J. Lemieux, M.D. “And there are many attractions and great things to do in this city.” While in town, you can catch exciting baseball action with Major League Baseball’s 2006 World Series Champions, the St. Louis Cardinals, be amazed by the view – 630 feet above the Mississippi River – at the top of the Gateway Arch, or visit the Missouri Botanical Garden, widely considered one of the top‐three botanical gardens in the world. “Since the last Session was held here in 1997, St. Louis has received awards for its renaissance and revitalization,” said Director General Barry Todd. “It is a wonderful destination for families. There are world‐class attractions, such as our St. Louis Zoo – amazingly, it’s free – museums, casinos, Six Flags theme park, a Shriners Hospital and many other interesting things to do and visit.” In addition to the St. Louis Zoo, there are several other free attractions in “the Lou,” including the Saint Louis Science Center, Missouri History Museum and the St. Louis Art Mu‐
seum, which houses paintings by Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Picasso. And of course, the area offers plenty of quality shop‐
ping and dining options. TENTATIVE SCHEDULE FRIDAY, JUNE 27 •

11 Remembering Helen Coe Lemieux First Lady Helen Coe Lemieux, the wife of Bernard J. Lemieux, M.D., the Imperial Potentate of Shriners of North America, passed away Tues‐
day, Jan. 1, after battling cancer for many years. She leaves a long legacy of dedication to Shriners of North America and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Mrs. Lemieux, the oldest of four chil‐
dren, was born in Mishawaka, Ind., and raised on a beef farm. Her father was a Notre Dame gradu‐
ate who majored in accounting and maintained both a private accounting practice and a farm business. Mrs. Lemieux graduated from Purdue University in Indiana with a Bachelor of Science in home economics and a Master of Sci‐
ence in textile and food research. She taught home economics in public schools in Indiana and Ohio, ultimately joining the faculty of Bowling Green State University. She began night school at the University of Toledo Law School during her final year at Bowling Green State University. She resided in Perrysburg, Ohio, and practiced law for approximately 35 years; her areas of specialty were family law and probate. Mrs. Lemieux owned and operated a wire service floral shop in Maumee, Ohio, for seven years. Her educational background and the flower shop were foundations for the major role she played in supporting Dr. Lemieux during his tenure as Potentate of Zenobia Shriners, planning the activities leading up to Impe‐
rial Sir Lemieux’s election to the Imperial Divan and developing educational seminars for the Shriners of North America. Imperial Sir Lemieux and Mrs. Lemieux’s son, Bernard J. Lemieux Jr., who resides in Scottsdale, Ariz. became a Shriner in 2007. Over the years, Mrs. Lemieux demonstrated her dedication to Zenobia Shriners and Shriners of North America through a vari‐
ety of programs, events and projects. Her fundraising program, “Research – Straight to the Heart,” provides scholarships for a summer internship program for medical students at Shriners Hospitals for Children. The scholarship program, with an empha‐
sis on research, will increase medical students’ awareness of the important work being done at Shriners Hospitals and, ideally, entice them to become part of the team. Another of Mrs. Lemieux’s recent achievements was leading the development of a children’s book, “Granny Uncovers Miracles at Shriners Hospitals for Children,” to support the first research scholarship program for the hospitals. Donors receive a copy of the children’s book for each contribution of $25. The Shriners organization is truly grateful for Mrs. Lemieux’s extraordinary commitment and many years of dedicated service. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and her Shriners family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to sup‐
port “Research – Straight to the Heart.” Memorial donations can be sent to Shriners International Headquarters, Donor Relations Department, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631, with a notation that it is to support the First Lady’s Program in honor of Helen Lemieux, or made by phone at 1‐800‐241‐GIFT (1‐800‐241‐
4438). We highly recommend that our new clowns go there for at least their first three years, as they are taught numerous items relating to clowning ‐ make‐up techniques, balloon sculp‐
