Where the chalk hills of the Artois blend into the plains
of Flanders and the coastal plains reclaimed from
the sea. With its many springs, rivers and wetlands, water is
ever-present here. It is what gives the countryside its lush greenness and rich variety of wildlife.
Over the centuries, men have tamed the waters of
the rivers and marshes, thus forging many different
landscapes to be enjoyed on foot, by bike, by boat
or even by steam train!

The old Roman roads from England, Flanders and France have
converged here since ancient times, when merchants, pilgrims,
scholars and priests flocked to the region which has also been
the scene of many a battle.

aint-Omer, a seat of religion Resulting from the two places
of worship founded by Saint Omer, the «town with the lovely
steeples» as the diarist Froissart called it, has been the home of
many religious communities throughout its history. Promoted to the
rank of bishopric when Thérouanne fell in the 16th century, this seat
of Catholic instruction enjoyed a revival in the 19th century.
This tour links the two points of origin of the town, the old chapel
founded by Omer which became a collegial church before being
consecrated as the cathedral of Notre Dame D , and Saint-Bertin’s
abbey A .
Admire the rich architecture and interior decoration of the cathedral* before taking a walk around its close 1 overlooked by the old
bishop’s palace 2 (now the law courts). You then walk through the
old college quarter which has been dedicated to education for four
centuries. Don’t miss the imposing Baroque facade of the Walloon
Jesuit chapel 3 with its five beautifully restored storeys.
A visit to the heritage room of the library 4 located a few steps
away (n°. 40 rue Gambetta) enables you to get a full grasp of the
extent of the influence of Saint-Bertin’s abbey. With its stepped
gables, the old episcopal seminary 5 recalls the period when the
town was under Flemish rule. Note the classical style of the English
Jesuits’ College 6 at n°s 45/49 rue Saint Bertin, where some of the
Carroll family came to study and went on to become the founding
fathers of the USA, and at nos 51/57, admire the «gothic revival» style
of Saint-Bertin’s college 7 .
Once at the site of the ancient close of Saint-Bertin’s abbey 8 , take
in the beauty of the ruins and learn more about how the abbey and
cloister were organized by reading the well-presented information
boards. At night, the ruins are floodlit to show them off to their best
advantage.

his tour combines some of the main features of the historic centre with a look around the shops. While pavement cafés and
shops have now replaced the market stalls, there is still a large
market held in the square each Saturday morning.
Grande Place D (or place Foch as it is now called), is well named
as it measures no less than 18000 square yards, illustrating the former
power of the city. A textiles trading town, Saint-Omer used to be one
of Europe’s ten largest cities in 1300.
The ancient bâtiment de la scelle built in 1593 (now housing the
Société Générale bank) used to be an annex of the halle échevinale, the seat of municipal power. It was replaced in the 19th century
by a hôtel de ville 9 which also had some commercial functions.
The hôtel de ville has been nicknamed the «coffee mill» ever since
it was built. Take a look at its outline to see why! And what is even
more curious is that it contains within its walls a splendid Italianate
theatre which can be visited during European Heritage Days. On the
other side of the square, the old bailiwick (now housing the Caisse
d’Epargne bank) that used to contain the offices of the king’s representative, stands out with its graceful lines, white stones and statues
representing Strength, Justice, Prudence and Temperance.
Take the pedestrianized street «des cuisiniers» (of the cooks, now
rue Louis Martel) which opens into the place Victor Hugo 10 , the
town’s oldest market square, nestling beside the cathedral close.
The market used to spill over into the «grosse rue» (rue Carnot)
11 which still has some wine cellars dating back to the middle
ages.
Further down is the place du Vainquai 12 opposite which was
the Wineplache where the barrels of wine used to be unloaded. At the end of the quai des Salines 13 lay the ancient port
of the town. From there, goods would be taken up the rue de
Dunkerque 14 to the Grande Place A . See how many signs

SAINT-OMER AND ITS CHARMING TOWN HOUSES

aint-Omer has close links with water. It is partly built on the
marshes and many of its old canals have now been covered over. By following the docksides and rivers, you will
find yourself in the outer districts, or faubourgs, that lie between
the town and the marshes.

dating back to the 17th and 19th centuries which give
the city its particular, almost theatrical, charm. It ends up
at the Sandelin Mansion museum A with its fully restored 18th
century interior.

