Hill View Farms is a small family business and we we pride ourselves on prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable
customer service. If you have any questions or concerns about your order or a product please feel free to call. Any
member of our staff can assist you. If you prefer to communicate via email, please do. Our mission is to provide
only the very best products, all of which have been thoroughly field-tested and we welcome any input. Catabooks: Call or email if you would like a one for yourself or a friend. Order: by phone, mail, email, or fax. In
order to avoid mistakes, your invoice may be emailed to you for confirmation before shipping. This is especially
true if you email your order instead of using the forms provided. Payments Accepted: VISA, Master Card,
Discover, check, cashier check, money order or wire . A 2% discount for cash and check payments is available ask when ordering. Returns: Items for return or exchange must be in new and unused condition, with their original
packaging. A re-stocking fee or refusal of return may occur if these requirements are not met. Some items may be
offered to repair rather than exchange – based on mfg., recommendations. Any item returned beyond 30 days will
not be accepted. Any items returned in a “used” condition will not be accepted. For all custom orders there is no
return unless it was found to be a mistake made by Hill View Farms ®. Once a return is received in house a credit
will be issued within 48 hours or on the next business day. All returns are to be sent to our SHIP TO address. Returns
not sent to this address will take 10 days longer to process. All returns must be made within 30 days of purchase and
must be accompanied by the receipt or a copy of. Shipping charges are non-refundable. It’s recommended to use
an insured and trackable shipping company (UPS, FEDEX or USPS Insured). Purchases paid by check must be
refunded by check. Credit card purchases must be refunded to the same credit card used for payment. If you are
unable to provide a copy of the CC #, the credit will be applied toward future purchases. We are not able to look
up accounts other than yours to determine purchase history. Sales are FINAL and non-refundable on clearance and
deep discounted products items so please make sure you have the right size & color. Shipping: Will be by UPS
ground and US post, allow up to 5 business days for delivery. If you would like us to ship your order by other means,
just call we will make those arrangements. Special and Custom Orders: If we do not have the exact item that
you need, we may be able to order it for you. If it is not an item that we normally stock, we will require an advance
deposit. Otherwise, you will not be charged for any item until it is being shipped. Many of the products are made
exclusively for Hill View Farms which maybe customized for little to no charge. For other custom orders, there will
be no returns unless item is found to be defective or a mistake by hill view farms. Pricing: All prices and
availability are subject to change without notice. Sizing Information: We know how hard it can be to figure out
sizing not only for your own clothing, but also for the wide variety of clothing and equipment for your horse. That
is why our staff is available to help you. We have customers all over the world and so have devised creative ways
for measuring all kinds of things “from a distance”. Saddle and Strap Goods Repair and Custom Work: We
are happy to offer repair services for your saddles and strap goods. Please give us a call regarding these services.
Saddle Trials: We understand how hard it can be to find the right saddle for you and your horse. Accordingly, we
do allow a trial period and provide written guidelines for you to follow to help you care for the saddles while they
are in your possession. Before we ship a saddle to you, we ask that you call us. We have knowledgeable and qualified
staff members available to answer any fitting questions that you might have. You have 30 days after receiving the
saddle to “trial” and check the fit. Please remember the saddle must be protected during riding and be kept in the
condition it was shipped to you in case you need to return or exchange it. Payment for the price of the saddle,
shipping and sales tax (if applicable) are required before shipment. Do, wrap your leathers in plastic or a tube sock,
Don’t wear your tall boots or chaps-they might mark the saddle, Always use a pad to prevent sweat marks and do
not oil or clean the saddle unless you plan to buy it. Saddle Orders: To order you must call in so that your order
can be customized for you and your horse. Orders placed require a 50% deposit. Once the saddle is completed
payment in full is required within 30 days or your deposit returned, less any custom charges. Lay-a-way: Will
require 25% down with the balance due prior to shipment. A 10% charge will be assessed on lay-a-way orders
canceled or returned within the time period for money back. 50% will be assessed on custom ordered items. Laya-way items must be paid for within one year, if not it will become the property of hill view farms and monies paid
will be returned less the assessment. Out of Stock /Back Orders: Items will be ordered and shipped when
received from the vendor. We’ll keep in touch with you to let you know the status of your order. Gift
Certificates: For the hard to shop we offer gift certificates available in any denomination. Gift certificates are
valid for one year after the purchase date. Privacy and Security: We collect customer information through our
web site and retail store. We use this information to process orders, enhance your shopping experience, and
communicate with you about our products, services, and promotions. Please be assured that we will not sell any
customer information to outside parties under any circumstances. Bad Check/Credit policy: If we receive a bad
check or are told “the check is in the mail” when it isn’t, bad credit card or someone has product not paid for, the
person’s name, city and state will be listed on the web site until the debt is paid. Product Warrantees: If one is
provided , extend to the manufacturer only. Hill View Farms ® sells retail and is NOT liable for any defective or
warrantee product made by any manufacturer other than the HVF brand that Hill View Farms ® manufacture
themselves. All warrantees from any manufacturer are limited to the original purchase price of the product and to
the original purchaser who must have a copy of the original receipt for the item in question. Wholesale: Hill View

HILL VIEW FARMS ® LLC is devoted to putting the Horse First and providing the best service possible.
As they are a family business, they have wonderful prices because of low overhead. They are also able to
give customers the individual service that is so important.
Cathy Sheets Tauer has been involved with horses since 1965 and the Tauer family has been riding
Delrin system saddles since 1994. In 1996 they decided to share their knowledge and experiences with
others by providing products that they themselves use and have thoroughly tested for at least one year.
Cathy has a B.S. degree with honors in Animal Science (1982), ESMT Certification (Equine Sports
Massage Therapy) from Equissage™, is a member of both the International Association of Equine
Massage Sports Therapists and the Minnesota Horse Council. She worked in corporate sales and
marketing for over a decade, and has ridden and trained horses all of her life. Cathy was schooled abroad
and at home in hunt seat, equitation, dressage, western, and English pleasure, and saddle-seat style of
riding; she has gamed and along with her family, has participated in endurance and competitive riding. Don
and Cathy Tauer have raised three girls and over a dozen horses out on the trail. Cathy spends nearly
every weekend from April through November on the trail and during this season she can be found riding
and camping with friends and family, logging in anywhere from 20 to 100 miles of horseback riding each
week/weekend. The family has owned, ridden, trained and bred both gaited and non-gaited horses and
have loved each and every one of their “babies” as if they were family.
This passion, along with Cathy’s quest for perfection, has led to the development of countless products
specifically designed for the horse and rider. To date there is no one person who comes close to the miles
ridden using the various types of panel system saddles or who has sold and fit as many panel saddles as
Cathy. Who else better to know what does and does not work? Because of this wealth of experience, Hill

so it will attach to any saddle. Two zippered pouches on each side 8 x 4

5.5 x 4.5) with tie straps to tie on the whole pack and are

Skijoring is a great wintertime sport - way COOL.
B ITS
How do you adjust and fit a bit correctly? The width of a bit should allow a finger width on either side of
the horse’s lips. The height of the bit in the mouth should be where the bit will make a wrinkle in the corner
of the horse’s mouth. The bit should have a cavesson/flash (to hold the mouth shut, thus engaging the bit)
or a chin/lip strap. The chin/lip strap should be adjusted so that you can slip one or two fingers between it
and the horse’s chin groove. Always undo this strap when removing the bit from the horse’s mouth to avoid
banging the bit against the horse’s teeth causing him to rear or pull back. When testing new bits always have
your old one handy and test new bits in a controlled area. To engage a horse’s mouth (get him on the bit)
gather up the reins slowly in your hands while the horse is standing still. Walk your hands up the reins until
the horse takes one step back/raises head/or collects. This is the point where you are on the horse’s mouth
communicating with him. Remember to check your horse's teeth yearly.