tures, parading, how to interact with special care children and adults and most importantly, proper clown conduct. Parade season is just around the corner. We start off our parade season, in March, with the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Hartford, followed by the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Meriden. In April, we follow those up with the Daffodil parade in Meriden and in May, the Shad Derby Parade in Windsor, the Memorial Day Parades in Newington, Portland and East Hartford. Sphinx Ladies Night Dinner Dance Sponsored by: Directors Staff November 8th Shuttle Meadow Country Club. Dance to "After All" SAVE THE DATE! 13 Profile in Success ‐ Being a "Shriners Kid" 60 Years Later…. extended periods of time some of them were staying, it gave her the motivation to want to get up out of her wheelchair and leave as soon as possible! She was afraid she might end up being one of the long term kids who were there for multiple opera‐
tions! To this day, Laureen has fond memories of her Shrine Hospital experience. Even remembering back to such a young age, in her Laureen Macklin, age 67 heart, she knew it felt like a spe‐
Former "Shriners Kid" cial place. When hearing of the At age 8 young "Shrine Kids" we met in Anaheim in 2007 like Garrett Bur‐
gess or little Leigh Dittman, her eyes fill up with an emotional understanding and knowing compassion of their circumstances. As Shriners, we need not look to just the young patients as our motivation. Looking into the grateful eyes of an adult like Laureen Macklin 60 years after her stay in a Shriners' Hospital, also effectively tells the story of how important Shriners Hospi‐
tals can be and how important our work as Shriners continues to be in the future. It is all about success stories like Laureen! B.F. There's over 835,000 of them that have been helped over the last 85 years. You never know where you'll run into one. This past Summer, Marge Fairclough, the wife of this Editor, was out drumming up contributions for the upcoming Arabian Shrine Club walk‐a‐thon. As she sat in her chair at her local hair salon, the owner of the salon heard of her request for dona‐
tions and enthusiastically proclaimed she would be happy to contribute! Why? Because she was, herself, once a "Shriners Kid" from the Springfield Hospital! Laureen Mackin, now age 67, is the owner of "The Cutaway" hair salon in Newington. At age 8, she was living in a foster home in Palmer, Mass and remembers sitting in her bathroom during a time when some house renovations were going on. One of the old‐style heavy cast‐iron radiators was leaning against the wall disconnected. Next thing she remembers it came crashing down across both her feet and she was rushed to the local hospital. Shortly thereafter, she was transferred to the Shriners Hospital in Springfield where she was treated for crushed bones in both feet. Laureen remembers being placed in double casts on both her feet and receiving specialized treatment in Springfield for the crushed bones she endured. While it was almost 60 years ago, she distinctly remembers the cheery atmosphere in the hospi‐
tal. The sun porch where all the children congregated to play and pass the time was the best place of all. She clearly remem‐
bers how warm and friendly the staff was with the kids and how the kids all seemed to help each other out and give each other strength. Unlike many of the kids who were there for extended periods of time, Laureen knew her stay was relatively short compared to the kids that were "really sick." When she found out the Nobles... Do YOU know of a similar success story with an adult who once had treatment as a "Shriners' Kid"? Please contact your Editor and let us know. We are looking to share more such success stories on a regular basis! To see complete photo albums of ALL Sphinx Shrine events! Click on "photos" at: www.sphinxshrine.org •

A nearly full bus of Sphinx Nobles, ladies and friends made the final trip of 2007 down to Washington DC. It was a whirlwind 3 days that started early on Friday, Dec. 7th and had the travelers back to Sphinx Shrine late Sun‐
day evening. The Hotel Washington was the venue, which was directly across the street from the White House Christmas tree, which had been lit just that Thursday. Friday evening's dinner was at the Orleans House in Arlington, followed by a moving night time visit to the WWII memorial under the lights. Saturday was a full day of sightseeing, and included Arlington National Cemetery, a stop across from Lafayette Park in front of the White House, lunch at Union Station, a visit to the reflecting pool at the Mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial, and a tour of the George Washington Masonic Museum in Alexandria. As was so often the case, many new friend‐