Starting from the place Victor Hugo D , the tour first takes you
past some fine examples of Flemish stepped gable houses
lining the rues de l’Ecusserie and Caventou up to the rue SaintBertin 15 .
The style of the architecture here is more classical, in stone or
brick and dominated by the horizontal lines of the facades.
There are also some fine pillared houses near to the close of
Saint-Denis 16 .
In the rue Saint-Bertin which leads to the close, the unadorned
façade of the hôtel de Berghes (n° 20) contrasts with its interior
décor which shows how people lived in the 18th century. Take
the narrow alleys to the ancient close of Saint-Jean (now called
place Saint-Jean) 17 .
As soon as you step through the door of the Sandelin Mansion
museum A , housed in a classic town house with a courtyard
in front and a garden at the back, you are plunged into the
atmosphere of how the nobility lived during the Ancien Régime.
See some of the masterpieces housed in the collections of
medieval art, weapons, ceramics and paintings.
In the nearby you can see some other elegant 18th century
facades rue Allent and rue de Wissocq 18 .

It is in the lowest parts of the town, such as the port au lait battu
D that you can see the rivers that flow in and out of the city.
Visit the Maison du Marais 19 (opening in 2014) to learn about
this unique area. After the fortifications were demolished, the
newly created boulevard de Strasbourg attracted people who
were looking for large plots of land to build their Art Nouveau
and Art Déco homes (see n°s 24 and 26, 38 and 39, 76, 80, 94
and 96).
Follow the quai des Salines into the old town to see the
caserne d’Albret, the old arsenal and the monumental railway
station 20 .
From the railway station you can choose between two walking
tours, both returning to the station: Saint-Omer, marshes-side*
takes you to the faubourg de Lyzel 21 where you can see the
network of wateringues and the traditional homes of the old
market gardening families; Saint-Omer, town-side* takes you
along the tow path of the Neufossé canal to the ruins of SaintBertin’s abbey and close.

which follows the line of the old city walls, to reach the faubourg
du Haut-Pont via the vast place de la Ghière 23 . The market
gardener’s houses reflected in the canal at the front, look onto
the marshes at the back.
For a greener setting, just a stone’s throw from Place Foch,
the beautifully landscaped public gardens** 24 have been
installed in the old fortifications. They contain formally laid-out
gardens, a pleasant square with bandstand and shrubberies,
together with an arboretum which boasts around thirty remarkable species.

his site really takes us back to the origins of the town! Formerly known as
the «bourg» from the Flemish word for
castle, this was the very first castle around
which the town was built and founded by
the first Flemish counts in the
tenth century. It is one of

in an urban environment. It
previously housed a wooden keep before
archaeologists uncovered the old stone
keep that had been recorded in some old
engravings, together with the thick stone wall
that surrounded it.
It was the home of the castellan (or chatelain) of Saint-Omer who watched over the

lands of the castellany on behalf of the
count.
The keep was later used as a prison. At the
start of the 18th century, it was destroyed and
replaced some decades later by a prison
in the Vauban design. This robust brick and
stone three storey edifice is remarkably well
preserved and has just undergone restoration. Its jails are now open to visitors who may
be in for some surprises… It also contains a
series of exhibitions on the role of the town
when it was the British Army HQ during the
Great War.
Gardens extend out from the building and
provide a vantage point over the surrounding
area, offering a particularly good view of the
cathedral and a stunning panorama of the
town and its districts.

