series and then gave way to

With Foles in the fold (could
not resist) it appears that the
fight for the third string QB
will be between Bray, Murray
and Hogan, which leads to
the obvious questions – is
this the year that Bray plays,
or Murray buries the past or
what rhymes with Hogan?
I apologize but the truth is
that unless you are a super
geek fan or a coach of the
preseason
evaluation
of talent ritual, it is
hard to see what
significance
there is to that
first game. The
starters
barely
play,
the
second
stringers
hang on till
the third string comes in and
muddles to the end.
The
coaches simplify the plan to
look at what they have and
what they look for is often
not what most of us see even
when we run the DVR over
and over again.

Schwab. He lost his life while riding the Verruckt water slide at Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas
City, Kansas. His funeral services were held at the Life Mission Church in Olathe, Kansas.

t is not a story unique to
Kansas City. Across the
country, the history of
baseball is a lasting tribute to
the power of shared activities
helping to establish and grow
communities. In the immigrant
experience, the significance
of baseball and its importance
in that development is often
overlooked.
A
national
collecting
effort
by
the
Smithsonian is seeking to
remedy that.

“Esta
iniciativa

recolección
documentará historias
de
los
Estados
Unidos y Puerto Rico
e
identificará
los
artefactos que reflejen
la influencia social y
cultural del béisbol
en las comunidades
latinas. Los objetos
podrían incluir equipo

construcción
de
confianza
con

comunidad,
creando
una
comprensión
de por qué estamos
recolectando
-¿por
qué el Smithsonian
está
recolectando?.
¿Por qué es importante
contar con artículos y
materiales de archivo
para
contar
estas
historias en el futuro a
través de exhibiciones y
a través del programa?.
Mi esperanza es que
la gente va a empezar
a entender lo que

institución museo y
por qué es importante

Ella espera que a

in college and in other
sports. They were that
good of athletes.
For
Anna
Marie
Tutera,
executive
director of the Kansas
City Museum, that kind
of personal narrative
fuels the mission of the
museum.
“For me this initiative
and
the
launching
of these events over
the last two days is
really about building
awareness about the
collecting
initiative,
building trust with the
community,
creating
an understanding of
why we are collecting
– why the Smithsonian
is collecting. Why it
is important to have
articles and archival
materials to tell these
stories in the future
through exhibits and
through program. My
hope is that people
will start to understand
what we do as a
museum institution and
why it is important for
us to receive donated
materials to tell these
stories,”
explained
Tutera.
She hopes that as
people look through
their possessions, they
think twice about the
value of an item. While
it may seem innocuous
and worth of a trip to
the curb she hopes
they reach out to the
museum first.
“We would hope that
people would give us the
opportunity to make that
decision, and to be able
to work with them and
to be able to understand
the story that the object
has been telling. What
is the potential for the
stories it can tell for the
future? Because we may
see something in that
object that they don’t
see but we feel would
be important for the
collection and for future
exhibitions.”
She
was
thrilled
that so many people
attended the events.
“It reinforces for me
that we are on the
right track in the way
we engage community
and in the way we
develop our programs.
We are really taking a
participatory approach
to develop programs
and events.”
We are completely
available to talk to
people
about
our
process what it is like
to store materials how
they get stored why we
store them in the way
that we do and how
we get them ready and
processed for future
display.
Charlie Rivera played
for many years in the
leagues that filled the
summer months in the
Latino
communities
throughout the Midwest.
He played Saturday
morning with old friends.
“It brings back the
memories. You can’t
stay young forever.
It’s a game that when
we were playing it,
was a game everyone
looked forward to on
the weekends and the
weekdays
especially
the
leagues
and
the tournaments, he
reminisced.
“Those
were the days. I guess
I am just trying to relive
my youth. … It has been
years since I put on or
had a glove in my hand.
It felt good.”
Steve
Velazquez,
a former Kansas City
resident, is with the
National
Museum
of American History
at
the
Smithsonian
and recollections like
Rivera’s are at the
heart of the collecting
initiative.
“We are here as part
of a nationwide project
… partnering up with
lots of other institutions
and individuals around
the country to collect
stories of Latinos in the
community through the
lens of baseball.”
Velazquez
visited
Kansas City a year ago
and took a trip to the
museum where he met
curator Gene Chavez
who
was
working
on a local collecting
initiative.
“I
immediately
went to him and said,
‘We are starting this
project that is going
to be nationwide, let’s
partner up.’ Being a
hometown kid I thought
it was a great way to
get the important story
of Latinos in Kansas City
into a sort of national
dialogue. … Stories like
that are not represented
in the national dialogue.
… What we have found
is that people really
want their stories to be
told and once we do
it locally little by little
it becomes a great
national story.