This

hackamore is often referred to as
an English hackamore, but it can
go western just as easily. The
hackamore is broken down into
three parts. First, the incredible
lightweight polished aluminum cheek pieces weight only 3 oz each.
They are 7 inches in over all length with 4-inch shanks. The noseband
is made of “Beta “ a wonderful and easy to maintain product. It is
adjustable up to two inches and you can also adjust the removable
Velcro nose cushion to shape your noseband perfectly. Lastly this
Hack comes with a stainless steel chin strap and end hooks. This is the

Dog measurements: in addition to length, measure
the circumference of largest part of the dogs chest
and state the breed of dog.
Proper fit and sizing: when fitting be careful NOT to over-snug the bellybands. There should be enough
room to put a fist between the bellyband and belly (When a horse lays down his belly will expand causing
stress on the seams). When determining size to order, measure the horse from the center of the chest to the
center of the tail, that number will be the size to order. Other options are; Aadjustable shoulder tabs and
open fronts each at an additional $4.00.
Washing and Care: Close all Velcro straps before machine washing in cold water and hang to dry.
Spraying sheets with any silicone or camp-dry spray will help repel water, stains and shavings.

BREAST
COLLARS
Leather English or Western Breast collar: Give your mount a softtouch with a soft-sided breast collar. These breast collars begin with an
inner core of nylon webbing that makes this collar strong enough to pull
a car. The core is padded with soft neoprene foam, which gives the
breast collar soft cushioned edges that can’t cut into your horse. The
bottom of the breast collar then is covered with supple moistureresistant garment leather that can’t become sweat-soaked, so this breast
collar needs only a fraction of the maintenance required by other fine
tack. The top of this breast
collar is covered with top
quality
grain
leather.
Because of its construction
this breast collar doesn’t
cause the friction and galling
when your horse gets
sweaty and wet. A strap
that goes over the neck is standard to help maintain the position,
which classifies this as a Pulling Breast Collar as shown in the
photos. This allows your horse maximum freedom of movement.
This breast collar goes English or western. Many western riders
order the English because it’s super strong, yet very conservative in
overall appearance. The English collar is 1" wide, soft and pliable,
tough and carefree. The arms on the small are 18 inches and 21
inches on the large. The western is 2" wide and can be tooled. The
arms are 16 inches on
the small and 19 inches on the large. Stainless steel snaps are
provided at all ends for quick attachment to the saddle and the
girth dees. Available in small or large size. The small will go up
to a medium and the large down to a medium. State leather color.

Rhea on Rhya and the proper
placement of the breast
To properly fit the breast collar. Adjust the breast collar so it
can pulled it away from the horse’s shoulder on one side 3-4"
inches. This allows the animal's shoulder to move freely
forward. Use the neck tug (the strap that goes over the horse's
withers) to adjust the height of the "arms" that lay along the
shoulder slope, offering a comfortable fit and maximum support.
These arms come together in the center of the chest and are
connected to a center strap that connects the breast collar to the
to the dee on the girth, between the horse's front legs. This center
strap will keep the breast collar from moving up, and choking the
horse and will allow your horse to eat and drink comfortably.
Correctly fit this strap should hang down no more than 1 to 2

Contoured Leather Girth: Give your mount a soft touch
with this soft-sided girth. These girths have no stretch
and are premolded to a curve to fit around the horse; the
girth is shaped wide at the sternum underneath (6.5
inches) and narrow at the horse’s elbows (2 3/8th inch).
Excellent on round-barreled or mutton-withered horses
due to this feature of fitting like “little saddles” under the
horse, holding a saddle more securely than any other girth.
The contour behind the elbow is excellent for those
horses that have a narrow girth area, a large tricep muscle
or those that have tremendous extension, especially
performance horses. Even “cinchy” horses love this girth. These girths are complicated to make, but
they’re worth the extra effort. First, leather skirting is backed with nylon webbing and wet-molded to
a curve. Next, neoprene wet-suit foam is placed behind the webbing and folded over the edges of the

How do I know what size girth or cinch to purchase? You might need two girths sizes, depending upon
how fat your horse gets in the off season and how much he shapes-up during riding. On western saddles,
you should never be more than 6 inches away from the D ring on either side of the saddle and no closer than
one inch. On English saddles your girth should be half way up the billets on either side. On both saddles,
towards the end of and the beginning of the riding season, when your horse is either putting on weight or
is fat from his time off, you will be on the outer edges of your billets or distance from the D ring. The
opposite is true when your horse is in peak form, upper half of billets and closer to the D ring.

Picket Line Tightener: This “tight rope” is the
ONLY way to tighten up your sagging picket/high
line. It is so easy and yet ingenious (we were the
inventor’s inspiration for this gizmo, after he saw us
struggling with our self-tightening knots). You may
think about making one yourself but for the price offered… forget it. Just order one, you will never be
sorry. How to use: Put your rope up and make it as tight as you can by hand. Then position the two
knobs of the tightener so that the rope runs between them. Then firmly hold the tightener and begin to
walk -twisting the tightener so that the rope twists around the knobs of the tightener. When very tight,

with your hand by the copper crimp in front of the line
and about 2" above it. 2) With your other hand take the
bottom of the “horse positioner” and bring it up behind
the picket line and through its self and over . 3) Repeat step 2 two more times. 4) Pull
the loop down and straighten the rope so that copper clip is flat in front and the coils
of rope are not over each other. 5) To test, side “the horse positioner” side-to-side
with your hand on the rope coils (not the bottom loop), next pull side ways with the bottom loop and it
will lock each way. 6) Note, if the loop is too long, repeat step 2.
Picket Line Rope: At last here is the picket or “high line” rope you are looking for. This top quality poly
rope has a soft broken in feel, with very little stretch. This rope comes only in red for easy visibility. (Our

the saddle in place when going downhill. If you do not use a crupper when going
downhill, your saddle may run into your mount’s rotating shoulder and the girth
may run into his elbow /arm pit area-with the potential of galling and soring him

helps stabilize a load more than any crupper, and is also nicer to the
animal. Some horses and mules do not like a crupper, or they put up their

Shown right. As a trainer, I use many different bits depending upon the horse, their
mouth, and the head set I wish to achieve. I start with a hackmore followed by a training