THE JESUIT CHAPEL
THE JESUIT CHAPEL
T
he Jesuit Chapel stands out in the urban landscape for
its size and vibrant colours. This large edifice illustrates
the important place the college of the Walloon Jesuits
set up in 1566 held in the town, a seat of learning from the
Renaissance to the Revolution. Back when it was founded, the Catholic bishops were in confrontation with the reformation movement. They called upon
the help of the Company of Jesus, otherwise known as the
Jesuits, to give young people the teaching
they believed was right, and to train future

The chapel was built from 1615 to 1640 by
Jean du Blocq (1583-1656), a Jesuit architect

who designed the cathedral of Luxemburg. He was inspired by
Gesù, the Jesuit church in Rome, and combined the Gothic
tradition in its structure of ribbed vaults, buttresses and side
chapels, with a completely new style based on a single central
volume, large scrolls and an impressive facade whose portal
was borrowed from the Italian architect Serlio.
Current restoration work on the building is revealing the full
beauty of its sculptures, particularly those of the facade. The
architect wanted us to see that he had read the Art of Building
and rediscovered the designs used in antiquity, such as those on
the white stone or the intriguing ox skulls featured in the portal.
Next to the chapel, the town library has its headquarters in the
former boarding school and in the classrooms of the secondary
school, rebuilt at the end of the 19th Century. It is organized
around a garden and edged by 4 centuries of architecture
(building closed to the public).

n Saint-Omer, hidden in the Town Hall, you can find a small
theatre offering forgotten splendour and little known gilding.
Built by the architect Pierre Bernard Lefranc, it has the features
of the theatre which appeared in Venice in the XVIIe century
and is obeying the Italian Nicolas Sabbatini’s ideas: stalls reserved
for the popular audience and boxes for the well-off ; a stage with
a sloping floor, fixed and mobile sets, and a machinery invisible
for spectators. With the difference that, in France, and particularly in our Saint-Omer theatre, each lodge is set back from the
lower box, creating a harmonious whole that enhances the richly
decorated ceiling and the large chandelier adorned with pendants.This chandelier can be hidden in the ceiling during performances. Colours, sculptures and trompe l’oeil paintings participate in the enchantment that emerges from the ensemble.
If your steps lead you to places inaccessible to a mere spectator,
you can see the stage house where the machinery is located .
However, you won’t see the earthen vases which are embedded
in the walls: they contribute, with the wood framing, to offer
excellent acoustics. Their use dates back to the ancient theatre
and they were also used in the Middle Ages to improve the transmission of sound in some churches.
At the opening of the theatre, on October 18, 1840, were
played an opera, «The black domino» and a vaudeville, “Aînée
et Cadette” (“Elder sister and younger sister”), quickly followed
by numerous plays. The contemporary spectator, except if he/
she can be transported back in time, can’t come and sit to
applaude the actors as they are bowing, because the theatre
has been closed to the public for safety reasons since 1973. But a

proximity between the audience and the artists is interesting and

- On Saturday 22nd August, British Jesuits in Saint-Omer. Chased away from
England during the establishment by Henri the 8th of the Anglican Church,
numerous Jesuits found refuge in France in the 16th Century. The secondary school open in Saint-Omer welcomed prestigious pupils, as the Caroll
Brothers or Daniel O’Connell, considered as the Father of the Irish nation.

Everyone has already dreamt once of discovering a treasure… This
is exactly what Mr Rémy Cordonnier, responsible for the heritage
Founds of the town library, did, as he identified a First Folio, first
in-folio edition of Shakespeare’s complete works, and as he organized an exhibition about English-speaking authors in the collections of the Audomarois region. You can now discover yourselves
this treasure thanks to the “Shakespeare, What else?” exhibition.

