The pope made the announcement Sept. 30, 2013 at the end of an "ordinary public consistory," a gathering of cardinals. Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes, read the biographies and highlighted the "service to peace" and the impact both popes had "inside and outside the Christian community" at times of great cultural, political and religious transformation. Blessed John XXIII, known particularly for convoking the Second Vatican Council, was pope from 1958 to 1963; Blessed John Paul beatified him in 2000. Pope Francis said Blessed John was "a bit of the 'country priest,' a priest who loves each of the faithful and knows how to care for them; he did this as a bishop and as a nuncio." He was holy, patient, had a good sense of humor and, especially by calling the Second Vatican Council, was a man of courage, Pope Francis said. "He was a man who let himself be guided by the Lord." Most of us remember Blessed John Paul II. He was known as a globetrotter who made 104 trips outside Italy, served as pope from 1978 to 2005 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011. About Blessed John Paul, Pope Francis said, "I think of him as 'the great missionary of the church," because he was "a man who proclaimed the Gospel everywhere." The choice of April 27, which will be Divine Mercy Sunday in 2014, was not a complete surprise. Pope Francis said he had been considering Dec. 8, but the possibility of icy roads could make it difficult for Polish pilgrims who would travel by bus to Rome for the ceremony. The other option, he said, was Divine Mercy Sunday, a celebration instituted worldwide by Pope John Paul. Since the beginning of his pontificate in March, Pope Francis has emphasized God's mercy and readiness to forgive those who recognize their need for pardon; a new "age of mercy" was needed in the church and the world. Pope Francis signed a decree recognizing the miracle needed for Blessed John Paul's canonization July 5; the same day, the Vatican announced that the pope had agreed with members of the Congregation for Saints' Causes that the canonization of Blessed John should go forward even without a second miracle attributed to his intercession. ST. FELICITAS SCHOOL During Lent our students are expected to continue to grow in their faith through self reflection, prayer, and penance. A tool we use is a form of the Ignatian Examen. We do this together as a school everyday. Here is what we pray: Lord we ask you to bring your light into our memory as we remember our actions and decisions throughout the day… I remember the things throughout the day that I am thankful for… I reflect on any positive interactions that I had with my peers… I remember how good it feels when I act as a loved Child of God… I remember what I did to create the happiness in that situation… Lord help me to continue your good work. I reflect on any negative interactions that I had with my peers. I remember how bad it feels deep down to be a part of an unkind situation. I recognize the part that I played in the situation and how it is leading me away from you, my God. Lord, grant me your forgiveness and give me the strength to learn from my mistakes. Help me to work harder to be your loved child and make your name known to others. Lord God I am thankful for the gift of the new day tomorrow and I will continue to work to be the best person that I can be. We ask this through Christ our Lord… Amen Events of the Week Mar.17 6:00 pm 6:30 pm 7:00 pm St. Patrick’s Day Catholic Daughters Youth Event Planning CCD Jr. High Hall SMC Church 3:30 pm 3:45 pm 7:00 pm 7:00 pm 7:00 pm CCD Parent Faith Share Faith Formation Classes RCIA - Penance ... Fasting and almsgiving go together. When we give up something during Lent, or eat simpler and less food, we can put aside money that is saved and give it to the poor. Please join our parish community on Thursday evenings during Lent and share in this traditional Lenten practice. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving and making sacrifices of little things will help us to strengthen our relationship with God. This is also a wonderful way to meet with other young families within our parish. STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross are one of the oldest devotions in the Church. Jerusalem has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Christians. Pilgrims go to trace the via dolorosa (the way of sorrows). This is the route Jesus followed from Pilate’s house to Golgatha— the hill on which he was crucified—and finally to his tomb. It was said that after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension, Our Lady walked the via dolorosa often. Those of us who cannot go to Jerusalem have the opportunity to make this pilgrimage journey in our own church. This is in the popular Lenten devotion. At each station, we pause to remember the event that took place there. Join together with the parish community to participate in this devotion on the Thursdays in Lent. Happy St. Patrick’s Day GIFTS ARE NEEDED FOR “THE YOUNG AT HEART’ LUNCHEON For APRIL STATIONS OF THE CROSS (CONT.) These are the stations Jesus is condemned to death Jesus carries his cross Jesus falls the first time Jesus meets his mother Simon and Cyrene helps Jesus carry his cross Veronica wipes the face of Jesus Jesus falls the second time Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem Jesus falls the third time Jesus is stripped of his garments Jesus is nailed to the cross Jesus dies on the cross Jesus is taken down from the cross Jesus is place in the tomb Family Activity Periodically during Lent, take your child to the church and pray the stations. You could have your child draw a picture of each station (or choose one each week) or have them create one from modeling clay. If you would like a copy of the stations with reflections please stop by the Religious Education office and we will provide you with one.