HORSE C AMPING
Why use a picket/high line? We put over 1,000 miles on our horses every year and have seen lots of
things and will continue to see things as life allows. The one thing that I’m convinced of is the use of a
picket line, or as some call it, a “high line.” Allow me to share with you the problems that I have
personally seen or experienced over the years with other restraint systems.
The portable corral: A great way to allow your horse to move and not tie up; but horses roll, play, jump,
squeal and kick. I’ve seen horses trapped under the portable gate panels; I’ve seen legs stuck, and shoes
pulled off. Some horses when stuck lie calmly and allow you to help them; most will struggle and injure
themselves.
Trailer tying: This allows for the horse no movement, increasing your risk of tying up. Knowing this,
people leave their lead ropes long, increasing the risk of major injury. I’ve seen horses tangled so tightly
in their leads from trying to scratch, lie down or rubbing that only a knife could cut the rope. The quick
release snap if used, usually is on the horses’s halter not the trailer (have you ever tried to get close to a
thrashing horse’s head to release him? It won’t happen). I’ve seen horses lie down and get stuck under the
trailer. The horses legs looked like raw hamburger when he was freed; sometimes the soft tissue damage
is so severe that your horse is out for the season. If trailer tying is your only option, tie the horse short
so he can’t get his head below his knees. Note: after a 24 hour period horses must have the option to lie
down to avoid internal distress.
The portable electric fence: This is super for allowing your horse to move and catch a bite to eat if on
grass, but as I said before, horses will be horses. I’ve seen horses play in the morning and run right through
the fence. Some horses get chased through the fence by their best buddy trying to reinforce the pecking
order. These horses try to stop but slide through the fence, only to get tangled, panicked and end up free
to run. Depending on the terrain, sometimes the posts can’t be set securely enough into the ground and
topple over in the slightest breeze. Also, horses try to eat that last piece of grass from under the fence
(portable corrals too) and get themselves into trouble. The worst accident I witnessed was at an endurance
ride in the fall when the horses were blanketed. For some reason the horses got out (maybe they did not
feel the shock of the fence through their blankets) and ended up on the freeway. One was killed instantly
when it went through the windshield of a car (the people were okay). The other was horribly injured. I
knew the girls and the horses. I cried. Granted, nothing is entirely safe, but we all do our best.
The Picket/high Line: The horses can move, walk, trot (small circle) and lie down. They can kick and
rear and even scratch themselves with a rear foot. The only two issues that I have had over the years (and
I picket 5 or 6 head each time we hit the trail) are that, a horse may catch his foot in the lead rope, or halter.
To free the horse, all you do it drop the line or quick release the lead rope or cross tie. You will just have
to use sheer strength to release a foot from a halter, and make sure the halter is not loose next time!!! The
worst injury one of my horses ever got was a slight rope burn on the rear pastern (horse was ridable, not
lame). The ROPE picket line has give and bounce, which prevents a solid, cutting, horse-laming pull. The
only other incident was when we left a young horse behind in camp; she reared and her front feet went
into the line. The line gave, she could move around, it felt to her like a girth or lead rope, and all we did was
release the lead rope when we returned. The horse was unharmed because the line gave. I have seen cables
used at some parks as picket lines. I do not like them because they do not give. If you use them be careful
and ALWAYS use a quick release at the top, away from the horse, so you can free him if necessary.
How to set your lead rope on your line? Adjust your line with your picket fasteners, spacing them far
enough (about 12 + feet) apart so that your horse can’t tangle with others. Also, when tying a horse on
a lead long enough so he can lie down, you need to make sure your lead is 8 feet away from your vehicle,
trailer, and trees. Then tighten the line with your “tight rope,” and hang your leads so they hang no closer
than 8 to 12 inches from the ground. The horse can then get his head to the ground, without any
interference from the lead. After you hang your hay bags you may need to retighten your line if your rope
has a tendency to stretch. We have also added D loops to the top of our trailer so we can use our trailer
as a picket post. Our friends have done the same, so we have a picket line city when we camp. All in-all,
we have found the picket line our best choice, even though we have had a couple of incidents.

(Written at the request of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in 2002 for their use in developing
horse parks) What are the various methods of securing a horse: There is a debate regarding the best ways
to secure an equine that has come to my attention. Therefore, I will share the various methods that I have
encountered over the years. We ride our horses over 1,000 miles every year and have seen lots of things and will
continue to see and do new things as life allows. Where we have been) What follows are the good and bad things
I’ve seen or experienced over the years in the ways campers secure their horses. To get started, we need to look
at the three areas:
The horse camper.
The horse and its safety.
The Park or Equine Camp and its financial and legal obligations.
The Horse Camper:
1) Horse campers and their horse trailers:
Horse trailers can be bumper-pull style towed by a pick-up truck, SUV, van, RV, bus or even a utility truck.
Horse trailers can be gooseneck or 5th wheel style towed by a pick-up truck or a semi tractor.
Horse trailers can accommodate anywhere from one to eight horses, and be up to 60 feet long including tow
vehicle. The park or campground has to plan for these various rigs, which are getting to be larger and larger.
2) Horse campers themselves:
Horse campers come by themselves or more often with families and friends. You may see several vehicles at one
campsite and even several trailers if the family is large and needs more than one trailer to haul all the horses. The
park or campground has to accommodate all these variations.
Horse campers have different sleeping arrangements. Some sleep in their horse trailers, some in tents or RV’s,
or in a combination of these. What they all have in common is that they like level camping spots.
The Horse and it’s Safety: The horse owners must be able to see or hear their horses from their rigs so in case
of an emergency, they can quickly get to their animals and lend assistance. This is an absolute must regardless
of type of restraint.
1) Using portable corrals:
This allows the horse to move around and not tie up (cramping of the heavy muscles in the back and hind
quarters, a medical condition that can lead to colic, which is an intestinal disorder that, if not properly treated,
can lead to death).
On the other hand, horses roll, play, jump, squeal and kick. I have seen horses trapped under the portable gate
panels. I’ve seen legs stuck, and shoes pulled off. When trapped, some horses lie calm and allow you to help
them, but most will struggle and injure themselves.
Horse campers using this method bring and set up their own corral. But not every camper has the means to do
this. The park or campground has no expense associated portable corrals.
Because this corral is portable, the wear and tear on the campground’s "lawn" will be widely distributed and not
confined to one spot. This is pleasant for the next camper, but the campground has to provide more room to
accommodate these corrals.
2) Tying to the Trailer:
This method allows minimal movement by the horse, thus increasing his risk of tying up or colicking, especially
after a hard day on the trail if he isn’t as fit as he should be.
People try to compensate for the horse’s lack of mobility by leaving lead ropes long, furthering the risk of major
injury. I’ve seen horses tangled in their leads from scratching themselves, lying down or rubbing, with the rope
pulled so tight that the only way to free the horse is to cut the rope with a knife. The quick release fastener, if
used, is not usually on the trailer, but on the horse’s halter. (Have you ever tried to get close to a thrashing
horse’s head to release him? It won’t happen). I’ve seen horses that lie down and get stuck under the trailer.
These horses’ legs look like raw hamburger when they get unstuck and sometimes the soft tissue damage is so
severe that the horse is out for the season. If tying to the trailer is the only option, the horses need to be tied
short enough so they can’t get their head below their knees – and subsequently can’t lie down to rest.
Ideally, this method of securing the horse should only be used for tacking him up.
This method is easy for the park or campground. No extra cost is involved and wear and tear to the ground is
spread out. But this method carries a very high risk of injury to the horses. I have witnessed two horse deaths
associated with trailer tying.
3) Using a Portable Electric Fence:
This method allows the horse to move and graze, but as I said before, horses will be horses. I’ve seen horses
play and run right through the fence. Others get chased through the fence by their best buddy reinforcing the
pecking order. These horses try to stop but end up sliding through the fence, getting tangled, panicking, breaking
the wire, and then being dangerously loose. Sometimes the posts that hold these lines can’t be set into the
ground properly and topple over in the slightest wind. And horses also try to eat that last blade of grass from
under the fence and get themselves into trouble. (This goes for portable corrals as well.) The worst incident I
witnessed was at an endurance ride in the fall when the horses were blanketed. For some reason they got out of
the pen (maybe they didn’t feel the shock of the fence through their blankets), but for whatever reason they
escaped and got out on the freeway. One horse was killed instantly as it went through the windshield of a car
(the people were not hurt). The other was horribly injured. I knew both the girls who owned them and the
horses. I cried. Granted, nothing is entirely safe, but we all do our best. The park or campground has no 33

associated with this system because the horse owners bring and set up their own corral. But not every camper
will have the means to provide this for their horses.