T
his is the point where, after a bend, the Aa river enters
the Audomarois marshes. The story of the town is closely
linked to water. First of all, Arques was a mill till the French
Revolution and then a village depending on the Saint-Bertin
Abbey.

mill, a brewery...), beautiful mansions made in yellow bricks from
the 18th Century and finally the church and the castle with its
medieval base. We still can discover treasures of hydraulic engineering of all times as the impressive modern locks.
The church, the castle and the houses in front of it are witnesses
of its past. The digging of the Neuffossé canal at the end of
the 18th Century made the creation from the year 1825 of a
first glass-making factory easier. It was situated on its banks near
the locks, in a place known as les Fontinettes. It is nowadays
the head office of the world tableware leader. The village has
become a 10,000 inhabitants city-workshop, where industrial and
residential houses are mixed.
The boat lift dated 1885, the British engineer Edwin Clarck’s work,
is unique in France and was listed in 2014 ; its restoration should
begin soon.
The big winnowing was made in 1782 in order to regulate the
entry of the Aa water into the marshes, through a siphon under
the canal.
Finally, the river base and its marina replaced former shipyards.
One more surprising thing: you can walk through preserved
beautiful natural areas as the Malhove ponds, which are the fruit
of former quarries, used for industry and the buiding industry, or
through the national forest, often named Clairmarais.
A square and a city hall / school have been built then at the
beginning of the 20th Century, to go from the village centre to
the factory and, at the same time, to confirm this new identity.
They hide a pleasant public park, crossed by
one of the arms of the Aa river.

he first glassworks was founded in
1825 in Arques at the place known as
les Fontinettes situated at the foot of
the ladder of locks, by the Des Lyons de
Noircarmes family.
The location was ideal, right beside the canal
for transporting raw materials and exporting sand quarried locally. Throughout the
19th century, the successive factory owners
manufactured demijohns and bottles.
The factory was bought in 1897 by Prudent
Avot, a paper manufacturer in Blendecques.
He put Georges Durand at the helm: he
proved so successful in managing the business that he took it over in 1916. Business
with Britain boomed during the Great War
and continued to develop after the war.
The glass was still produced manually and in
the 1930s the factory produced 10 tonnes of
glass per day.
After a trip to the USA in 1930, Georges
Durand revolutionized the production
process with a new kiln, marking the
start of mechanized production and
diversification (windscreens for cars). He
brought his son Jacques into the business
and hired engineers to perfect the production machinery. At the end of World
War II, his return to the USA heralded
the beginning of a new development
which included modern machinery, product diversification and innovative new
brands, which went on to make the
company a household name. The factory was extended beyond the original
site, creating a miniature town within the
town. Its exports grew and the company
changed its name to Arc International,

T
he construction of the Neufosse canal linking the Aa and Lys
rivers at Aire-sur-la-Lys began in 1758. With the development
of industry in the 19th century, its economic role took precedence over its initial military purpose.
The main obstacle in its construction was how to cross the south
bank of the Aa valley in the place known as “Les Fontinettes” in
Arques. To compensate for the 13.13 meter difference in level,
the military engineers had constructed a ladder of seven locks
in succession. As traffic on the canal increased, the barges had
to wait increasingly longer to cross the locks. In the 1880s, the
construction of a hydraulic lift offered a solution to this problem.
The call for tenders was won by the English engineer Edwin Clark,
who was to work with a French engineer called Bertin.

railway bridges were built over the canal. The manoeuvres, requiring six men and taking only 20 minutes, were controlled from a
cab at the top of the central tower.
With new European canal gauges, the lift became too small
and had to be closed in 1967. This construction is the only one
of its kind in France. It became a listed building in 2014 and will
undergo restoration in 2016.

the capital of the Morini, a people of Belgian Gaul. After it
was conquered by Caesar, it became a crossroads of Roman
roads and a major town developed there.

he hillsides stretch on the North-Western side
of Saint-Omer, right at the edge of the Artois
hills. This site, made of dry small valleys, partly
overhangs the marshes and is the territory of wind
mills too ; Moringhem and Norbecourt still have
the two most beautiful ones.