DC added, “This is
the third series that
the Latinos in Baseball
project
that
goes
out
onto
different
communities throughout
the country examining
the role of baseball
… in shaping the
development of Latino
“This collecting initiative will document and identify artifacts that reflect the
social and cultural influence of baseball on Latino communities. Objects could
include baseball equipment, stadiums signs, game memorabilia, food vendor
signs, home movies, period photographs and more.

this case of baseball in
Kansas City. … People
don’t understand how
important it really is that
they keep this stuff. …. If
we are going to tell the
true complete history
of the role of baseball
in the United States
we have to tell Latinos
stories in the same way
we tell about the Negro
Leagues. … “
Ralph
Pacheco
played for many years
across the Midwest and
organized many teams.
He retired active play at
the age of 52.
“I have family like

to my cousin on the
Saucedo side. A friend

Art Ruiz attended the
festivities and talked
with Hispanic News
on Saturday just before
he stepped onto the
baseball field to take
part in the Old timers
game.
“Getting ready this
morning was kind of
like the old days – you
get a little jittery coming
into the ballpark. There
is a little anticipation
to make sure you can
… finally get out there
and try and do it. It has
been a fun morning,”
said Ruiz. “Your mind
tells you one thing and
your body tells you
something else. … I am
looking forward to try
and throw the ball over
the plate.”
Ruiz
played
for
some legendary teams
like the Kansas City
Angels and helped
formed the Amigos.
He pitched for the
Eagles, Ramirez Truck
Sales and other teams.
“I
just
kind
of
bounced
around.
I
played one year up
in St Joe. I have very
fond memories meeting
people from all over the
country. A lot of neat
guys over the years,”
he recalled. “We were
very competitive. What
I was amazed by were
the athletes that you
met. I don’t think they
realized the potential
they had. … They were

the Chiefs

There is no doubt
that fans can take
advantage of some
pretty
inexpensive
tickets and for many
it will be the only time
in the season they will
be able to afford to
enter Arrowhead. An
announced crowd of
over 69,000 tells you
people are hungry for
the season to start.
Maybe it’s the Royals’
woes, though they seem
to be making a ruckus
in the division but still
sit below 500. Maybe
it’s just that
we
sense a winner out
there. I certainly have
high
expectations
going into this season.
I told a friend that I feel
confident the Chiefs
will play in the AFC
championship
game
this season. I always
believe that at the start
of every season even
when Paul Wiggins was
the coach, but I have
not vocalized it before.
What gives me that
confidence? It wasn’t
Saturday’s game. It is
more the idea that the
organization is in good
hands while at the
same time ignoring the
fiasco with Houston’s
injury and the
unpleasantness
of the Berry
hold out or the
aging of Hali.
Coach
Andy
Reed
has
proven
that
he is a winner and he
will get his team to the
league championship
game. I believe he will
do that this year and
not because Peyton
Manning has retired or
the Chargers are in the
dumps and in spite of
the sense that Oakland
looks different this year.
It is blind faith that
the Chiefs’ roster is
strong on offense and
more than adequate
on defense. I have no
idea what the final
roster will look like
or who has the inside
track over another, but
I believe the Chiefs
have a great coaching
staff, and aside from
hiccups here and there
and hopefully not many
at the end of the game,
the Chiefs will represent