4) Using a Picket Line or High Line, with a Permanent Line (Rope, Cable, or Chain) Attached:
Using this method allows the horses to move, walk or trot in a small circle, and lie down. They can kick and rear,
and even scratch themselves with a rear foot. The freedom of movement helps prevent tying up and colic.
The issues I have had over the years (and I picket 5 or 6 head each time we hit the trail) is that while scratching
an itch, a horse may get his foot in the lead rope or even tangled in a halter. When a horse is attached to a
permanent cable or heavy marine rope, he may be hard to release if he gets tangled, and more importantly, a
cable does not give or stretch, so the horse’s leg maybe rubbed so raw that, the horse will be lame for an extended
period of time. The horse owner must have a quick release snap on the end that attaches to the line, for a lead
that is tied can’t be released quickly, especially if the lead it is damp or pulled tight, which it will be in a case of
entanglement.
Sometimes these permanent lines are not set far enough apart to avoid horse entanglements or horsy disputes.
Standard-sized horses need 8 to10 feet of space between them to allow for the weaker or lower ranking horse
to move away from an aggressor.
Many of these permanent lines do not have loops or rings permanently affixed on them, so the horse owner
must figure out a way to jerry-rig the rope so the horses’ leads do not slide together.
The park or campground has the expense of installing and maintaining posts and the high line. Because this is
a permanent fixture, erosion will occur in one spot and that one spot must be maintained so when it rains, the
horse is not standing in mud or water and the rider will be able to approach and tend the animal with out getting
covered in mud and slop.
The park or campground also must make sure that the camp is large enough to secure the number of horses that
one camper unit may bring (1 to 8 horses).
5) Using a Hitching Rail: (Two Posts with a Cross Piece at the Top)
Using a hitching rail works well for tacking up horses. The horse can stand fairly still while the rider moves
around him.
The hitching posts horizontal crosspiece should be made of a material other than wood because horses will
chew wood. Disadvantages are:
The park has an on-going expense of replacing crosspieces.
The horse gets splinters in his gums and mouth.
The owner has the responsibility and expense of treating the horse, which could involve the assistance of a
medical professional to remove splinters treat abscesses in the horse’s mouth.
To avoid this, the park could choose to use a pipe cross piece.
The height of the crosspieces also is an issue. Horse owners bring horses in many sizes, from a miniature,
standing at 9 hands (36 inches) high, to a warm blood, who can easily be 17 hands (5 feet 8inches) high. Ideally,
the crosspiece should be at the horse’s chest level, so where do you put a crosspiece?
I also have issues with these crosspieces themselves. Not only are they never the correct height, but a small
horse or a horse who lies down can get under these crosspieces and get into serious trouble. I have witnessed a
permanent back injury to a horse that got stuck under on hitching rail crosspiece. One of my horses got under
a crosspiece and came up on the other side. Of course she could not get down and crawl back under, so she
struggled with her head below her knees and the lead rope so tight that she could not move. Fortunately the
horses on the "wrong" side did not panic or viciously attach her, but she did receive a kick (from on of her herd
mates, telling her to go back to her own space, which clearly she could not do) before I got to her.
Because the hitching rail is a permanent fixture, it will cause erosion in one spot and that one spot must be
maintained so that when it rains the horse is not standing in mud or water and the rider will be able to approach
and tend the animal without getting covered with mud and slop.
The park also must make sure to provide enough area to secure the number of horses that one camper unit may
bring. (1 to 8 horses)

cable, chain or heavy rope at the top)

some of the injuries this arrangement has caused.

The biggest expense for the park would be the wooden crosspiece that runs parallel to the ground attached to
both upright poles. Horse’s love to chew on these crosspieces; in fact they chew on any horizontal positioned
piece of wood. This chewing is bad for all involved. The park has the ongoing expense of replacing these
crosspieces. The horse can get painful splinters in the gums and mouth, which can become infected. The owner
has the expense of treating whatever damage the horse does to himself. To avoid this, the the park could choose
to use a pipe crosspiece.
The park must also provide enough area to secure the number of horses that each camper unit will bring (from
one to eight horses).
7) Using a Picket Pole as a high line/picket line which can double as a Hitching Post and Hitching Post
A hitching post should be a metal pole at least 5 feet tall and 8 inches in caliber with a rounded top. The pole
should have rings welded at several heights to accommodate different sized horses. This configuration gives the
horse nothing to chew on and is tall enough that a horse rearing would not come down on the post and impale
himself. It also allows horse campers to secure their horses at the proper height for each horse.
The picket poles should be arranged in groups of three, spaced so that the campers by using their own rope can
secure up to eight horses. Each pole should be at least 10 feet high with rings at various levels so that the
campers can select the proper height for their horses. These poles work best if they are of treated wood such
as a telephone pole. Campers can either tie their horses directly to the poles or use the upper rings to run their
own rope between the posts to set up their own picket lines for the number of horses they plan to tie. Using
their own unattached rope lets the camper space their own rings or "stops" in the rope using the proper spacing
to avoid the horsy conflicts that so often arise.
Using a picket line allows the horses to move, walk, trot in a small circle, and lie down. This gives them enough
freedom of movement to prevent tying up. The horse can kick and rear, and even scratch themselves with a rear
foot.
I picket 5 or 6 head of horses each time we hit the trail and have only one issue with a picket line. While trying
to scratch an itch, a horse can get his foot caught in the lead rope or even a halter. Using a removable picket line,
all it takes to free the horse is to drop the line or undo a quick-release snap on the lead rope or crosstie. To free
a horse’s foot from a halter requires sheer strength. Then making sure the halter is properly tight the next time!
The worst injury I ever encountered was a slight rope burn on a rear pastern and the horse could still be ridden;
he was not lame. The "give" in the picket line keeps the rope from binding, cutting or laming a horse. The only
other incidence had happened when we left a young horse behind by herself. She reared up and her front feet
went over the picket line. The line gave, so she could move around. She felt as if she had a girth or lead rope under
her belly, and all we had to do to free her was release the lead rope and drop the line. She didn’t have a mark on
her because the line gave.
The horse campers will have to bring their own rope for a picket line or they will have to tie to the post using
their own lead ropes.
The park or campground will have to install the round posts - preferably not wood - if they’re being used as
hitching posts. Square wood posts have corner edges that invite horses to chew on them. Large round 10 to 12
inch caliber utility posts, such as electrical companies use, last for many years and do not invite much chewing.
The campground also will have the expense of setting the rings or nailing wooden blocks (to prevent the picket
rope from sliding down the post) to the posts at the various heights.
The height selection allows the camper the option of using the picket post as a hitching post, eliminating the
need for an additional hitching post. Also the post should have lower wooden blocks nailed to it or metal blocks
welded or bolted to it for use as a “step-up” by campers to reach the height needed for a higher picket line. Using
the picket pole system makes erosion easier to manage because campers will try to move their horses on the
picket or high line and change configuration to attempt to minimize wear. They too do not want to step in mud
and muck, so the wear pattern between the posts will be fairly even.
The park or campground will have to determine the number of horses it can safely accommodate and space the
posts so that the campers can safely secure that many horses. NOTE TO HORSE CAMPER - FYI for the park
staff: To safely set your lead rope on your line, adjust your line so that your picket fasteners, rings, or other
stops are spaced far enough apart to keep your horse’s leads from tangling with others. Then tighten the line
with your "tight rope" or self-tightening knots. Hang your leads so that when tugged on, they won’t get closer
to the ground than 16 to 18 inches. This allows the horse to get his head to the ground without any
interference from the lead. If you hang your hay bags from your line instead of from the posts, you might 35
need to retighten your line.