As for these mills, we still can see beautiful buildings in white
limestone : farms, the Saint-Leger and Saint-Gilles machicolated churches in Mentques or the Saint-Maxime church and its
roman tower in Difques.
The listed roadside cross in Nort Leulinghem, dated 1780 is one
of the most notable ones in the area. Moreover, there is a fragile
heritage of land, former castle clods, that were the first castles,

It is crossed to the north by the river Hem with
its tumbling clear waters. At the Zouafques ford,

seems to stand still. At the top of the hill, the old chapel located
in a conservation area looks over one of the finest panoramas

FRUGES THE WHITE STONE JEWEL
T
he wars of the 16th and 17th centuries destroyed the fortress
and mediaeval town of Fruges, where 55 houses were rased
to the ground by a fire in 1595. The town was reconstructed
in the 17th and 18th centuries, with elegant white stone and brick
town houses lining the square and nearby streets. The facades
of the most opulent of these houses, such as that of the former
senator Louis Boudenot, are decorated with faces, animals and
arabesques. Its museum is named after the local priest, Nestor
Delétoille, also an avid collector and historian with a flamboyant personality. Fruges was also the birthplace of the novelist
Marguerite Duras’ mother in 1877.

would be sold in the local fairs and markets. While there were already some cobblers in the town in 1473, the craft really

the region’s war memorials, that put Fruges on the map.
With the arrival of the railways at the end of the 19th century, the
rue de la Gare developed around the station, with a ballroom
and cinema and houses built in the style of a seaside resort. From
there, the rue des Digues was always a nice place for a stroll
along the Traxène river to the Bât-l’Eau watermill. With its Feast
of Saint-Gilliet and model giants Pô-Louche and Marie Robinet,

The Priest Deletoille Museum
T
his museum presents an important part of the collections that Priest Delétoille had gathered and that he had
showed in his house in the Fountains Street. Since 1992, the
museum has been enriched with Mr Albert Raoult’s legacy.
These collections gather more than 600 works from the 18th,
19th and 20th Centuries, among which earthenware and
pewter objects, useful or ornamental cupper works, weapons,
pipes, shoes and tools that remind local handicrafts. A collection of more than 200 postcards and documents shows the
town of Fruges at the beginning of the 20th Century.

in front of the cathedral, you sometimes forget that a few steps are
enough to get back to nature. If the architectural heritage of the city
is fabulous, you shouldn’t miss its marshes which is not less sumptuous. Recently recognized by the UNESCO, it undoubtedly deserves a
visit and attention.

a lot to enjoy in these places. La Maison
du Marais organizes outdoor or indoor
activities, for the enjoyment of young

In La Maison du Marais
All through the year, la Maison du Marais
offers two staged exhibitions: a tem-

porary exhibition and a permanent
exhibition. They demonstrate how lively and well-diversified the marshes is.
The permanent exhibition addresses a
variety of topics related to the marshes. It enables us to bury ourselves in
this environment and discover its history
and formation, its activities and jobs,
its fauna and flora, traditions and legends. The exhibitions are translated into
English and Dutch and are also accessible to the visually impaired. Its path,
adapted to children, gives the opportunity to have a good time with family.
Visitors can also enjoy free access to the
waterside restaurant and terrace, an
opportunity to taste local produces. As
for the shop, it sells books and produces
with a direct link to the marshes.
To carry on with the getaway
Discovering the marshes of Saint-Omer,
it is primarily spending some time sailing
along its meanders. La Maison du Marais
offers several types of outings in barges
(called “bacôves”). A surprising moment
in nature which will leave you an unforgettable experience.
Explorers will have the choice between a
classic outing, “La balade sur le marais”
(“a ride on a boat on the marshes”) and
the ride “déjeuner sur l’eau” (“lunch on
the marshes”) that will appeal to those
fond of good food.
To catch other colours or sounds from
the marshes, you can choose the ride
“fin de journée” (“end of the day”). In
the evening, the fauna has gradually
reclaimed the scene and the brightness begins to change. Some poetry
over water. For the more adventurous,
La Maison du Marais offers three times
a week the “escapade nocturne” (“the
night ride”). If the first part of it is in the
daylight, the fair-weather sailors will be
guided by the moon on their way back.
Night gives another dimension to the
sounds of owls and brings the marshes
all its magic. The last half an hour of this
adventure is dedicated to the tales and
legends of the marshes, younger ones
are very fond of that.
Finally the “balade décalée” (“off the
wall ride”) is for those who wish to feel
the marshes differently. For this ride, the
usual guides give way to a historic character who invites himself/herself to punctuate this tour with anecdotes and bursts
of laughter about the marshes.