packed church, visitors
were
greeted
with
pictures of Caleb smiling
at them and a video
played of Caleb playing
sports or spending time
with his three brothers.
During the service,
Kansas Representative
Scott Schwab, spoke out
and told those gathered
in remembrance of his
son, that his goal is
to get to an emotional
place where he thinks of
his son with joy instead
of the sorrow for what
he lost.
“We’re committed to
getting there together,”
he said.
He told the audience
that when his kids were
born, “Nathan was my
pleasure, Caleb was
my joy, Alex was my
delight and Issac is my
treasure.”
He gave a glimpse
into the type of person
his son Caleb was in his
short time on earth.
“When I was laid off
from a job some years
back,
Caleb,
who
was just five years old
came to me and said,
Dad, I’m so sorry that
happened to you. It
was like I was the kid
who’d scraped my knee
at that moment, and
he held me. That was
Caleb,” said Schwab.
Before walking off the
stage, he stopped and
placed a kiss on his
son’s portrait.
“We’ve lost some
joy. We’ve lost Caleb,
my joy. But we’ll get it
back,” he said.
Over a week ago,
the
Schwab
family
had gathered on a
Sunday afternoon at
the Schlitterbahn water
park for a family outing.
Schwab was excited
to ride Verruckt, the
world’s tallest water
slide with his older
brother, but their weight
did not allow them to
ride together. Instead,
he rode in the next raft
with two women that
were not related to
him. After the initial
drop from the top, just
as the raft started to rise
above the 50-foot hump
on the ride, it is alleged
that something went
wrong. He was killed
and the two women in
the raft received facial
injuries.
Officials
are
still
investigating
the
accident at this time.
Kansas
Senator
David
Haley
told
Hispanic News “It has
been a tragic education
for Kansas and for the
country.”
Senator Haley said
that
the
legislature
along with community
members
assumed
erroneously that the
ride was inspected for
mechanical and safety.
“I think all of us were
surprised at the lack
of state oversight. It
is interesting that this
didn’t come up before.
The Kansas legislature
this year checked into
carnival
amusement
attractions that move
around that may hold
danger to the public,
exotic animal petting
zoos, where children
can be exposed to
dangerous animals—
that was the topic of
2016. The discussions
were how could they
be
regulated
and
maintained.
The
specific topic of a large
stationary amusement
park like Schlitterbahn
and their rides were
not a topic.
Many
of us assumed that
regulation was in place
for the larger stationary
amusement rides,” he
said.
It wasn’t until a life
was lost that it was
discovered that the
Verruckt water slide
had been operating
for two years with no
regulations in place
by the state.
The
Kansas
Department
of Labor,(KDOL) the
agency that oversees
amusement park rides,
according
to
state
records
inspected
Schlitterbahn back in
2012, two years before
the slide was built.
According to Senator
Haley, federal officials
don’t regulate water
slides; instead that
duty falls to local state
officials.
Now the
Kansas
Department
of Labor, who is the
entity that oversees
the parks, is reviewing
inspection
records
done by Schlitterbahn
staff and Chet Smith,
American
Safety
Management with the
National
Association
of Amusement Ride
Safety Officials, who
conducted an inspection
for insurance broker
Haas & Wilkerson Risk
Management.
Smith conducted his
inspection on June, 7,
2016. He was sent
by Haas & Wilkerson
Risk
Management
(insurance broker for
Schlitterbahn) as a loss
control representative
for the insurance broker.
Smith inspection report
included pictures of
all the rides including
Verruckt,
the
food
vendors and signage
around the park.
Smith wrote, “All
rides and attractions
listed were inspected
at
Schlitterbahn
Water Park. The rides
were found to meet
underwriting guidelines
for insurability with no
disqualifying conditions
noted.