Your rope might have a tendency to stretch. Also when tying horses on leads long enough to let them lie down,
make sure your lead is 8 ft away from obstructions (e.g., vehicles, trailers, trees). We also have added D- loops
to the top of our trailer so we can picket from our trailer and our friends have done the same, so we literally have
a picket line city when we camp. All in all, we have found the picket line our best choice. It is the most versatile
for all sizes of horses and can accommodate the ever-changing number of horses that we haul around. Also, it is
by far the safest means of securing a horse, even though we have had the troubles I shared with you earlier.
8) Using a Ground Tying-Type Picket:
A ground tying-picket is a permanent block of concrete with a ring set into it. The block and ring are sent into
the soil and extend about 4 in. above the ground surface.
This is the least expensive restraint method for the park or campground, but the low cost of each station is
somewhat offset by the need to have many stations because only one horse can use each station.
This restraint method can be the risky for a horse who is not trained to handle a rope. When ground tying-type
picketing, the horse is restrained by having a picketing hobble attached to one foot, usually a hind, and a rope
of whatever length the camper chooses attached to the hobble at one end and to the concrete block at the other.
This restrain method allows the horse to move about, lie down, etc., but is not widely used in the US today.
9) Using Permanent Corrals or Box Stalls:
When permanent corrals or stalls are installed properly, they are the best, but also the most expensive type of
restraint for the following reasons:
-Fences must be at least 5 ft. high and should be made of pipe. Horses will chew anything made of wood and
can break any board that is not at least 2 -in thick oak. Cattle panels and woven wire and strands of wire can
cause horses to pull their shoes off and can cause severe, even fatal cuts. Each stall also must have hardware so
that the camper can tie hay bags and water pails.
-Stall walls must be 8 ft. high and solid from the ground up. The smallest stall size suitable for a horse is 10 ft.
by 10 ft. The largest practical size is 12 ft. by 12 ft. Each stall also must have hardware so that the camper can
tie hay bags and water pails.
-Permanent corrals and stalls also require the most maintenance of any restraint type. They are permanent
fixtures, making erosion an issue, especially for the stalls because horses in dirt-floored stalls paw more, and the
resulting holes and uneven ground must be filled regularly. This requires huge amounts of dirt fill.
-If the stalls are covered, they will become excellent breeding grounds for contagious diseases, because rain and
the sun’s ultra- violet rays are unable to kill the germs left by previous occupants.
Horse campers seem less willing to clean up after their horses in a corral situation because they are not willing
to walk all over a corral to clean up manure. More manure left behind means more flying insects, objectionable
smells, and the potential for parasite infestation.
If the facilities are safe and well-constructed, this is the ultimate restraint method from the campers’ viewpoint.
They just come in and put their horses to bed, no setting up, no worries, and no extra equipment to take along.
The park or campground will need a lot of room to provide the number of box stalls and corrals needed to
accommodate the number of horses that a camper could bring.
The park will also need to schedule weekly maintenance to replace and repair what the horses have pawed up,
chewed up, and pooped on the previous weekend.
Park Obligations: To keep the campground full, the Park must provide the following:
Safe and secure accommodations for horse campers
Ample space for large rigs
Level camping sites for the rigs
Ample space for campers who bring large families and a large number of horses
An ample water supply (preferably piped-in running water, not hand pumps)
A manure compost site (rakes and wheelbarrows are optional)
Bathroom facilities, including showers
Trash receptacles
Picnic tables and fire rings
Optional electrical hook-ups
Horse wash station on a pad of concrete pad near a water supply (most horse campers bring their own hoses,
buckets, and washing materials).
Sand pit for horses to roll
Do not be afraid to charge for the amenities you provide. If you do not charge enough, you will not get the
quality camper that you would like to have at your facility. Offering family and group rates, and taking some
reservations, you can provide a financial incentive for the quality of camper your would like to have using your
facility.
Remember that if a facility is welcoming, safe, and allows the campers some freedom, the facility will stay
full.
I sincerely hope that I shed some light on the various needs of campers with horses and the ways they
restrain their animals. I know I haven’t seen it all, but I have seen a lot. I respectfully submit this proposal

Tacky Tack Pad:Here is the saddle pad with so many great features

How do I make a pattern for a saddle sox or saddle pad? Cut a solid sheet of paper (the back of gift
wrapping paper works great) the length of the panel or skirt. Set the saddle on a stand and have a helper
lift up the saddle so you can slide the paper under the panel or skirt (we only need one side, so trace only
one side). We also recommend that you use a blanket or pad under the paper (over the stand) making
tracing easier. Then use a fine-tip "Sharpie ®"-type marker and trace the outline exactly. We will allow for
seam allowances and movement room. Cut out the pattern and fit it to the panel or skirt to check fit. You
MUST also locate both panel-mounting pedestals on the pattern and mark with an X; also write the
saddle’s serial number and seat size on the pattern, along with your name, before sending it to us. How
to trace a western saddle: Trace the skirt, lifting up drop yoke rigging. Then drop the rigging and trace
around that, including the "D" ring, but stopping there. The area that will give you the most difficulty is
tracing down the center of the saddle. Do your best, you will have to guess how the skirt panel flows (the
center does not fit into a pocket like the back and front, so DON’T let your guess stress you out). This
is your template and your saddle sox will be made exactly the way you submit your pattern. How to
trace an English or endurance saddle: Trace the panel, lifting up the flap. Then drop the flap and trace
around that. The area that will give you the most difficulty is tracing down the center of the saddle. Do
your best; you will have to guess how the panel flows (the center does not fit into a pocket like the back

Words About Wool: Wool is a natural fiber and is the ultimate in softness and support. Why?

Sweat Patterns and Pad Material: Sweating is the body’s natural cooling system. Sweat cools the
body as it evaporates. For this process to work, moisture must be exposed to air. Sweat patterns differ
depending on the pad material used.
1) Neoprene-, rubber-, and latex-based pads deliver the fastest sweat pattern. (If you were wearing
rubber underwear you would get hot right away.)
2) Pads with a wool or felt-type covering over an open- or closed-cell neoprene or foam also deliver a
quick sweat pattern.
With either of these pads, when the horse is thoroughly warmed up, globs of sweat run from under the
pad as he is literally wearing a sweat suit.
3) Synthetic fleece pads deliver a slower sweat pattern than the first two.
4) Felt wool and cotton pads initially deliver a sweat pattern similar to that of a synthetic fleece pad, but
actually begin to keep the back cooler. This happens as the wool or cotton, both natural products, allow
wicking action to absorb the sweat. Then air can move in and evaporate moisture, cooling the back. With
either a wool or cotton pad less sweat will run from under the pad than with the synthetic pads.
5) Wool fleece offers the most cooling because the fibers are loose and open, allowing excellent air and
moisture exchange. Because of this exchange, wool fleece will not show an immediate sweat pattern.
Thus, it can be difficult to determine uneven sweat patterns unless the horse has been worked hard
enough for sweat to be running from his ears and rump. Even then, when you remove the pad you will
see that the wool has wicked away much of the
moisture and you may just have a pattern of
dampness or compression.
In conclusion, material makes a difference in
how the horse’s back cools and how quickly sweat
patterns form.

Leather Cleaning: * Allow saddle to dry slowly and naturally after use. * Brush excess dirt and
perspiration salts from leather with a soft brush. * Dampen leather with a wet soft sponge till it
darkens uniformly. Use the least amount of water that will do the job. * With a soft firm brush, clear
bar glycerin soap and water, work up a uniform lather with a circular motion or use Bick 1 leather
cleaner. When you have removed the dirt and perspiration rinse your saddle with lukewarm water. *
Allow the saddle to dry slowly and naturally, preferably in the shade with a fan for ventilation.* After
the saddle has dried (when leather no longer feels cold to the cheek) condition the leather using oil,
Leather Max or Bick 4 leather conditioner. If your leather is very dry from water or excessive sweat, use
extra oil or Leather Max. Leather Max work well, but moderately darken leather. Pure neatsfoot oil
darkens leather quickly. Lexol NF will do a good job without darkening the leather too much or use Bick
4, which will not darken the leather at all. Choose which ever of the many food oils works best for your
saddle. Olive oil, corn oil, and Peanut oil also works well, but darkens leather.
Leather Care: * Keep your saddle clean and covered and avoid dust * Store in a cool dry place out of
direct sunlight * Use a saddle stand or a rope suspended from the swell of the saddle above the ground.
* Do not lay your saddle on the ground; leather absorbs moisture and this position will deform the
saddle’s shape. * Do not store near manure. Manure fumes contain ammonia that hardens and rots
leather. * Clean saddle every three months or after heavy use.* Use common sense. Leather is the skin
of an animal converted to a stable state. Treat leather as you would your own skin. * Do not use iron
or steel next to leather. The rusting action of iron rots leather. * Do not over-oil or over clean the leather,
too-much oil weakens its fibers. * Saddle soap or a glycerin bar can remove small amounts of dye from
in the leather; clean with these methods only when the saddle is heavily soiled.
How do I care for my neoprene tack such as girths? Wash all the manure and debris off. Then spray
with a Silicone spray, found in any automotive department store.
How do I care for my Delrin Panels? Depending on the amount of time you ride, the inserts/panels
should be oiled often. The mountings that hold the panels on your saddle are of steel or hardened steel.
In both cases you need to keep them rust free so use WD-40 as a solvent very sparingly and only for
this purpose. You will need to oil your mounts and washers (that slide and work against Delron - the
white plastic looking material). This (3 in One Household oil) can be purchased at any warehouse,
supermarket or automotive store etc. It comes in a small plastic or metal bottle with a thin straw like
tube for easy access to the mounts and inserts. Oil all 4 mounts and try to aim downward toward the
panels. Put some drops of OIL (3 in one Household oil) directly on the Delrin-panel (the white
plastic). After oiling, move the panel to distribute the oil under the washer/rear mount to distribute the
oil under the washers. This will keep the inserts and panels lubricated to let the panels move freely.
Helpful Hint:
In your tack room & horse trailer, put your animal’s name on a sticky label
above “their” tack hook and/or assign a color to each horse and use colored
ribbon to mark your horse’s tack. This makes things easy for everyone.