he Audomarois area is a country for sport par excellence
and the tourist and cultural entrance to the Opale Coast.
The “Human Being and Biosphere” designation given to the
marsh of the Audomarois region by the UNESCO and the labeling
as “the Saint Omer Land of Art and History” have reinforced this
situation and our mainspring role in tourism in the Nord-Pas-de
Calais region.
After having organized the French Championship of the Future
in August 2014, having been a stopover point during the “4 days

A Polar Bear at the
Planetarium
James, a travelling Penguin from the South
Pole, and Vladimir, a funny polar bear from
the North Pole, meet on the ice bank of
the Arctic. We are on the scene of the fun
and educational film “Polaris” where both
of these animal friends, and apprentice
astronomers will try to understand through
reasoning and observe why the night lasts
so long in both of the Poles on Earth. Thanks
to the hard work of James, and inventiveness of Vladimir, their scientific adventure
will take them from the construction of an
observatory to that of a makeshift spacecraft. During a journey around the world,
before then heading to Mars and Saturn,
they will answer their questions and discover that planets have many similarities, as
well as differences! Spectacular 3D effects

THE AA PERFORMING ARTS GROUP

he Comédie de l’Aa was founded in 1998 and specialises mainly in
musical entertainment with a wide and varied repertoire and shows for
kids. All through the year, it has a full programme of entertainment which
combines music, drama, circus arts and dance.
It also offers educational activities for schools or amateur theatre groups,
exchanges with professional companies on specific themes, and is open
to all different types of artistic expression.
Mainly playing in the Salle Vauban, it has clocked up a total of 15,000
spectators and almost 300 season ticket holders and is now seeking to
develop the concept of cultural evenings offering the opportunity to
enjoy and discuss the evening’s programme in an informal atmosphere.

ounded in the 19th century, the municipal school of Fine Art has produced some artists of renown who left their mark on art history of the
19th and 20th centuries (Alphonse Deneuville, Léon Belly, Jules Joets).
Now redubbed the “Art School”, it offers courses in a wide range of techniques (including sculpture, painting, drawing, architecture, ceramics,
graphic design and contemporary art) to develop students’ creativity
and knowledge of art history and the current arts scene.
The school is attended by over three hundred students of all ages.
The teaching staff seek to offer students a demanding and high level

La Coupole, History Centre
Observe the history of World War II from the centre of this
underground city. Built in 1944 by the Nazis, La Coupole
was designed to conceal the preparatory work for Hitler’s
secret weapon: the V2 rocket or doodlebug which could
have destroyed England. It is now an amazing museum
where the historic and scientific implications of the
region’s darker past are explained, from the time of the
occupation to the hidden side of the space race.

Centre Historique Médiéval d’Azincourt
The mediaeval history centre of Azincourt (or Agincourt) presents the middle ages in an original, hands-on way. Video
technology is used to put you right in the middle of the battlefield, with test zones where you can feel the weight of the
armour. After your visit, you can visit the only battlefield of
the One Hundred Year War to be found in the Nord-Pas
de Calais!

