Pastor’s Letter March 22/23 What is Faith Like? Dear Parish Family, Beginning today and for the next two weeks, we are reading a set of Gospels from St. John that speaks to us about what faith is like. These are not intellectual arguments about belief, but rather stories that speak to the heart and describe what faith is like from the inside of a believer. They are presented in Lent because Lent is a time of retreat for those who will be baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil Mass. These Gospels help to explain to new believers what it means to have faith. For many people today, faith is a way of thinking. It is not surprising that in our scientific and technological world, there are many who want to know what proofs we have for our believing. They want to know if we have any evidence for our claims about God’s existence and what our God is doing in the world. Understanding and questioning are important parts of faith but they are hardly the whole story. Approaching faith in this way is a little bit like an academic treatise on love. Could you imagine telling someone that you love them only to be met by a series of questions about evidence and proof? Something is lost. So the next three Gospels will present a much more heartfelt approach to faith. They each tell us what faith is like from the experience of a person who encountered Christ: This week: The Woman at the Well — Faith is like meeting someone who knows you even better than you know yourself. It is meeting someone who touches your soul. Next week: The Man Born Blind — Faith is like seeing. Faith can mean that you were unable or unwilling to see and suddenly something happens that opens your eyes. Third week: The Raising of Lazarus — Faith is like being raised from the dead. It is feeling dead and lifeless and having someone give you back your vitality. Lent is a good time to think about yourself as a believer. You are invited to think not about your argument for faith but rather about the experiences and encounters that have led you to faith. St. Paul tells us that Christians should always be ready to give reasons for their faith. These Gospels encourage us to have reasons for what we believe and hope for and also to tell the story behind our believing. So listen as the woman at the well, the man born blind, and Lazarus tell their stories of encountering Christ. Then think about and tell your own. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Mike Vetrano, Pastor Our Parish Mission 2014 Evenings of Prayer, Music, and Reflection with Dan Schutte This year we welcome Dan Schutte, a well known Catholic musician and composer. Dan is the author of many songs we sing at mass each week including Here I am Lord and Table of Plenty. On these evenings Dan will weave together his music and the spiritual reflections behind them. Lent is the time of the Church’s annual retreat - a time to examine our life of faith, a time to focus on our relationship with God and steps to nourish it. The parish mission is an opportunity to give God some time. Monday, March 24, at 7:30 PM A Deep Down Hunger God created us with a profound hunger deep in our souls, an emptiness that is forever looking to be filled. While we surely have moments of profound happiness, it’s never enough. We’re never Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 PM completely satisfied with this life because God in Whom We Trust we were made for something more. God never forces himself on us but is there when we open the door and invite him into our hearts. Opening the door takes trust and sometimes we’re just too Wednesday, March 26, at 7:30 PM God’s Invitation We are not left to make our journey alone. We make it with other men and women of faith. And we make it with God at our side encouraging us, giving us strength and hope. Where is God inviting me? Am I ready to follow? afraid. Who is the God that waits for us? Who is his name? How do we come to know him? A Note from Religious Education Director Jennifer Ferrantino Sacred Heart Youth Ministry BINGO NIGHT! For more information email: [email protected] Religious Education Lent is a great opportunity to make our Faith real for children young and old. Pray, fasting and almsgiving are the ways in which we can help ourselves and children become aware of the mysteries of our faith. Last Sunday we had a guest speaker share with our older students about her personal struggle with an incurable disease. Johanna and her mother, Eileen shared how they literally rely on their faith in God every day. Even in the darkness of illness there is hope. They ended their presentation with singing a song called “Blessings” by Laura Story, the lyrics remind us how the hard times in life are very often the moments we learn so much and were you find true faith. Also this past weekend the First Holy Communion students participated in a special Mass for preparation for receiving the sacrament, we learned about the different parts of the Mass and the significance of our movements and gestures during Mass. Thanks Fr. Mike for doing a great job explaining to our young students! The Parish Mission is this week I am really looking forward to it! All Confirmation Candidates and families are to join us for an evening Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday at 7:30 in the church. Confirmation candidates will be at the parish for a retreat day Saturday, April 5. All Confirmation parents should plan on joining us for 5 PM Mass that day. Please contact me with any questions 283-0508 or email me [email protected] Stations of the Cross We remember the road to Jesus’ death and link his journey to our own as our parish deacons lead us through this beautiful devotion. Come and pray with us… Each Friday during Lent— at 7 PM Living Stations of the Cross Good Friday, April 18, at 7:30 PM in the Church This is a wonderful opportunity for your Lenten and Holy Week journey! Our parish community comes together-led by our young people, our Music Ministries and members of our parish community-who share their own personal experiences on this most holy and solemn night. The celebration includes the Veneration of the Cross. Fasting and Abstinence in Lent Lent Lenten Fast and Abstinence •All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive, are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday–to limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals (which do not together equal a full meal) on each of those days. Water may be taken at any time. Penance •The obligation to do penance and to observe the penitential seasons is a serious one. Those whose health or work would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence, and individuals’ consciences should guide them in this matter. However, no one should hold himself lightly excused, and another penitential practice should be substituted by those who cannot fast or abstain. A more serious reason is considered necessary to opt out of the observances on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday than for the other Fridays of Lent. Easter Duty •All of the faithful who have received First Holy Communion are obliged to receive the Eucharist at least once a year, normally during the Easter Season–a period which in the United States extends from the first Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday. Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi March 23, 2014 Water is a gift of life—both physical and spiritual. That comes through very well in this Sunday’s readings from Exodus and John. Water quenches our thirst. It is a cleansing agent for just about everything we use. Water also ritually washes away our sins. Why then do we treat it with such disregard? We waste it. We pollute it. We use it as a commodity to sell and as a weapon to withhold from our enemies. Many experts warn us of “water wars” where there are shortages and of shortages where there are wars. Jesus tells us He is living water. We need to show far greater respect for this sacred gift in all its forms and all its uses. Let’s begin today. ~Pax Christi Metro New York Adult Faith Formation Group is holding their 10th Annual “Angel Tea” Sunday, March 23rd at 2:30 PM Guest Speaker:: Sister Pat Duffy More News Around SHJM Parish Hall Auditorium RSVP by March 18th:: Nancy Calvert 283-8173 If anyone is interested in baking desserts or making sandwiches, please call: Sandwiches: Patricia Sheerin—287-7864 Desserts: Ginny Bauer—283-5044 Catholic Ministries Appeal An Evening with Catholic Charities Director Laura Cassell Catholic Charities is one of the most important ministries supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal.
