To ensure ready flow during the clients' frequent dinner
San Diego takes advantage of the home's existing
parties, the kitchen was designed to be open to dining and
architecture, playing with volumes and height. Base cabinetry in
entertaining spaces, as well as support the grill area outdoors

With a full remodel completed fall 2009 by architect Bill Bocken, this
1970s Mission Hills “tree house” is perched canyon-side with views
of Mission Valley. Built out of recycled telephone poles, the home
initially boasted enviable natural light and treetop views, but was
hampered by outdated finishes and less than ideal space planning.
The heart of the remodel is its modern, ecological kitchen — sleek,
inviting, and designed by Lisa Wilson-Wirth, CKD of Arclinea San
Diego, with support from Jeremy Gleiberman, to meet the needs of
homeowners Bryan Leigh and Tom Hutching, who love to entertain.
Volumes, heights, and materials are carefully balanced to ensure an
open plan that is highly functional and aesthetically elegant. Colors
and finishes are urbane and masculine, timeless and inviting. Work
counters are uniform height, encouraging engagement between

kitchen and living spaces. At the center of the design, mid-height
cabinets in stainless steel provide light reflection at a lowered height
that allows conversation and visibility from all angles. LED lighting
under the island bar top offers additional visual interest.
A high-tech induction cooktop (which boils pasta water in
60 seconds or less), convection steam oven, and other luxurious
amenities simplify everyday needs. Strategically placed and sleekly
integrated solutions include the small appliances garage for
countertop gadgets, and pop-up totems that contain electrical
outlets. At the main sink, an extra deep wash basin with a stainless
KWC faucet is flanked by dedicated cabinetry for dish and glass
storage. The end result: A modern kitchen uniquely designed to
make cooking and eating at home an everyday pleasure.