Hôtel Sandelin Museum
As part of the 600th anniversary celebrations of the
Battle of Agincourt, the Hôtel Sandelin Museum is
putting on an exhibition in partnership with the Centre
Historique Médiéval d’Azincourt to show what life was
like in Saint-Omer at the time of the Hundred Year War.
Everyday objects will be displayed alongside some of
the masterpieces from the museum’s rich mediaeval
collection to illustrate how people lived in Saint-Omer
at the end of the Middle Ages.

THE SAINT-OMER JAZZ FESTIVAL
C
ome to Saint-Omer from the 15th to the 19th July to the
very first edition of its Jazz Festival!
More than 20 free concerts, training courses and masterclasses, meetings, visits and exhibitions will give rhythm to this
four-day-festival.
During the week end, the castle mount, the Coupole in
Helfaut, the town centre and all pubs in Saint Omer will swing
to the beat of Jazz!
The Land of Art and History organizes visits for those interested
in heritage too.
The greediest festival- goers will taste all specialties of shopkeepers and restaurants.
The powerful moments of the festival
On Saturday 18th July.
Work from 09.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and parade at 11.00 a.m.
The “New Orleans” workshop led by the musicians of the Gil
Evan Paris Workshop takes place in the Verlaine room, located in the General Leclercq Street (next to the public park).

From Friday 17th to Sunday 19th July, you will listen to the JFC
Big Band, the Gil Evans Paris Workshop, the Quintette Spirit,
Mr Fabrice Devienne and Mr David Linx and the Brussels Jazz
Orchestra, among others, performing on the small and the big
stage…
A very rich programme for all Jazz lovers!

PROCESSION ON THE WATER
T
he “nautical procession” organized by the team of
enthuiastic volunteers of the Groupement de Loisirs du
Haut-Pont, takes place on the last Sunday of July each
year, setting off from place de la Ghière.
This colourful event is well attended each summer by the
people of Saint-Omer who put all their creativity into decorating their “floats”, in this case, actual boats.
It is one of the last processions still alive in the Nord-Pas de
Calais region. A high point in the year’s events calendar and
a great excuse to have fun. Definitely not to be missed!
The day starts with a market selling regional produce.
The procession on the canal starts around 4pm
and an illuminated version is repeated around 10pm and
followed by a fireworks display. There are also many stands
selling food and drinks.
Save the date: 26 July, at the water’s edge!

BEER FESTIVAL
S
aint-Omer is having its second Beer Festival! On 12 and 13
September, the town will be decked out with everything
to do with beer and its brewing traditions. There is a varied programme of events for the weekend.
The streets of the town will come alive with brass band processions, traditional giants and concerts.
The Brasseries de Saint-Omer will be open to the public (by prior
booking) for guided tours of the brewery.

Guided tours around the sites of the town’s former breweries will
also be organized by the Pays d’Art et d’Histoire association.
Over these two days, you will be able to try a variety of craftbrewed beers, with local produce, and on the Sunday, a roast
pig in Pierre Bonhomme square.
There will also be an exhibition of vintage cars and other vehicles, workshops for kids, etc.

Come to Saint-Omer and discover the recently restored site of
the castle mount or the theatre of the city hall, which will soon
be renovated too! Archaeology lovers will meet in Therouanne
where children will take part to a workshop, changing them
into real archaeologists. Adults will discover the story of the
breweries in Ecques, before a beer-tasting session! All people
with delusions of grandeur will enjoy the bus travel that focuses
on the castles of our Land of Art and History.
The theme of this session 2015, named « the heritage of the
19th Century » will allow to enhance buildings as the Maison
du Marais (the Marsh House) in Saint-Martin-au-Laërt, and to
find out how we protect the ancient patrimony during the 21st
Century…
Whether you are a heritage lover or a curious person, meet the
Heritage of the Land of Art and History!