ships were created on this trip and it was a perfect way to wrap up all the fun that was enjoyed throughout the year in 2007. For complete photos of the trip, go to our photo galleries on the web from the Sphinx Shrine Website. 16 Transportation Units ‐ The Shrine's "Quiet Workhorse" While everyone sees the fine work of the Shrine Hospitals as the most visible sign of what Shriners do for our "kids," not as many people know of the quiet "army" of Transportation Units from most every Shrine Center that does work that is just as important ‐ getting the patients to and from their treatments. While many parents choose to get their children to and from the hospitals, many cannot afford to do so. When this hap‐
pens, the Shrine Transportation Unit steps in to lend a helping hand. Except for one patient who travels to our Philadelphia Hospital, all of our patients through Sphinx Shrine go to either Springfield or Boston. We use 2 Hospital Vans. A 2002 Ford E150 and a 2003 Ford Windstar. All trips are made in the vans ‐ no personal cars are allowed to be used. Fourteen Nobles shared the driving ex‐
perience, with 7 doing 95% of the trips. Each trip has a ride‐a‐
long adult that goes with the driver. These ride‐a‐long’s are No‐
bles, Masons, family or friends. It is not required they be Nobles. In 2007 we went to the Springfield Shriners’ Hospital 114 times, to the Boston Burns Unit 27 times and to the Bay State Medical Center 2 times. That breaks down to 80% Springfield, 19% Bos‐
ton, and 1% Bay State Medical Center for a total of approxi‐
mately 17,600 miles. We transport patients to Bay State Medi‐
cal Center when the Springfield Hospital makes appointments for patients at that facility. The Massachusetts General Hospital is connected to the Shriners Burns Hospital by a tunnel and when patients have appointments there we take them to Shriners and they go via the tunnel. There are 2 funds used for the Hos‐
pital Transportation ‐ the Hospital Transportation Fund and the Van Replacement Fund. Sphinx is cur‐
rently in the process of replacing one of our vans. The Springfield Hospital has two floors. The out‐patient facilities are on the first floor, as is the cafete‐
ria. The second floor has the in‐
patient facilities. The Shriners Lounge is on the basement level. The Boston Hospital has 9 floors. The out‐patient facilities are on the 6th floor and the in‐patient facilities on the 7th and 8th floors. The cafeteria is on the 9th floor and offers views of the Boston area. The Shriners Lounge is on the 3rd floor. These drivers lounges become important "sanctuaries" for the drivers to rest while the patients receive their treatments. While the distances to Springfield and Boston are close for us here in CT, some drivers from northern New England and travel almost an entire day and are often called upon to stay overnight before returning their patients home. Our own Sphinx Transportation Unit is headed up by Noble Alan Cunningham and Assistant Director, Everett Spencer. Noble Cunningham handles the bulk of the "dispatching" and the duties of coordinating the drivers and patients. He plans on stepping down in this role at the end of 2008 and hopes to stay on "simply as a driver." Anyone interested in this extremely rewarding position, should contact Noble Cunningham. Leadership by Example: Noble Alan Cunningham Whether it be in his church, his community, his home lodge, one of the appendant Masonic bodies or at Sphinx Shrine, Noble Alan Cunningham has quietly gone about giving of his time and energy to help make our corner of the world a little better and lighten the load of his fellow man. Noble/Brother Alan was active in his blue lodge as an officer and later went on to be a District Deputy in District 5. He has been active in the Scottish and York Rites, and most recently, has served as the Director of the Sphinx Transportation Unit. No, being a Hospital Driver its not the most flashy job we have, but according to Noble Al, possibly one of the most rewarding. So if you see someone quietly off in a corner somewhere do‐
ing some important work to help out, chances are, you'll find Noble Alan Cunningham. It is this quiet dedication to Masonry that recently had Alan presented with the Pierpont Edwards Medal in Bronze for Dis‐
tinguished Masonic Service. We at the Shrine know all about Noble Al's quiet dedication and want to congratulate him on a job well done! 17 Give $100 and FEEL LIKE A MILLION! Join the Shrine’s 100‐MILLION‐DOLLAR CLUB! I want to become a member of the 100‐Million Dollar Club: I have added a provision in my will leaving a bequest to the Hospitals I prefer to make a tax‐deductible contribution at this time of at least $100.