Normal Equine Vital Signs
Plus Rate: 30-40 (36 to 57) beats per minute. Respiratory Rate: 12 to 20 (10-20) breaths per
minute. Rectal Temperature: 99.5 to 101.5 degrees. Capillary refill: 2 seconds. Hydration: Pinch
skin should not stay “tented” longer than 2 seconds. (Variation in range based on age and size).
Tip: If you have your horses picketed for several days in the same area and find that the ground is
becoming nasty from the manure/urine and is attracting flies. Using a coffee cup, sprinkle a little barn lime
over those spots. The lime dries up the area making a nice solid surface repelling flies. Note; on barn lime,
a small bag (the size of a 10-pound flour bag) will weigh 50 lbs.!
Tip: For those of you who have natural dirt or a sandy/clay arena flooring you may notice that this gets
dusty when riding. You may already be spraying it down with water, but it still remains dusty and may
even get dustier. Here is the fix. If you wet down your arena by spraying water, add to this water some
sodium chloride (salt). Or better yet, get several bags of water softener granules and sprinkle this over
your entire arena. The first application will take several bags to settle the dust, but after this initial
application it will be a simple matter of maintenance. A sprinkle here and there and ta-da, no more dust!

*SAFETY TIP* For our young children we striped out the heavy western fenders and replaced them
with English leathers and Kwick Out safety irons. WHY? First let us look at the child’s leg. Children’s
legs in many cases stick straight out from the horse. Kids have small weak legs. It takes every bit of
effort for them just to keep their boots on, let alone, kick their horses’ sides hard enough to get them
moving. Knowing that kids have short legs that do not drop down easily onto the horses’ sides and
western fenders are thick, stiff, and hard to adjust tells us the child can’t “get his leg on the horse.”
Therefore, we put the English leathers on the saddle. They are soft, pliable and easily adjustable for the
long or short legged rider. The child can easily move these leathers, for there is less bulk to move and
more importantly the child can get his leg on the their horse - feeling the horse. We
also put Kwik Out safety stirrups on or you can use any iron with Toe Stoppers.
We have found, that there are no good western “safety” stirrups on the market for
children, with the exception of the tapadero, covered western stirrup or Toe
Stoppers. But these western set ups are still so hard for the kids to manipulate, due
to the bulk of the western fender. Many times they can they can only get the just the
tip of their boot in and do not have the downward pressure in many cases, to hold
their foot in the stirrup and subsequently lose their stirrup easily. With the English
leathers and irons the kids can get their feet deep in the stirrup (iron), regardless of
what boot they are wearing; and in the event of a spill the either the iron kicks open

You will have your saddle for a lifetime, but not your horse. So does your saddle fit properly?
Doesn’t it just make sense to get a saddle that does?
• When putting on the saddle without a pad do you have 2" of complete clearance between the saddle and your
horse’s spine while sitting in the saddle? You should.
• Do you give your saddle a snuggie? That is, pull the blanket up into the gullet so as to not bind your horse’s
spine. You should.
• Do you have a three-inch rotation around the horse’s point of hip, where no saddle or blanket is interfering?
You should.
• When using a breast collar do you have it adjusted so that you can pull it away from the horse’s shoulder 3"4", allowing the shoulder to move freely? You should.
• When you raise your horse’s leg up and forward, do you have the 3-4" of free shoulder movement without
interference from the saddle? You should.
• When using a crupper, can you raise it off your horse’s rump 3"-4"? You should.
• Do you and your saddle weigh more than 20% of your horse’s weight? You shouldn’t.
• When going either up or down hill does your saddle slip forward or back, so that you see more than 2" of
sweat? If so you need either a crupper or a breast collar.
• Do you have the proper length girth? When cinched up your girth should be no more than 6" away from
the D ring on a western saddle and halfway up the billets on either side on an English saddle.
• When you are completely cinched up and mounted can you get two fingers between the pad and spine of
horse? You should.
• When using a rear flank cinch, mounted up and ready to go, is your rear flank cinch hanging more than an inch?
It should NOT be.
• When in the saddle, have someone check your girth. If they can pull it away from the horse’s body more than
an inch it is too loose.
• Classic signs your saddle doesn’t fit are: Dry spots in the sweat pattern, patches of white hair, raised spots
or bumps where any equipment touches, a horse that resists being saddled. Look and listen to what your
horse says.
Anyone can make a beautiful saddle from the tree up, but if it doesn’t fit your horse what
good is it?

EQUINE SPORTS MEDICINE

The moving parts of the body were created and intended to move through a specified range of motion
freely, easily and completely. When for any number of reasons they lose the ability to do this there will
be a problem.... Muscular problems are most common to horses which are engaged in some form of
competition. Athletics, horse or human, produce a situation unique to all sports. The amount of strain
and exertion require to achieve maximum performance. What is maximum? How do you know when you
have reached it? You don't...Muscles can be an entire cause or a reflection of a deeper cause. It is always
proper to eliminate a deeper cause first. This is veterinarian expertise. The proper therapy for a muscle
problem could be the improper one for a deeper cause...
INITIAL EVALUATION

Before I begin any saddle fit or work as a Sports Massage Therapist, I always perform an evaluation on
the equine. The following is a very light overview of what I do to uncover areas of concern. Realizing that
muscle represents 60% of the entire body, massage makes so much sense. Massage is a practical, handson, non-invasive therapy for equines, enabling them to reach their full potential. Massage is most
effective as a preventive measure and is not a substitute for veterinary medicine. Massage increases the
range of motion, flexibility and circulation. It releases tension and improves the horse’s disposition.
Equines love massage. How do we know if our equine friends have pain? They cannot talk, but do
communicate non-verbally. Resistance in training or increased agitation resulting in poor performance and
bad behavior are symptoms that something is wrong. Proper fitting equipment and massage address the
cause of such trouble. "Putting the Horse First" lets us know that they are enjoying our company as much
as we enjoy theirs. Horses no longer are a beast of burden for man but a partner in a leisure activity that
everyone can enjoy. As for equipment, there is no question as to what our equine friends should be
saddled in: a properly fitted Delrin panel saddle. This saddling system allows the horse to move freely,
bending and flexing. It’s orthopedic. Since as a rider we will never know how it feels to be saddled, doesn’t
it make sense to get a saddle that feels as good to your horse as it does to you? If your current saddle fits
correctly and your horse can move freely and is not in pain (as determined by physical palpation) then
you have no reason to change your saddle. But how can you be sure? Looking at the figure, the circled
areas are pressure spots, the cross hatch marks are where you run your thumb or finger tips in a smooth
flowing fashion, observing areas of concern. When you begin, use 10-15 pounds of pressure. Along the
top of the spine you should use 20# of pressure. (You should have NO reaction but if you do, contact a
veterinarian or other professional for further advice.) Use a bathroom scale to judge your pressure and
test on yourself first.
IMPORTANT- MESSAGE As told
by: Mary Schriber- Equissage. When
you are near the equines face, watch
for teeth. There is a pressure point on
the cheek where you can place your
thumb and effectively prevent him
from tuning toward you. It is not
necessary to dig your thumb into the
pressure point, just simply rest it on
the surface. This action will dissuade
any biting response. Also, as you
work your way past the shoulder,
keep
your
eye on
the hind leg nearest
you. Inspired by the
fact that a horse is
capable of kicking a
fly off his ear, you are
cautioned to place
your free hand or fist,
with elbow locked,
near the stifle joint
both as a warning and
as a preventative for
you, and a reminder
for your client.

