Dear CHS famil ies,
Thank you for an am azing year ! Congr ats to the fantastic class of
2016!!!
Thank you to the fam ilies and com m unity for your suppor t over
the last thr ee year s! It has been an incr edible jour ney. I leave
CHS a better leader.
We had a tr em endous year , w ith accom plishm ents w e can all be
pr oud of as a com m unity. Athletics, fine and per for m ing ar ts,
academ ic clubs -- you nam e it, and CHS w as on top! I look
for w ar d to hear ing of the gr eat tr aditions that continue to shape
our young people into thr iving and successful citizens.
As w e tr ansition to our new pr incipal, Dr. Er i c I r i zar r y, I know you w ill w elcom e him
w ith the sam e gr ace and suppor t you affor ded m e. He w ill br ing to the table a w ealth of
ener gy and ideas that w ill only keep CHS m oving for w ar d tow ar ds continued

star ted in Septem ber by 10th-gr ader
Lu cas Hi ggi n s. Other team m em ber s
ar e Car oline Clar k, Thom as Inigo,
M aggie Randle, and W illiam Wer ner.
The gr oup has r aised $17,000 to
establish a student-r un endow m ent
to suppor t local anti-hunger
initiatives.
"I'm technically the sponsor of the
club," says Chinese teacher Dan i el
St ol k ow sk i . "But I have to say, it's
com pletely student r un. I'm so
im pr essed w ith the initiative and
excellence that these students
dem onstr ated."
Team s w er e tasked w ith developing
an investm ent str ategy and m aking
"tr ades" using W har ton-developed
softw ar e w ith $100,000 of faux seed
m oney.

FOR RECENT GRADUATES: If you ar e attending PVCC next year ,
you need to r egister for a SOAR (Student Or ientation, Advising
and Registr ation) session.
At this special event for all r ecent 2016 high school gr aduates,
new students w ill m eet w ith an advisor to discuss their pr ogr am
of study and r egister for the Fall 2016 sem ester.

HELP TRANSI TI ONI NG TO COLLEGE: Piedm ont Vir ginia
Com m unity College (PVCC) is a tw o-year college that helps
students gain full-tim e em ploym ent or tr ansfer to a four -year
college or univer sity. PVCC students enjoy a w elcom ing
com m unity and engaging classr oom instr uction.
Still, tr ansitioning fr om high school to college can be a little
intim idating for m any students. W ith the Pi edm on t Advan t age
pr ogr am , par ticipants w ill com plete a five-w eek pr ogr am this
sum m er on the college's m ain cam pus in Char lottesville.

GENERAL GIFTS: We welcome t ax-deduct ibl e
donations to support the good work of our
teachers and students. To make a donation,
simply write a check to "CHS" and mail or deliver
to our office at 1400 Melbourne Road, 22901. If
you would like to support a particular program,
write a brief description on the memo line.
GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS: The PTO administers
teacher grant s, schol arships for graduating
students, and t eacher appreciat ion events. In the
2014-2015 school year we awarded almost
$6000 in teacher grants and three $1000
scholarships to graduating seniors.Please help
to us to support our teachers and students by
participating in the grocery card program or
through our direct appeals. The CHS PTO is a 501
(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
Tentative Schedule: Par ticipants w ill m eet M onday, Wednesday,
and Thur sday fr om 11 a.m . to 3:15 p.m . (lunch pr ovided),
beginning June 27th and ending August 3r d.

United Nations club travels to two conf erences
every year, and we've been honored to invite al l
int erest ed st udent s, including
those in financial need -thanks to donations from our
communit y.

the National Honor Society com pleted
1422 h ou r s of ser v i ce for CHS and
the w ider Char lottesville-Albem ar le
com m unity.
Additionally, the NHS donated $319
fr om its annual Ser enades
fundr aising to SARA, the Sex u al
Assau l t Resou r ce Agen cy, as this
year 's NHS local nonpr ofit of choice.
Wor l d Hist or y II st udent s
t our Rucker sv il l e museum,
int er v iew l ocal v et er ans
volunteer tour guides, all of whom fought in the Vietnam
War, showed off aircraft and tanks used in the war. They also
shared stories of basic training, medic experiences,
helicopter parachuting, and adjusting to life after returning
to the U.S.
Who knew that a Vietnam War time machine existed next to
an alpaca farm in Ruckersville, Virginia? On May 23rd,
students in Matt Deegan?s World History II classes boarded
it.
After the museum tour, students organized into small groups
and conducted formal interviews with a local veteran from
the American Legion Post 74, based in Keswick. Then, back
in class, these student groups wrote a news article -- or
created a podcast or video -- based on their interviews.
These students climbed into helicopters and a hippie van,
clutched 1960s weaponry, and tried on military packs at the
Vietnam War Foundation Museum in Ruckersville. Their