their water rides since
2012,
now
finds
itself scrambling to
request
inspection
records done by the
staff at the park and
wait for investigators
to
determine
what
happened on Verruckt
on that fateful Sunday
afternoon.
The Guinness Book of
World Records certified
the slide standing at
168 feet tall when it
was built in May 2014
as the world’s tallest
water slide. The slide
opened to the public in
July 2014 after several
weeks
of
delays.
Technical
glitches
forced the original May
23, 2014 opening date
to be pushed back three
times.
Questions raised on
social media are asking
was it an engineering
design flaw that may
have
caused
the
accidental death or
did the Velcro seat
beat fail to hold the
ten year old in place.
After the young boy’s
death, people have
come forward to media
sources and online,
stating they told workers
that the seat belt had
failed and come off
while they were on the
ride.
As of press time,
Hispanic News requests
for a statement from the
Schlitterbahn
Media
department regarding
the reports of the Velcro
seat belts coming off
has not been received.
Senator
Haley
questions the factors
that
may
have
played a role in the
accidental death. He
joins the community
in wondering if it was
mechanical, a design
flaw in the slide with
the steep drop, the
water and the speed
of the raft or did the
body weight in the raft
play into the accident.
He is waiting along
with the community
for the investigators
conclusions.
“Here we are in
Kansas with a horrific
death, any time anyone
dies, it is terrible, but
this is especially so. I
cringe like the rest of
the country and world
when you think about it.
You are going out with
your family, to have an
enjoyable day and it is
almost inconceivable
to think about,” said
Haley.
When Kansas City,
Kansas Mayor Mark
Holland learned of the
tragic death, he said,
“I am keeping the
Schwab family close
in my thoughts. My
prayers are with them.”
He
also
added,
“We
all,
including
Schlitterbahn, want to
learn more about what
caused this accident
and I trust that the
investigation
under
way will give us those
answers.”
The water park was
shut down after the
tragedy.
When the
park reopened three
days later, Verruckt
remained closed and
will be closed for
the remainder of the
season. Hundreds of
people did return, some
with mixed feelings but
felt that the park was
being maintained and
their children would be
safe.
A fence has been
erected around Verruckt
while the investigation
is ongoing and no
cameras are being
allowed in the park at
this time. Security has
been posted to keep
the public away from
the ride.
Although
some
people that Hispanic
News
spoke
with
didn’t want to give
their names, they said,
“they were hesitant
about coming out after
the tragedy. It made
them stop and think
about if the other rides
were safe for them or
their children.”
One young man,
Mark, told Hispanic
News, that he had
rode Verruckt and
felt it was safe at the
time. “Now I am not
so sure. I don’t think
I would ride it if they
reopen it.”
At this time, the rides
close to Verruckt have
been closed as the
investigation continues
at the park.

last month in San Jose
California. One month
later he brought his show
to Kansas City’s Sprint
Center
last
Saturday
night. Thousands of fans
came out. Álvarez is
well known in the music
industry,
because
of
his live concerts. Also
performing with him as
special guest was Pancho
Barraza.
Born in 1983 to a
humble family of farmers
in Chiapas State, Julión
Álvarez
moved
to
Sinaloa at the age of
18. He began making
headway in norteño
music, performing in
bars, and got his big
break in 2002 when he
joined Banda Sinaloense
MS de Sergio Lizárraga.
After several years,
Álvarez left the group
and formed his own,
Julión Álvarez y Su
Norteño Banda. They
debuted with the album
Corazón Mágico, led
by a hit single of the
same name. After that,
he released a string of
successful albums at a
torrid rate of 11 between
2007 and 2014 ­
– that
led him to become one
of the leading figures of
the genre. He has been
nominated for several
Latin Grammys, and also
served as a judge for
the talent show La Voz
México.
Álvarez earned his
third No. 1 on Billboard’s
Top Latin Albums chart
last month with the
album Mis Ídolos, Hoy
Mis Amigos. He won
3 Billboard Latin Music
Awards previously and
in 2016 he received
the Latin Billboard in
the category Regional
Mexican
Albums,
Artists of the Year, Duo
or
Group.
Alvarez
has released 6album
that went Gold, 2 that
went Platinum and one
Double-Platinum album.
Jose Muniz Arevalo
was
among
the
thousands who attended
the show. He sat about
seven rows back from the
front stage.
“Alvarez’s
show
has been one of the
greatest
performances
that he has done in his
career and providing
a running show time of
two hours and forty five
minutes. My favorite
songs of Alvarez were
Hay Amores, Corazon
Magico, Y Asi Fue,
Terrenal, Ni lo Intentes,
Olvidame, Tu no tienes

According to Arevalo,
his wife Elizabeth has
been a fan of for the last
seven years.
“For my wife he is

Fernandez, and Juan
Gabriel. We hope to
see him reach the same
level as Fernandez and
Gabriel.
Brenda
Salcedo
attended the show and
shared her thoughts with
Hispanic News.
“I loved the show. I’m
a big fan and have been
looking forward to this
show for a long time.
What impressed me the
most was the concept
of this tour called ‘Mis
Idolos. Mis Amigos.’
He invites two artists to
sing with him, that were
famous and inspired him
when he was starting
his music career. He
used to see them as his
idols but now they are
his friends. To show his
appreciation to them
for their inspiration, he
invites them to be part of
his tour, now that he is
more famous than them.
That says a lot about him
as an artist, friend and
person. ... He is grateful
and humble.”