How to specifically test your saddle for fit on your horse
My horse has never has a sore back... How do you know?
Use physical palpation to determine if a saddle is potentially causing back and performance
trouble.

If you are certain your horse does (or does not) have a sore back you can confirm your convictions by
making clear non-biased evaluations. You will need to observe physical traits that indicate back soreness,
record behaviors in your horse, which are common to sore-backed horses and then palpate the muscles.
(Do this before riding and again 8 to 24 hours after riding.)
Physical traits:
· Do the muscles in the loin (gluteals) or "rump muscles" look especially tense ( some would call
them well-developed) so that they stand out dramatically? (Figure 1) Please note that some
breeds of horses "naturally" have over developed gluteals.
· Does the muscle which extends from the poll to the point of the shoulder down the lower side
of the neck (brachiocephalicus) look thicker and more developed than the upper half of the
neck, resulting in an almost ewe-neck appearance? This may be caused by the horse traveling
with a hollow back which forces him to fling out his legs to maintain his balance overworking
the brachiocephalicus. The brachiocephalicus helps pull the humerous forward which extends
the foreleg. It becomes over-worked and thicker due to repeated pinching of the trapezius
muscle at the withers which causes the horse to raise his head and lock down his back muscles.
(Figure 2)
· Look for a hollow behind the shoulder on either side of the horse. Muscle in this region tends
to diminish or atrophy when the nerves and muscles are pinched repeatedly. One almost never
finds this trait in the young, un-ridden horse. This hollow of atrophied muscles will disappear
once the horse has free lift and use of the back if permanent damage has not occurred. Also note
that the older horse will have gradual wasting along their top line and this is not to be confused
with pinching from an ill-fitting saddle. (Figure 3)

A hollow behind the shoulder frequently
indicates long term pinching just behind the
shoulder by the arch of the saddle. It is thought
that pinching of nerves causes atrophy of these
"saddle muscles" as the old-timers used to call
them. With a properly fitting saddle this hollow
will diminish as the muscles regain their proper
function.
Behavioral Traits: Once you have ruled out dentistry and shoeing as possible causes of bad behavior
and performance, the following acts of disobedience are usually directly linked to saddling pain or

• Does your horse not tolerate saddling, cinching or mounting?
• Bucks, runs away, nip, sidestep, and tosses head?

• Rear when girthed?
• Does not travel well downhill?
• Refuses jumps? Hard to catch?
• Stumbles frequently?
• Difficulty walking calmly?
• Quits working mid-season?
• Tacks-up more on one side that the other?
• Do his gaits appear uneven?

Test for soreness in the “check point” muscles: There are
three important muscles that can let you know instantly if
your horse is suffering pain due to his saddle even if there is
no pathology visible on the back. Most riders use enough
padding and rest their horses just enough to prevent bruising of the This horse is alert but content

This tension flows to all connected muscle groups. The horse operates in a tense and unnatural form and
this places stress on other parts of his body, hard to believe a saddle could affect so many parts of the

Three major check point muscles are: The semimembranosis
(on either side of the tail - in the hind quarters), the

brachiocephalicus (following the lower half of the neck from poll to
shoulder) and the triceps at the elbow. Many other muscles could
also be probed, but these three, combined with your other findings,
are all you need to make a trustworthy diagnosis. You will probe
these muscles quickly and sharply with the ends of three fingers or
your thumb held stiff. Remember, any force of the bite of kick
your horse is likely to receive in the herd environment is far greater
than any force you could possibly exert by using the ends of your
fingers, however sharply. You will not injure your horse in any
way by this probing, but you may discover that your horse's
muscles jump violently when probed. Most novices probe too
softly to

their horse and are left with the impression their
horse is not sore. TTEAM therapy inventor,
Linda Tellington Jones, once stated that one
must probe as firmly as necessary to get a
reaction to see if the horse is sore. She

Jerry’s Crepes
3 eggs
1 C. milk
1 C. flour
1 Tbs. Sugar
3 Tbs. Melted Butter
1 Tsp. Salt
3 Tsp. Baking powder
In bowl, mix after each ingredient. Melt
butter in the same pan you will cook in. In
hot pan pour ½ cup of batter, swirling pan to
thin out batter. Flip when top is dull. Serve
rolled up with jam, sugar, maple syrup or
plain.

2 Tbs. melted butter - melted in cook pan.
Mix all dry thoroughly then add liquid. Cook
pancakes as you would normally flipping
when all bubbly and dull on top.

1 C. flour
1 Tsp. Sugar

Chuck’s Easy Rhubarb Cake
4 C. Chopped Rhubarb
1 Yellow Cake Mix
1 ½ C. Sugar
1 Pint whipping cream
Mix cake as directed, mix and pour into a
9 x 13-greased pan. Drop rhubarb over cake
mix, sprinkle sugar over rhubarb and pour
whipping cram over all of it. Set pan on top
of a cookie sheet to catch spills. Bake 45 min
at 350 degrees or until center starts to turn
brown.
Camping Cheese Cake
2 Pkg. Cream cheese
2 Eggs beaten
1 Tsp. Vanilla
½ C. Sugar
Graham cracker crust *
16 oz sour cream **
1/2 c. sugar **
*To make crust mix ½ c. crushed graham
crackers, ¼ C. granulated sugar, ¼ C.
powder sugar, 1/3 c. melted butter – press
into pan and bake at 350 for 10 minutes,
before adding filling. Blend until creamy
frist four ingredients, pour into graham
cracker crust Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.
Mix and add topping ** and bake for an
additional 10 min. at 400 degrees.
Key Lime Pie
1) 14oz. Sweetened condensed milk
1) 8 oz. Cream cheese
½ to ¾ C. key lime juice
½ Tsp. Vanilla
Mix and pour into graham cracker crust. *
Mix all and pour into crust. Cool and serve
with whipped cream. *To make crust mix ½ c.
crushed graham crackers, ¼ C. granulated
sugar, ¼ C. powder sugar, 1/3 c. melted

4 C. Chopped Rhubarb
1 ½ C. Sugar
1/3 C. Melted butter
¾ C. Flour
1 Tsp. Cinnamon
½ Tsp. salt
Put rhubarb in shallow pan & sprinkle with
cinnamon and salt. Mix remainder of
ingredients & cover rhubarb.
Bake
uncovered at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
Serve with cream or vanilla ice cream.
Rice Crispy Squares
¼ C. Butter
10 oz. Bag marshmallows
6 C. Rice Crispies
Melt butter in large kettle, add
marshmallows heat until melted. Add rice
crispy. Stir until coated. Press mixture into
greased pan. Cool.
Grandma’s Fudge Sauce
2-3 Tbs. Corn starch
3 Tbs. Cocoa
¼ Tsp. Salt
1 C. Water
1C. Sugar
Mix all ingredients and cook until thick, then

¼ C. Water
½ C. Raisins or Crasins (Optional)
½ C. Sugar
½ to ¾ C. Brown Sugar

½ C. Butter
½ Tsp. nutmeg
½ Tsp. cinnamon
Put apples, raisins and water in shallow pan.
Mix dry ingredients and sprinkle over
apples. Dot with butter. Bake uncovered at

4 cups of any fresh fruit (berry or pit fruits)
½ C. Sugar
½ Tsp. Cinnamon (omit if you are using

Mix above and pour into casserole dish.

1 C. Flour
1 C. Sugar
1 Tsp. Baking powder
1 egg beaten
½ C. evaporated milk
1/3 C. Melted butter
Mix and pour over fruit. Bake uncovered at
325 for 50-60 minutes.

1 C. Strawberries or 1 ½ C. Cherries
1 C. Blue berries
1 C. Rasberries or Blackberries
2 Tbs. Corn starch or 2 Tbs. Flour or 2 Tbs.
Tapioca
1 Tbs. Lemon juice.
Pie crust
Mix and pour into lightly floured uncooked
pie crust bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes
and then reduce heat to 350 and cook 35 to
45 minutes longer. OR you can put berries
into a casserole and cover fruit with the
crust. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minuts,
then reduce heat to 350 and cook 20 minutes
longer.
Arla’s Fruit Pizza
1st Layer
½ C. Powdered sugar
¾ C. Melted butter
1 ½ C. Flour
Mix well and press onto a pizza pan that is
covered with aluminum foil. Press out to
form a pizza crust. Bake at 350 degrees for
15 minutes (+ or -). Cool.
2nd Layer
2) 8 oz cream cheese
1 C. Sugar
2 Tea. Vanilla
Blend until smooth. Spread over crust when
cool.
3rd Layer
Top with fresh or drained canned fruit. Save
1 C. of juice (I like pineapple)
4th Layer
1 C. Fruit juice
½ C. sugar
2 Tbs. Corn starch
Mix and boil until thick. Cool & spoon over
fruit. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

4 C. Flour
1 Tbs. Sugar
1 Tsp. Salt
1 ¾ C. Solid vegetable shorting (Crisco)
1 Tbs. Vinegar
1 Lrg. Egg
½ C. Water
Mix dry ingredients and then add shorting.
Use pasty knife to cut in or use fork. Mix
uniformly. In small bowl mix water with egg
and vinegar. Combine ingredients mix in
bowl using your hand, form into ball. Cover
and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Remove and
cut into 4 th.’s Freezes well.

¼ C. Shortening (Crisco)
¼. C. Butter
½ C. Sugar
½ C. Brown sugar
1 Egg
½ C. Peanut butter

Mexican Flan

C. Real mayonnaise, 1 Tbs. Vineagar, 2 Tsp.
Lemon juice, 1 Tsp. Mustard and ½ Tsp.
Salt. Fill halfs and garnish with paprika.
Dad’s Hot mulled cider
1 Gallon apple juice or cider
½ C. Brown sugar
dash nutmeg
6 cinnamon sticks
1 Tsp. Whole all spice

1 orange sliced
Put ingredients in gauze mesh bag tied shut
or strain the solids out later. Bring to boil
and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove spice
bag. Serve. Optional for adults add one
jigger of Southern Comfort liquor per cup.
Party Punch
1 C. Sugar
1 Pkg. cherry Kool-Aid
1 Pkg. Strawberry Kool-Aid

3 quarts water

Mix in a one-gallon jug. I double this

In blender, mix above and add ice enough to

For topping: ½ C. Seasoned breadcrumbs
mixed with 2 Tbs. Melted butter.
Butter a 1 Qt. Casserole. Add ingredients
and top with breadcrumb mixture. Bake at
350 degrees for 30 minutes.
Zucchini Appetizers
3 C. Thinly sliced zucchini
1 C. Bisquick mix
½ C. Chopped Onion
½ C. Grated Parmesan cheese
2 Tbs. Parsley
4 Eggs beaten
½ Tsp. Salt
Dash pepper
½ C. Vegetable oil
½ Tsp. Accent (optional)
½ Tsp. Marjoram
½ Tsp. Oregano
Combine all mixing the zucchini in last. Put
into a greased 13 x 9 x 2 pan. Bake at 350 to
425 degrees until golden brown. About 25
minutes.
Potato Soup
2 Diced medium potatoes
1-2 Chopped onions
1C. Chopped celery about 4 stalks.
½ to 1 Tsp. Salt (use lesser amount if using
bacon)
1 bay leaf
1to 2 C. Chicken stock or 2 bouillon cubes
with 1to 2 C. water.
1- 1 ¼ C. Milk
½ C. Cream (opt.)
1 Tbs. Chives
¼ Tsp. Nutmeg
2 Slices cooked chopped bacon (Optional)
Sauté onions and celery with butter in cook
pot. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer
until potatoes are done (the longer the better
the flavor).
Cheese Soup – a Peruvian dish
1 Med. Onion chopped
1 Med. Tomato chopped
2 Cloves garlic chopped
Sauté above in 1-2 Tbs. Olive oil. Add:
4 C. Water
2 Chopped potatoes
When potatoes are cooked add:
Spaghetti (the diameter of a nickel then
break in half.

½ C. Finely chopped Gouda cheese
1 Tsp. Salt

1 Onion chopped

In bacon fat, brown onion, then add the
remaining ingredients and cook until thick.
Pour over cooked sliced potatoes and mix in
crumbled bacon. Cool and refrigerate for 24
hours before serving either warm or cool.
Broccoli Salad 1
One head Broccoli chopped
1 lb. Mushrooms sliced
4-6 Green Scallions sliced
Mix with & marinate 8 to 12 hours.

2 Tsp. Celery seed
4 Tbs. Grated onion
½ C. Cider vinegar
Broccoli Salad 2
Head Broccoli chopped or mix with ½ head

¼ C. Sugar

12 oz. Fried chopped bacon.
Mix and marinate over night.
Sharon’s Caesar Salad
2 heads romaine lettuce
½ C. Olive oil
1 tin anchovies
1 egg
¼ C. Lemon juice
2 to 3 cloves garlic chopped fine
¼ Tsp. Worchester sauce
1/3 C. Parmesan cheese to taste
Pepper to taste
Croutons as desired
Toss and tear lettuce mix with oil. Drain and
chop anchovies. Beat egg with anchovies
and lemon juice. Add finely chopped garlic,
Worchester sauce, cheese etc. Mix all.
Potatoes O’ Gratin
2 Lbs. Sliced potatoes 1/8th inch thick
2 cloves chopped garlic
1 Tbs. Butter
2 ¼ C. Half and half
1 ¼ Tsp. Salt
Pinch pepper
Pinch nutmeg
Pinch cayenne pepper (opt.)
Rub casserole dish with ½ of garlic and
butter. Simmer half and half, salt, pepper,
nutmeg, garlic and potatoes – cook until
liquid thickens. Pour in baking dish. Dot
with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour
or until golden – you may have to baste with
butter.

Round steak

2 Tomatoes or 15 oz can
½ Tsp. Salt

1 Cup Flour (- or +)
½ C. Milk
2 to 3 C. Cooked noodles
Brown meat and onion. Add remaining
ingredients and simmer 20 minutes.

1 Chopped onion
1 Can cream of mushroom soup
1 Can cream of celery soup
Add:
1 can cream of mushroom soup
½ C. Milk

noodles.

15 oz. Pizza sauce

Combine all ingredients except noodles.
Warm gently for 10 minutes as you are
cooking the noodles. When noodles are
cooked, drain them and add to mixture. Bake
in casserole at 350 until brown on top or just
serve warm.

2 Cans drained Tuna
2 Cans cream of mushroom soup
1 Large or small can of drained peas
Pinch pepper
1 Tbs. Lemon juice
1 C. Shredded cheddar cheese
4 Tbs. Soy sauce
2-3 Tbs. Corn starch
Bag of chow mien noodles
In large kettle, Brown meat in butter with
bead molasses. Add celery and onion.
Cover with water and cook slowly about 30
minutes. Add vegetables. In cup mix
cornstarch with soy sauce and then add this
to thicken the dish, stirring. Serve over rice
with chow mien noodles.

1 Can bamboo shoots (optional)
